Alzalee T. Billie
Alzalee Taylor Billie, 52, wife of Jasper V. Billie, died Sunday, March 23, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born June 17, 1950, in Richmond, Va., she was the daughter of James Taylor and Julia Mae Holmes Taylor. She was a graduate of Manning Training High School in Manning and worked as a cook for many years in New York City.

Survivors besides her husband and parents of Alcolu include two sons, Anthony Billie of Richmond and Kenneth (Patty) Billie of Sumter; two daughters, Valerie Taylor and Joyce Billie of Richmond; seven brothers, John (Joyce) Taylor of New Zion, Esau (Deloris) Taylor of Gable, Willie (Lou Ann) Taylor of Sumter, Francis (Barbara) Taylor of Alcolu, Jerry Taylor and Alphonza (Sheila) Taylor of Gainesville, Fla. and Johnny (Cindy) Taylor of Manning; three sisters, Annette (Roy) Stocks of Baltimore, Vertelle (Oluseun) Cole of Hyattsville, Md., and Rachel Lewis of Alcolu; and 11 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Essie M. Taylor.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Maranatha Seventh Day Adventist Church, Huggins Street, Manning, with Pastor Eugene Mason officiating.

Burial followed in Francis Cemetery.

Shirley R. Nelson
LONG BEACH, N.Y. — Shirley “Ellen” Ragin Nelson, 55, died Sunday, March 31, 2002, at Long Beach Medical Center.

Born Sept. 19, 1946, in Summerton, she was the daughter of Mamie King Ragin and the late Thomas Ragin. She was a 1964 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. She continued her education at Royal Business College in New York, where she received her degree in business administration. In her youth, she was a member of Taw Caw Baptist Church and in later years she reinstated her membership. She was employed as a legal secretary.

Survivors besides her mother include a son, Eric Nelson of Central Islip, N.Y.; a daughter, Constance Nelson of Jamaica, N.Y.; a brother, Luke Ragin of New Rochelle, N.Y.; four sisters, Clara W. Lawson of Miami, Thomasene Ragin-Ali, Arlene R. Washington and Mamie R. Wright of Summerton; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Ragin.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson officiated.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Members of Scott’s Branch High School Class of 1964 served as pallbearers and flower bearers. Trustees of the church also served as pallbearers.

Clarence McIntosh
Clarence “Mac” McIntosh, 78, husband of Evelyn B. McIntosh, died Saturday, April 6, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center after a long illness.

Born April 24, 1923, in Lee County, he was the son of the late Thomas W. McIntosh and Aline B. McIntosh. He was a self-employed welder and mechanic.

Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Michael McIntosh, Billy McIntosh and Jackie McIntosh of Sumter; two daughters, Linda M. McElveen of Sumter and Brenda M. Morris of Alcolu; two brothers, Robert McIntosh of Sumter and Earl McIntosh of Florida; two sisters, Linnie M. Waldon of Virginia and Bertha M. Bartlette of Sumter; a grandson, Seth McIntosh of the home; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Annie M. Bochette; and two brothers, Allen McIntosh and Harold McIntosh.

Graveside services were 3 p.m. Tuesday in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Buddy Griffin officiated.

Pallbearers were Alan McIntosh, Haston Terry, W.J. Brown, Dean Brown, Buster Kind and Max Terry.

Honorary pallbearers were Roland McElveen and Rudy Morris.

Leland B. Whetsell
Leland Benjamin Whetsell, 73, husband of Margaret Spigner Whetsell, died Monday, March 25, 2002 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 7, 1929, in Orangeburg County, he was the son of the late Oswell Benjamin Whetsell and Lizzie Kathleen Shieder Whetsell. He was a retired farmer, a WWII Army veteran and a member of Summerton United Methodist Church.

Survivors besides his wife of Summerton include four daughters, Sally Ardis, Patsy Bradham and husband David, Elaine Masincupp and husband Chip and Kitty Whetsell of Summerton; two sisters, Elizabeth Wild of Virginia and Maxine Riser of Bowman; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Nell Medlin and Frances Cohen, and a brother, Stacy Whetsell.

Services were 11 a.m. Wednesday in Summerton United Methodist Church. The Revs. Carolyn Malphrus and Ken Phelps officiated.

Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Caring House of Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital, 2800 Colonial Dr., Columbia, S.C. 29203 or Clarendon Hall, P.O. Box 609, Summerton, S.C. 29148.

Ruth B. Yates
Ruth B. Yates, 75, wife of Sam Edward Yates Jr., died Monday, February 10, 2003, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Aug. 11, 1927, in Alcolu, she was the daughter of the late Earl L. and Mary Coker Bochette. She was a retired clothing manufacturing inspector, and was a member of Turbeville Southern Methodist Church.

Survivors besides her husband of Turbeville include a daughter, Claudette Dixon and husband, Charles, of Sumter; a son, Harry E. Yates of Turbeville; a sister, Doris Kaminer of Irmo; a brother, Howard L. Bochette of Nashville, Tenn.; four grandsons; two great-grandsons; and a special daughter, Barbara Ann Geddings of Turbeville.

She was preceded in death by a son, Russell Yates.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stpehens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Larry Crowe officiating.

Burial followed in Turbeville Southern Methodist Church Cemetery in Turbeville.

Pallbearers included Craig Dixon, Rusty Dixon, Chad Yates, Brooks Yates, Wayne Kelly and Cliff Matthews.

Memorials may be made to Turbeville Freewill Baptist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Willie L. White
Augusta, Ga. - Willie Lewis White, 72, husband of Lula Mae “Money” Williams White, died February 3, 2003, at Joseph M. Still Burn Center, Augusta, Ga.

Born June 8, 1928, in Sumter, he was the son of the late James White and LaLa Leonard White.

He received his formal education in the public schools of Sumter County. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors besides his wife of Alcolu include five sons, Willie (Eunice) White, Tommy (Clarissa) White and Bill (Hazel) White of Manning, Albert King White of Durham, N.C., and Lewis (Edith) White of Loris; five daughters, Ida Mae (Ernest) Ragin, Annie L. White, Linda (Jerome) Billups, Annette (Roney) Cousar and Dorothy White (companion, Amos Simmons) of Manning; a sister, Marie Epps of Kingstree; 30 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Hubert White and Leon Leonard; and a sister-in-law, Bessie White.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Friday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning with Bishop Raymond Holliday officiating, assisted by the Rev. George P. Windley and Elder Willie White.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Lincoln Seals
Lincoln Seals, 84, widower of Alice Richburg Seals, died Tuesday, February 4, 2003, at Tuomey Healthcare System, Sumter.

Born July 3, 1918, in Davis Station, he was the son of the late Elijah Seals and Florence Richburg Seals. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He joined Elizabeth Baptist Church at an early age. Upon moving to Brooklyn, N.Y., he joined Cornerstone Baptist Church. He reunited with Elizabeth Baptist Church after returning to South Carolina and attended Taw Caw Baptist Church. He served in World War II.

Survivors include a son, Leroy (Judy) Seals of Accord, N.Y.; a daughter, Velma (Ben) Rogers of Yardley, Pa.,; a brother, Deacon Willie James Seals of Manning; two sisters, Josephine White of Westbury, N.Y., and O’Neal Mariner of Oceanside, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Alver, Leroy and Lee Ernest.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Elizabeth Baptist Church, Alex Harvin Hwy., U.S. 301, with the Rev. Dr. Ashley B. Vaughn, pastor, and the Rev. Willie J. Seals Jr. officiating.

Burial followed in Elizabeth Baptist Church cemetery.

Pallbearers included grandsons and nephews.

Floral bearers included granddaughters and nieces.

Leslie M. Rhodus III
Hilton Head - Leslie Martin “Chip” Rhodus III, 36, died Monday, February 3, 2003, at Hilton Head.

Born Nov. 4, 1966, in Sumter, he was the son of the late Leslie Martin Rhodus Jr. and the late Willene Harrington Musselwhite. He was a restaurant manager and was of the Presbyterian faith.

Survivors include three sisters, Angela “Angie” White and her husband, Donald, of Sumter, Melanie Brown and her husband, Bruce, of Florence, and Carla Hyatt of Florence; three stepsisters, Elaine McDowell, Cindy Espinosa and Linda Duke of Texas; a stepbrother, Bill Dodd of Texas; stepfather, Charles Musselwhite of Kingstree and stepmother, Alma Rhodus of Houston, Texas; paternal grandmother, Cornie Ard of Manning; three aunts; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Eddie Harrington officiating.

Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Marty Jones, Thomas Harrington, Tim McKenzie, Robert James, D.J. White, and “Mushie” Hendrix.

Louvenia C. Polk
Sumter - Louvenia Canty Polk, 93, widow of Lee Oliver Polk, died Sunday, February 2, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 8, 1909, in Pinewood, she was the daughter of the late James and Rosa Nelson Canty. Mrs. Polk attended Fulton public school in the Sandhill community of Pinewood. In her youth, she joined Mt. Sinai AME Church and was an active member. Later in life, she joined Zion Hill AME Church, where she was treasurer of the missionary society, member of the choir, stewardess board, class leader and “mother” of the church.

Survivors include seven children, Henry Lee (Naomi) Polk of Pinewood, Isham (Dora) Polk of Sumter, Mary Louise Polk of Winston-Salem, N.C., Louvenia P. Campbell of Winston-Salem, Ester R. Polk of the home, Louis (Cathy) Polk of Columbia and Oliver (Sharonlyn) Polk of Sumter; a brother, Henry (Sarah) Canty of Pinewood; a sister, Mary Canty of Bronx, N.Y.; a brother-in-law, Louis Simmons of Bronx; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Molsie Dow, Susan Bodger and Ellan Simmons; and three brothers, James Canty, Esau Canty and Jacob Canty.

Services were held at Zion Hill AME Church, Sandhills community of Pinewood, Thursday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Allan McKnight officiating, assisted by the Rev. Eddie C. Thomas.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.
