Wilbert L. Brunson

Wilbert Leon Brunson, 56, husband of Christine Lewis Brunson, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006, at his home, 17 E. Williams St.
Born Oct. 4, 1949, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Prudy and Lula Holiday Brunson.

He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. He confessed Christ and attended Church of God by Faith in Sumter. He was a loving husband and father as well as a true friend.

Survivors include his wife, Christine Lewis Brunson of the home; three daughters, Darlene Sonja Brunson, Bertie Lee Brunson and Beverly Jean Brunson, all of Sumter; a stepdaughter, Jacklen Denise Lewis of Manning; four sisters, Martha B. James, Ann Brunson McCray, Ella Mae Brunson and Carolyn B. Bryant, all of Sumter; two daughters, John Brunson of Sumter and Franklin Brunson of Baltimore, Md.; 11 grandchildren; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006, at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter with the Rev. Dr. Marion Newton, pastor, officiating, and Minister Nate Brock assisting.

Burial was in the Church of God by Faith Cemetery in Davis Station.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Geraldine M. Brunson

Mrs. Geraldine McFadden Brunson, daughter of Carrie Elizabeth Johnson McFadden and the late Maxwell McFadden, was born in Clarendon County on June 28, 1949, and was called into eternal rest on Aug. 30, 2006, at her home.

At an early age she accepted Christ and joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter, where she served as a faithful member of the Mass Choir and the YMA. She was educated in the public school system of Sumter County and was employed as a quality inspector by The Kodak Co. for many years.

She leaves to cherish her memory a devoted husband, Mr. Harry Lee Brunson Sr. of the home; two sons, Harry Lee (Yolanda) Brunson Jr. of Sumter and Terry Jerome Brunson of Columbia; her mother, Carrie Elizabeth Johnson McFadden of Sumter; two brothers, Nathaniel (Josephine) McFadden of Sumter, and Woodrow (Barbara) McFadden of Columbia; two sisters, Beverly (Willie) Samuel and Gwendolyn (Claude) Jones, both of Sumter; four grandchildren; and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 4, 2006, at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, senior pastor; Rickey S. Simmons, pastor; Minister Carnes Duren; and Minister Velda Rucker.

Community Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Leroy Boatwright

Leroy “Buddy” Boatwright, husband of Carolyn Cody Boatwright, died Aug. 26, 2005, at the Greenville Hospital in Jersey City, N.J.

Born in Sumter County, on March 13, 1948, he was a son of the late Edmond Boatwright and Mary Anna Green Boatwright.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Hattie Turner.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Cody Boatwright; two daughters, Chante Boatwright and Loreal Boatwright; a son, Leerre Boatwright; two granddaughters, Helina and Leyana Boatwright, and one grandson, Kamor Boatwright, all of Jersey City; seven brothers, Edmond (Lillian) Boatwright Jr. of Manning, Eddie Lee (Ann) Boatwright of Columbia, Clyde (Patricia) Boatwright of Gable, James (Alicia) Boatwright, George (Audrey) Boatwright and Terrance Boatwright, all of Sumter, and John (Judith) Boatwright of Charleston; seven sisters, Mary (Nathaniel) Osborne of Gable, Daisy (Alfred) Pearson, Runette (Buster) Eady, Anna Benjamin, Gloria McKnight, Janet Belser and Vertina (Timothy) Dinkins, all of Sumter; one uncle, Ace Boatwright of Manning; and one aunt, Suester King of Durham, N.C.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, at the Fellowship Baptist Church with the Rev. Jonathan Anderson officiating.

Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Palmer Memorial Chapel of Sumter was in charge of local funeral arrangements.

Everlina W. Canty

Everlina W. Canty, of Pinewood, died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

She was a daughter of the late Benjamin Wilson and Julia Andrews Mack, born March 10, 1913, in Clarendon County, and the widow of the late Aaron “Blue” Canty Sr. At an early age, she joined New Hope UME Church, where she was a member of the senior choir, missionary society and the adult Sunday school. She was also a member of Silver Leaf Chapter No. 333, Order of Eastern Stars.

Survivors include two sons, Aaron Canty Jr. of Pinewood and Lawrence Benjamin (Barbara) Canty of Thomasville, S.C.; two daughters, Sarah C. (Olin) Henry and Evangelist Susan (John) Burgess, both of Thomasville, N.C.; 17 grandchildren, three of whom she reared in the home, Yvonne Fortune, John Burgess Jr. and Jerald Burgess; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Rose Gamble.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, at New Hope UME Church, Pinewood, with the Rev. Leroy T. James, the Rev. Dr. H.N. Goode, the Rev. Jackie L. Holland, Evangelist Donna Canty and Evangelist Susan Burgess.

Burial followed in New Hope Cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Sara Carson

LAKELAND, Fla. - Mrs. Sara Anderson Carson, a senior vice president of People’s Bank in Lakeland and a leader in her community, died of scleroderma, Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was 77.

Born Sept. 11, 1927 in Greenwood, S.C., she relocated to Florida 50 years ago. Mrs. Carson served as a member and board director for numerous business and civic groups in Lakeland. She was an officer and director for the Citrus Regional Blood Bank and the Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce, a board member for Paint Your Heart Out, and was on the advisory boards of the University of South Florida and Explorations V Children’s Museum. She served on the city of Lakeland Advertising and Publicity Board and the Polk County Builders Associates Committee and on commercial and real estate committees for the Florida, Bankers Association.

She gave of her time to the Host Tasks Force, an ambassadorial group with the chamber that welcomed new businesses to the area. She was recipient of the “She Knows Where She’s Going Award” from Girls Inc. of Lakeland.

Mrs. Carson was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church and attended the Friendship Sunday School Class.

In addition to her son, Robert Owen Carson Jr. of Lakeland, and daughter, Kay Prothro of Manning, Mrs. Carson is survived by her sister, Marie Anderson Timmerman of Greenwood, S.C., and two grandchildren

Memorials may be sent to Friendship Sunday School Class, 1736 New Jersey Road, Lakeland, Fla. or the Scleroderma Foundation, 12 Kent Way, Suite 101, Byfield, Mass. 01922.

Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 19, 2005 at Lakeside Baptist Church in Lakeland.

Heath Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Samuel Perry Davis, M.D.

PINEWOOD – Samuel Perry Davis, M.D., 72, husband of Sheila Patricia Hey Davis, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at his home.

Born in Sumter County, June 15, 1933, he was a son of the late William Robert Davis Sr. and the late Gladys Wells Davis. Dr. Davis attended grammar schools in both the city and county of Sumter and was a 1951 graduate of Edmunds High School. He was a recipient of the James F. Byrnes Scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from The Citadel, Charleston, where he was a member of the track team. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1958. He was a former member of the Medical University of South Carolina Admissions Committee.

He was engaged in the practice of general and family medicine in Pinewood from July 1959 until recently. He was a member of the South Carolina Medical Association, 1959 to present. He was selected as Physician of the Year for outstanding community service in 1988 and the SCAFP Family Physician of the year 1992. He held staff appointments at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning, 1959-1971, and Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter, 1959 to present. He was a member of the American Medical Association; member and fellow, American Academy of Family Physicians; member and delegate to the South Carolina Medical Association; district trustee, SCMA Board of Trustees 1983 to 1989.

Service to the South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians included member, past district director, chairman of board of directors, president elect, president, alternate delegate and, presently delegate to the American Academy of Family Physicians.

He was a member and past president of Sumter-Clarendon-Lee Medical Society, Seaboard Coastline Surgeons Association, member and past chairman of the Sumter County Board of Health, past member of Wateree District Advisory Board of Health. He was a member and past president of the Sumter-Citadel Club.

He was a member of Grace Baptist Church and served as a deacon and past chairman of the board of deacons of Pinewood Baptist Church. He was a member of the board of directors James F. Brynes Scholars, and as medical adviser of the Pinewood Rescue Squad.

He was the attending medical director of National Healthcare Center, Hopewell Healthcare Center, Lake Marion Nursing Facility and formerly Windsor Manor.

He was a presenter of many in-service programs for nursing home staffs, a member of the American Medical Directors Association and South Carolina Medical Directors Association. He was Hospice medical director of Tuomey Regional Medical Center. He was former team physician at Wilson Hall School and Furman High School.

Dr. Davis was a member of the National Society Sons of the American Revolution, South Carolina Society Sons of the American Revolution, Col. Matthew Singleton Chapter, Sumter, Surgeon General National Society Sons of the American Revolution. He served as senior state president of the South Carolina Society Children of the American Revolution, senior second vice president of the National Society Children of the American Revolution, National Society Children of the American Revolution.

He was a member of Sunset Country Club, Sumter, Carolina Yacht Club, Charleston, member and past president Les Trente Dance Club and member of the Trian Dance Club.

Surviving are his wife of Pinewood; three sons, Samuel Perry (Jane) Davis Jr. of Spartanburg, Richard Leslie (Lisa) Davis of Norfolk, Va., and Gordon Taylor (Ammi) Davis of Columbia; three grandchildren, Richard Davis, Sarah Davis, and Danielle Davis; two brothers, John C. (May) Davis Marion H. (Judy) Davis Sr., all of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Robert Davis and Richard Gordon Davis; and a sister, Elizabeth Ardis.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, at Grace Baptist Church, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. James Chandler officiating.

Burial followed in the Sumter Cemetery.

John G. Dinkins Jr.

Retired Lt. Col. John Grier “Sonny” Dinkins Jr., 81, widower of Martha Mooneyhan Dinkins, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, in the Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Oct. 12, 1923, in Manning, he was a son of the late John Grier and Mary Broughton Dinkins. He was a graduate of Manning High School and a 1949 graduate of Clemson University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in agronomy. He served our nation in the Armed Forces for more than 40 years, was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, and served during the Korean War and in Vietnam. He was a farmer, bird dog handler, and sportsman. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Manning, elder emeritus, and Sunday school teacher for 48 years. Mr. Sonny was a member of St. Peter’s Masonic Lodge.

Surviving are a daughter, Deborah D. (Jesse) Thompson of Manning; three sons, John Grier Dinkins III and the Rev. Walter M. (Marilyn) Dinkins of Wilmington, N.C., and Michael J. (Sherry) Dinkins of Manning; brother-in-law, Harry C. Wannamaker III of Orangeburg; cousin, Edward M. Dinkins; six grandchildren, Jay Thompson, Jennifer T. Parler, Nikki, Grier, and John G. Dinkins IV, and Heather Shelton; two great-grandchildren, Brice and Gavin Parler.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, in the Presbyterian Church at Manning with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

Burial with full military honors followed in Manning Cemetery.

To the glory of God and in memory of John Grier Dinkins Jr., memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Church at Manning, P.O. Box 207, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Virginia G. Farr

Virginia Geddings Farr, 66, widow of Donald L. Farr, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Sam Geddings and the late Ruth Hinson Geddings. She was a member of Jefferson Road Freewill Baptist Church and retired from Santee Print Works.

Survivors include one son, Steven A. Farr; one daughter, Felicia Farr Wilson; one brother, Cecil Wayne Geddings; one sister, Jean Callen; and one grandson, Dennis Ray Patrick Jr., all of Sumter.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rusty Conyers officiating.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Annie Mae D. Miller

Annie Mae Dingle Miller, 87, widow of James Lee Miller Sr., died Aug. 31, 2005, at her residence.

Born July 7, 1918, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Joe Dingle and Lillie Dingle-Cubbage and stepdaughter of the late James Cubbage. She was a member of Mount Sinai Holiness Church. Her former church memberships were with Mount Chapel Baptist Church and Antioch Baptist Church, where she often attended. She was a member of the YMCA, New Light Chapter, OES, Manning Branch NAACP, and an ardent supporter of the civil rights movement. Her education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County.

Survivors include five sons, James Lee Miller Jr., Charles Edward Miller Sr., Herman Alexander Gibson Sr., David Louis Miller Sr. and Russell Anthony Miller; six daughters, Annette Louise Murphy, Verna Generia Brunson, Alberta Ruth DuBose, Frances Deloris Miller, Mattie Vertelle Mashoe and Marilyn Estelle Wilson; five brothers, Joe Dingle, George Cubbage, Ernest Cubbage, Bishop Willie Cubbage and Deacon Henry Cubbage; two sisters, Rosa Lee Lemon and Ester Mae Davis; 29 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters and one grandson.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, at Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Jeffcoat, Willie Davis, Minister Shirley Waiters, O’Donald Dingle and Jerial Dingle officiating.

Burial was in the Hilton Cemetery, Jordan community.

Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.
