Alexander Morris

Alexander Morris died Saturday evening, Aug. 27, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

He was born on Oct. 1, 1919, to Brown and Susanna Lemon Morris of Summerton. He was a faithful member of Mount Zion AME Church and participated in many auxiliaries. Alexander was a class leader in his church for a number of years, a trustee, steward and was on the church senior and gospel train (a compilation of male singers from various area churches). He was also a member of Masonic Lodge No. 366. He was married to the late Ollie Mae McBride-Morris for 54 years.

He leaves to mourn his passing, 11 adopted children, Hattie William of Philadelphia, Willie P. Morris of Summerton, Mamie (Randy) Mellerson of Rosedale, N.Y., Alfonza Starks, Eartha Lee (Abraham) McCray, Annie Liza (Willie) Johnson of Summerton, Mazie Bell (General Lee) Lemon, Tiny Mae Frank, the Rev. Willie M. (Jean) Starks of Miami, and Josephine Oliver of Baltimore; 46 grandchildren, one who lived with him, Joycesteen Brunson; 85 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, at Mount Zion AME Church with the Rev. Willie Heggins, pastor, and the Rev. Willie Starks officiating.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

King Funeral Home of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Amos Nicholson

COLUMBIA – Amos Nicholson, son of the late Mr. Henry Winchester and Mrs. Patsy Nicholson, was born in Rockingham, N.C., on March 8, 1927.

Mr. Nicholson was united in holy matrimony to the late Mrs. Clara Nicholson.

He died Friday, Sept. 4, 2005, at Palmetto Baptist Hospital in Columbia.

Mr. Nicholson was a member of Prayer House Mission Church in Davis Station where he played the washboard.

He leaves to cherish his memory one daughter, Donna (Johnny) Laws of Lamham, Md.; two sons, Kevin Nicholson of Summerton and Larry Gregory of Florida; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a host of other friends and relatives; and two special caregivers, Pastor Eartha Carter and Mr. Michael Bennett.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Karen Nicholson; two sons, Palestine Gregory and Blancher Gregory.

Funeral services for Mr. Nicholson were held on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at Prayer House Mission Church. Services were officiated by the Revs. Eartha Carter, Floyd Knowlin, Sampson Pearson and James Blanding.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Mary W. O'Bryan

Mary Worsham O’Bryan, 88, widow of Francis Mills O’Bryan, died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, in the Presbyterian Home in Florence. Mrs. O’Bryan was previously a resident of Sardinia.

Born Oct. 2, 1916, in Kershaw County, she was a daughter of the late Willie and Eleda Burgess Worsham. She was a retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service after 47 years of service as a clerk, postmaster and rural carrier. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Manning, and an affiliate member of Sardinia Presbyterian Church. She served as treasurer for many years for the Women of the Church at Sardinia. She was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and also for the Mental Health Association. She was a member of Clarendon County Soil & Water Conservation. She was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Surviving are a son, Cecil D. (Joanne McFaddin) O’Bryan of Augusta, Ga.; two grandchildren, Mary O’Bryan (Richard) Lewis of Augusta and Cecil D. (Jeanne O.) O’Bryan Jr. of Titusville, Fla.; six great-grandchildren, Austin, Bryan, Jessica, Robert, Spenser and Nathan; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, in Sardinia Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Drs. Gordon Reed and William J. Holmes officiating.

Burial followed in Sardinia-Gable Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Sardinia Presbyterian Church, General Delivery, Sardinia, S.C. 29143, to the Presbyterian Church at Manning, P.O. Box 207, Manning, S.C. 29102 or to the Presbyterian Home of S.C., 2350 W. Lucas St., Florence, S.C. 29501.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Percy Lee Peterson

Percy Lee Peterson, 45, died Aug. 29, 2005, at his residence, Manning Lane, Apt. No. 42, Manning.

Born Sept. 19, 1959, in Manning, he was a son of Clara Hilton Peterson and the late Deacon Sam Peterson Sr. He was a graduate of Manning High School Class of 1978. He joined Fellowship Baptist Church at an early age.

Survivors besides his mother, Clara H. Peterson of Manning, include one son, Percy Peterson Jr. of New Zion; four brothers, Sam (Patricia) Peterson of Baltimore, Md., Frank (Charlotte) Peterson of Sumter, Johnny Peterson and Arthur Peterson, both of Manning; and three sisters, Pastor Annie Lou (Don) Riley of Paxville, Nancy Lemon and Shirley (Willie) Lloyd, both of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, at Fellowship Baptist Church in Manning, with Pastor Jonathan Anderson officiating, assisting the Revs. Dennis Jeffcoat, Sylvester Hicks and Minister Ethel Lemon.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Pearl V. Reeves

Pearl Virginia Reeves, 80, wife of Jess Clinton Reeves, died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born May 22, 1925, in Bryson City, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Will and Lillie Gossett Schuler. She was retired manager of the Piggly Wiggly in Bryson City, and was a member of Hillside Baptist Church in Bryson City.

Surviving besides her husband of Summerton are four sisters, Doris Churchwell of Hemet, Calif., Thelma Ball of Seaford, Del., Irene Johnson of Lake Wiley, and Betty Wilson of Wisconsin; and a brother, Bobby Schuler of Lenoir, N.C.

Graveside services were held on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, in Swain Memorial Park Cemetery in Bryson City.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Eddie Witherspoon

OLANTA – Eddie Witherspoon, 53, son of Lottie Spates Witherspoon and the late James W. Witherspoon, died Aug. 28, 2005, at his residence in Olanta.

Born March 29, 1952, in Turbeville, he graduated from Walker Gamble High School in 1970. In his youth he joined Hickory Grove Baptist Church. He was later honorably discharged from the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his mother, Lottie S. Witherspoon of Turbeville; five brothers Deacon Willie (Edna) Witherspoon, Gerald (Sharon) Witherspoon, and Alix Witherspoon, all of Turbeville, Curly Nathaniel Witherspoon of Baltimore and Bobby Witherspoon of Florence; three sisters, Vertelle Witherspoon of Baltimore, Winnie (Deacon Melvin) Ricketts of Turbeville and Pastor Sylvia McFadden of Columbus, Ga.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 5, 2005, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Old Manning Road in Turbeville, with Pastor Zander Davis officiating, assisting Evangelist Rhonda Keels.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC was in charge of the arrangements.

Lee E. Briggs

Lee Ernest Briggs, husband of Barbara J. Baxter Briggs, died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born August 21, 1948 in Baltimore, Mr. Briggs was the son of Oscar Briggs Sr. and the late Juanita Butler Briggs and stepson of Carrie Briggs.

Mr. Briggs attended the public schools of Clarendon County and recieved his GED from Job Corps. He was employed at Interlake Material Handling Division of Sumter.

Survivors besides his wife, father and stepmother include, three sons, Anthony (Sasha) Briggs of Milwaukee, Lee Ernest Briggs Jr. and Jimmy Lee Briggs, both of Nashville, Tenn.; two daughters, Barbara (Joe) Simon and Janice Briggs, both of Columbia; four brothers, Thomas (Ann) Briggs, Marcus (Minnie) Briggs, both of Manning, Walter (Susan) Briggs and Johnny Lee Briggs, both of Wilmington, N.C.; three sisters, Evangelist Margie (the Rev. Martin) Conyers, Maxine (John) Carraway and Mary Lawson, all of Manning; one foster daughter, Courtney Baxter of Columbia; and four aunts, one uncle, seven grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by three bothers, James Earl Briggs, Oscar Briggs Jr., Marvin Briggs and two sisters, Lucille Briggs and Willie Mae Briggs Gamble.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel at 114 N. Church St. in Manning, with the Rev. Willie Wright, pastor of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter, officiating.

Burial was in Manning Cemetery.

Arnice Q. Walker

Arnice Q. Singleton Walker, 40, wife of Stanley Walker, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 22, 1966, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a daughter of Cathryn Smith Singleton and the late Jonathon Singleton. She was a graduate of Edward R. Murrow in Brooklyn and received a certificate in Human Resources Administration from Borough Manhattan Community College. She worked many years for the city of New York before relocating to Sumter. She was a member of Pilgrim Cathedral of East New York where she received her Christian education, which served as the foundation of her faith.

Survivors include her husband, Stanley B. Walker; two sons, Stanley Lazarus Walker Jr. and Sean Jonathan-David Walker; mother, Cathryn Smith Singleton of Sumter; six brothers, Derek (Tameeka) Singleton of Brooklyn, Roosevelt (Precious) Singleton of Woodbridge, Va., Gerron (Sandra) Singleton of Turbeville, Jonathan (Denise) Singleton Jr., Gregory (Christine) Singleton and Terrance (Lacy) Singleton, all of Sumter; two sisters, Theresa (Leon) Clea and Victoria (Jeffery) Boyd, both of Sumter; grandmother, Moriah Singleton Murray; mother and father-in-law, David and Donnie Walker, both of Smoaks; four uncles; four aunts; two brothers-in-law; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. James Blassingame officiating, assisted by Bishop George M. Shorts, eulogist, Apostle Larry Carter, Pastor Shirika Falls and Elder Wesley Maple.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Daisy W. Sweat

Daisy Witherspoon Sweat, 103, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2006.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Manning, with the Rev. Lucretia Pugh, pastor, officiating, the Rev. Fred Snyder delivering the eulogy and the Rev. Jack Morant assisting.

Burial was in St. Matthews Cemetery.

George Spaun Jr.

PINEWOOD – George Spaun Jr., 90, widower of Jessie Johnson Spaun, died Sept. 3, 2006, at his residence in Pinewood.

Born June 19, 1930, in Pinewood, he was a son of the late George Spann Sr. and Malvenia Small Spann. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County and in Wilmington, N.C. At an early age, he moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. and remained there for 62 years. He was a contractor for the Brooklyn Navy Yard and worked for Poly Technical College and Sal-Nash Wood Inc.

Survivors include one son, Jimmie V. (Beverly) Spann of Jamaica Queens, N.Y.; two daughters, Vivian Staton of Las Vegas, Nev. and Virgie Spann (Stanley) of Staten Island, N.Y.; three brothers, Edward Spann, Johnny Spann and Harry (Annie Mae) Spann, all of Pinewood; one sister, Thelma S. Holland of Pinewood; special niece, Deloris S. (Albertus) Jones of Summerton; 19 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five sons.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Sept. 8, 2006 at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with Elder James Preston Brunson, pastor, officiating, and Presiding Elder Albert Thomas.

Burial was in New Hope Community Cemetery in the Pinewood community.
