ROGER D. BLACK

Roger Dale Black, 46, husband of Connie Roberts Black, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Born in Rockdale County, Ga., he was a son of Betty Sue Wiley Black and the late Grady Black. Mr. Black attended First Assembly of God Church. He was a self-employed truck driver. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter and his mother of Conyers, Ga., include two daughters, Amanda B. Smith and Shannon B. Evans, both of Sumter; two brothers, Milford Black of Rembert and Charles Black of Tullulah Falls, Ga.; and three grandchildren, Zachary and Courtney Evans and Jacob Smith, all of Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at First Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Phil Simun officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, and at other times at the home, 550 Caroland Drive. EUNICE B. GRAY

KINGSTREE — Eunice Olivia Brown Gray, 86, widow of Ralph Edward Gray Sr., formerly of Kingstree and a resident of Morningside in Sumter, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at Morningside. Born in Kershaw County and raised in the Church Home Orphanage in York, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Jackson Brown and Lula Belle Barnes Brown Cauthen. Mrs. Gray graduated from York High School in 1934 and trained in the nursing program of the State Hospital in Columbia. She worked as a secretary for her husband’s business, Gray’s Used Parts, in Kingstree until their retirement in 1961. She later worked with her son part-time as a secretary for G&G sales in Kingstree. She was a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church, the Katie Cole Circle, the Wallace Connor Sunday School class and the Order of Eastern Star. She was married on Oct. 31, 1937, in the chapel of the York Orphanage, and they were honored with a 50th wedding anniversary in 1987 at their church by their children and great-grandchildren.. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ralph Edward “Eddie” Gray Jr. and Harriette Gray of Lake City; a daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Larry Williamson of Manning; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and her dearest friend, Mary Frances Jarrett of Kingstree. She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Gail Gray; four brothers, William, Theodore, Jack and Clarence Brown; and two sisters, Pauline Mozena and Priscilla “Pat” Mincey. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Williamsburg Funeral Home. Burial will be in Kingstree Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to The York Place, Episcopal Church Home, where she was reared until her graduation from high school, 234 Kings Mountain St., York, SC 29744-1131. CLARA M. JENNING

Clara Mae Jenning died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born July 4, 1943, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Clara Jenning and the late P.S. Dubose. She attended Ebenezer High School. In her youth, she joined Mount Olive AME Church, where she served on the Colclough Missionary Unit for many years. Survivors include two sons, Eddie Jenning and Robert Jenning, both of Sumter; two daughters, Brenda Davis and Linda Hamlin, both of Sumter; three brothers, Larry Jenning and Raymond Jenning, both of Sumter, and Bobbie Jenning of Camden; six sisters, Lucille Dixon of Fayetteville, N.C., and Emma Fulton, Princess Jenning, Annie Mae Johnson, Patricia Jenning and Maebell Jenning, all of Sumter; 10 grandchildren; and a special friend of the family, Thomasenia Council. She was preceded in death by a son, Clarence Jenning. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Olive AME Church in Woodrow with the Rev. Timothy A. Johnson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Roberta Wilson. Burial will be in Colclough Cemetery in Sumter. Pallbearers will be members of the Woodrow Elite Club. Flower bearers will be members of the Colclough Missionary Society and the Sisters with Wings Club. The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home, 46 Amonn Road, Sumter. GABLE — James Thomas McKenzie Sr., 77, husband of Rosa Lee McFadden McKenzie, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at Ron McNair Nursing Center in Lake City after an illness. Born March 2, 1921, in the New Zion community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Ezekiel McKenzie and Olivia Rose McKenzie. Mr. McKenzie attended Clarendon County public schools. After reaching adulthood, he joined Howard Chapel AME Church. Survivors besides his wife of Ron McNair Nursing Center in Lake City include a son, Wilson Burgess of Kingstree; a grandson he reared as his own, Leroy McFadden Jr. of Kingstree; a brother, George McKenzie of Gable; five sisters, Ella Mae Brown and Essie Mae Ham, both of New Zion, Shirley McKenzie of Gable, Sadie Ceaser of Manning, and Willie Mae Brown of San Diego, Calif.; 14 additional grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Mr. McKenzie was preceded in death by two brothers, Roland Burgess and James McKenzie Jr.; and a sister, Mattie Lee McKenzie McFadden. Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday at Howard Chapel AME Church in New Zion with the Rev. Edward Roberts, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jerome McCray. Burial will be in Burgess Cemetery, Old Manning Road, New Zion. The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Shirley McKenzie, Route 1, Box 32-B, Cecil McFadden Road, Gable. Betty L. McPeak, 71, widow of Johnie M. McPeak, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Caples, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Walton Green and Nancy C. Miller Green. Survivors include a son, Johnie Mark McPeak of Kimball, W.Va.; a brother, Kenneth E. Green of Welch, W.Va.; and a sister, Margaret G. Hancock of Sumter. George Edward “Ned” Richardson Sr., 82, husband of Mary Rogers Richardson, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Born in Sumter, he was the oldest son of the late Eddie Banks Richardson and the late Mary Jane Barfield Richardson. Mr. Richardson was a Baptist and a retired self-employed scrap metal recycler. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include four daughters, Mrs. Darlene Ratchford and husband, Mike, of Pensacola, Fla., Ms. Marti Richardson of Sumter, Mrs. Pam Cromer and husband, Gerald, of Saluda and Mrs. Patty Louise Brown and husband, Bobby, of Ninety Six; a son, George Edward Richardson Jr. and wife, Linda, of Ninety Six; two sisters, Fannie Pate Witherspoon of Boston, Mass., and Rhoda Hair of Sumter; a brother, Jack Dempsey Richardson Sr.; four grandchildren, Leah Marie Ratchford and Darryl Gable and wife, Candy, of Pensacola, Fla., and Jeremy and Joey Cromer, both of Saluda; a great-grandchild, Jessie Gable of Pensacola; and a special dog, Jake. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Tom Richardson and Bob Richardson, both of Sumter. MANNING — Margaret Thersa Farmer Richburg, 69, wife of Leroy Richburg, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at her home after an brief illness. Born May 16, 1931, in Carvers Creek Township, Cumberland County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Eddie Farmer and Tishie Bell Farmer. Mrs. Richburg attended Shawneadow Elementary School and graduated from Annie Chestnut High School in North Carolina. After moving to Baltimore, Md., she attended Eastern United Methodist Church. After marriage, she joined St. Paul Baptist Church, where she served faithfully on the usher board and choir. After relocating to Manning, she joined Community Temple Church, where she served faithfully. She was employed in many careers including as a bank teller, cashier, receptionist and cosmetologist. Survivors besides her husband of the home include a granddaughter, Richelle Wallace of Baltimore; and three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Christine Brown, Estelle Ferguson and Ada Elliott, all of Fayetteville, N.C., and Betty Ferguson of Baltimore. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis C. Williams; and seven brothers, James, Otis, Lacy, Richard, Chester, Eugene and C. Foreman. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Community Temple Church, U.S. 301 North, with Bishop Jeffrey Johnson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. GEORGETOWN — Ann Gasque Williams, 65, wife of Willson McKewn “Mack” Williams, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. Born July 10, 1935, in Mullins, she was a daughter of the late John Leon Gasque and Virginia Myrtle Hood Gasque. She moved to Marion as a young child when her father became sheriff of Marion County. Mrs. Williams graduated from Marion High School in 1953 and Columbia College in 1957, where she was one of the founders of the Ludy Bowl. After graduation, she taught school in Georgetown, and she later taught at Moore Junior High in Florence for a time. After returning to Georgetown, she was employed for several years as a caseworker with the Georgetown County Welfare Department. After her marriage in 1964, she taught at Winyah Junior High School and later worked as the attendance clerk at J.B. Beck Middle School until her retirement on June 28, 1997. She was a member of Georgetown Presbyterian Church and the Columbia College Alumnae Association. Survivors besides her husband of Georgetown include a son, Willson McKewn “Will” Williams Jr. and his wife, Ellen Moore Williams, of Sumter; two sisters, Jean G. Hilton of Charlotte, N.C., and Bobbie Gasque of Loris; a grandson, Jacob McKewn Williams of Sumter; six nephews, five nieces, two great-nephews and two great-nieces. Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by a brother, J. Leon Gasque Jr. of Columbia. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Georgetown Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Ben Sloan. Burial will be in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Georgetown chapel of Mayer Funeral Home. CHARLESTON — Susan Ann Miller Stauber, 51, wife of Harold W. Stauber Sr., died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at a local hospital. Born Nov. 15, 1948, in Morristown County, N.J., she was a daughter of Vernon R. Miller and Doris D’Annunzio. She was a sister of John Miller of Sumter. DALZELL — Deacon James Alston Jr., 88, of 131 McDaniel Road, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Springdale Health Care Center in Camden. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late James and Hattie Josey Alston. Mr. Alston was a member of Union Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. Survivors include three sons, James A. Alston of Washington, D.C., Joseph Alston of Rembert and Luke Alston of Silver Spring, Md.; a daughter, Carrie L. Johnson of Dalzell; three sisters, Lillie M. Greene of Camden and Mattie M. Cauthen and Beulah H. Dixon, both of Rembert; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Remembrance of Brown Funeral Home in Camden. Arthur B. Dewil, 70, husband of Sarah Geraldine “Jerry” Harrington Dewil, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at his home. Born in Toro, La., he was a son of the late Arthur Dewil and Nettie Evans Dewil Lofton. Mr. Dewil was a member of Sumter Baptist Temple. He was a retired U.S. Air Force technical sergeant and also retired from Cities Supply Co. in 1987. He was previously employed by Glasscock Trucking Co. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two sons, Thomas “Tom” Dewil of Valley Stream, N.Y., and William “Bill” Dewil of Sumter; a daughter, Linda Blocher of Roseburg, Ore.; four brothers, Eugene Lofton, LeVon Lofton, Leroy Lofton and Chester Lofton, all of Louisiana; two sisters, Linda Lofton and Faye Brannon, both of Louisiana; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Neal Lofton; a brother, Lester Dewil; and a granddaughter, Tonya Glazier. NORMAN HERRINGTON

Norman Herrington, 69, husband of Louise Dennis Herrington, died Friday, June 16, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born July 22, 1930, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late William Herrington and Lucy Herrington. Mr. Herrington attended Sumter County public schools. In his youth, he joined Union Baptist Church, where he served on the trustee board. Survivors besides his wife of the home include a son, Gary Herrington of Sumter; four daughters, Alberta Stuckey and Malotte Herrington, both of Camden, Ruthie Wooden of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Barbara Spruill of New York; two brothers, Stoney Herrington of New York and Henry Speech of Columbus, Ga.; three sisters, Marie Grant of Long Island, N.Y., and Susie Williams and Willie Mae Martin, both of Rembert; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Alvin Ellis Herrington. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie D. Dennis officiating, assisted by Dr. Charles H. Davis. Burial will be in Union Baptist Church cemetery in Rembert. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. DOUGLAS B. JAMES

Douglas Bernard “Skeet” James, 86, husband of Louise Boyd James of 27 years, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at NHC Healthcare of Sumter. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late J.T. and Marie Jenkins James. He was a World War II veteran and retired from the Air Force Reserve. He was a retired agent with Jefferson Pilot Life Insurance Co. of Sumter and a charter member of Jefferson Pilot Hall of Fame. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in Columbia and was a member of the USC basketball and baseball teams. He served as past president with the following: The Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Sumter Red Cross and YMCA. He was a commander of American Legion Post 15. He was a member of and served as chairman of the Sumter Gamecock Club. He organized the first Little League baseball program. He served as chairman of the Little League Commission for 25 years and chairman of the American Legion Baseball Commission. He was the first recipient of the John J. Riley Award for service to youth in Sumter County and was inducted into the Sumter Athletic Hall of Fame. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a son, Douglas B. James Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Barbara James Teike of Tucson, Ariz.; two stepsons, William Boyd of Florence and Lawrence Boyd of Salters; two brothers, Robert S. James and Charles James, both of Sumter; and nine grandchildren, Lee Mass Smith, Michael Wayne Mass, Robyn Mass Schlarb, Sutton Boyd Davies, Mary Evelyn Boyd, Kathryn Boyd, Sims Boyd, Laura Boyd and Taylor Boyd. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lydia Lee James; and three brothers, Thomas, Francis and Edwin James. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with Dr. Phillip E. Reynolds officiating. The family will receive friends at the home, 40 Palmer Drive. MANNING — Marie Miller Johnson, 86, widow of Coleman Johnson Sr., died Friday, June 16, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born May 25, 1913, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Dawson and Emma Miller. Mrs. Johnson attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she became a member of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include five grandsons, Mayor Kevin Johnson of Manning, Derrick Johnson of Manning, Larry Johnson of Greensboro, N.C., Ivory Wilson of Sumter and Bernie Johnson of Baltimore, Md.; a granddaughter, Jackie Hatton of Baltimore; and two daughters-in-law, Sallie Johnson of Manning and Marion S. Johnson of Baltimore. She was preceded in death by four sons, John Berry “J.B.” Johnson, Coleman Johnson Jr., Willie Johnson and Bernard E. Johnson; and a daughter, Mary Emma Johnson. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, 105 Dinkins St., with the Rev. George P. Windley, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery. ALCOLU — Heyward Allen Scott Jr., 49, husband of Margaret Sweat Scott, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia after a brief illness. Born June 20, 1950, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Heyward Allen Scott Sr. and Dorothy Daney Scott. Mr. Scott attended Alcolu Elementary School and graduated from Manning Training School in 1968. He also attended Sumter Area Technical College in Sumter. He was employed with Georgia-Pacific in Alcolu for 29 years. In his youth, he joined St. Mark AME Church, where he served faithfully as assistant superintendent of the Sunday school, assistant pastor steward and as a member of the trustee board and gospel choir. Survivors besides his wife of the home and his parents of Alcolu include two daughters, Tamara Scott of the home and Barbara Simon of Manning; six brothers, Richard Scott, Edmond Scott, Livingston Scott, Lynn Scott and John Scott, all of Alcolu, and Lawrence Scott of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Dorothy Miller of Manning; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday at St. Mark AME Church, Alderman Camp Road, Alcolu, with the Rev. Leroy Green, pastor, and the Rev. Rufus Gaymon officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dorothy Mouzon, Brother Franklin McCants, the Rev. Clarence Hilton and the Rev. Northern Miller. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. for viewing. MATTHEW THOMPSON

PINEWOOD — Matthew Thompson, husband of Nancy Lambert Thompson, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born Aug. 1, 1939, in Pinewood, he was a son of the late Adam Brunson and Daisy Green. He was the adopted son of Nellie Sinkler Thompson and the late David Thompson. Mr. Thompson was reared in a Christian environment and was a member of Antioch AME Church. He attended Sumter County public schools, and he received an associate degree from Denmark Technical College in Orangeburg. He served active duty in the U.S. Army for two years, and 18 years in the Army Reserve, retiring as sergeant E-5. He was employed with the New York City Transit Authority, where he received numerous awards for outstanding service and from which he retired. Survivors besides his wife of Pinewood and his adoptive mother of Sumter include a son, Matthew David Thompson of Pinewood; his stepfather, Willie Green of Bronx, N.Y.; two brothers, William Green of Bloomington, Calif., and Robert Green of Decatur, Ga.; a sister, Jacqueline Reed-Brown of Bronx, N.Y.; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Job’s Mortuary in Sumter. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Antioch AME Church in Rimini with the Rev. Dr. S.R. Miott, pastor, officiating, assisted by Elder George A. Ashford, the Rev. M.G. Walters and the Rev. Leonard Simmons. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery. ROSA M. WILLIAMS

Rosa Marion Williams, 87, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 12, 1912, in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Mamie Sharper Williams. She attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth, she joined New Bethel Baptist Church and was a member of Missionary Circle No. III until her health failed. Survivors include six nephews, Earl Bracey, Isaac Williams and Jerry Gaines, all of Sumter, Maj. Lisbon Williams of Fort Jackson, Anthony Gaines of Spartanburg and Terry Gaines of Jacksonville, N.C.; nine nieces, Gladys Harvin of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ester Green of Wilmington, N.C., Mary Mayham of Tuscaloosa, Ala., the Rev. Mamie Williams of Arnold, Md., and Larrine Payne, Ora Bell Johnson, Margaret Simon, Geraldine Scriven and Maggie Middleton, all of Sumter. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Isaac, James Charlie and John Williams; and a sister, Mary Williams. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. W.A. Wright, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Mamie Williams. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery. Members of the church and friends will be pallbearers. Missionaries and ushers of the church will be flower bearers. The funeral procession will leave at 2:05 p.m. from the home of her niece, Larrine Payne, 1725 Stadium Road. The family will receive friends at the same home. Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

MARGARET I. KINDER

KINGSTREE — Margaret I. “Boodie” Kinder, 84, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at the Presbyterian Home in Florence. Born in Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late Virgil Kinder Sr. and Isabel Weeks Kinder. Ms. Kinder was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was retired from Southern Cities Oil Co. She was a charter member of the Kingstree Pilot Club, a former member of the Kingstree Town Council and a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school for more than 35 years. Survivors include a brother, Wesley Kinder of Honolulu, Hawaii. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Williamsburg Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Presbyterian Home Chapel in Florence. Memorials may be made to Williamsburg Presbyterian Church or to the residents aid fund of the Presbyterian Home in Florence. Williamsburg Funeral Home of Kingstree is in charge of arrangements.

DR. HENRY E. HARDIN
FORMER MORRIS COLLEGE PRESIDENT

Dr. Henry Everett Hardin, husband of Carrie Wallace Hardin, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at Mariner Health of Sumter East. Born Oct. 18, 1912, in Fort Motte, he was a son of the late Henry Everett Hardin and Elizabeth Green Hardin. Dr. Hardin was a former academic dean, interim president and president of Morris College. He attended South Carolina public schools and graduated from Benedict College. He also studied at Union Theological Seminary, New York University, Duke University and Morris College. He was a member of several professional and religious organizations, including the Council for the Advancement of Small Colleges, the Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce, NEA, the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina and the Progressive National Baptist Convention. He was a former pastor at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Eastover and Saint Paul Baptist Church in Mullins. He was a member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter. He was a recipient of Shiloh Baptist Church’s Contribution to Mankind Award and he also was recognized by the President’s Commission on Equal Opportunity. Survivors in addition to his wife of Sumter include a daughter Henrietta Butler and her husband, Richard Butler, of Baltimore, Md.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. Dr. Hardin was preceded in death by 12 siblings, his stepdaughter, Isadora Wallace, and his stepgrandson, Carl Wallace. The funeral will be noon Monday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Marion Newton officiating. The Rev. Dr. Ralph Canty, the Rev. Larry Weston and Drs. L.P. Graham, Isaiah Harvey and Luns Richardson will assist. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. William Lafayette Morris, 93, widower of Anne Jackson Morris, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sardis, Ga., he was a son of the late William Andrew Morris and the late George Murray Morris. Mr. Morris was a member of First Baptist Church and Claremont Masonic Lodge No. 64. He was the retired owner of Air Cool Awnings Co. Survivors include a daughter, Sylvia Morris Brunson of Sumter; a sister, Kathryn Kennedy of Statesboro, Ga., a granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann White; and his great-granddaughter. Graveside services with Masonic Rites will be 3 p.m. Sunday in Sumter Cemetery, with Dr. Kirk Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of his daughter, 135 Henrietta Drive. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.

MANNING — Margaree Holliday York, 47, died Friday, August 11, 2000, at a Columbia hospital.
Born Sept. 4, 1952, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Willie Jones and the adopted daughter of the late Tamara White Holliday.

SUMMERTON — Mary “C.C.” Lawson Lawyer, widow of the Rev. Moses Lawyer, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Trident Regional Hospital in North Charleston.
Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Lutenia Lawson.
The family will receive friends at the home, Route 3, Box 328, Lillie Martin Road.

ORON J. HALLMAN

Oron J. “O.J.” Hallman, 80, husband of Hazelee Craps Hallman, died Monday, May 1, 2000, at a local nursing center. Born in Lexington County, he was a son of the late William Shepherd Hallman and Hattie Viola Burgess Hallman. Mr. Hallman was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and served on the church council for a number of years. He was founder and president of O.J. Hallman. He served on the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the State Commission of Forestry. He served a tour with the Engineer, U.S. Army, South Atlantic Division, in South America. He was the first PTA president of Lemira School and also served on the board of the American Wholesale Parts Association. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include three sons, Burnell Oron “Sonny” Hallman of Lake City, and Ronald Lee Hallman and Elton Joshua Hallman Sr., both of Sumter; a daughter, Hazel Patricia Gause of Lake City; three brothers, Dan B. Hallman of Batesburg-Leesville, Jakyel V. Hallman of Sumter and Glenn Clifton Hallman of Lexington County; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. James Lutheran Church with the Rev. Tony Metze officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 723 Meadow Circle. Memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran Church Building Fund. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ROCKLAND, Maine — Mary Nelouise Hastings, 74, widow of Robert J. Hastings, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at Shore Village Nursing Center. Born March 16, 1926, in Sumter, S.C., she was a daughter of the late S. Norris and Mary L. Burke Richardson. Mrs. Hastings attended Sumter High School. Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, Mary Claudia and Dennis Skinner of Kent, Wash., Nancy and Richard Winslow of Thomaston and Terry and Darrell Larrabee of Owis Head; a sister and her husband, Betty R. and Monte H. Callen of Sumter; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and special cousins, Claudia R. Withington of Johns Island, S.C., Van Richardson Jr. of Eutawville, S.C., Charles R. Johnson of Olanta, S.C., and Zola J. Saunders of Sumter. A visiting hour will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Davis Funeral Home, 35 Knox St., Thomaston, with a graveside committal service at 10 a.m. Saturday in Village Cemetery in Thomaston with the Rev. Cliff Gardner officiating.

LYNCHBURG — Robert “Junior” McCray Jr. died Friday, April 28, 2000, at the University Hospital in Augusta, Ga. Born in Lynchburg, he was the first child of Robert McCray Sr. and the late Licenia Thomas McCray. Mr. McCray drove a school bus at Dennis High School in Bishopville, where he graduated, and then joined the U.S. Army. After his discharge, he was employed at the veterans hospital in Augusta until he retired. Survivors besides his father of the Carriage Village in Sumter include a brother, Joseph McCray and his wife, Frances, of New York; two uncles, Jeffery Thomas of New York and Walter Thomas Jr. of McCoy Nursing Home in Bishopville; three aunts, Laureen Duren and her husband, Carnes, Icyalee Felix, Mary Thomas and Mrs. Daniel McCray, all of Lynchburg; and other relatives and friends. MARY E. MELLETTE

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Mary Elizabeth Mellette died Sunday, April 30, 2000, in Charlottesville. Born in October 1914 in Sumter County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Langdon Hamilton Mellette and Mary Elizabeth Bradford Mellette. Miss Mellette graduated from Hillcrest High School and attended Winthrop and Montreat colleges. During World War II, from 1942 to 1946, she served as a lieutenant in the Navy WAVES. After resigning her Navy commission, she joined the U.S. Department of State in 1947. In addition to her service with the State Department’s Washington, D.C., offices, she served in American embassies and consulates around the world before retiring from federal service in 1970. She was a member of the Society of First Families of South Carolina and the Huguenot Society of South Carolina. Survivors include four nieces, Mary Drew Johnson of Smith, Ala., Amanda Drew Manning of Arlington, Va., Linda Mellette Morris of Charlotte, N.C., and Gail Mellette Welker of Climax, N.C.; and three nephews, William Mellette of Charleston, the Rev. Richard Mellette of Brossard, Quebec, and Morgan Mellette of Gainesville, Ga. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Sumter Cemetery in Sumter, S.C., with the Rev. Philip C. ZELMA U. WILLIAMS

WACO, Texas — Zelma Quincy Underwood Williams, 100, died Saturday, April 29, 2000, in a local nursing home. Born Dec. 18, 1899, in Gorman, Texas, she was a daughter of the late W.J. and Daisy Smyers Underwood. She attended high school in Miami, Ariz., and business school in Abilene. She worked as a bank secretary in Spur, Texas, and Santa Monica, Calif., for five years. She married Charles Berry Williams of Sipe Springs, Texas, on Feb. 22, 1925, and they moved to Waco in 1925 and founded Williams Drug Stores. Mr. Williams died Oct. 1, 1984. Mrs. Williams had been a member of Austin Avenue United Methodist Church since the early 1930s. For a number of years she taught the Sunday school class of fourth-grade children and was a member of the Amica Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Porcelain Art Guild of Waco, and a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 842 in Waco. Survivors include two daughters, Lynn Klatt of Waco and Charlene Young and husband, Ted, of Sumter, S.C.; her brother, Jim Underwood and wife, Connie, of Andrews; and six grandchildren, Mike Klatt and his wife, Sha, Suzy K. Arnold and her husband, Henry, Lynn Y. Anthony and her husband, Dan, Rick Young and his wife, Kimberly, Sarah Y. Gessner and her husband, Rick, and Charles Berry Williams II and his wife, Charlotte; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Joel Hardy Williams; a daughter, Mary Janice Williams; a brother, Joe Underwood; and two sisters, Beth Marr and Wilma Wilson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Austin Avenue United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Robbins and the Rev. Robert Cavanaugh officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law, Mike Klatt, Rick Young, Dan Anthony, Henry Arnold, Berry Williams II and Rick Gessner. Born Aug. 7, 1914, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Envenden and Bertha Wilson.
