GLADYS E. JOHNSON

Services for Gladys Elizabeth Johnson will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2000, in Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, the Rev. E. J. Squire, pastor. Burial will be in St. John Methodist Church, directed by Hines Funeral Home. Mrs. Johnson died on Tuesday, May 16. Born in the Lamar community, she was the daughter of the late Alberta Harlee and was raised by the late Washington and Lovie Moore Johnson. She was educated in Darlington County public schools, graduating from Spaulding High School of Lamar, class of 1949. She was married to Robert Lee Boston and this union was blessed with two children. She relocated to New York after high school for several years before moving back to her native Lamar in 1991. She moved to Hartsville where she worked at the Saleeby Rehabilitation Center, Coker College and later the Landmark Inn. Mrs. Johnson was a member of Bethany Baptist Church of Lamar for most of her life and lived next door to the church, which she cared for and maintained the same as she cared for her personal residence. She served her church in many capacities, including that of secretary, treasurer, choir and the Usher Board. After moving to Hartsville, she joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Survivors are a daughter, Robin Jeanette (Ernest) Boston-Dials; a son, Malachai W. (Sandra) Johnson of Plainfield, N.J.; a brother, Woodrow Williams; three grandchildren, Earnethia Dials, Mecenia Dials, both of Hartsville and Carmen Johnson of Plainfield, N.J.; four great-grandchildren and son-in-law, Johnny M. Hughes.

EDNA C. THOMAS

Mrs. Edna Mae Chestnut Thomas, died May 18, 2000, in Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements are to be announced by Hines Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence, 526 Hunter Drive.

GEORGIA WEAVER

Services for Georgia Watt Weaver, 71, will be held 11 a.m. today, May 19, 2000, at Lakeview Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Don Purvis officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennnington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Lakeview Baptist Church. Mrs. Weaver, widow of Troy Ed Weaver, died Wednesday, May 17. Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Claude L. and Sallie R. Watt. She was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church, Oasis, Loving hand Sunday School class and Senior Adult Bible Study. Surviving are her son, Danny (Patti) Weaver of Hartsville; four sisters, Dara Bowie of Ware Shoals, Sylvia Ray of Bishopville, Joan Privette of Columbia and Kay Yonce of West Columbia; and a granddaughter, Kelli Weaver of Hartsville.

LILLIAN GAINEY

Services for Lullian Robbins Gainey, 74, will be held at 4 p.m. today, May 19, 2000 at Cedar Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Homer Hinson, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Cedar Creek Baptist Church Building Fund. Mrs. Gainey died Tuesday, May 16. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late C.C. and Sophia Inez Dixon Robbins. She was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church and was retired as the cafeteria manager at Plainview Elementary School. Surviving are her husband, Wallace Lee Gainey of Hartsville; two sons, Wallace “Skeet” (Rosemary) Gainey of Columbia and Mitchell (Jeanne) Gainey of Hartsville; three daughters and son-in law Cynthia Kelley and Dick Tyner of Hartsville; Sandra Morrison of Hartsville, Candee Gainey of Gastonia, N.C.; five brothers, Cliff Robbins, Jack Robbins, Marion Robbins, James Edward Robbins, and Archie Robbins, all of Hartsville; four sisters, Inez Burch, Sara Alexander, Peggy Evans, Linda Price, all of Hartsville; five grandchildren, Vincent Lee Gainey, Matthew Gainey, Andy Gainey, Mary Gainey and Lee Gainey. She was predeceased by a brother, Robert L. Robbins and a sister, Edna Freeman.

MARY L. THOMAS

Mary L. Thomas of Hartsville, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, in Wilson Medical Center after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the home of her nephew Clarence Muldrow of 1920 Governor Williams Hwy., Darlington.

WOOSTER DAMPIER

Services for Thomas Wooster Dampier, 53, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2000, at Fourth Street Baptist Church with Revs. Kenneth Hood, Jimmy Baker and Steve Zimmerman officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Elon Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends tonight, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home. Memorial may be made to the American Cancer Society, 123 Westover Dr., Hartsville, SC 29550. Mr. Dampier died Monday, May 15. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Ruby Gainey Dampier and the late William Harvey Dampier. He was a member of Fourth Street Baptist Church and was employed with Galey & Lord. Surviving are his wife, Mary McKenzie Dampier of Hartsville; two sons, Tom Dampier of Hartsville and Brad Dampier of Columbia; mother of Hartsville; brother, Howard Dampier and a sister, Persia Dampier, both of Hartsville.

THOMAS PATTERSON

Services for Thomas Patterson will be held at 2 p.m. today, May 17, 2000, in Greater Zion Tabernacle Apostolic Church. Burial will be in St. John United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home. Mr. Patterson was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Junious and Ruby McCullough Patterson. He was educated in the public schools, worked with his family as farmers during his formative years. He was married to May Queen Marshall of Bishopville in 1963 and to this union three children were born. He moved to New York early in life where he established his own business in the freight transportation industry (The Patterson Trucking Company). He moved back to his native South Carolina in the early 80’s and was self employed in several occupations. He was a member of the Greater Zion Tabernacle Apostolic Church in Florence. Survivors are his wife, Mary Patterson of Florence; two sons, Thomas (Marsha) Patterson Jr. of Louisville, Ky., and Maunice T. Patterson of Florence; two daughters, Kimberly (Rock) Paul of Louisville, Ky., and Crystal (Kenneth) Morgan of Suffolk, Va.; five brothers, Freddie (Gloria) Patterson of Bishopville, James (Mannlyn) Patterson of Florence, Henry (Minnie) Patterson, Howard Patterson and Leroy (Martha) Patterson, all of Lamar; three sisters, Deloris (Otis) McDaniels, Corine (Larry) McCullough and Loretta Rogers, all of Lamar; eight aunts, two uncles and seven grandchildren.

LARRY GANDY JR.

Services for Larry Gandy Jr. were held 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2000, in Darlington High School Gymnasium with Rev. Michael McMillian officiating. Burial followed in Round O Church cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home. Mr. Gandy, 16, died Tuesday, May 9, after an automobile accident. He was born in Darlington County and was the son of Larry and Gloria Johnson Gandy Sr. He was a student at Darlington Adult School. Survivors include his parents of the home; three sisters, Jhameka Livanga and Amber Gandy II of Darlington, a special sister, Yolanda Alford of Darlington; maternal grandparents, Roosevelt and Martha Johnson and paternal grandmother, Janie Gandy, all of Darlington; maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Ola Mae Douglas of Florence; a nephew; three aunts, four uncles and several great uncles and aunts. He was predeceased by paternal grandfather, Henry Gandy Jr.

JANIE W. BROWN

Services for Janie Woods Brown were held 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 15, 2000, in Mt. Rona Baptist Church with Rev. Matthew Robinson, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home of Darlington. Mrs. Brown died Tuesday, May 9, in a Darlington hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Berry and Aileen Thompson Woods. She was the widow of John Lee Brown. She received her formal education in Darlington County public schools. She was a life member of Mt. Rona Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, William Brown of Society Hill; two daughters, Alleen Brown of Society Hill and Rosa Mae Allen of Darlington; 12 grandchildren, six of which she reared as her own, Beverly, Leroy, Darel, Dorothy, Barbara and Janice; 18 great-grandchildren, one she reared as her own, Samora; a brother, Perry Woods of Society Hill; son in law, Albert Smith of Waterbury, Conn. and several cousins.

AGNES N. HARGROVE

Graveside services for Agnes Nance Hargrove, 92, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13, 2000, at Westview cemetery, in Atlanta, Ga., directed by Norton Funeral Home. Dr. John Beyers and Rev. James Sanders officiated. Mrs. Hargrove was born in Morgan Falls, Ga., a daughter of the late John W. & Cora Webb Nance. She was a member of Grace Methodist Church, was retired from Emmory University as a secretary to the Chairman of the Biology department. She and her late husband co-chaired the PTA for the state of Georgia. Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie (Ted) Morrison of Charlotte, N.C., and Delores (Harry) Cole of Covington, La; one son, Ben (Susan) Hargrove Jr. of Fruitland Park. Fla.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin T. Hargrove, Sr. Memorials may be made to the Morrell Memorial Convalescent Center, 900 North Marquis Highway, Hartsville, S.C. 29550.

FRANCES BRUNSON

Services for Frances Dixon Brunson, 69, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at John Wesley Methodist Church with Rev. John Smith officiating. Burial was in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown-Penningotn-Atkins Funeral Home. Mrs. Brunson, widow of George Brunson, died Saturday, May 13. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late Bealer and Ann Polson Dixon. She was a member of John Wesley Methodist Church. Surviving are her sons, Denny (Hazel) Brunson, Charles (Gloria) Brunson, all of Hartsville; daughter, Laris Brunson of Lake City, S.C.; brother, Allen Dixon of Texas; sister, Thelma Home of Henderson, Ky. She was predeceased by a brother, Billy Ross and two sisters, Claudie Mitchum and Vera Terry.

RONALD T. POWELL

Services for Ronald “Bubba” T. Powell, 52, of Darlington, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 14, 2000, in the Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home Chapel, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington. Interment followed in Grove Hill cemetery. Mr. Powell died Friday, May 12. He was born in Marion County, a son of the late T. L. and Blanche Powell. He was the owner of Powell Telecommunications and a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Powell was a fan of auto racing and was the sponsor of Trey Hall’s race car. He was happiest when he was working around children. Mr. Powell is survived by his wife, Lisa Cowick Powell; two daughters, Madison Powell of the home and Katie Powell of Hartsville; two sisters, Shirley P. (Nat) Gurerrero of Florence and Gaily P. (Edward) Reason of Britton’s Neck; one niece, Christy Reason of Britton’s Neck; nephews, Scott Reason of Britton’s Neck, Jason Guerrero of Manning, Jamie Gurerrero of Jackson, Miss. and Johnathn Guerrero of Florence; and Zan Rittenberry, best friend and business associate. Memorials may be made to Carolina Bank, P. O. Box 1028, Darlington, S.C. 29540 for the children’s trust fund.

REV. KEVIN JEFFREY

Services for Rev. Kevin Lenard Cox Jeffrey, formerly of Darlington, were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at Macedonia Baptist Church in Darlington with Rev. Donald Hughes, pastor. Burial was in St. John United Methodist Church cemetery in the Oates Community, directed by Hines Funeral Home of Hartsville. Mr. Jeffrey died Friday, May 12, in the Anderson Area Memorial Medical Center, Anderson, S.C. He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., a son of Herbert Cox and Ernestine Jeffrey Cox Daniels. He was raised by his grandparents, Asa and Laura Hines Jeffrey in Darlington. Was a 1977 graduate from Mayo High School, continued his education at Claflin College in Orangeburg, where he majored in religious education and philosophy, was a graduate of Morris College of Sumter. He continued educational pursuits at Erskine Theological Seminary. Rev. Jeffrey, as a pastor of several congregations throughout the state of South Carolina had special skills in preparing programs of Christian Education that related to community development programs for positive human growth and development. He held positions in several churches to include the Orangeburg Circuit of the United Methodist Church, Bethlehem UMC, the St. John UMC and the Mt. Nebo UMC. Also in the Anderson Circuit of the UMC was the Bethlehem UMC, the Mt. Sinai UMC, the Deep Creek UMC and the Mt. Pleasant UMC. He was the immediate past pastor of the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church of the Hartsville Community. Survivors, include his wife, Carolyn Jeffrey, twin sons, Brendan and Braxton Jeffrey and son, Shane Whitner all of Anderson; a son, Aaron Jeffrey and daughter Arleatha Jeffrey, both of Darlington; his mother, Ernestine Daniels and step father, William Avon Daniels of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one sister, Karen LaJuana Jeffrey of Anderson; two grandchildren, a brotherly friend, Rev. Emanuel Simon; a host of aunts, nieces, nephews and other close and dear friends.

JAMES A. THOMAS

Graveside services for James Alton Thomas, Jr., 48, were held Monday, May 15, 2000, at Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Rev. Robert Remaley officiated. Mr. Thomas was born in Darlington County, a son of Easter Coates Thomas and the late James Alton Thomas Sr. Surviving are his mother of Hartsville; one sister, Janice Hughey and one brother, Tommy Thomas, both of Hartsville.

PLUMIE W. MOBLEY

Services for Plumie W. “Tootsie” Mobley, 93, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 14, 2000, at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Bob Cline officiating. Burial was in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church. Mrs. Mobley, widow of Samuel Goode Mobley, died Friday, May 12. Born in Richburg, S.C., she was a daughter of the late John O. and Plumie Ford Wylie. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and was retired from the Department of Social Services. Surviving are her sonand daughter-in-law, Samuel Goode and Gail Mobley Jr. of Hartsville; daughter, Sarah Mobley James of Hartsville; granddaughter, Gennie Hunter Handmaker of Atlanta, Ga.; and one great-grandson, Austin Handmaker.

JAMES MASSEY

Services for James Ralph Massey, 64, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 14, 2000, at Wilkes Chapel Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home of Darlington. Mr. Massey was born in El Dorado, Ark., the son of the late William and Louise Hudson Massey. He was a construction worker by trade. Surviving are two daughters, Stephanie Ann Massey of Asheville, N.C., and Brandy M. Winn of Hartsville; three sons, James Ralph Massey Jr. and Theo Dwanye Massey, both of Arkansas and Ralph Stanley of Tennessee; and one sister, Patsy Ruth M. Cabaniss of St. Louis, Mo.

GIRLENA KIMBRELL

Services for Girlena B. Kimbrell, 71, of Matthews, will be held at 2 p.m. today, May 12, 2000, at Matthews United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steven Combs, officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens, by McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel. Mrs. Kimbrell was born Dec. 5, 1928, in Darlington County, to the late Wade Benjamin and Fronie Moore Blackwell. She retired from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system after 23 years in food service and was a longtime member of Matthews United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Archie Kimbrell Jr.; grandson, Daniel Kimbrell and also two sisters and one brother. Survivors include six sons, William Archie (Wanda) Kimbrell III of Hartsville, Eddie Wade (Terry) Kimbrell of New Salem, N.C., Mike Kimbrell and Joey Bundy of Sanford, N.C., Ricky (Andrea) Kimbrell of Waxhaw, Jerry Kimbrell of Weddington and Todd Kimbrell of Matthews; four daughters, Joyce K. (Gary) Russell of Stanfield, Dianne K. (Ray) Helms of Indian Trail, Susie K. (Steve) Outen of Weddington and Sherri K. (Mike) Sanders of Indian Trail; 20 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-laws, Dot Hartis and Betty Keziah.
