WARD GAINEY

Services for Ward Bennett Gainey, 71, will be held at 2 p.m. today, May 12, 2000, at Swift Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Bill Pfister will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorial may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2711 Middleburg, Dr., Suite 311, Columbia, S.C. 29204. Mr. Gainey died Tuesday, May 9. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Avender M. and Lillie Polk Gainey. He was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. with 43 years of service and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He also was retired from the SC National Guard and was past-president and chairperson of the Pee Dee District of WPCASC. A father to many but mainly a leader to a son, Brantley, that will never forget the love he gave. Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Betty Bradshaw Gainey of Hartsville; three sons, Bryan Gainey of Charleston, Brantley Gainey of Hartsville and Kevin Gainey of Macon, Ga.; a daughter, Tonda McLeod of McBee; a step-son, Bucky O’Neal of Olathe, Kan.; step-daughter, Beth Boone of Society Hill; a brother, Howard Gainey of Hartsville and nine grandchildren.

RICHARD SOULE, JR.

Graveside services for Richard Dale Soule Jr., 50, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 11, 2000, in Westview Memorial Park cemetery with Rev. Ed Griggs officiating, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mr. Soule died Sunday, May 7.Born in Augusta, Ga., he was a son of Freddie Catoe Soule and the late Richard Dale Soule Sr. He attended Richmond Academy and Augusta State University. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. Surviving are his mother of Martinez, Ga.; a sister and brother-in-law Lisa Soule and John Ramey of Bonneau, and a brother, Roy Scott Soule of Martinez.

EVELYN HARRELL

Services for Evelyn Galloway Harrell, 81, were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 11, 2000, at North Hartsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Ladell Humphries, the Rev. Dr. Richard Bailey and the Rev. Bryan Chapman, officiating. Burial was in Darlington Memory Gardens cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mrs. Harrell, widow of James Edgar Harrell, died Tuesday, May 9. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Russell Z. and Annie Suggs Galloway. She was a member of North Hartsville Baptist Church and the Willing Workers Sunday School class and was a Sunday School teacher for the shut-in. Surviving are her three sons, James E. (Faye) Harrell Jr. and Mike (Renee) Smith, both of Hartsville and Ronnie Earl Smith of W. Palm Beach, Fla.; four daughters, Barbara Weatherford, Betty (Ernest) Byrd and Brenda H. (Buford) Chapman, all of Hartsville, and Ann (Johnny) Andrews of Darlington; 18 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by three grandchildren, Robert, Beth and Wanda Byrd.

PLUMMER E. STEVENS

Services for Plummer E. Stevens, 81, of Bishopville, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 13, 2000, at Harmony Baptist Church in Bethune, with the Rev. Carl Watts Jr., officiating. Burial will be in Hardshell cemetery in Lugoff, directed by Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. tonight, May 12, at the funeral home and other times at 2684 Stephens Road, Bethune. Mr. Stevens died Wednesday, May 10, at a local nursing home. Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late A. L.”Link” Stephens and the late Irene Melton Stephens. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and a retired farmer. He was twice married , first to the late Marguerite M. Stephens and later to the late Nina Stephens. Survivors include two sons, Fred Stephens and Charlie Stpehens, both of Bethune; two daughters, Barbara Currie of Camden and Libby Catoe of Bethune; two step-daughters, Emily Akers of Lugoff and Alice Hall of Bishopville; three sisters, Lucille Clanton and Mary B. Smith, both of Mint Hill, N.C. and Mollie Byrd of Hartsville; 22 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sons, Billy Stephens, Glenn Stephens and Johnny M. Stephens. Memorials may be made to Harmony Baptist Church or to the Bishopville Rescue Squad.

EULA MAE PARNELL

Services for Eula Mae Conyers Parnell, 79, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2000, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Carolyn Malphus and John Hamilton will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Parnell died on Wednesday, May 3, 2000. Born in Turbeville, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Charles Leroy and Lizzie Turbeville Conyers. She was a member of Twitty United Methodist Church and was retired from Sara Lee Hosiery. Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Gene Munn and Mary and Billy Gainey, all of Hartsville; sister, Gladys Bellamy of Flint, Mich.; step-mother, Julia Warren of Sumter; half-brothers, Leroy Conyers, Tom Conyers and Frankie Conyers, all of Sumter; Eugene Conyers of Manning; grandchildren, Wayne Newsome, Kim O’Neal and Leigh Summers; and four great-grandchildren.

HARRY CLANTON

Graveside services for Harry W. Clanton, 74, were held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, 2000, in Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Bill Curtis officiated, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the McLeod Foundation Cancer Treatment, 800 E. Cheves St., Florence, S.C. 29501. Mr. Clanton died on Wednesday, May 3, 2000. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Raeford Lee and Fannie Lee Clanton. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the S.C. Merchants Association. He was retired from Coker’s Department Stores and Palmetto Uniform and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Surviving are his wife, Margie Grantham Clanton of Florence; sons and daughters-in-law, Harry and Laurie Clanton of Irmo, S.C., and Gregg and Anna Clanton of Galena, Md.; brothers, R.L. Clanton Jr. of Hartsville, and Cecil Clanton of Bishopville; sister, Del Pinner of Hartsville; grandchildren, William Clanton, Julia Clanton and Nicole Clanton. He was predeceased by a brother, Lee Clanton.

THOMAS HUGGINS SR.

Thomas Eugene Huggins Sr., 50, died on Sunday, April 30, 2000. There will not be a funeral. Mr. Huggins was born in Darlington County, a son of the late John Henry Huggins Sr. and Louise Barefoot Huggins. He was a retired truck driver. Surviving are two sons, Thomas E. Huggins Jr. and John E. Huggins, both of Hartsville; two sisters, Helen Kelly and Dorothy Fletcher, both of Hartsville; and two grandchildren.

CARRIE LEE B. BLUE

Carrie Lee Blue of Hartsville, died on Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at the residence after an illness. Arrangements to be announced by Hines Funeral Home of Hartsville. Family will receive friends at the residence.

JOHN D. KNOX

John D. Knox, 66, of Hartsville died on Wednesday, May 3, 2000 at his home after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

FRANCIS P. BYRD

Services for Francis P. Byrd, 80, of Society Hill, were held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Mr. Byrd died early Sunday morning, April 30, at his home near Society Hill after a long struggle with emphysema. He was born Aug. 10, 1919 and was a tobacco farmer near the Patrick-Society Hill area. was married to Hazel Deyo Culpepper on Dec. 12, 1942, and she survives him. In the community he served on the Harris Creek School Board, the Chesterfield County ASC County Committee and the Chesterfield County Farm Bureau Board of Directors. A lifelong member of Mt. Olviet Baptist Church, he served on the Board of Deacons, as superintendent of Sunday School and on numerous committees over the years. Mr. Byrd was preceded in death by his parents, George Lucas Byrd and Mary Musgrove (Mamie) Farr; brothers, Lucas Etheride (Geneva Clark, William Oatzel (Elizabeth Winburn) and Harvey Hoke (Lola Mae Dixon); and sister, Helen Wynoon; three sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephew survive him; and a daughter, Sandra Merle Byrd, 16, died in 1963, of complications due to cerebral palsy. Survivors are seven children, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; Vivan A. Byrd, 56, and special friend, Darrell Chambers of Ann Arbor, MI and her children, Jonathan D. Schwartz, of Orlando Fla. and Michael (wife, Puri-Yu) Schwartz of Chicago, Ill; Francis Stanley Byrd, 54, and special friend, Mardy Jackson of Society Hill; his son, Matthew Stanley Byrd of Columbia; Lee Odell Byrd, 53, wife, Annette Snipes Byrd of Florence and their children, Crystel Leigh of Florence and Christopher Lee (wife, Elizabeth, sons, Brandon and Jonah) of Surfside Beach; Sharon Byrd Laureti, 47, of Shelton, Conn. and her children, David Bradley and Jessica Margaret of New York, N.Y.; Katen Byrd Mitchell, 47, husband David Mitchell and their son, Brian Mitchell of Morton, Pa.; Orinda J. Christoph, 45, husband, Richard Thomas Christoph and their children, George Andrew and Erica McKay, of Madison, South Dakota.

CECIL SPIRES

Graveside services for Cecil F. Spires, 79, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 28, 2000, from Magnolia cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home with Rev. John Hamilton officiating. Mr. Spires was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Jessie & Dessie Windham Spires. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company after 42 years of service, member of the Old Timers Club, Emmanuel Baptist Church, The Living Hope Sunday School Class and a veteran of WWII. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Margaret Jones Spires of Hartsville; two sons, William Eugene (Billy) Spires of Hartsville and Lester Lee Spires of McBee; one brother, Heyward Spires of Sumter; three sisters, Mrs. Lynn Newsome, Mrs. Evelyn Talbert and Mrs. Billie Hemingway, all of Hartsville; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Bobby Jean Vines. Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church Building Fund.

ETHEL CAMPBELL

Services for Ethel Bulls Campbell, 90, were held at 3 p. m. Tuesday, May 2, 2000, in Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mrs. Campbell died Thursday, April 27, in Carolina Pines Medical Center after an illness. She was born Sept. 22, 1909 in Darlington County, was the daughter of the late Early and Theo Williams Bulls. She was educated in Darlington County public school and was a member of Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church, the Senior Choir, Missionary Society and the Mother Board. Surviving are three daughters, Susie (Eddie) Thompson, Ethelene Edward and Christine Dickson, all of Hartsville; three sons, Willie James Campbell and Bobby (Barbara) Campbell, both of Hartsville and Dr. Guy (Dorothy) Campbell, Jr. of Moorestown, N.J.; three sisters, Lucille Myers of Hartsville, Sadie Marcus of Williamston, N.C. and Annie McFadden of Willington, N.C.; a brother, Jack (Lillie Mae) Lunn of Darlington; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren.

WILLIE MAE HUGGINS

Services for Willie Mae Grant Huggins, 56, were held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 29, 2000, at St. Luke United Methodist Church. The Revs. Ben and Dora Gafford officiated with burial in Magnolia cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church. Mrs. Huggins died Thursday, April 27. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late Willie Beasley and Ruth Crowley Grant. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and attended St. Luke United Methodist Church. She was a teacher at Washington Street Elementary and West Hartsville Elementary Schools. She received her B.A. from Coker College and her M. Ed from the University of South Carolina. Surviving are her husband, Kenneth Huggins of Hartsville; a son, Tony Huggins of Charleston; daughter, Maria (Tom) McTighe of Mt. Pleasant; a brother, William Grant of Hartsville; sisters, Gloria Bulmer of Newport News, Va., Patty Holley of Hartsville; granddaughters, Cecila Mae McTighe, Ruthie Mary McTighe and Clare Aurelia McTighe.

HERMAN DIXON

Services for Herman Dixon, 68, of Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, formerly of Hartsville, were held at St. James AME Church, New York and Arctic Avenues, Atlantic City, N.J. on April 28, 2000. He was the son of the late Miss Ruby Robinson and Mr. Nathan Dixon and a former employee at Sonoco. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army on Oct. 19, 1954, receiving the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars. Surviving are his wife Hannah Dixon, formerly of Darlington, son, Vernard (Mary) Dixon, of Hartsville; a daughter, the late Mrs. Janie Mae (Sam) Dickson. One surviving sister, Ethel Mitchell of Hartsville; a deceased sister and brother; three grandsons and one grand-daughter; six great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and other close relatives and friends. Memorials may be made to the National Black Coalition of Federal Employees Scholarship Fund, K. Hitchens, FAA Technical Center, N.J., 08405; or to Zonta Club Scholarship, P. Saunders, 9 E. Faunce Landing Rd., Absecon, NJ 08201. Arrangements were the direction of Jewell Funeral Home, 705 Arctic Avenue, Atlantic City, N.J. 08401, (609) 345-2622.

D. HAROLD GULLEDGE

Services for D. Harold Gulledge, 59, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Brown-Pennington-Akins Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Bill Stanley officiated with burial in Hebron United Methodist Church cemetery, Chesterfield County. Mr. Gulledge died Saturday, April 29. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late William David and Nancy Elizabeth Lear Gulledge. He was an employee of Jessie Easterling Dairy. Surviving are his wife, Peggy Johnson Gulledge of Hartsville; son, Walter Gulledge of Stateville, Ga.; one daughter, Jeanette Shankle of Kannapolis, N.C.; one brother, Gary Gulledge of El Paso, Texas; four sisters, Bernice Mills, Faye Hancock and Ether Wallace, all of Kannapolis, N.C. and Margaret Clay of Mooresville, N.C.; and a grandchild.

HAZEL C. KING

Services for Hazel Clark King, 83, were held 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the Kinlaw Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike Elliott officiating. Private graveside services were held in Magnolia cemetery in Hartsville. Mrs. King died Sunday, April 30, at Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlisle Richard King, Sr. Survivors include two daughters, Gwendolyn Howle of Concord, N.C.; Judith Manning of Liberty, N.C.; one son, Carlisle Richard King Jr. of Warrenton, VA and four grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, Post Office Box 336, Elizabethtown, N.C.

EUGENE HELMS

Services for Eugene C. Helms, 85, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 4, 2000, at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Bob Cline and Dr. Clarence Elmore officiating. Burial will be in New Providence cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church. Mr. Helms died Tuesday, May 2. Born in Union County, he was a son of the late Raymond Creighton and Cora Elizabeth Helms Helms. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Adult Senior choir, Fellowship Sunday School class, and a worker in the Junior Department. He was also a past deacon at New Providence Baptist Church, manager of Sumter Dairy for 16 years and active in Boy Scouts. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Easterling Helms; son, Charles E. Helms, both of Hartsville; a daughter, Mrs. Betty (Wesley) Haynes of Greenwood; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a step-mother, Louise Harrison Helms.
