James R. ’Gap’ Gadson -- BRANCHVILLE

James R. “Gap” Gadson, of 210 Stokes Court, Branchville, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2006, at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg following a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be announced by Owens Funeral Home of Branchville.

Friends may call at the residence and at the funeral home.

Winston Hill, SANTEE

Funeral services for Mr. James Winston Hill, 85, of Santee Cooper Resort, Santee, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006, at Summerton Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Garland Hart and the Rev. Karen Starr officiating. Burial will at 2:30 p.m. in Mount Hope Cemetery in Florence.

Pallbearers will be Pete Garrett, Frank Bellamy, Allen Hill Jr., Tommy Taylor, Bob McCurry Jr., and Hugh Belser III.

Mr. Hill died Sunday, Dec. 10, in Raleigh, N.C.

He was born in Timmonsville, a son of the late Ivy Hill and Minnie Critcher Hill. An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he retired as supervisor of the USDA Southeastern Tobacco Division, and manager of Bright Belt Warehouse in Raleigh, N.C. Mr. Hill was a member of the Summerton Presbyterian Church where he was a former elder and Sunday School teacher. He was first married to Mary Commander Hill, and was later married to the late Frances Lockett Hill.

Surviving are his wife, Lucia Whetsell Shuler Hill of Santee; a daughter, Carol McCullen of Apex, N.C.; stepdaughters, Lucy L. Garrett of Nashville, Tenn., Faith S. McCurry of Orangeburg, and Melanie S. McKelvey of Charlotte; stepsons, Pete Garrett of Austin, Texas and Carl Shuler of Houston, Texas; a brother, Allen H. Hill of Myrtle Beach; granddaughters, Leslie and Lauren McCullen of Apex, N.C.; and eight step-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this Tuesday at Avinger Funeral Home in Holly Hill.

Memorials may be made to Summerton Presbyterian Church, 16 S. Cantey St., Summerton, SC 29148.

Mrs. Sarah Corley Butts, ORANGEBURG

Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Corley Butts, 92, of 1443 Essex Drive, Orangeburg, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, December 11, 2006, at Bull Swamp Baptist Church in Orangeburg, with the Rev. J.J. Glover, pastor, and the Rev. Leroy Cain officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The casket will be placed in the church at noon.

Active pallbearers will be nephews.

Mrs. Butts died Wednesday, December 6, at her residence following a brief illness.

She was born May 8, 1914, in Orangeburg, a daughter of the late William Corley and Fannie Randolph Corley. At an early age, she joined Bull Swamp Baptist Church, where she served faithfully. She moved to Washington, D.C., where she joined Southern Baptist Church in the early 1940s. She served as Deaconess until she returned home to Orangeburg and reunited with Bull Swamp Baptist Church in May 2006. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Butts; one son, Ronald Dave (Pete) Corley; four brothers and seven sisters.

She leaves to cherish fond and loving memories, daughters, Doris (Robert) Qualls of Orangeburg, Willie Mae Matthew and Drucilla Henderson, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; sons, Robert L. Butts of Orangeburg, Frank Hicks and James Butts, both of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Nettie Weaver of Washington, D.C.; special nieces, Blanche Shuler, Cynthia (Tete) Gardner, Sabrina Muhammad and Mary Lawrence, all of Washington, D.C.; grandchildren, Brenda Cauley Hosto, Florence Cauley Teague, Gail Cauley Chase, Robert Cauley, Roberto Anderson, Nolan King, Robert Butts III and Renardo Johnson; 20 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Friends may call at the residence and at Glover's Funeral Home of Orangeburg.

Flossie H. Dill, ORANGEBURG

Flossie Hutto Dill, 84, of 1000 Methodist Oaks Drive, Orangeburg, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2006, at The Methodist Oaks.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, in Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Dill was born in Norway, a daughter of the late Lewis G. and Nancy Bizzell Hutto. She was a retired beautician and owned and operated her own shop for many years in Norway. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the widow of Willard J. Dill.

Survivors include two sons, David A. Dill and wife, Gail, of Lenoir City, Tenn., and Jimmy A. Dill and wife, Vickie, of Woodruff; a brother, Ligon Hutto of Bamberg; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth H. Davis of Cope; two grandsons, Brian Dill of Johnson City, Tenn., and Jared Dill of Spartanburg; and a great-granddaughter, Abbigail Dill.

Memorials may be made to Eden Alternative, c/o The Methodist Oaks, PO Drawer 27, Orangeburg, SC 29116.

Dukes-Harley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William 'Son' Keitt Jr.

Funeral services for William "Son" Keitt Jr., 77, of 500 Indian Road, Bowman, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 24, 2007, at Andrew Chapel Baptist Church, with the Rev. D. E. Greene Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The casket will be placed in the church at 9 a.m.

Mr. Keitt died Sunday, August 19, at his residence.

He was born November 26, 1929, in Orangeburg, a son of the late Jacob Keitt and Katie Hanton Keitt Williams. He attended East Mill and Elloree High School. At an early age, he joined Andrew Chapel Baptist Church. He was self-employed farmer. Mr. Keitt was married to the former Ruby M. Houser and to this union, 10 children were born.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Ruby Keitt of the home; five daughters, Susie Bookard, Shirley (Melvin) Simmon, Sandra Holman, Emma Lucas, all of Bowman, Janet (Willie) Aiken of Cameron; five sons, William (Rosa) Keitt, Bookard Tee Keitt, Jerry (Celia) Keitt, Anthony (Shirley) Keitt, all of Bowman and Bernard (Bertha) Keitt of Cameron; three brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law, 22 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Friends may call at the residence and at Bythewood Funeral Home of Orangeburg.
