James ‘Andy’ Wardlaw
ABBEVILLE — James A. “Andy” Wardlaw, 48, of 602 Poplar St., died Friday, April 19, 2002, at his home.
A son of Janie Fuller Wardlaw and the late Charlie W. Wardlaw Sr., he was a member of St. James A.M.E. Church. He graduated from Abbeville High School in 1972 and from Forrest College and was a notary.
Survivors include his mother of the home; a brother, Vernon Dennis of Abbeville; and two sisters, Donna W. Reese of Lancaster and Kimberly Wardlaw of Columbia.
Services are 3 p.m. Sunday at St. James A.M.E. Church, conducted by the Rev. James E. Tompson. The body will be placed in the church at 2. Burial is in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers are Abbeville High School Class of 1972 members.
Flower bearers are Missionary Society and Abbeville High School Class of 1972 members.
The family is at the home.

Maurice ‘Coot’ Watson
BRADLEY — Services for Maurice “Coot” Watson, formerly of 403 Rambo Drive, will be at 2 Monday at Robinson & Son Mortuary, conducted by the Rev. Paul Jennings, assisted by the Revs. Ben Fleming and Mattie Mae Hardy. Burial is in Old Field Bethel A.M.E. Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers are grandsons and nephews.
Flower bearers are granddaughters and nieces.
Visitation is Sunday at the home of a son, Charlie Gilliam, 113 Cottonwood St., Greenwood.
Robinson & Son Mortuary Inc., Greenwood, is in charge.

Zellie Marie Wideman
GREENWOOD — Zellie Marie Wideman, 64, of 7413 McCormick Highway, widow of Nathaniel Pete Wideman Sr., died Friday, April 19, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Sam and Alma Reid Cheeks. She was a retired employee of Greenwood Mills and a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Survivors include three sons, Barry Wideman of Greenwood, James Wideman and Nathaniel Wideman, both of Troy; a daughter, Ella Griffin of Elizabeth, N.J.; a brother, Samuel Cheeks of Fort Worth, Texas ; a sister, Patricia Cheeks Lyons of Augusta, Ga.; seven grandchildren.
The family is at the home of a son, Barry Wideman, 110 Joanna Lane, Greenwood.
Services will be announced by Robinson & Son Mortuary Inc.

Angel Melessa Hughes
WARE SHOALS — Angel Melessa Mullinax Hughes, 27, of 13 Wood St., died Friday, April 19, 2002.
Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of Mickeal and Peggy James Varnum. She was a Cosmetologist, employed by Cost Cutters of Anderson. She attended the Church of God.
Survivors include her parents; a son, Miki Hughes of the home; her fiancé, Adam Vinson of the home; four brothers, Wayne Varnum, Ricki Reece, Buddy Kay and Pete Kay, all of Ware Shoals; two sisters, Jamie Galloway of Honea Path and Renee Demerest of Ware Shoals and maternal grandmother, Mildred James of Ware Shoals.
Graveside services are at 2 Monday at Ware Shoals Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. John Phillips.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Parker-White Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.

Tykeia and Tyrell Jackson
ABBEVILLE — Tykeia Jackson and Tyrell Jackson, infant twins of Alisha Jackson, died Friday, April 19, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Survivors include a grandmother, Mozelle Jackson.
Committal services are at noon today at Harbison Cemetery.
The family is at the home, 71 Carwellyn Road, Apt. 2-D.

Otis ‘Preacher’ Sutton
ABBEVILLE — Otis “Preacher” Sutton, 88, of Woodview Apt. 41, widower of Mary Marshall Sutton, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Born in McCormick County, he was a son of the late Walter and Airy Hunter Sutton. He was a retired employee of the City of Abbeville. He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Services are at 2 Tuesday at Brown and Walker Funeral Home. Burial is in Harbison Cemetery.
The family is at the home of his nieces, Linda Sutton and Nancy S. Brown, 420 Vienna St.

Carlos R. Talbert Jr.
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Carlos R. Talbert Jr. died Friday, April 19, 2002, in Asheville, N.C.
Born in Asheville, he was a son of Carlos and Nanessa Talbert Sr.
Survivors include his parents of Asheville; a sister, Kristen Brisco of Asheville; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs Johnny Tolbert of Plum Branch; paternal grandmother, Drucilla Hill of Plum Branch; great-grandmother, Louvenia Prince of McCormick and paternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Talbert of Plum Branch.
Services are at noon Monday at the Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Plum Branch, conducted by the Rev. W.H. McCain and the Rev. Otis Cunningham. Burial is in the church cemetery.
The family is at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Tolbert, Plum Branch.
Walker Funeral Home, McCormick, is in charge.

Zellie Wideman
GREENWOOD — Services for Zellie Wideman, of 7413 McCormick Highway, are at 1 Monday at the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, conducted by Brother Larry Hackett.
The family is at the home of a son, Barry Wideman, 110 Joanna Lane.

Augustus D. Abercrombie
GREENWOOD — Augustus D. Abercrombie, 97, of 144 Rutledge Road, widower of Annie B. Abercrombie, died Sunday, April 21, 2002.
Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Ethel Comes
McCORMICK — Ethel Suehomel Comes, 89, of 211 Lee Circle, Savannah Lakes Village, widow of Leo J. Comes, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Marion, Iowa, she was a daughter of the late Ted and Geda Suehomel. She was a homemaker and member of the Lutheran Church By The Lake.
Survivors include a son, Phil Comes of McCormick.
Services and burial are Friday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The family is at the home of her son, Phil Comes, 211 Lee Circle, Savannah Lakes Village.

Bertha Lewis Davenport
GREENWOOD — Bertha Lewis Davenport, 84, of 109 Biscayne Drive, died Sunday, April 21, 2002.
The family is at the home of her daughters, Mrs. Lafayette (Easter) Harrison, 109 Biscayne Drive and Mrs. Willie (Bobbie Jean) Spearman, 408 Wade St.
Robinson & Son Mortuary Inc. is in charge.

Ben Haskin
GREENWOOD — William Benjamin “Ben” Haskin, 63, resident of 220 West Forest Drive, husband of Emilie Foster Haskin, died April 21, 2002 at Self Regional Health Care Center.
Born in Ninety Six, December 18, 1938, he was the son of the late William McKinley and Bernice Stewart Haskin. A graduate of Ninety Six High School, he attended Presbyterian College and the University of Georgia.
Mr. Haskin served in the US Air Force. For over thirty years, he was in the lumber business. He owned and operated W.B. Haskin Lumber Company; later, he operated Haskin Logging.
A past president of the Georgia-Carolina Lumberman Association, Mr. Haskin also served on the board of directors of the Southeastern Lumberman Manufacturing Association and the Appalachian Lumberman Association. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Brian Bell of Florence, a son and daughter-in-law, William Benjamin “Bill” and Elizabeth Haskin of Sullivan’s Island. Three grandchildren, Greyson McKinley Bell, Cheryl Layton Bell and William Benjamin “Ben” Haskin, III.
A celebration of his life will be 2 PM Tuesday at the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with his nephew Rev. A. Joseph Broody, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Stewart Haskin, Dr. Wesley Teal, Sammy Rhodes, Stephen Berry, Ellis Timmerman, Irvin Hurt, Dr. Bobby McBride and Charles “Bub” Bell.
The family is at the home on Forest Drive and will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 Monday evening.
The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 6604, Columbia, SC 29260-6604 or to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 1741, Greenwood, SC 29648.

George Meredith
GREENWOOD — George Daniel Meredith, 81, resident of 222 Sample Road, husband of Cora Lee Holcombe Meredith died April 21, 2002 at the Self Regional Health Care Center.
Born in Hart County, Georgia, March 15, 1921, he was the son of the late Francis Marion and Mamie Broome Meredith. He retired from Grendal Mills and was former co-owner and operator of Big M Fence Company.
Mr. Meredith was a member of Laurel Baptist Church and the Louie Lyle Sunday School Class of the Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are three sons and daughters-in-laws, Layne and Carman Meredith, Larry and Gloria Meredith and Mike and Karen Meredith, all of Greenwood, a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and James Rushton of Greenwood. Two sisters, Stella Twitty and Louise Whitfield both of Greenwood. Eleven grandchildren, Sandy Meredith, Michele Meredith Bass, Michael Meredith, Danny Meredith, Larry Meredith, Kathy Rushton Eklund, Jeff Meredith, Jennifer Meredith McElrath, Kristy Rushton Reagan, Kerry Rushton Hodges and Nicholas “Nick” Meredith. Fourteen great-grandchildren, Morgan Hodges, Koby Eklund, Brooke Meredith, Meredith Bass, Will Meredith, Tanner Eklund, Kenley Reagan, Hayden Bass, Jonathan Meredith, Buchan McElrath, Madison Hodges, Emma Grace Bass, Kyler Reagan and Brianne Eklund.
Mr. Meredith was pre-deceased by a daughter-in-law, Jimmie Nell Meredith, three brothers, James Meredith, John Meredith and Bill Meredith. Three sisters, Essie Elliot, Ada Adams and Mary Price.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Tuesday from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Todd Johnson, Rev. Billy Huff and Rev. Joseph Ouzts officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Michael Meredith, Larry Meredith, Jeff Meredith, Danny Meredith, Shane McElrath, Greg Eklund, Tim Reagan, Chris Hodges and Sabin Bass.
Honorary escort will be Alvin “Peanut” Green, Effie and Orville Brookshire, Kat McCrickard, Lillie Mae Hawkins, Carrol Brown, Henry Brown, Dr. John Holman, John “Tree” Akers and members of the Louie Lyle Sunday School Class.
The family is at the home on Sample Road and will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 till 9 Monday evening.
The family request flowers be omitted and memorials made to the Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 West Alexander Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646.

Gus Abercrombie
GREENWOOD - Augustus Dial "Gus" Abercrombie, 97, resident of 144 Rutledge Road, widower of Annie Black Williams Abercrombie, died April 21, 2002 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Hickory Tavern, October 19, 1904, he was a son of the late John C. and Ella Hellams Abercrombie. He was a graduate of Presbyterian College and was a 2nd Lt. in the US Army ROTC Program at Presbyterian College. Mr. Abercrombie was a teacher, principal and superintendent at Mountville School and later was the owner of Greenwood Finance Company.
A member and former Deacon of First Presbyterian Church, he was also a former member of the Greenwood Kiwanis Club.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Normie B. and Woody Halverson of McCormick; three grandsons, Jerome D. Truhn, Jr., Cameron P. Truhn and Augustus D. Truhn.
Mr. Abercrombie was the last member of his immediate family and was one of twelve children.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 AM Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. John Wall and Dr. John Livingston officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Jerome Truhn, Augustus Truhn, Cameron Truhn, Frank Boland, David Newton and Richard Thomason.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 10 AM Wednesday.
The family is at the home of his daughter, Normie Halverson, 141 Tara Drive, Savannah Lakes in McCormick and will receive friends at the graveside immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 108 E. Cambridge Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646 or the charity of one's choice.
