Colleen "Coke" J. Skonberg

Britton -- The funeral for Colleen "Coke" J. Skonberg, 69, of Britton will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Britton. The Rev. Dan Winder will officiate.

Burial will be in the Britton cemetery under the direction of Price Funeral Chapel, Britton.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at the funeral chapel and for one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.

She died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Wheatcrest Hills in Britton.

Colleen J. Winder was born Nov. 16, 1930, to Merrick Lee and Estella (Hildreth) Winder at Newark. She grew up and attended school in Newark. In 1942, the family moved to Britton, where she continued her education, graduating from Britton High School in 1948. After completing her education, she worked for a few years at the Dutch Maid Bakery in Britton.

She married Donald Joseph Skonberg on June 19, 1950, at Webster. They made their home in Britton. She worked for her brother, Jack Winder, at the Dakin's Pharmacy for a few years. Later he went into partnership with Ray Price at Bonham's Jack and Jill, and she worked for a period of time as a cashier. He died Aug. 12, 1983, and she continued to make her home in Britton. She entered the Marshall Manor (now Wheatcrest Hills) in February 1994, and had been a resident since that time.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Newark Royal Neighbors, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary of Britton.

She was a bell collector and had many different kinds and sizes of bells.

Survivors include one son, Glenn Skonberg of Britton; one daughter, Debra Skonberg of Britton; two sisters, Virginia Bergman of Britton and Meryl Bergman of Eden Prairie, Minn.; and two brothers, Bob Winder of Eden Prairie and Roy Winder of Britton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Casketbearers will be Butch Miller, Dennis Bergman, Dick Bergman, Melvin Bergman, Mike Winder and Lauren Freiss.

George Thomas "Tom" Gabbert

Mobridge -- The funeral for George Thomas ÒTomÓ Gabbert, 79, of Mobridge will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Spencer Memorial Presbyterian Church in Lemmon. The Rev. Bill Livingston and the Rev. Ethel Livingston will officiate.

Burial with military honors will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Galloway cemetery at Meadow. Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home of Lemmon is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.

He died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at the Mobridge Regional Hospital following a battle with cancer.

George Thomas Gabbert was born Feb. 23, 1921, to George W. and Florence (Freeman) Gabbert on the family farm three miles west and south of Meadow. He attended Meadow Central Grade School and graduated from the South Dakota Agricultural High School Program in Brookings. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. He was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Honolulu, where he worked as an aircraft mechanic. Following the war he returned to the family farm.

He married Evelyn Hartman on Sept. 21, 1946, at Bison. They farmed and ranched on his parentsÕ homestead. They moved to Hobbs, N.M., in 1965, where they operated the A-Z Rental Center and then opened a machine shop. They returned to South Dakota in 1971 and resumed farming. He also taught the metals unit for Northwest Area Schools for three years. In 1976 he opened West River Machine at Meadow in a partnership with his son-in-law. They remained on the farm until retiring and moving to Mobridge in 1984.

He was an avid gardener, fisherman and cook. He was known for his wit at family gatherings and senior citizens' events.

Survivors include his wife of Mobridge; one daughter, Dorothy "Dottie" (Don) Borowski of Meadow; three sons, John "Jack" (Mary) Gabbert of Meadow, James "Jim" Gabbert of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and Mark (Penny) Gabbert of Aurora, Colo.; one sister, Dale Heide of Portland, Ore.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and four sisters.

Casketbearers will be Donald Wilken, Art Christman, Roy Hulm, Gerald Morris, Vern Schneider and George Aberle.

Alice Kulesa

Webster -- Mass of Christian burial for Alice Kulesa, 80, of Webster will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Christ the King Catholic Church in Webster. The Rev. John Garvey will officiate.

Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic cemetery at Grenville with Mohs Funeral Home of Webster in charge of arrangements.

There will be a liturgical wake service at 7:30 tonight at the church, followed by a Catholic Daughters rosary.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. There will also be visitation from 6:30 tonight to the time of the Mass Saturday at the church.

She died Monday, June 5, 2000, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.

Alice Skiba was born Oct. 13, 1919, to Michael and Catherine (Bociek) Skiba, at Pawtucket, R.I. She moved to South Dakota when she was 7 years old and lived on a farm homesteaded originally by Pete Skiba.

She married Edward Kulesa on June 2, 1936, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Grenville. She lived on the same farm until the fall of 1990, when she moved into Webster. He died in July 1984.

She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, the church altar society and the Catholic Daughters of America, where she was named Catholic Daughter of the Year. She belonged to the Research Group, volunteered in the nursing home and was a member of the Golden Age. She was known as a servant in many capacities to many people.

Survivors include five daughters, Louise Grajczyk and Diane (Noel) Johnson, both of Aberdeen, Yvonne (Larry) Roth of Ham Lake, Minn., Marilyn (Roger) Madison of Elma, Wash., and Tina (Loren) Becht of Streamwood, Ill.; three sons, Edward (Denise) Kulesa of Andover, Minn., Terry (Lori) Kulesa of Grenville and Michael Kulesa of Foreston, Minn.; 24 grandchildren; and 40 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother and one great-grandchild.

Casketbearers will be Doug Grajczyk, Greg Grajczyk, Tim Johnson, Tom Johnson, Adam Kulesa and Duane Snaza.

Robert Wanous

Groton -- Mass of Christian burial for Robert Wanous, 83, of Groton will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Groton. The Rev. David Janes will officiate.

Burial will be in Britton cemetery with Paetznick-Gnarness Funeral Chapel of Groton in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, all at the funeral home, and for one hour prior to the Mass Monday at the church.

He died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.

Robert Wanous was born Oct. 11, 1916, to Henry and Anna (Hartl) Wanous in Blooming Prairie, Minn. He attended school at Pleasant Valley No. 2 school in Marshall County.

He married Menota Denson on Nov. 25, 1936, in Kidder. They farmed in the Kidder area for many years. Upon selling the family farm, they moved to Claremont, where he was employed at the Claremont School. Following his wife's death on July 18, 1968, he moved to Groton. He worked on the Jerry Johnson farm until ill health forced his retirement.

He enjoyed his work on the farm.

Survivors include two sons, Rob (Jeanne) Wanous of Groton, and Larry (Gayle) Wanous of Sisseton; three daughters, Jane (Dick) Sorensen and Judy (Bob) Sundling, both of Aberdeen, and Juanita (Jack) Rhode of St. Paul, Minn.; one sister, Evelyn DeBilzan of Belleville, Mich.; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and three brothers.

Casketbearers will be Ralph Merkel, Doug Henley, Brian Henley, Rob Gravatt, Shane Wanous and Troy Niesen.

Walter Picker

Isabel -- The funeral for Walter Picker, 92, of Isabel will be at 10 a.m. MDT today at the Isabel Baptist Church. The Rev. Delbert Bach will officiate.

Burial will be in the Hillsview cemetery at Isabel under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home, Mobridge.

He died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, N.D.

Walter Picker was born Feb. 14, 1908, to William and Charlotte (Saarn) Picker at Milesville. The family moved to what is now known as Glad Valley when he was 2 years old. His parents ran a stopping place, which was called Pickerville, for the people who were traveling through to the West.

He married Ruth King in 1932. They went to work herding sheep for the next seven years. They then traveled to Oregon in 1936 and worked at various jobs until returning to South Dakota in 1939. In 1941, they bought a small farm, where they lived and worked until 1962. They sold this farm and bought the Ottis Domina Place at Glad Valley, where he continued raising cattle and working at various jobs. Later they moved into the Isabel Manor and resided there for three years, in which time they bought a trailer home to live in. She died in 1988.

He enjoyed fellowship in church and playing hymns on his violin.

Survivors include one daughter, Pearl Kearn of Isabel; one son, Gordon Picker of Isabel; one brother, Grant Picker of Hermiston, Ore.; three sisters, Charlotte Hoagland, Isabel DeBeur and Mona King, all of Hermiston; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, one sister and two brothers.

Casketbearers will be Kevin Benson, Randy Benson, Bart Harris, Jim Clark, Jay Boldt and Stuart Schimdt.

L. Margaret Fuhrman

Aberdeen -- L. Margaret Fuhrman, 88, of Aberdeen died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at the Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Her funeral will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, Mansfield. The Rev. Harold E. Salem will officiate.

Burial will be in the Warner Township cemetery with Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen, in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to noon Thursday at the funeral home in Aberdeen. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church in Mansfield.

Margaret Slack was born Dec. 30, 1911, to Harrison and Irene (Churchill) Slack in Stratford. She was raised and educated in the Stratford area and graduated from Stratford High School in 1930. She then attended a business college in Mankato, Minn. She worked at Koester's Implement in Mansfield.

On Sept. 8, 1934, she married William E. Fuhrman in Stratford. They farmed in the Mansfield area and continued to farm there throughout their lives. They moved to Mansfield in the 1960s and moved to Aberdeen in the early 1980s. He died Sept. 29, 1992, and she continued to make Aberdeen her home. She moved into the Bethesda Home of Aberdeen in 1996.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mansfield, where she sang in the choir, helped with the Royal Rummage of the First Presbyterian Church, taught Sunday school and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church Women. She was a member of the Busy Bees Extension Club, Bridge Club, the Fireside Poetry Club in Aberdeen and belonged to the Ladies of the Moose.

She enjoyed writing poetry (she wrote "Pickels, Preserves and Prairie Nights"), word and mind games and was a champion speller at the Bethesda Home.

Survivors include one son, Bill (Lynne) Fuhrman of Aberdeen; two daughters, Shirley (Ron) Morgan of Warner, and Charlean (Lynn) Croxton of Carmel, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter and one sister.

Casketbearers will be Pat Hansen, Mike Hansen, Randy Wilke, Darel Smith, Melvin Roesch, Lyle Fuhrman, Don Kalt and Ted Koester.

Gerald R. Snyder

Groton -- The Mass of Christian burial for Gerald R. Snyder, 72, of Groton will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Groton. The Rev. David Janes will officiate.

Burial will be in St. John's Catholic cemetery at Conde with Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel of Groton in charge of arrangements.

There will be a wake service at 7 tonight at the funeral chapel.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral chapel and for one hour prior to the Mass Saturday at the church.

He died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Vencore Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

Gerald R. Snyder was born Jan. 17, 1928, to Ralph and Madelin (Pritchard) Snyder at Hurley. He moved with his family to Groton, Leola, Claremont and Conde. He graduated from Claremont High School in 1946. He then attended South Dakota State in Brookings in 1946 and 1947. He returned to the farm and raised registered black Angus cattle near Conde. He entered the U.S. Army in February 1951 and received a medical discharge in May 1951. He returned to the farm after his service.

He married Alys Cleveland on Aug. 30, 1951, at St. John's Catholic Church in Conde. He semi-retired in 1995, and they moved to Groton.

He belonged to many boards and organizations, including the Benton Township and Conde school boards; Benton Township board; the township Agriculture Service Center; Farmers Elevator; the Spink County ASC committee; American Angus Association; the John Deere Two-Cylinder Club; the Farm Bureau board of directors; the American Legion; the Olive Grove Golf Association; St. John's Catholic cemetery Association; St. John's Catholic Church and choir; and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and choir. He was a 4-H leader and an emergency medical technician.

He was an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards and golf, raising cattle, gardening and helping others.

Survivors include his wife of Groton; and three brothers, Dr. Robert Snyder of Groton, Donald Snyder of Hot Springs and Dr. George Snyder of Oronoco, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter in infancy.

Casketbearers will be Paul Snyder, R. Michael Snyder, Robert Snyder, Douglas Snyder, Gregory Cleveland and Jonathan Cleveland.

Yvonne "Vonnie" Denice Rick

Fort Pierre -- The funeral for Yvonne "Vonnie" Denice Rick, 48, of Fort Pierre and formerly of Webster, Conde and Bradley, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bradley. The Rev. Terry Knudson will officiate.

Burial will be in Prairie Hill cemetery in Bradley with Furness Funeral Home in Clark in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home, and prior to the services Thursday at the church.

She died Sunday, June 4, 2000, after a brief illness due to cancer at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.

Yvonne Rick was born Feb. 13, 1952, to Maurice and Ardys (Christensen) Rick in Webster. She attended 12 grades at Bradley, graduating in 1970. She then attended Northern State College in Aberdeen, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in education. She first taught at Conde for 14 years. She then taught in Pierre for the past 12 years at the Buchanan School. She taught children with learning disabilities and special education as well as remedial reading and mathematics.

She enjoyed children and reading and acquired a large library over the years. She also enjoyed camping, collecting stamps and antiques.

Survivors include her parents of Bradley; and one sister, Valerie Foster of Fort Pierre.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Casketbearers will be Alan Yexley, Darrell Hartman, Donald Olson, Fred VanGilder, Richard Harrington and Donald Merkel.
