Rev. Fred Clifford Self, age 85, of Maryville, died Sunday, June 26, 2011, at the family home. Rev. Self was a member of East Maryville Baptist Church and the former pastor of several churches. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in WWII. He was preceded in death by his son and daughter, Garry Self and Margaret Ann Cooper. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Anna Mae Rogers Self; sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell and Michele Self and Larry and Becky Self; grandchildren, Tony Cooper, April Self, Amanda Johnson, Darrell Thomas, Dana Basler and Darren Self; five great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Butch Cooper; sisters, Judy Payne and Calberta Best. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at East Maryville Baptist Church with Rev. Butch Cooper, Rev. Keith Johnson and Rev. David Frame officiating. The family and friends will assemble at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 30, 2011, at Grandview Cemetery icon for Interment icon Services. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at East Maryville Baptist Church from 5 until 7 p.m. Friends may call at their convenience after 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at Smith Funeral & Cremation Service, Maryville, 983-1000

Joyce Michele Dukes

Joyce Michele Dukes, age 52, of Alcoa, passed away Sunday, June 26, 2011, at her home surrounded by family and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, James “Jimmy” F. Dukes; grandparents, Archie and Myrtle Ezell and Oscar and Ollie Dukes; and aunts and uncles, Grady Ezell, Donald Ezell, Barbara Sue Lewis, Rita Dunn, Peggy Burns and Barbara Naron. She is survived by her mother, Mary Ann Dukes; daughters and sons-in-law, Kelly and Matt Watson and Amy and Brock Ellis; granddaughters, Lacy and Alyssa Ellis; sister, Lori Dukes; brother and sister-in-law, Derrick and Christie Dukes; nieces and nephews, Makayla, Macey and Jimmy Dukes; and special aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends in Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina. Funeral service will be held 8 p.m. Monday, June 27, 2011, at Miller Funeral Home Magnolia Chapel, Rev. Jimmy Effler officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org or 800-227-2345) in memory of Joyce. Family and friends will meet 1 p.m. Tuesday at Clark’s Grove Cemetery icon for the graveside and interment icon service. Victoria May Morton

Victoria May Morton, age 29, of Gatlinburg, passed away Monday, May 9, 2011. Miss Morton has been battling illness for the past 14 years, showing tremendous courage and grace each and every day. Her interests in life were many and varied. She was an environmentalist, an animal lover, a student of Yoga, an avid reader, and an incredibly gifted creative writer. As a student of Christian Science, she found great comfort and peace in its literature, in the most difficult last few years. She treasured occasions when she was able to go out to see independent films, music concerts, and theatrical productions and she hoped to participate in dance classes herself one day. More than anything, she dreamed of traveling around the world. As she journeys on, may she find herself dancing joyously over foreign lands to her heart's content. She is preceded in death by her sister, Angel Hope Morton; grandfather, Louis O. Morton Sr.; grandmother, Alma Morton; father, Louis O. Morton Jr. and grandmother, Helena Furbish. Victoria is survived by her mother, Natalie Morton; brother, Oliver Morton; sisters, Samantha Pirkowski and Tracey Starker. She was beloved by many cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends. Of special note are Jennifer Hodge and Jim and Sandy Foster, who blessed her so very much, especially during hospital stays. Thank you for joining us as we celebrate her special life. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Friday with a memorial service to follow at 7 p.m. in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Chaplain Sandy Foster officiating. Violet Wall

Violet Wall was born icon on February 7, 1916, and went home to be with the Lord on June 19, 2011. Her home-going celebration will be Friday, June 24, 2011, at Smith Trinity Chapel. Family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. Friday, June 24, 2011, at Smith Trinity Chapel. Interment icon will follow at Grandview Cemetery. Edna Stinnett Abney

Edna Stinnett Abney, age 84, of Alcoa, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at UT Medical Center. She was a longtime member of Central Baptist Church, Alcoa. Preceded in death by loving husband of 58 years, J.T. Abney; siblings, Leon Stinnett, Mardell Gibson, and Wilford Stinnett; parents, Guy and Katie Stinnett. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Phillip and Nan Abney of Texas; daughter, Judy L. Abney of Maryville; grandchildren, Jama Williams of Alcoa, Scott and Niki Love of Maryville, Shannon Abney of California and Jason Abney of Texas; great-grandchildren, Alexis Ferguson, Kyler Love, Jessie Williams, Gracie Love; sister, Betty Drown of Oak Ridge; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses on the 5th floor at UT Medical Center for all their care and support. They would also like to thank all her friends at Asbury Place Maryville for all their love and care. Ralph ‘Shorty’ H. Gibson

Ralph “Shorty” H. Gibson, 86, of Alcoa, passed away June 21, 2011, at home after a valiant battle with cancer. He was the son of the late William and Minnie Gibson, and one of five brothers. On April 12, 1947, he married Eula McFall, who preceded him in death. Mr. Gibson served in the U.S. Army as a medic during World War II. After his discharge, he worked with several companies before gaining employment at ALCOA, Inc., from which he retired in 1987. He was a retired member of Local 309 United Steel Workers of America and member of Masonic Lodge #719. Ralph was a lifelong member of Central Baptist Church in Alcoa. Preceded in death by wife, Eula McFall Gibson; brothers, Arthur, Elmer, Roy and Ray Gibson. Survivors include daughter, Linda Castleman of Nashville, Tenn.; son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Jeanne Gibson of Maryville; grandson, Cody Gibson and fiancé, Amanda McDougald; granddaughter, Breck McFall Castleman and friend, Jacob Sharbel; special sister-in-law, Rose Gibson; several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will assemble for graveside service and interment icon at noon, Friday, June 24, 2011, at Grandview Cemetery icon with Rev. Greg Kelly and Rev. George Gilbert officiating. Friends may call at their convenience after 11 a.m., Thursday, June 23, 2011, at the funeral home. Samuel Edward ‘Citico’ Griffith

Samuel Edward “Citico” Griffith, age 70, of Madisonville, passed away 11:50 a.m. Sunday, June 19, 2011, at Park West Medical Center. He was a member of Citico Baptist Church and retired from ALCOA Aluminum Company of America after 37 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and being among friends and family. Preceded in death by parents, Dillon and Natalie Baker Griffith; brother, James Griffith; son-in-law, Joe Russell; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Howard and Mary Williams; sister-in-law, Zula Brock. Survivors include wife of 44 years, Reba Williams Griffith; daughters and son-in-law, Cindy Russell of Tellico Plains, Martie and Rodney Queen; a dear friend that he loved as a son, Wayne Haynes, and wife, Diane; grandchildren, Brody, Braden and Hanna Haynes, all of Madisonville; stepgrandchildren, Abagail and Jackson Queen, of Maryville; sisters and brother-in-law, Loraine and Roy Williams, Nadine Griffith, all of Madisonville; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Clarence and Velma Williams, of Vonore, Clifford and Margaret Haynes, of Coker Creek, Louise Cox, Clifford and Irene Williams, of Madisonville, Gary and Edith Tinch, of Jamestown; many loved nieces and nephews and friends; special great-nephews, Jason Frank, of Vonore, and Kelly Cox, of Madisonville. Clyde Ray Kirkland

A celebration of life service for Clyde Ray Kirkland, 67, is planned for 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at the home of Kenneth and Mary Whaley, 2924 Glenn Road, Louisville. He died Friday, June 17. Please bring lawn chairs to the service.

Bradley Tyson ‘Brad’ Ellis

Bradley Tyson “Brad” Ellis, 35, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 10, 2011, at his home. He was a member of Everett Hills Baptist Church. Brad graduated from Maryville High School and attended East Tennessee State University. He was employed for several years by PC Systems. Brad loved to read and had a brilliant mind and wonderful memory, especially for “trivia.” His brother always said, “If I don’t know the answer, Brad does!” He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Edward J. and Virgie Ellis and Arthur N. and Carrie Mae Brown. He is survived by parents, Larry R. and Linda B. Ellis; brother, Brock E. Ellis and Brock’s wife Amy; his nieces, Lacy and Alyssa Ellis, whom he loved dearly; many cousins and friends. He will be missed by all. Family will receive friends at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 16, with a memorial service at 7 p.m. at Everett Hills Baptist Church with Dr. John H. Franklin officiating. Tina Aynn Cunningham, 41, of Louisville, died Saturday, May 28, 2011, at Blount Memorial Hospital. Survivors include her sons, James Hodge Jr., Andrew Ray Cunningham, Kevin and Brandon Hawn; daughter, Samantha Cunningham; mother, Mary Hodge; brother, Jason Hodge; sister, Stephanie Morales.
