Mrs. Mildred Irene Smith Mitchell
Mrs. Mildred Irene Smith Mitchell, 76, widow of James Douglas Mitchell Sr. and resident of Summertown/Mt. Pleasant, died Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.
Services for Mrs. Mitchell will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Neal Funeral Home in Lawrenceburg with Bro. J.C. Christian and Jeff Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Summertown Cemetery. The family will visit with friends from 5-9 p.m. Monday.
The Lawrence County native was the daughter of the late Emerson Milton and Ethel Uni Smith.
She was a retired secretary at the Lawrence County School Bus Garage and a homemaker.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant and Mt. Pleasant Senior Citizens. In Mildred's earlier years, she was a member of the Ethridge Eastern Stars.
She is survived by one son, James Douglas (Donna) Mitchell Jr. of Athens, Ala.; a daughter, Debbie Mitchell (Wendell) O'Neal of Mt. Pleasant; a brother, Bill (Betty) Smith of Summertown; a sister, Elizabeth Bennett of Nashville; a granddaughter, Karla (Frederick) Thuresson of Nashville; a grandson, Brad (Robyn) O'Neal of Spring Hill; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Tim Rail, Virgil Stewart, Jerry Smith, Tony Smith, Junior Adams, Jerry Brunson, Danny Dickson and Jimmy Konig.
Honorary pallbearers will be friends and relatives that camped and fished with Doug and Mildred at the Tennessee River, employees of the Mt. Pleasant Phosphate Museum, members of the Mt. Pleasant Senior Citizens, employees of Maury Regional Hospital and employees of Life Care and Columbia Care nursing home facilities.

Charles R. Wainwright Franklin III
Charles R. "Buddy" Wainwright Franklin III, 63, died Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.
Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday at Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church with Dr. James McKissack officiating. Burial will be in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Roundtree, Napier and Ogilvies Columbia Funeral Home.
He was the son of the late Charles Rozelle Franklin and Velma D. Wainwright. He served in the U.S. Air Force as CHP Specialist and received the Good Conduct on May 7, 1959.
He was president of the Godfathers Motorcycle Club. He was a graduate of Carver-Smith High School. He retired from CSX Railroad after 30 years of service. He was a member of Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church.
Survivors include his wife, Kimberly Thalia Webb Franklin of Columbia; a son, Darryl Franklin Sr. (Tammy) of Columbia; daughters, Knykia Rozzelle, Kiandra Thalia, Bonnie Franklin and Kendra Luticia Cannon, all of Columbia; devoted cousin, Jacquline Greene; sisters-in-law, Sonya Jennings and Sonji Wilson; devoted extended family, Webb, Zachary, Osborne and Walker families; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be members of the Godfathers Motorcycle Club and the American Legion Post 170.
Alene Campbell Newton
Alene Campbell Newton, 91, died Friday, May 19, 2004.
Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Bennett-May Chapel in Pulaski with Leeland Johnson officiating.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the funeral Sunday.
Burial will be in Scotts Hill Cemetery.
Newton was the daughter of the late Buford and Maggie "Rucker" Campbell. She was retired from Lee-Mar Shirt Company.
In addition to the parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Newton; and a brother, Dillard Campbell.
Survivors include a brother, McAmis Campbell; and several nieces and nephews.
Vergie Gertrude Washburn Rone
Vergie Gertrude Washburn Rone, 90, died Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Hidden Acres Nursing Home.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Whispering Hills Free Church of God with Marvin Potts officiating.
Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Sunday at the church. Neal Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Burial will be in Summertown Cemetery.
She was the daughter of the late Lewis and Sarah Staggs Washburn. She was a member of the Emmanuel Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by husband, Ollie C. Rone; and a son, William Louis Rone.
Survivors include Barbara Gresham and Betty Sisk, both of Summertown, Bonita Dearmond of Ethridge, Doyle Shrader of Columbia, Frank Washburn of Michigan and Nettie Shoemaker of Arizona, eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Lou V. Abernathy, 82, died Saturday, May 15, 2004, at her residence.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel at Carr & Erwin with burial to follow at Giles Memory Garden.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leeroy Abernathy; brothers, A.A. Smith Jr., William Smith and Royce Smith; and a sister, Elise Bledsoe.

The Maury County native was the son of the late Robert D. and Janie Bailey Green. He was retired from the United States Postal Service. He was a member of Sylvan Street Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred C. Green; brothers, J.D., William, Benjamin, Hardin, James and Vernon Hayes Green; a son, Joel A. Green; and a granddaughter.
Survivors include a sister, Dovie Ann Laird of Chicago, Ill.; a son, Robert L. Green; daughters, Harriette Patricia Hurd and Mildred Marie Green; and three grandchildren.

She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Dehlin Puryear. She was a member of the Waymon Chapel A.M.E. Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Brown Mitchell.
Survivors include sons, Otis Mitchell Sr. and Leroy Mitchell; daughters, Gladys Jermary and Ethel Lewis; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Nelson R. Miller Jr., 49, of Columbia, died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at NHC Health Care.

He was the son of Nelson R. Miller Sr. of Stockton, Calif., and the late Claudia LeMay Miller Secrest. He was employed at Porter and Walker Hardware. He was a graduate of Columbia Central High School.
Survivors in addition to his father include his wife, Mrs. Katie McCord Miller of Columbia; sons, Jeremy Miller and Joshua Miller, both of Columbia, Mark Wilson and Larry Wilson, both of Nashville, and Eric Polk of Indianapolis, Ind.; a daughter, JuQeta Harris of Murfreesboro; sisters, Ms. Elaine Booker, Mrs. Vanessa (Wayne) Frierson and Ms. Claudette Cladwell, all of Columbia; and 10 grandchildren.
Mr. Elroy Gant
NASHVILLE - Mr. Elroy Gant, 68, of Nashville, formerly of Columbia, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville.
Visitation with the family will be held from 2-3 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul A.M.E. Church with services to follow at 3 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Claude E. Tears from Chicago, Ill., officiating.
The body will lie-in-state Saturday at V.K. Ryan & Son Funeral Home with burial in Rosemount Cemetery.
The Maury County native was the son of the late Ernest and Trudo Gant. He attended the Maury County school system, graduating from Carver-Smith High School in 1953.
He was retired from the Metro school system in Nashville and was a member of First Corinthians Baptist Church where he was a member of the Gospel Choir. He was United in Holy Matrimony to Pauline Jones, and to this union four children were born.
Survivors include his children, Detral D. (Claudis) Toran of Chicago, Ill., Darrell E. Gant of Bellwood, Ill., Jacqueline Y. Gant of Bellwood, Ill., and Jeffrey T. Gant of Jackson; two brothers, Clenest (Gloria) Gant of Lomboard, Ill., and Ernest H. Gant of LaVergne; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews and friends.

Jeffery Paul Burns, 38, retired mechanic, died Monday, May 24, 2004, at his residence on Nashville Highway.
