Thomas A. Sternberg, beloved husband and daddy, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 9, 2003.
He was born in Hammond, IN on May 5, 1961.
Tom served 8 years in the United States Army and was a distinguished honor graduate of Fort Sam Houston as a medical laboratory specialist.
He was originally from Indiana but made his home in San Antonio.
He held an associates degree in supervisory leadership from Hawaii Pacific College. He also received an Associates Degree in Nursing from the College of Lake County.
He was employed with the Baptist Health System and also worked at the Connally Prison serving as the director of nursing and ending his career at BAMC as an O.R. Nurse and served as the first president of the local Professional Nurses Union.
He was an avid collector of unique memorabilia, especially if it made noise.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Linda Sternberg (Hall); daughters, Aimee Marie and Angela Marie Sternberg; father, Charles Andrew Sternberg and wife, Barbara; mother, Sandra Kay Burkholder and husband, Wayne; brothers, Charles Edward, James Walter, Eric Dwayne, and so many other loving family and friends.
Tom was the proudest Aggie Daddy, and he was not only a father to his daughters, but also a friend and will be dearly missed. He will also be missed by his animal colleagues, Pickles, Macie and Wiley.

Effie S. Arnold, age 90, of San Antonio, died Wednesday, December 10, 2003.
A fifth generation Texan, she was born in Whitney, TX and grew up in Crosbyton, TX.
Mrs. Arnold was a longtime member of P.E.O. Chapter BX since 1961, having served as a Chapter President.
She was a member of Alamo Heights United Methodist Church for over 50 years and was a Cum Laude graduate of Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX in 1933.
She served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps Women’s Reserve during World War II.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Ray Arnold. Survived by her sons, Richard S. Arnold and wife, Susan, Kelly Arnold and wife, Carol; grandchildren, Michelle Bogan and husband, Mike, and Christopher Arnold; sister, Ruth Chase; several nieces.

Virginia Henderson Selman
Born in Waco, TX on Aug. 25, 1919

Virginia Frances Henderson Selman passed away on December 9, 2003.
She was born August 25, 1919 in Waco, Texas.
She graduated from Waco High School in 1937 and worked for Service Mutual Insurance Co. of Waco and later for USAA in San Antonio. She was an active member for over 55 years of Woodlawn Christian Church, serving her church in many offices and with great dedication.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Venice Roland Henderson and Adah B. Henderson and brother, Venice Roland Henderson, Jr.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Ervin F. Selman; son, Don Selman; granddaughter, Elizabeth Selman; aunt, Rachel DeZavala; nieces, Kathryn Malone and Miriam Ely; and cousin, Virginia Quinn.

Gavin Wade Rose
Born in Waco, Texas on Feb. 10, 1965

Gavin Wade Rose of San Antonio, TX, age 38, passed away Saturday, December 06, 2003.
He graduated from Randolph High School where he played football for the Randolph Rohawks.
He was a longtime Southwest Airline employee well liked by all of his co-workers.
Gavin was a dedicated son, fine husband and proud father of two wonderful children. He was a very personable, out going person who never met a stranger.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah Rose, son, Steven Rose, daughter, Amie Rose; mother and father, Gail Jones and Charles Rose; brothers, Troy Rose and Evan Rose and sister, Teresa Jones and a large extended family.

Maria Zamudio Esparza

Maria Zamudio Esparza, born May 2, 1922 to Julian Zamudio and Justina Reza in Taylor, TX, died Saturday, December 6, 2003. She had a massive heart attack while enjoying her favorite pastime, playing bingo.
Maria was a single mother most of her life and managed to raise her five children. She was a perfect role model and an inspiration to her children, and to her brothers and sisters.
She was preceded in death by her son Jose Castaņeda who passed away in 1996.
She is survived by her sons, Fernando Castaņeda, Robert Hernandez, George Zamudio and wife, Andrea; and her only daughter, Juanita Zamudio; her grandchildren, Georgette Zamudio, Nicole Zamudio and Ariel Jade Zamudio; and numerous brothers and sisters.

Joyce Anita LeMaistre

Joyce Trapp LeMaistre, age 71, of San Antonio died Friday, December 5, 2003.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, Charles A. LeMaistre, M. D.; sons, Charles F. LeMaistre, M. D. and his wife, Loretta, William S. LeMaistre, J. D., M. P. H. of Fort Worth, TX; daughters, Joyce A. LeMaistre, M. D. and her husband, Ron Philo, Ph. D., Helen Meyer, M. S. and her husband, Ted; grandchildren, Court LeMaistre, Collin LeMaistre, Julia LeMaistre, Ian LeMaistre, Aubrey and Theo Meyer; brother, Dewey Trapp and wife, Mary Joyce of Aliceville, Al.

Pat Lewis

Pat Lewis, age 59, of San Antonio, died Wednesday, December 3, 2003, after a long battle with cancer. Pat was raised in Minnesota until her move to Texas in 1979. She worked as an office manager in the medical and dental fields, until her retirement last year. Pat’s whole life was spent being a wonderful caregiver to her family and “grandbabies”. She will be remembered as a loving wife and mother, who valued family and friendship above all else. Survivors: husband of nearly 37 years, Bill Lewis; son, Brad Lewis, San Antonio; daughter, Stacy Brister and husband, Chris, Houston, TX; grandson, Brandon Lewis; granddaughter, Ellie Brister; brothers, John Duffy and wife, Lucero, Bullhead City, AZ and Wade Duffy and wife, Paula, Canyon Lake; nephews, John Duffy, Miles Duffy and Morris Duffy; niece, Sarah Duffy.

James Dwight Barry
Born in Manhattan, KS on Nov. 25, 1942

Services will be Tuesday for Captain James “Jim” Dwight Barry, a decorated helicopter pilot whose 37-year career ranged from search-and-rescue missions in Viet Nam to transporting workers to oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.
Jim, a resident of College Station, TX, died Dec. 1 when the Bell 407 helicopter he was piloting crashed in the Gulf as he was returning from an oil rig. He was 61.
He was born Nov. 25, 1942 in Manhattan, KS, the son of a B-24 pilot who died in a crash in the Philippines near the end of World War II. He grew up in Corpus Christi, TX, dreaming of being a pilot.
As a student at Texas A&M; University, Jim was a member of the Corps of Cadets, the Ross Volunteers, and the Singing Cadets. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology in 1965.
He began Naval Officer’s Training School for the Navy the following year and soon began flight training to fulfill his dream. Jim served on the carriers USS Intrepid and USS Roosevelt, flying helicopters for anti-submarine and search-and-rescue missions around the world, including a tour in Viet Nam.
His nine medals and other decorations from his Navy years included the Air Medal for meritorious achievement. He was a security officer for the Pacific Missile Range in Hawaii before his honorable discharge as a Lieutenant in 1976.
Jim then began a 27-year career as a pilot with Lafayette, LA-based Petroleum Helicopters Inc., a major transportation source for workers and equipment in the oil and gas industry. He worked in the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and the Rocky Mountains. He was a Captain for PHI when he died.
In addition to being a skilled and careful pilot, he also restored and flew vintage aircraft as a member of the Commemorative Air Force. A lifelong member of the Boy Scouts of America, Jim was an Eagle Scout, a member of the Order of the Arrow, and as an adult, held leadership roles in Scouts and Explorers. He enjoyed the outdoors, spending many days camping, hunting and fishing.
“He lived to fly, ” said his son Jason, also a pilot.
Survivors include his stepfather John K. Halloran of San Antonio, TX; sisters Helenan Polansky and Karen Halloran of San Antonio, and Kathleen Halloran of Oracle, AZ; sons Dwight of Denton, TX., Jason of Centennial, CO., and James of Bryan, TX.; and granddaughter Kate of Denton, TX.
Services are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough, San Antonio, TX. Burial with full military honors is to follow at 11 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National cemetery.
The family suggests memorial contributions in Jim’s name to the Association of Former Students at Texas A&M;, 505 George Bush Drive, College Station, TX 77840.

Dr. William W. Sawtelle
Born in Deepwater, TX on Feb. 17, 1917
Died Dec. 5, 2003 and resided in San Antonio, TX.

Dr. William Sawtelle, age 86, of San Antonio, Texas died Friday, December 5, 2003.
Dr. Sawtelle was a graduate of UT Austin, UT Medical School Galveston and University of Iowa at Iowa City, Iowa.
He truly loved all of his patients during his 50 years of practicing medicine in San Antonio. His partners during practice were Dr. Perry Nadig and Dr. Jerry Kruse. His close friend Maury Maverick, Jr. referred to him in several of his articles as “The Beloved Urologist”.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Sawtelle.
Survived by his wife, Ruth; children, Craig Joseph Sawtelle, Amy Sawtelle Roberts and husband, David, Molly Sawtelle Ellwood and husband, Richard; grandchildren, Emily and Claire Sawtelle, Hannah and Beth Roberts, Madeline, Kathryn, William and Robert Ellwood; brothers, Dan Sawtelle and Charles M. Sawtelle; sisters, Alice Dalley and Charlotte Field.
