Ora Lee Morrison

Ora Lee Morrison, age 83, of Boling, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, in a Wharton hospital following a brief illness. She was born on March 15, 1921, in Stigler, Okla., the daughter of the late Elmer Mitchell and Zelia Looper Mitchell.

Mrs. Morrison had been a resident of Boling since 1982 and was a member of Iago Federated Church. She married Elton Ellis “Bill” Morrison on April 19, 1941 in Wharton.

She worked as a secretary for Wheeling Steel Company until her retirement in 1978. Mrs. Morrison was active in Iago Federated Church.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, at the Iago Federated Church with Mickey Reynolds officiating. Burial followed in Wharton City Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Morrison of Boling; sister, Lucille Sciba of Lake Jackson; seven nieces and nephews also survive.

Pallbearers were Donald Sciba, Louis Sciba, Russell Sciba, Roy Smith, Ray James and Steve Galbreath.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Iago Federated Church, Rt. 1, Box 208, Boling, TX 77420.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Loraine Ward

Funeral services for Loraine “Low” Ward Sr., 66, of Texas City, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Mount Olive Baptist Church, 3602 Sealy, in Galveston with Rev. Walter Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Bowden Cemetery in Wharton at 2:30 p.m. under the direction of E.R. Johnson Family Mortuary, 3828 Avenue O, in Galveston. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at E. R. Johnson Family Mortuary.

Mr. Ward died Feb. 10, 2005, in Texas City. A native of Wharton County, he was born Jan. 13, 1939, to Eugene Sr. and Willie Edna Brown Ward.

He attended public school in Wharton County and was a retired operator from the Kelso Company.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Ward; son, Loraine Ward Jr.; daughters and son-in-law, Loretta and Larry Lewis, Tonya and Sonya Ward and Andrea Cahee, all of Texas City; 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; brothers and sister-in-law, James and Rosa Bell Ward and Sylvester “Tip” Ward; sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and James Heard.

Virginia Hernandez

Virginia Falcon Hernandez, 62, of Richwood, has gone to be with the Lord on Feb. 12, 2005.

Mrs. Hernandez is survived by her husband, Ernest R. Hernandez; her children, Mark and wife, Ann, and their children Alex, Megan, Adam and Amanda, Brandon and his wife, Bonnie, Brooke and her husband, Chris. Originally from El Campo, she was one of 13 children. She was preceded in death by her father, Antonio, and mother, Dominga Falcon, and her brother, Manuel Falcon.

She was a very giving person, which was exemplified by her endless love and time she gave to her family and to the community. Mrs. Hernandez loved children and volunteered as a substitute teacher with the Head Start program. An avid reader, she worked a the Clute Municipal Library. Mrs. Hernandez always put her family’s needs before hers and she will be missed.

Pallbearers will be her brothers, Laurance Falcon, Clarence Falcon, Tony Falcon, Daniel Falcon and Israel Falcon and nephew, Ross Falcon.

Honorary pallbearers are Becki Vining, Cheryl Mehl, Cindy Shields, Grace Hatfield, Triera Rickaway and Jill Christal.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, those who wish may make a donation to the Brazosport chapter LULAC Council No. 4655 Scholarship Fund. The family would like to thank all those who prayed for Mrs. Hernandez and who have offered assistance to the family.

Funeral arrangements scheduled today are visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. at Stroud Funeral Home, 538 N. Brazosport Boulevard in Clute and a rosary held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, at St. Michael’s Church in Lake Jackson. Burial services will be held at Restwood Memorial Park Cemetery after the funeral mass. Lunch will be served at St. Michael’s Church Hall following the graveside services.

Ora Lee Morrison

Funeral services for Ora Lee Morrison, 83, of Boling will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Iago Federated Church. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery.
Mrs. Morrison died Feb. 14, 2005, in Wharton.

Nell Burnett

Funeral services for Nell Burnett, 103, of Tyler and former Iago resident, were held Thursday at Lloyd James Funeral Chapel with Rev. David O’Neal officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Burnett was born in 1901 in Carlysle, Penn.

Her family moved to Iago when she was about three years old. She attended Tyler Commercial College where she met and married Adrien R. Burnett Sr. He preceded her in death in 1978. For almost 70 years she made and sold decorated Easter eggs in Tyler and was known locally as “Easter Egg Lady.” Mrs. Burnett was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Tyler, the Cosmos Literary Club and Weekly Book Club.

Survivors include daughter, Carolyn Ann Rosell of Tyler; son, Adrien Richard Burnett Jr. of Tyler; five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Sarah Nell Burnett Smith in 1996.

Mollie Crosby

Mollie Orsak Crosby, age 88, of Wharton, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005, in Wharton. She was born in Sealy on March 31, 1916, the daughter of the late John Orsak and Rosa Kuban Orsak.
Mrs. Crosby was reared in Wallis. She married Charles R. Crosby on Oct. 4, 1940, in New Mexico and he preceded her in death on June 29, 1979. Mrs. Crosby was also preceded in death by a daughter, Fay Gavranovic, and a son, Chuck Crosby; five sisters, Angeline Repka, Sofie Vesley, Julie Orsak, Rosalie Kosik and Martha Zalesak; and three brothers, Frank Orsak, John Orsak and Ludwig Orsak.

She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Mrs. Crosby was a former member of the Gulf Coast Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and the KJZT. She loved arts and crafts. Mrs. Crosby and her family traveled with her husband, who was in the U.S. Army for 24 years and lived in New Mexico, Germany and Georgia.

A funeral mass was held 10 a.m. Thursday March 31, 2005, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating. Interment followed Thursday afternoon in Brookside Memorial Park Cemetery in Houston. Rosary services were recited Wednesday evening at Wharton Funeral Home with Clarice Kutach officiating.

Survivors include her grandchildren, Daniel Gavranovic and wife, Gladys, of Wharton and Rhonda Taormina and husband, Troy, of Richmond; son in law, Frank Gavranovic of Wharton and daughter in law, Chon Ye Crosby, of Houston; great-grandchildren, Anthony Taormina and Franklin Gavranovic.

Pallbearers were Daniel Gavranovic, Frank Gavranovic, Charles Orsak, Daniel Orsak, Joe Orsak and Troy Taormina.

If desiring, memorials may be made to the Holy Family Fellowship Committee, 2011 Briar Lane, Wharton, TX 77488.

J.W. Bethea

Memorial services for J.W. “Bill” Bethea Jr. will be held Saturday, April 2, 2005, at the Arbor of the Memory Gardens in Edna with Rev. Suzanne Brantley officiating. Following the service, a visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church in Edna.

Mr. Bethea died Jan. 5, 2005, in Denver, Colo., following a brief illness. He was born Nov. 18, 1920, in Edna to John W. and Fannie Simpson Bethea.

Survivors include wife, Margaret C. Bethea of Denver, Colo.; daughter, Linza Bethea and son-in-law, John Birmingham of Tucson, Ariz.; a son, John M. Bethea and daughter-in, Susan Bethea of Littleton, Colo.; two grandchildren, John Robert and Christina Bethea; and sisters, Mary Sue Bethea, Corinne Griffin and Frances Stephenson, all of Austin, and Grace Ross of Houston.

Barbara Jessup

Barbara Jean Jessup, age 78, of Blessing died Saturday, March 26, 2005, in a Sugar Land hospital following an extended illness. She was born on June 14, 1926, in Jefferson County, Ken., the daughter of the late Robert G. Hartman and Elizabeth Makeever Hartman.

Mrs. Jessup had been a resident of Blessing since 1964 and was a former resident of Hillje, Wharton and Markham. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Bay City. Mrs. Jessup married Donald Vernon Jessup on Jan. 24, 1948, in Indiana and he preceded her in death on June 11, 1998. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Doreatha McKenny. Mrs. Jessup worked as a microfilm clerk with Bechtel Corporation at the South Texas Nuclear Project for 15 years until her retirement. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, bird watching and spending time with family and friends.

Following cremation, memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Bay City with Rev. Chester Sassman officiating.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Vicki Jessup of Richmond; Pat and Gayla Jessup of Boling; and Danny and Susan Jessup of Palacios; 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and her dearest friend, Weldon Woffard of Bay City.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to: The National Kidney Foundation, 2400 Augusta Drive, Suite 252, Houston, TX 77057; or the American Diabetes Association, 2400 Augusta Drive, Suite 420, Houston, TX 77057.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Hazel Bowen

Graveside services for Hazel Brantley Bowen, 80, of Lufkin, were held Friday in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park with Paul Taylor officiating. Visitation was held Friday at Carroway-Claybar Funeral Home in Lufkin.

Ms. Bowen died March 22, 2005, in a Lufkin hospital. She was born June 3, 1924, in Fayette County, Ala., to the late Audilee Adams and R.V. Walker.

A former resident of East Bernard, she had resided in Lufkin for the past five years. Ms. Bowen was a retired registered nurse having worked at Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital for 30 years. She as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Survivors include her daughters, Cynthia Garrett of Lufkin, Theresa Brantley Polasek of Wharton and Marie Brantley Bonatelli of Shreveport, La.; son and daughter-in-law, Ray R. and Renee Brantley Jr. of Trinity; four grandchildren; and brother, Harold J. Walker of New Orleans, La. She was preceded in death by her sister, Helen Smith.

Orval Heidebrecht

Orval James Heidebrecht, 75, of Bedford, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2005. He was born July 2, 1929, in Goessel, Kan.
A Celebration of Life for Mr. Heidebrecht was held Friday at The Church at Trophy Lakes, 800 Trophy Club Drive, Trophy Club. Visitation was held Thursday afternoon at Forest Ridge Funeral Home in Hurst.

He was an active deacon in The Church at Trophy Lakes.

Survivors include son, Michael Heidebrecht; daughters, Melody Clarke, Ann Coleman, Cynthia DaneshFar, Kim Hall and Jan Hook; brother, Leland Heidebrecht; sister, Sadie Price; grandchildren, Angi Nagy, Brian Burgess, Maria Curry, Mandy Burgess, Joel Criman, Quentin Heidebrecht, Everett Heidebrecht, Hannah Munger, Julia DaneshFar, Zoey DaneshFar, Twyla Hook and George Hook; 12 great-grandchildren and a host of friends and extended family.

Mary Letalien

Funeral services for Mary Louise Luchak Letalien, 87, of Vacaville, Calif., will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery.

Mrs. Letalien died March 21, 2005, in Vacaville.

Pedro Garza

Funeral services for Pedro Garza Jr., 62, of Lane City, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wharton Funeral Home. Burial follows in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call after 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Mr. Garza died April 16, 2005, in a Houston hospital following an extended illness.

Liz Davis

Elizabeth Newell Martin Davis, age 87, died on April 16, 2005, at Gulf Coast Medical Center following a brief illness. She was affectionately called “Liz” by her family and close friends.
Mrs. Martin was born Katherine Elizabeth Newell on September 3, 1917, in Lockhart, to Mr. and Mrs. George Granville Newell. At an early age she moved with her family to Robstown, where she attended public schools, graduating with honors in 1934. Mrs. Martin was one of only two girls in the Robstown High School marching band. She was also a varsity cheerleader. Mrs. Martin attended Texas A&I College, which is now Texas A&M at Kingsville.

She married Jesse Roots Martin, also of Robstown on May 28, 1938, and they made their home in Wharton. They became the parents of two children, James Granville Martin and Katherine Martin. Jesse Martin died April 15, 1963. Six years later she married Charles Roy Davis on Nov. 22, 1969, and they lived in Ganado for the next 21 years. Following retirement, they returned to live in Wharton in 1990. Roy Davis died July 24, 1996.

Mrs. Martin is preceded in death by her two husbands, Jesse Martin and Roy Davis; her beloved son, Jimmy Martin in 1998; her sister Zelma Newell Goodridge, and brother Granville Newell Jr., both of Robstown.

She is survived by her beloved daughter, Kathy Martin Johse and her husband, Kenneth R. Johse; her daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen Martin; three grandchildren, Jesse Elliott Martin and his wife, Stephanie, of Richmond, her name-sake Katherine Elizabeth “Kate” Johse, and Kenneth “Ken” Johse Jr., both of Wharton. Other family survivors are five nieces and five nephews. Mrs. Martin is also survived by her late husband’s children, W.A. Davis of Edna and Doris Davis Farquhar, both of Edna, and his four grandsons and four great-grandchildren.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Wharton where she worshiped regularly until her health failed. Mrs. Martin was a devoted wife, a loving mother, an adoring grandmother and a treasured friend. She will be missed by all.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today, Monday, April 18, at First United Methodist Church under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home with the Reverend Paul Thomasson presiding.
Pallbearers are Ken Johse Jr., Rex Harrison, Joe Terry Prasifka, Jimmie Chambers, Guy Northington and Dr. Harold Northington.

Burial is at Wharton City Cemetery in the Martin family plot.

The family suggests, for those desiring, memorials to First United Methodist Church, 1717 Pioneer, Wharton, TX 77488 or charity of personal choice.
