Funeral services for Jed A. Hill Sr., 87, of Kendleton, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greater Wesley Chapel AMEC with Rev. Willie L. Myles officiating. Burial will follow in Paradise Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Mr. Hill died April 14, 2005, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born April 4, 1918, in Kendleton to Joe and Beatrice Dillard Hill.
Survivors include wife, Ola Mae Houston Hill of Kendleton; sons, Jed A. Hill Jr., McArthur Hill and Joe Hill, all of Kendleton; and three grandchildren.

Jane Scheel
Jane Rosalie Scheel, age 78, of Wharton, died Friday, April 15, 2005, at her residence following a sudden illness. She was born in Fayetteville on March 28, 1927, the daughter of the late Rudolph Novosad and Adela Cordes Novosad.
Mrs. Scheel was reared in Fayetteville and was the oldest daughter of nine siblings, and was more of a mother than a sister to her younger siblings. She was a 67-year resident of Wharton. Mrs. Scheel married George Louis Scheel on June 9, 1947, in Wharton. He preceded her in death on April 14, 1998. After her marriage, she earned her associate degree from Wharton County Junior College. Mrs. Scheel was a homemaker and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, where she enjoyed singing with the church choir. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, KJZT, Wharton County Historical Museum, Community Theater of Wharton, Wharton County Junior College Fine Arts, Railroad Depot Restoration and The Wharton County 100 Club. Besides her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her son, Kevin G. Scheel in 1995; grandson, John Van Osdel; son-in-law, Bill Van Osdel; brothers, Lad Novosad and John Novosad; and brothers-in-law, Pete Wieghat, Bill Sekula, Thomas Jackson and Irwin Meyer.
Funeral mass services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Monday, April 18, 2005, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Monsignor Dan Scheel officiating and Concelebrant Father Henry Rachunek. Interment follows in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 17, at Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating.
Survivors include her daughters, Cynthia Scheel Gentry and husband, Ben, of Houston and Denise Scheel Van Osdel of Gonzales; sisters, Rosalie Meyer of Columbus, Dorothy Wieghat of Needville, Lillian Steffek and husband, Jerry, of Needville, Marie Sekula of Shiner and Adeline Jackson of Austin; brother, Gilbert Novosad and wife, Joyce, of Rosenberg; grandchildren, Courtney Gentry and Ben Gentry Jr., both of Houston, and Jennifer Gentry Wilson and husband, Ron, of Houston; great-grandson, Reid Wilson of Houston; sisters-in-law, Bessie Novosad of Wharton and Lori Novosad of Needville; brother-in-law, Monsignor Dan Scheel of Houston.

Barbara Stovall
Barbara Callaway Stovall, 72, of Magnet, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2005, in Wharton. She was born Dec. 4, 1932, in Palacios to Albert Waymon Callaway and Jennie Clyde Barnette Callaway. She was a resident of Magnet since 1969 and a member of Magnet Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Gilbert B. Stovall of Magnet; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda Jean and Curtis Walls of Bay City; her sons, Charles Waymon Miller of Palacios and Joseph Carl Miller and partner Bob Richardson of Houston; by her daughter-in-law, Melissa Miller of Wharton; by her sisters, Carolyn Maples of Sealy, Marylin Fobes of Watertown, Wis., and Doris Rangel of Victoria; by her brother, Rusty McGrail of Orange, Calif.; and step-brother, Jackie Williams of Bay City; and by eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert W. and Jennie Callaway; her sons, Gilbert Wayne Stovall and Douglas Claude Miller; by her brother, Bruce Callaway; and by one grandchild, Shana Duke.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Bay City. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons Gilbert Law, Felton Law, Tyson Hardy, Michael Quinn, Joshua Wagner and Bryan Mason.

Liz Davis
Elizabeth Newell Martin Davis, age 87, died on April 16, 2005, at Gulf Coast Medical Center following a brief illness. She was affectionately called “Liz” by her family and close friends.
Mrs. Martin was born Katherine Elizabeth Newell on September 3, 1917, in Lockhart, to Mr. and Mrs. George Granville Newell. At an early age she moved with her family to Robstown, where she attended public schools, graduating with honors in 1934. Mrs. Martin was one of only two girls in the Robstown High School marching band. She was also a varsity cheerleader. Mrs. Martin attended Texas A&I College, which is now Texas A&M at Kingsville.
She married Jesse Roots Martin, also of Robstown on May 28, 1938, and they made their home in Wharton. They became the parents of two children, James Granville Martin and Katherine Martin. Jesse Martin died April 15, 1963. Six years later she married Charles Roy Davis on Nov. 22, 1969, and they lived in Ganado for the next 21 years. Following retirement, they returned to live in Wharton in 1990. Roy Davis died July 24, 1996.
Mrs. Martin is preceded in death by her two husbands, Jesse Martin and Roy Davis; her beloved son, Jimmy Martin in 1998; her sister Zelma Newell Goodridge, and brother Granville Newell Jr., both of Robstown.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, Kathy Martin Johse and her husband, Kenneth R. Johse; her daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen Martin; three grandchildren, Jesse Elliott Martin and his wife, Stephanie, of Richmond, her name-sake Katherine Elizabeth “Kate” Johse, and Kenneth “Ken” Johse Jr., both of Wharton. Other family survivors are five nieces and five nephews. Mrs. Martin is also survived by her late husband’s children, W.A. Davis of Edna and Doris Davis Farquhar, both of Edna, and his four grandsons and four great-grandchildren.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Wharton where she worshiped regularly until her health failed. Mrs. Martin was a devoted wife, a loving mother, an adoring grandmother and a treasured friend. She will be missed by all.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today, Monday, April 18, at First United Methodist Church under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home with the Reverend Paul Thomasson presiding.
Pallbearers are Ken Johse Jr., Rex Harrison, Joe Terry Prasifka, Jimmie Chambers, Guy Northington and Dr. Harold Northington.
Burial is at Wharton City Cemetery in the Martin family plot.

Robert Stoy
Robert Marion Stoy, went to be with his Lord on April 10, 2005, in Wharton. He was born in the Red Oaks Community of Terrell on July 30, 1921, the son of the late Robert E. Lee Stoy and Emma B. Grabbs Stoy.
Mr. Stoy was a 1939 graduate of Terrell High School. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Stoy married Sidonia “Dony” Hannusch on June 27, 1947, in Smithville. She preceded him in death on Aug. 2, 1991. He was a 37-year employee of Texas Gulf Sulphur and retired as manager of the Texas Gulf Operations in Mexico in 1982. Mr. Stoy lived some 35 years in Wharton and was a former resident of Mexico, Beaumont and Newgulf. He was named to Who’s Who in the World for his sulphur production. Mr. Stoy was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and a life member of the Lutheran Good Samaritan Home. Besides his parents and wife, Mr. Stoy was preceded in death by his son, Robert Paul Stoy in 2000; sister, Margaret Bynum Mullins; and brothers, James Bynum, Arthur Bynum and Louis Bynum.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday April 12, 2005, at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Barry Sharp officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Joe Joines, Dan Mullins, Noe Sonnier, Dave Mullins, Glenn Hannusch, Stephen Hannusch, David Copeland, Bill Havins and Rankin Reeves.

Funeral services for George Shoppa, 76, of Wharton will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Shoppa died April 25, 2005, in Wharton following a brief illness.

Brian Chandler
Funeral services for Brian Ray Chandler, 25, of Manor, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Friday, at Onion Creek Baptist Church in Austin.
Mr. Chandler died April 17, 2005, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born March 25, 1980, in Landstuhl, Germany, to Edward Chandler and Nancy Joe Wooldridge.
He was a truck driver.
Survivors include wife, Amanda Lea Morgan; parents, Edward Chandler and Nancy Joe Russell; sons, Donovan Ray Chandler and Cody Lee Chandler; brothers, Eugene Chandler, Matthew Chandler and Christopher Chandler; and sister, Stephanie Chandler.

Funeral services for Lena Belle King Ploss, 78, of Wharton, will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Iago Federated Church. Graveside services and interment will follow at 2 p.m. Monday in Resthaven Cemetery in Houston.

Mr. Ploss died April 21, 2005, in Wharton.
