EARL JOSEPH ‘TUP’ HEBERT

Earl Joseph "Tup’’ Hebert, 79, of Jasper died Aug. 29, 2000 at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Forest Oaks Funeral Home in Jasper with burial at West Oaks Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A native of Port Arthur, he lived in Groves before moving to Jasper 20 years ago and was retired from the Fina Oil instrument department. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Hebert of Jasper; son, Earl Joseph Hebert Jr. of Bartlett; daughter, Earline Benton of Groves; brother, Harold Hebert of Port Arthur; sister, Rosa Mae Munlin of Port Arthur; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

SUSAN FERN KEMPE

Susan Fern Kempe, 95, of Beaumont died Aug. 30, 2000 at The Clairmont.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at SouthPark Cemetery in Pearland under the direction of SouthPark Funeral Home in Pearland. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Friday to time of service at the funeral home.

A native of Beaumont, she lived in Houston before moving back to Beaumont and was a retired Jeff Davis Hospital nurse.

Survivors include her sister, Mildred Nusom of Beaumont; and nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

A.J. ‘BUBBA’ MAGGIO

A.J. "Bubba’’ Maggio, 84, of Beaumont died Aug. 29, 2000 at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony Cathedral with burial at Magnolia Cemetery under the direction of Broussard’s Mortuary in Beaumont. A Christian vigil will be at 7 p.m. today at the mortuary.

A lifelong resident of Beaumont, he was a carpenter and cabinet maker and a World War II U.S. Army and Army Air Corps veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Aline Maggio of Beaumont; son, John Harlan Maggio of Lumberton; and granddaughter, Nicol Maggio of Lumberton.

Memorials may be made to St. Anthony Restoration Fund, 700 Jefferson, Beaumont, Texas 77701.

HUBERT ‘RABBIT’ MARTIN

Hubert "Rabbit’’ Martin, of Port Arthur died Aug. 28, 2000 at Christus St. Mary Hospital.

A graveside service will be Saturday at Our Mother of Mercy Shrine in Rayne, La., under the direction of Gabriel Funeral Home in Port Arthur. Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home chapel.

A native of Rayne, he lived in Port Arthur 50 years and was employed with Port Iron Inc.

Survivors include his daughter, Cheryl Fish of Beaumont; sons, Scott Martin, Keith Martin and Chad Martin, all of Port Arthur, Stephon Martin of Austin and Hubert Martin Jr. and Herbert James Martin, both of Rayne; sisters, Dorothy Johnson and Levoria Rochon, both of Rayne; brothers, Gilbert Martin of Alexandria, La., Joseph Martin of Beaumont and Leroy Martin of Port Arthur; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

KIMBERLY MERRELL

Kimberly Merrell, 26, of Vidor died Aug. 29, 2000 at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Pine Forest Baptist Church in Vidor with burial at Williamson Cemetery under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Vidor. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A native of Beaumont, she lived in Vidor most of her life and was an On Stage Hair Design hairdresser.

Survivors include her parents, Dale and Evelyn Sharpe of Vidor; husband, Rodney Merrell of Vidor; son, Jacob Merrell of Vidor; brother, Dale Sharpe of Vidor; and grandparents, A.H. "Pistol’’ and Claudine Thomas of Vidor, and Emeleene Sharpe of Malvern, Ark.

GLADYS MILLER

Gladys Miller, 84, of Port Neches died Aug. 29, 2000 at Crestview Nursing Home in Waco.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Broussard’s Mortuary in Nederland with burial at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Orange County. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the mortuary.

A native of Orange, she lived in the Port Neches and Port Arthur areas most of her life and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughter, Kay Rogers of Hewitt; sister, Flavia Landry of Silsbee; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

OPAL STOREY-MORGAN

Opal Storey-Morgan, 85, of Bridge City died Aug. 25, 2000 at The Clairmont in Beaumont.

She donated her body to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

A native of El Reno, Okla., and a former resident of Beaumont, she lived in the Bridge City area many years. She was an artist and was a World War II Women’s Army Corps veteran.

Survivors include her daughter, Janey Dean of Bridge City; brother, Ralph Storey of Oklahoma City; sister, Connie Reese of Ashland, Ky.; four grandsons; and six great-grandchildren.

WILLIE LEE Parker JR.

Willie Lee Parker Jr., 68, of Beaumont died Aug. 29, 2000 at his residence.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery under the direction of Calvary Mortuary. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Saturday to time of service at the church.

A native of Bon Wier, he lived in Beaumont 38 years and was retired from Beaumont Steel.

Survivors include his wife, Eula Mae Parker of Beaumont; son, Willie L. Parker III of Beaumont; and four grandchildren.

KAREN JANELL DURHAM PHILLIPS

Karen Janell Durham Phillips, 34, of DeSoto died Aug. 30, 2000 in Colmesneil.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Colmesneil with burial at Bethany Cemetery near Colmesneil under the direction of Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home in Woodville. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A native of Tyler County and a former longtime resident of Colmesneil, she lived in DeSoto five years.

Survivors include her husband, David Phillips of DeSoto; parents, Leonard and Betty Durham of Colmesneil; grandparents, Chuck and Laverne Wood of Colmesneil; and brother, Wendell Durham of Lawton, Okla.

Memorials may be made to Colmesneil Ex-Students Association.

ANGELA DAWN ‘ANGIE’ PITTS

Angela Dawn "Angie" Pitts, 17, of Hardin died Aug. 29, 2000 in Hardin.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Allison Funeral Service in Liberty. Visitation will be from noon to 9:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral service.

A native of Baytown, she was a former resident of Liberty living in the Hardin area the past year. She was a sophomore at Hardin High School.

Survivors include her parents, Charles and Ruby Pitts of Hardin; sisters, Brandy Jackson of Oak Island, Shilah Brantley of Dayton and Cindy Evins of Sims; brother, Carl Evins of Hardin; and grandparents, Charles Pitts Sr. of Oregon and Joan Evins of DeSoto.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

FREELAND E. ‘BUCKY’ RAWSON

Freeland E. "Bucky’’ Rawson, 69, of Jacksonville died Aug. 29, 2000 at Twin Oaks Nursing Home.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Shiloh Baptist Church in San Augustine with burial at Shiloh Cemetery under the direction of Wyman Roberts Funeral Home in San Augustine.

A native of San Augustine, he lived in Jacksonville several years and was a retired school district maintenance worker.

Survivors include daughters, Angela Rawson and Amanda Rawson, both of Washington state; son, Christopher Rawson of Washington state; and sisters, Geraldine Lee of DeSoto, Glendel Dixon of Coppell, Mozelle Brown of Dallas, Evanell Shepherd of Pflugerville and Wanda Mathis of Plano.

RITA JEAN SIRMONS SHEFFIELD

Rita Jean Sirmons Sheffield, 39, of Spurger died Aug. 29, 2000 at Memorial Hermann Baptist Beaumont Hospital.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Jasper with burial at Beech Creek Cemetery in Spurger under the direction of Riley Funeral Home in Woodville. Visitation was Wednesday at the funeral home.

A native of Kountze, she lived in Spurger most of her life and was the chief deputy tax collector for Tyler County.

Survivors include her husband, Lawayne Sheffield of Spurger; son, Joey M. Sheffield of Spurger; daughter, Magen R. Sheffield of Spurger; parents, Robert and Dorothy Sirmons of Spurger; brother, Calvin Sirmons of Spurger; and sister, Theresa Patterson of Jasper.

DORTHA SIMPSON

Dortha Simpson, 70, of Liberty died Aug. 28, 2000 at Kingwood Hospital in Houston.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Allison Funeral Service in Liberty with burial at Hardin Chapel Cemetery in Hardin. Visitation will be from noon to 9:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A native of Idabel, Okla., she lived in Liberty several years and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Bob Haltom of Liberty; sons, Ernest Perkins of Louisiana and Kenneth Perkins and Dale Simpson, both of New York, N.Y.; daughters, Rita Sanders of Romayor and Patsy Alford of Liberty; brothers, C.C. Measles of Moss Hill and Milford Measles of Madisonville; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

RAY SHELTON SPIKES

Ray Shelton Spikes, 59, of California died May 7, 2000 in California.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Snider Funeral Home in DeQuincy, La. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

A native of Bancroft, La., he lived in areas in the United States as well as Germany, Australia, Japan and the Philippines and California several years. He was employed with the Food and Drug Administration in Los Angeles and retired from the U.S. Army and Air Force.

Survivors include sons, Charles Byrd Jr. of Buna, and Stephen H. Spikes and Richard T. Spikes, both of Alhambra, Calif.; brother, Roy E. Spikes of Bancroft; sisters, Rosie Gilchriest of Nederland and Ruby Whittenberg of Anchorage, Alaska; and four grandchildren.

VASSO MENIS THOMAS

Vasso Menis Thomas, of Port Arthur died Aug. 30, 2000 at Park Place Medical Center.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in Port Arthur with burial at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Groves under the direction of Clayton-Thompson Funeral Home in Groves. An assembly service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday with a 10:30 procession at the church. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday with a Trisagion service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

A native of Turkey, she lived in Port Arthur 74 years and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughter, Fannie Thomas of Port Arthur; and son, Thomas A. Thomas of Port Arthur.

Memorials may be made to St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church, 3148 Thomas Blvd., Port Arthur, Texas 77642 or a charity of choice.
