Mary Siler Oats

Mary Siler Oats, 78, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died Sept. 1, 2004, in Marble Falls. Terrell Oats, Terrell Oats, her husband of 53 years, was by her side when she passed away peacefully at Northwood Health Care Center.
Born in Slaton, on Dec. 7, 1925, to Jesse Perry and Ona Sherwood Sile, she grew up in Lubbock, where she met and married Johnny Whittle in 1945. They had one son, John Whittle, who lives in Kingsland. In 1950, she married Terrell Oats and had one daughter, Linda Oats, who lives in Austin.
For 25 years, the Oats farmed cotton north of Idalou in Lubbock County. In 1975, they moved to their present home in Granite Shoals where they enjoyed retirement in the Texas Hill Country.
She was a wonderful mother and homemaker who willingly gave of herself to her family and supported them with all of her heart and soul. She was a person you liked being around, because she found humor and beauty in everyday things and truly enjoyed helping others. She was at peace with herself and God.
She also had a passion for music and musicals. You would hear music of the big band era or the popular music of the day if you paid her a surprise visit. She knew the songs and the artists and appreciated the beauty of harmony. She excelled at square dancing in her later years, but she could "cut a rug" in her youth.
Although she excelled at many things, but never learned to swim and was terrified of water all her life. But she learned to water ski when she was 40, then she mastered the slalom ski for good measure and taught others as well. Water skiing may not have been her favorite entertainment, but she cherished those good times at the lake with the family.
A good woman who will be missed by many, she was trustworthy, dependable, loyal, loving and kind; she was full of love, joy and peace -- successful in the truest sense.
Survivors include: Terrell Oats of Granite Shoals, her loving husband; Billy Siler and his wife Nadine of Lakewood, Calif., her brother; Linda Oats of Austin, her daughter; John Whittle and his wife Bonnie of Kingsland, her son; Amy Jimmies and her husband Raymon of El Paso, her granddaughter; Kirk Whittle and his wife Amy of Lubbock, her grandson ; and Stan Whittle and his wife Holly of Marble Falls, her grandson; and Hannah, Jacob and Jonah Jimenez of El Paso and Sydney and Alayna Whittle of Lubbock, her great-grandchildren.
Special thanks to everyone at the Northwood Health Care Center in Marble Falls who gave her much love, honor and dignity these last several years.
Memorials may be made in honor of Mary Oats to the Marble Falls Library or your charity of choice.
