Marie H. Coolman

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. -- Marie Hausman Coolman, 92, of Park Hill Adult Home, died Thursday morning, Sept. 3, 1998.

Mrs. Coolman is survived by one son, Duane ``Duke" Coolman of Virginia Beach; one daughter, Yvonne ``Bonnie" Dietrick of Rotterdam, N.Y.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pine St., Amsterdam. Betz, Rossie & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., is in charge.

Johnnie S. Gatlin

QUEENS, N.Y. -- Johnnie S. Gatlin, 33, died Aug. 29, 1998. A funeral will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Creswell. Rowsom Funeral Home, Columbia, N.Y., is in charge.

Robert B. Boothe

CHESAPEAKE -- Robert Busby Boothe, 82, of the 2500 block of Hanover Lane, died Sept. 20, 1998, in Portsmouth.

A native of Gates, N.C., he retired from the Supply Department of Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a member of Taylor Road Baptist Church and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Laura M. Boothe; two sons, Gary L. Boothe and Randy M. Boothe and his wife, Robin, of Portsmouth; a sister, Elsie Bateman of North Carolina; and four grandchildren, Heather, Adam, Matt Pearson and Laura Gail Boothe.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens by Dr. Mel Kunkle. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, from 7 to 8 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Muriel H. Downs

CHESAPEAKE -- Muriel Hamilton Downs, 62, of the 500 block of Southfield Drive, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, in a Norfolk hospital after recent surgery.

Mrs. Downs was born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan, Canada, and was the daughter of the late Minnie and Henry Hamilton of Tidsale. She was predeceased by a beloved brother-in-law, Howard Kidney. She was employed for 27 years with Crestar Bank and was the administrative assistant to the chairman of the board. She was involved in the volunteer efforts at Crestar's Student Gallery and the Crestar/Farm Fresh Golf Classic. She was a member of Norview Baptist Church, Norfolk, and also a member of the Oceanview Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband, Vincent ``Gene" Downs; two sisters, Gladys ``Bobbie" Calton and her husband, Bill, of Gainesville, Fla., and Florence Kidney of Tisdale; one brother, Boyd Hamilton and his wife, Elsie, of Key West, Fla. Muriel will be lovingly missed by her 11 nieces and nephews, as well as a host of special friends and neighbors.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel, followed by a memorial service at 7 p.m. conducted by the Rev. Mitchell Harrison in the chapel. A reception will follow at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Gaffney in Chesapeake. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens.

Roland D. Holland Sr.

CHESAPEAKE -- Roland D. Holland Sr., 80, of the 4000 block of S. military Highway, died Sept. 18, 1998, in a local hospital.

Born in Nansemond County, Va., he was retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Sheet Metal Shop with 28 years of service. He was a member of New Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, Portsmouth.

Survivors include his wife, Velma E. Holland; six daughters, Gloria Bly, Sheila Scott, LaWanda Sessoms of Chesapeake, Cynthia Green of Portsmouth, Corinthia Hamlin of Virginia Beach and Coressa Williams of Temple Hills, Md.; four sons, Roland D. Holland Jr. of Portsmouth, Dennis R. Holland, Daniel L. Holland and Gilbert Holland, all of Chesapeake; one sister, Jean Hunter of Chesapeake; an aunt, Helen Mitchell of Suffolk; 30 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his daughter, Eunice J. Bolden, and his grandson, Roland D. Holland III.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at New Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Milton R. Blount. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, will begin at noon today. The body will be taken to the church at noon Wednesday.

Helen C. Kindley

CHESAPEAKE -- Helen C. Kindley, 79, of the 1100 block of Porter St., died Sept. 20, 1998, in Chesapeake.

A native of Norfolk, she was a homemaker and the widow of Walter B. ``Pete" Kindley. She was a member of St. Matthews Catholic Church in Virginia Beach.

Survivors include one sister, Marion Harrell and her husband, Warren, of Chesapeake; two nephews, Tommy Harrell and Douglas Kindley, both of Portsmouth; and two nieces, Earline Bowden and Joan Capps, both of Chesapeake.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Riverside Memorial Park, Norfolk, by Father Timothy Drake. Visitation will be today from 7 to 8 p.m. at Francis A. Gay Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel. The family will assemble at 2004 Ardmore Ave., Chesapeake, prior to the service on Wednesday.

Lester L. Roberts Jr.

CHESAPEAKE -- Lester Leroy ``Les" Roberts Jr., 64, of the 4000 block of Hawksley Lane, died Sept. 19, 1998, at his residence.

A native of Port Arthur, Texas, he was a chief design engineer at SupShip Portsmouth USN. He was founder of the local chapter of National Civilian Managers Association (NCMA) and a Methodist. He was predeceased by his wife, Dolores Wynona Lockard Roberts.

Survivors include one daughter, Catherine Roberts Mowery of Portsmouth; one son, Lester Leroy Roberts III of Indianapolis, Ind.; two sisters, Barbara McMahon of Nederland, Texas, and Sandra Purgahn of Lafayette, La.; three brothers, Curtis Conrad Roberts of Port Neches, Texas, Larry D. Roberts of Lakeland, Fla., and Donald L. Roberts of Sarasota, Fla.; four grandchildren, Roy and Rachel Roberts and Timothy and Patrick Mowery.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, by the Rev. Donald L. Roberts. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Nannie M. Sculthorpe

CHESAPEAKE -- Nannie ``Nancy" Maude Sculthorpe, 64, of the 1900 block of St. Brides Road, West, died Sept. 20, 1998, in a local hospital.

Mrs. Sculthorpe was born in Gretna, Va., to Mr. Elbert W. Rowland of Chesapeake and the late Mrs. Lula Maude Rowland. She was the wife of the late Joseph B. Sculthorpe, and a member of Grace Baptist Temple.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Fernandez of Peach Tree City, Ga.; two sons, Joseph Ray Sculthorpe of Hyattsville, Md., and William ``Bill" Elbert Sculthorpe of Chesapeake; a sister, Mattie Vaughn of Chesapeake; and seven grandchildren.

A funeral will be officiated by the Rev. Clark Mahoney in the Indian Creek Baptist Church on Indian Creek Road, Chesapeake, at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Twiford Colonial Chapel, Great Bridge, Chesapeake.

Clara P. Wattengel

CHESAPEAKE -- Clara Mildred Pollard Wattengel, 77, of the 2400 block of Haywood Ave., died Sept. 20, 1998, in Chesapeake.

A native of Gulfport, Miss., she was retired from Lockheed Aircraft Company and a member of Disciples of Christ Church, of Sun Valley, Calif. She was the widow of Charles James Wattengel.

Survivors include one son, James Wattengel and his wife, Estela, of Sao Paulo, Brazil; two sisters, Dorothy Pollard and Martha J. Wright and her husband, Ossie Wright, all of Chesapeake; two grandchildren, Christopher Wattengel of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Adriana Wattengel of Boston, Mass.; one niece, Susan Penick of Chesapeake; and two nephews, John Wright and March Hathcock of Gulfport, Miss.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Francis A. Gay Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel, by the Rev. John B. Haynes Sr. Burial will be in Biloxi, Miss. Visitation will be today from 7 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Portlock United Methodist Church, 779 Redstart Ave., Chesapeake, Va. 23324.

Doris R. Welsh

CHESAPEAKE -- Doris R. Welsh, 72, of the 700 block of Bloom Ave., died peacefully among family in her home on Monday, Sept. 21, 1998. She was a native of Norfolk and a faithful member of Fairmount Park Methodist Church.

She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Charles T. Welsh; her mother, Lottie R. Kight; two daughters and their husbands, Linda and Carl Hall and Pam and Eddie Abrams; four grandsons, Clay and Carl Hall and Brett and Grant Abrams; and one sister and her husband, Barbara and John Faircloth. She was predeceased by her father, Alonzo B. Kight.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Sentara Hospice Program, No. 8 Koger Executive Center, Suite 201, Norfolk, Va. 23502.

Willie E. Daniels Jr.

NORFOLK -- On Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, at Sentara Bayside Hospital, Willie Edward Daniels Jr. returned home to our father.

Willie Edward Daniels Jr., ``Bird," was born Oct. 16, 1950, in Norfolk County to the proud parents of the late Willie Edward Daniels Sr. and Mitilda Nelle Daniels.

He was baptized at First Baptist Church of Campostella. He attended Campostella Junior High and Booker T. Washington High School. He was employed by the City of Norfolk for 23 years.

Willie is survived by his fiancee, Austine Lawrence; four children, Regina, Marlon, Misheia and Quaran Lawrence, all of Norfolk; a brother, Robert E. Daniels of Chesapeake; three sisters, Mary E. Daniels of Chesapeake and Sheilda M. Valentine and Phyllis E. Wilson of Norfolk; four grandchildren; a host of loving nieces and nephews; friends; and a special friend. He was predeceased by two sisters, Alberta G. Parker of Chesapeake and Marion Carney of Portsmouth.

The funeral will be conducted at noon Wednesday in First Baptist Church, Campostella, by the Rev. Harold Cason. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. The family will receive friends for remembrance and visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. today at P.G. Thomasson Funeral Services Inc. At other times the family will receive friends at 812 E. 29th St., Norfolk, and 901 Goff St., Apt. 156, Norfolk.

Diane Gillus

NORFOLK -- Diane Gillus, 39, of the 3500 block of Mangrove Ave., died Sept. 19, 1998, in Virginia Beach.

A native of Norfolk, she was a nurse at St. Mary's Infant Home and a member of Norfolk Deliverance Center.

Survivors include one daughter, Monique White; one son, Dominique White; her mother, Ruth Martin; two sisters, Queenie Turner and Pamela White; one brother, Nathaniel Turner, all of Norfolk; one grandchild, Dajah Monet White of Virginia Beach; and nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Norfolk Deliverance Center, Norfolk, by Elder Flyth. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the residence of Ruth Martin, 7035 Sewells Point Road. The procession will leave the residence at 10:15 a.m. Thursday. E.A. Hughes Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

MadDalene Grimes

NORFOLK -- MadDalene Grimes of the 7400 block of Hughart St., died Sept. 20, 1998, in DePaul Medical Center. Funeral arrangements are pending. Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk, is in charge.

Adeline James

NORFOLK -- Adeline James of the 1000 block of Willingham St., died Sept. 17, 1998. A funeral will be held at Graves Funeral Home on Wednesday.

William L. Pittman

NORFOLK -- William Louis Pittman of the 3100 block of Strathmore Ave., died Sept. 18, 1998.

Born in Enfield, N.C., he was a presser at Compeco Cleaners and a member of Basilica of St. Mary Immaculate Conception Church, Norfolk.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Bryant Pittman of Norfolk; two daughters, Betty Veronica Pittman of Norfolk and Annette Pittman of Frederick, Va.; two sisters, Mary Pittman of Washington, D.C., and Evelyn Scott of Enfield; two brothers, Robert Wheeler and Darnell Pittman, both of Enfield; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at noon Wednesday at Basilica of St. Mary Immaculate Conception Church by Monsignor Walter Barrett. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. The remains will be ready for viewing today at 3:30 p.m. The family will assemble at the residence at 11 a.m. for the procession. Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is in charge.
