Roger Newman

KILL DEVIL HILLS -- Roger Dale Newman, 54, died Sept. 17, 2001. Born in Baltimore, Md., he was a son of the late Dale Eugene and Elizabeth White Newman and a Navy veteran of the Vietname War. He retired from the National Guard and was a member of Tucker Swamp Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Jesse Newman of Shawnee, Kan.; two sisters, Patricia N. Pritchard of Wellington, Kan. and Susan N. Blount of Kill Devil Hills; a brother, John Newman of Manteo; and several aunts, uncles, and many other family members. He was predeceased by a son, Roger Dale Newman Jr.; and a brother, Walker Newman.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, Va., with the Rev. Steve Bradshaw officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Harold R. Sadler

WHISPERING PINES -- Harold Rudolph Sadler died Sept. 10, 2001. He was buried at 3 p.m. Sept. 14, 2001, in the family cemetery on The Heritage. Boles Funeral Home was in charge.

Laura Vaughan

AHOSKIE -- Laura Vaughan, 82, of the 900 block of E. First St., died Sept. 15, 2001. A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Calvary Baptist Church. Hunter's Funeral Home is in charge.

Margaret J. McEntee

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Margaret William Jordan McEntee, 79, passed away Monday, Sept. 10, 2001.

Mrs. McEntee was of the Protestant faith and was a member of the McDonald's Breakfast Club. Margaret was a devoted military wife and returned to Birmingham in the early 90s. She was a former 34-year resident of Norfolk. Margaret touched the lives and hearts of many, especially those who shared her love for animals.

Mrs. McEntee is survived by her husband of 47 years, Joe L. McEntee; a brother, Ewell Jordan; two sisters, Brenda Jordan and Lola Mae Hofer; other relatives, Pat McEntee and Tricia Kiedinger; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

A memorial service for Mrs. McEntee will be announced at a later date. The family requests contributions and memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation or your local animal shelter or society. Angwin Mortuary Center's Birmingham Chapel is handling arrangements.

Helen B. Bundick

CHESAPEAKE -- Helen Bell Bundick, 86, of the 1300 block of 19th St., died Sept. 3, 1998, in Chesapeake.

She was a native of Norfolk and the widow of Elmer James Bundick. She was a retired secretary from the American Auto Association of Washington, D.C., and a member of First Baptist Church, Orlando, Fla.

Survivors include her brother, Willis H. Bell Jr. and his wife, Martha, of Chesapeake; three nieces, Carolyn Steel, Shirley Wrenn and Janice Smith; and four nephews, the Rev. Bruce Warrington, Martin Bell, Willis H. Bell III and Richard W. Bell.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Graham Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel. The burial will be private. The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately after the service.

Junious G. Meeks

CHESAPEAKE -- Junious Guy Meeks, 63, of the 300 block of Gracie Road, died Sept. 2, 1998. A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, is in charge.

Daniel J. Willis

CHESAPEAKE -- Daniel J. ``Danny" Willis, 30, passed away Sept. 3, 1998. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach.

Helen M. Carroll

NORFOLK -- Helen Monday Carroll, 89, died Sept. 2, 1998.

A native of Conemaugh, Pa., she was the widow of Raymond J. Carroll. She was retired from the Virginia Beach School System and served in the Army Nurses Corps from 1943-1946. She was a director of Cadet Nurses where she worked at the Chief Nurses office and was a visiting nurse in the Norfolk School System. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Alpha Delta Kappa Fidelis Alpha and the Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include her brother, D.H. ``Bill" Monday of Johnstown, Pa.; and many loving relatives and dear friends.

A funeral will be noon Saturday at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, by Pastor Gaynor C. Shepherd. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Samuel L. Colley

NORFOLK -- Samuel L. Colley, 51, died Sept. 2, 1998, in a local hospital.

Mr. Colley was a native of Norfolk and was preceded in death by his parents, Alden R. and Ruth E. Colley, and a brother, Alden Colley Jr.

He is survived by three sisters, Phyllis Smith of Hopewell, Va., Mildred Nida, recently of New Orleans, and Shirley and husband, Ted R. Nobles, of Norfolk; and a brother, Howard D. Colley and wife, Peggy, of Richmond. Sam is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends.

The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. today in Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Rosewood Memorial Park by the Rev. Steve Cronn.

Eric A. Jones

NORFOLK -- Eric Anthony Jones of the 200 block of W. 35th St. died Sept. 1, 1998, at his residence. Arrangements are pending with Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel.

Helen H. Martin

NORFOLK -- Helen Harrell Martin died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at Harbour Pointe Medical Centre.

She was born July 4, 1931, in Eure, N.C., to James Arthur Lang and Lilly Venell Umphlett. She was married to William Martin of Ohio. Mrs. Martin worked as a waitress in the Tidewater area, notably 14 years at Moi's Chinese in Portsmouth.

She is survived by a sister, Mary Gonsorchik of Baltimore and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Harbour Pointe.

Marcelino F. Nobles
NORFOLK -- Marcelino Fernandez Nobles, 86, of Norfolk, died Sept. 2, 1998, in Sentara Nursing Center.
He was born in San Narciso, Zambales Philippines, on April 6, 1912. Mr. Nobles was a USAFFE World War II survivor of the Bataan Death March in the Philippines. He was an active member of the Senior Citizen UIAT and the Fil-Am Bayanihan of Tidewater.

He is survived by his wife, Procesa C. Nobles; children, Aurora L. Aquintey and husband, Pete, of Virginia Beach, Alicia P. Korte and husband, Jurgen, of Germany, Marvin P. Nobles and wife, Luz, of Virginia Beach, Nelson F. Nobles and wife, Evelyn, of Switzerland, and Marilyn N. Sanchez and husband, Victor Jr., of Virginia Beach; stepson, Carlito Gambito and wife, Rebecca, of Virginia Beach; sisters, Carolina Salayon of California and Visitacion Achin and Adela Espiritu, both of the Philippines; and grandchildren, Arlene Aquintey Sevidal, Patrick and Trisha Aquintey, Jasmin Korte, Pamela, Jose Ric and Joyce Nobles, Celeste Maynard, Monique and Michael Sanchez.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday in Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, with Father Santiago C. Frias officiating. Entombment will follow in Princess Anne Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with a wake service at 7 p.m.

Stephen Orletsky

NORFOLK -- Stephen ``Steve" Orletsky, 86, died Sept. 3, 1998, at Thornton Hall Elder Care.

A native of Conemaugh, Pa., he was the son of the late John and Sophie Orletsky. He was retired after 44 years as a supervisor from People's Drug Store. He was a member of Miles Memorial United Methodist Church and the Methodist Men's Sunday School class.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Patterson Orletsky; a daughter, Sandra Orletsky of Charleston, W.Va.; a son, Richard Stephen and his wife, Patricia P. Orletsky, of Norfolk; two grandsons, Mark, Robert and his wife, Mary; three great-granddaughters, Rachel, Jillian and Stephanie; a brother, Walter Orletsky; two sisters, Elizabeth Klodisky and Helen Gucwa; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Miles Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Morris A. Bennett and the Rev. Aubrey D. Maye. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Woodlawn Funeral Home and Crematory from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today.

Euclid Wiggins

NORFOLK -- Euclid ``Sweetie" Wiggins of the 1500 block of Sinoe Place died Sept. 1, 1998, at Sentara Nursing Home in Norfolk. Arrangements are pending with Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel.

Herbert R. Chappell Sr.

PORTSMOUTH -- Herbert Ray Chappell Sr., 74, of the 5600 block of Craneybrook Lane, died Sept. 3, 1998.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel.

Ophelia C. Harris

PORTSMOUTH -- Ophelia Cherry Harris, 73, of the 900 block of London Blvd., died Aug. 30, 1998. A funeral will be noon today at New Mt. Olivett Baptist Church. Serenity Funeral Home is in charge.

Elsie H. Howard

PORTSMOUTH -- Elsie H. Howard, 76, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, in Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, La.

She retired from the Louisiana Department of Labor.

She is survived by three children, Joanne Pizzuto Stuart, C. Michael Pizzuto and Karleen York; a sister, Joyce Glass; six grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Margie R. Hudson and John L. ``Jack" Hudson.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. today in Olive Branch Cemetery by the Rev. W. Thomas Wood. Loving Funeral Home is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Greater Baton Rouge Chapter, 2142 Quail Run Drive, Baton Rouge, La. 70808.

Mary E. Simmons
PORTSMOUTH -- Mary Elizabeth Simmons of the 2700 block of Arcadia Ave. died Sept. 2, 1998, at Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa.
Born in Norfolk, she was a retired pipefitter for Portsmouth Naval Shipyard with more than 20 years of service. She was a member of Greater Metropolitan AME Zion Church in Norfolk.

The widow of Frank M. Simmons Sr., she is survived by her daughter, Renee L. Simmons; four sons, Frank M. Simmons Jr., Richard V. Simmons, Marshall S. Simmons and Alvin R. Simmons; a sister, Rose Kate Bowers; a brother, Henry Porter; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today in Hale Funeral Home. A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in the Greater Metropolitan AME Zion Church, Brambleton Ave., Norfolk, by the Rev. G. Bernard Crawford. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Saturday for the procession to the church.

``Toby" Stephens
PORTSMOUTH -- ``Toby" Stephens, 65, died Aug. 26, 1998, in his residence. Mr. Stephens was a professional actor performing in local dinner theaters.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Andrews Methodist Church, 5615 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, is handling arrangements.
