Blanche A. Allen

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Blanche A. Allen, 93, of the 1600 block of Old Donation Parkway, died Sept. 3, 1998.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Grant and Amity Allen of Virginia Beach; her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Burton Bailey of Olalla, Wash.; five grandchildren, Scott, Christopher and Meredith Allen of Colorado, Paul Bailey of Seattle, Wash., and Susan Gay of Tacoma, Wash.; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held in Malden, Mass., on Tuesday. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, is handling local arrangements.

Ralph F. Harris

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Ralph F. Harris, 88, of the 4900 block of Farrington Drive, died Sept. 3, 1998.

Born in Chase City, Va., he was a retired mechanic for Sheller-Globe Corp. and a longtime member of the Cavalier Hunt Club. He was predeceased by his wife, Sylvia Quesinberry Harris, three brothers and one sister.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Meals on Wheels, the Bayside Volunteer Rescue Squad or make a visit to an elderly shut-in.

Charles D. Haverty

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Charles Dorsey Haverty, 71, died Sept. 2, 1998, in a local hospital.

Born in Princess Anne County, Va., he was a charter member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Norfolk. Mr. Haverty was a U.S. Navy Seabee for 10 years during which time he served in World War II on Tinian Island and during the Korean War in Thule, Greenland. He served 21 years in the National Guard 29th Division and 111th Field Artillery where he received the Bronze Star. He also retired from the Hampton Roads Horticultural Research Station after 40 years of service.

Mr. Haverty was a model boat craftsman and miniature carousel builder. His models have been on display in numerous east coast museums including the local Mariner's Museum and the 24th Street Coast Guard Station. They have also been featured in numerous magazines.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette S. Haverty; a daughter and son-in-law, Betty Kaye and Brad Schomburg of Chesapeake; two sisters, Beatrice Woodhouse of Norfolk and Nelly Perry of Georgia; and three brothers, John R. Haverty of Hawaii, Robert P. Haverty of North Carolina and James N. Haverty of Virginia.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Timothy Evangelical Lutheran Church by the Rev. Dr. Sidney K. Nelson. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. today at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Timothy Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Mary Jane Kunhardt

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Mary Jane Kunhardt, 78, passed away Aug. 30, 1998, at Atlantic Shores Retirement Center.

Born Sept. 17, 1919, in Seattle, Wash., she lived in Seattle until marrying U.S. Naval Commander Robert M. McKellar, whom she lost to cancer at the age of 35. She had two children by Mr. McKellar, Markey M. McKellar, who now resides in Roanoke, Va., and Kristine P. Hill, who resides in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She remarried at age 37 to George S. Allman and at age 41 gave birth to David Lee Kunhardt, formerly David Lee Allman, of Virginia Beach. She divorced at age 42 and worked as a single mom, supporting three children for 10 years. At age 52, she married retired U.S. Naval Commander Robert M. Kunhardt, who coincidently relieved CMDR McKellar of submarine duty during World War II so that he could marry Mary Jane. Bob and Mary Jane were happily married for 25 years before he passed away last May. They both enjoyed retired life enormously and traveled worldwide. They also enjoyed boating, golf and bridge.

Mary Jane was a marvelous cook, interior decorator and gardener. She had a knack for organizing social events. She loved people.

Most of all, she was a tremendously loving person who cared deeply for her children. She will be missed for her smile and her way of always looking for the bright side of life.

She is survived by her one brother, Hank Owen of Wilmette, Ill.; three children, already mentioned, as well as two stepchildren, Lynn K. Krall of Rockville, Md., and Robert M. Kunhardt Jr. of Wilmington, N.C.; and nine grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. John the Apostle Catholic Church by Father Dwight Schraeder. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of flowers at the service and/or donations to the American Cancer Society. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Thomas H. Lyon Sr.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Thomas H. Lyon Sr., passed away on Sept. 3, 1998, in his residence.

Mr. Lyon was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. He was a retired chemist with Virginia Power and a Navy veteran who served in World War II.

Survivors include his loving wife, Mary Hall Lyon; one son, Dr. Thomas H. Lyon Jr. and his wife, Marie, of Winter Garden, Fla.; one daughter, Cynthia Blankenship and her husband, James W., of Virginia Beach; one sister, Mary Stewart of Spotsylvania County, Va.; one aunt, Lotus Lyon of Waxhaw, N.C.; several nieces and nephews; and five grandchildren, Holly and Jesse Lyon, and Jimmy, Stephen and Philip Blankenship.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Southlawn Memorial Park, Petersburg, Va. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday in Kellum Funeral Home, Pleasant Hall Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Katie P. Privott

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Katie Powell Privott, 88, of the 900 block of LeCove Drive, died Sept. 2, 1998.

Born in Berkley, Va., she was a member of St. Brides Episcopal Church, Chesapeake. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Hillery Privott Jr.

Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Ann Daugherty and her husband, Phillipe, of Virginia Beach; a granddaughter, Debbie Cooke of Virginia Beach; a grandson, David Daugherty of Waldorf, Md.; and four great-grandchildren, Danielle Daugherty and Amanda Daugherty, both of Waldorf, and Corey Neil Cooke and Kyle Evan Cooke, both of Virginia Beach.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Riverside Memorial Park, Norfolk, by Father William C. Hoffman. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, Kempsville Road, Chesapeake, and at the residence at all other times.

Leroy Roberson

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Leroy Roberson, 78, of Virginia Beach, passed away Sept. 3, 1998, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Washington, N.C., he was self-employed as an electrical contractor for many years. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of Kempsville Church of Christ and was always willing to serve in whatever capacity he was needed. Besides his family and church, his greatest passion in life was his golf.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Marie Roberson; two children, Ken Roberson and Brenda Wray, along with four grandsons. He is also survived by one brother, James Roberson of California; three sisters, Audrey Edwards of Norfolk, Muriel Gurganus of Richmond and Glennis Andreoli of Washington, N.C.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach. A funeral will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Randy Childress officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Mary B. Thorpe

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Mary B. Thorpe, 74, of the 500 block of Featherstone Court, died Aug. 31, 1998.

She was predeceased by her parents, Della Thorpe and Will Thorpe.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary E. Cofield; a son, Melvin Thorpe; two sisters, Mattie Dozier and Bertha Eskridge; two brothers, Henry Thorpe and Rufus Thorpe; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral will be at noon Saturday at Morning Star Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, by the Rev. Dr. C.H. Williams. There will be a viewing from noon to 3 p.m. today at P.G. Thomasson Funeral Services Inc. There will be no viewing at the church.

Virginia S. Williams

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Virginia S. Williams, 73, passed away Sept. 2, 1998, in a Suffolk hospital.

Born in Bethlehem, N.C., she was co-owner of Central Radio Co. Inc. and a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. She was a volunteer at DePaul Hospital for many years.

The widow of Hal T. Williams Sr., she is survived by two daughters, Bonnie L. Helmrick and her husband, Floyd K. Helmrick, of Livermore, Calif., and Robin L. Eldredge and her husband, Michael R. Eldredge, of Chesapeake; a son, Hal T. Williams Jr. and his wife, Marcia A. Williams, of Chesapeake; two sisters, Elizabeth Askew and her husband, Allen, of Eure, N.C., and Louise Anderson and her husband, E.W. ``Wiley" of Suffolk; a brother, Lewis Stokes of Ahoskie, N.C.; four grandchildren, Bradley M. Williams and his wife, Debra, of Virginia Beach, Amy M. Williams and her fiance, Dr. Seth Kimmelman, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Ryan Eldredge and Morgan Eldredge, both of Chesapeake; two great-grandchildren, Bradley Williams Jr. and Dallas Williams, both of Virginia Beach; and two aunts, Helen Willoughby of Ahoskie, N.C., and Thelma Odom of Tyner, N.C.

A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel, by the Rev. Fred Braswell. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cornerstone Baptist Church, 1500 Sewells Point Road, Norfolk, Va. 23502.

David L. Jones

SUFFOLK -- David L. Jones, Petty Officer, U.S.N., retired, 45, died Sept. 2, 1998.

David, a native of Sulphur Springs, Texas, served four years with the U.S. Marines prior to joining the Navy and was a veteran of Vietnam and the Persian Gulf wars. He was a member of the VFW. An avid camper and hiker, he was also a member of the Riptide Square Dancers and the Swinging Dutchmen Square Dancers of Holland, Va. He was well known for his love of animals. David was employed as a maintenance technician with Suburban Propane in Courtland, Va., and was a member of South Quay Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Myers Jones of Suffolk; three daughters, Jennifer Summers and her husband, Clayton, Rebecca Jones, all of Norfolk, and Lorraine Jones of California; three stepsons, Mike Myers and his wife, Rose, Mitch Myers and his wife, Wendy, all of Suffolk, and Dan Myers and his wife, Nancy, of Franklin; six grandchildren, Kristen Myers, Melissa Myers, Joey Stephenson, Jeff Myers, Mark Myers and Morgan Myers.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, by the Rev. Louis Venable. Burial will be in Beaver Dam Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at 7 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home and suggests that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Ruth Petty, 116 Southampton Road, Franklin, Va. 23851.

Helen M. Mays

SUFFOLK -- Helen McClenny Mays, 68, of the 2900 block of Deer Path Road, died Sept. 3, 1998, at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital.

She was a native of Nansemond Co., Va., a homemaker, and the widow of Oscar Ernest Mays. She was a member of Bethel Assembly of God Church, where she was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class. She was the daughter of the late Clayton R. and Ella Mae Turner McClenny.

Survivors include daughters Barbara Ann Mays of Statesville, N.C., Linda Jean Mays of California and Doris Lee Meacham of Jacksonville, Fla.; a son, Howard Earl Mays of Suffolk; two grandchildren; two sisters; and four brothers.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hill Funeral Home by the Rev. William Hawkins. Interment will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Lewis A. Wynn

SUFFOLK -- Lewis Andrew Wynn, 77, of the 2100 block of Georgia Ave., died Aug. 31, 1998. A funeral will be noon Saturday at New First Baptist Church. Crocker Funeral Home is in charge.
