Mrs. Rose Salmon Wright
October 2, 1925 - May 13, 2004
Mrs. Rose Salmon Wright, 78, of South Hill died Thursday May 13, 2004 in Community Memorial Healthcenter. She was a retired employee of Burlington Industries and the widow of Bunyan Mabry and Robert Wright .
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Frances M. and John C. Connell of South Hill, three grandsons; John C. Connell, Jr. of South Hill, Paul A. Connell of Baskerville and Barry N. Connell of Richmond, five great grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren, two nieces Janice Lovelace of Mechanicville and Gloria D. Cridlin of Richmond, a nephew Marvin Myrick of Sanford, NC. and a devoted friend Aubrey Toombs of Union Level. She was also predeceased by a sister Sadie S. Hester.
A funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 2:00 P.M. in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment to follow in Crestview Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at the funeral home and at all other times at the home of her daughter Frances at 137 Sunset Lane, South Hill. Memorial contributions may be made to the Southside Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 546, South Hill, Va. 23970.

Mrs. Artie Hayes Crowder
March 6, 1914 - May 16, 2004
Mrs. Artie Hayes Crowder, age 90 of Lawrenceville and Chesterfield, died Sunday May 16, 2004 at Lucy Corr Village in Chesterfield. She was a retired Dixon Dress Company employee and the widow of Jesse N. Crowder. She is survived by four daughters Otellia Wilkin of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Willie Ann Spence and Juanita C. Floyd both of Lawrenceville and Louise C. Mitchell of Quinton; a son Thomas Earl Crowder of Chesterfield; a sister Effie Rogers and a brother B. H. Hayes both of Brodnax; two half sisters Helen Liles of Aurelia Springs, NC and Barbara Ezell of Brodnax; two half brothers James Hayes of Roanoke Rapids and Mack Hayes of South Hill; predeceased by one granddaughter and survived by twelve grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and six step grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Wednesday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:30 P. M. at the Funeral Home.

Mr. Harold William Kelley, Jr.
February 18, 1930 - May 23, 2004
Harold William “Bill” Kelley, Jr.,74, of Tanglewood Shores, Bracey, VA, died Sunday, May 23, 2004 at his residence after a courageous 2-year battle with lung cancer. Born in Boston, he had a distinguished career in the Air Force and the Civil Service. He was predeceased by his wife Mauda Mildred “Mickey” Kelley on December 27, 2003 and is survived by his son Gregory Bruce Kelley of Durham, NH, a grandson Paul Matthew of Lubbock, TX and four great grandchildren. The eldest of eight children, he is also survived by five brothers; Bob of Colorado, Jack and Dick of Georgia , George of Massachusetts and Barney of New Hampshire, two sisters, Betty of Massachusetts and Eleanor of Georgia. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory, South Hill, VA.
The family will also receive friends Thursday evening from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. at Purdy Memorial Chapel in Lee , New Hampshire. A graveside funeral service will be conducted Friday at 10:00 A.M. in Center Cemetery in Sandown, NH. . In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 422, South Hill, VA 23970.

Mr. Christopher Thomas Hite
October 25, 1981 - July 31, 2002
Christopher Thomas Hite, age 20 of South Hill, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002. He was an employee of Heritage Signs of Virginia in Dinwiddie. He is survived by his parents Geraldine E. and Willie E. Hite of South Hill, his brother Michael T. Hite of Chesapeake and his maternal great grandmother Laura Evans of Baskerville. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Friday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home with interment in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 P. M. at the Funeral Home.

Reverend Dr. Leonard Hays "Buddy" Miller
December 21, 1926 - March 20, 2004
Rev. Dr. Leonard Hays “Buddy” Miller, Chaplain (Col) U. S. Army, retired, age 77 of South Hill, died Saturday, March 20, 2004 at his residence. He was ordained in 1950 in Nashville, TN, earned his Bachelor of Arts from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, Master of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC, Master of Arts from Presbyterian School of Christian Education, Master of Education from VCU and Doctor of Ministry from Union Theological Seminary. He served many churches in Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia. He was a member of Union Level Baptist Church and served as Director of Missions for Concord Baptist Association from 1989 to 1996. He was a World War ll Navy veteran and served as a U. S. Army Chaplain in Germany, Vietnam and Japan for the remainder of his military service. He retired in 1977 with the rank of Colonel. He was the widower of Charlotte H. Miller and is survived by his wife Carol A. Miller; a son Leonard H. Miller, Jr. of Richmond and two step daughters Lisa G. Jones and Lori G. McDaniel both of South Hill. A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 P. M. Monday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home with interment in Arlington National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7:00 to 8:30 P. M. at the Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Union Level Baptist Church, 3579 Union Level Road, South Hill, VA 23970 or to the American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 422, South Hill, VA 23970.

Mrs. Mary Christain Rowley
November 27, 1921 - March 30, 2004
Mrs. Mary Christain Rowley, 82, of South Hill, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 in Community Memorial Healthcenter. She was a retired Executive Secretary at Burlington Industries and the widow of Arthur Ware Rowley.
She is survived by her daughter Mary Christain “Chris” Rowley of Portsmouth, Va. A graveside memorial service will be conducted Friday at 2:00 P. M. at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made to the Southside Rescue Squad, p.o. box 546, South Hill, VA. 23970 or to the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery fund, 828 Hite Street, South Hill, VA. 23970. Mrs. Ruby McCauley Griffith
February 21, 1927 - July 31, 2002
Mrs. Ruby McCauley Griffith, age 75 of Petersburg and formerly of South Hill, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002. She was the widow of Carlton Lewis Griffith, Jr. and is survived by a sister Gertrude McCartney of Waynesboro, an adopted son Roy Romesburg of Newport News, several nieces and nephews, several great nieces and nephews including Tina Eubank of Sutherland. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Saturday at Oakwood Cemetery in South Hill. The family will receive friends at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home in South Hill beginning at 1:00 P. M. Saturday.

Mr. Benjamin Harrison Johnson
January 18, 1927 - May 5, 2004
Mr. Benjamin H. “Pete” Johnson, age 77 of Boydton, died Wednesday, May 5, 2004. He was a Korean War Army veteran and a retired farmer. He is survived by two daughters Sarah Friedman and her husband Alan of Richmond and Cynthia Findley and her husband John of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Private arrangements by Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorial contributions may be made to the Buckhorn Volunteer Fire Department, 5972 Union Level Road, South Hill, VA 23970.

Mr. C. Comer Thompson
July 15, 1922 - May 9, 2004
Mr. C. Comer Thompson, 81, of Lunenburg Co. died May 9, 2004 at his residence. He was a U.S. Navy , WWII veteran having served as a 3rd Class Gunner’s Mate and involved in five battles in the Pacific aboard the USS-LST688, a Charter and Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 7166, South Hill, a member of Antioch United Methodist Church and the husband of 56 years to Ann B. Thompson.
Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter Patsy Clark of South Hill, three sisters; Fannie Sue Smiley of Emporia, Elizabeth “Betsy” Biggerstaff and Virginia Creedle both of South Hill, five grandchildren Sharon Jaimes (pronounced Hi-Must) of Detroit. Michigan, Scott Sharber and Jamie Thompson of Lunenburg, Chris Thompson of LaCrosse and Chad Tudor of South Hill and one great grandchild Katelyn Sharber .
He was predeceased by a son C. Wayne Thompson.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 2:00 P. M. in Antioch United Methodist Church Cemetery, Lunenburg Co., with VFW military honors. The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home. The family request memorial considerations to Community Memorial Hospice, P.O. Box 90, South Hill,. 23970 or Antioch UMC Basement Fund , 2575 South Hill Rd., Kenbridge, Va. 23944.

Arthur Carter Wells
July 3, 1916 - August 17, 2004
Mr. Arthur C. Wells, 88, of Highway #138, La Crosse died Tuesday, August 17, 2004 in the W. S. Hundley Annex. Mr. Wells was a retired farmer and the widower of Annie Carey Wells and Rachel E. Wells.
He is survived by his son Reverend A. C. Wells, Jr. and wife Mary of La Crosse, three grandchildren; Jonathan Wells , Dr. Chris Wells and wife Jenny, and Marianne C. Wells and a niece Barbara Estes Powell. He was predeceased by his daughter Linda Crank, a sister Thelma Estes and three brothers; Woodrow W., Lawrence S. and George M. Wells.
A funeral service will be conducted Friday at 2:00 P.M. in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at the funeral home.

Mr. Edward Wilkins "Pappy" Estes, Jr.
September 29, 1916 - August 18, 2004
Mr. Edward Wilkins “Pappy” Estes, Jr. of Mechanicville and formerly of Kenbridge died Wednesday, August 18th, 2004 in Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville. He was the widower of Maxine Martin Estes and is survived by his daughter Mary Lee Dickens of Mechanicsville and a son Edward W. Estes, lll and his wife Ann also of Mechanicsville, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday August 21, 2004 at 11:00 A. M. in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment to follow in the Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
