Samuel A. Williams
Samuel Addison Williams, 58, of 1202 Bethel Lane, Martinsville, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006, at his home.
He was born Jan. 29, 1948, in Henry County to James David Williams and Matilda Swanson Williams. His parents preceded him in death.
He retired from the Army after 20 years of service and was a Mason.
Surviving are two daughters, Sabrina S. Amos of Louisville, Ky., and Sandy M. Garcia of Berea, Ky.; three sisters, Emma Williams and Arlene Whitaker, both of Martinsville, and Frances Marie Hailey of Atlanta, Ga.; three brothers, Curtis E. Williams of Martinsville and James C. Williams, both of Martinsville and Robert Williams of Riverside, Calif.; a grandson; and nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be held 4 p.m. today at Hairston Funeral Home chapel.
The family will receive friends at the home of his brother, Curtis Williams, 1000 Bethel Lane, Martinsville.

Rufus J. Cooper
Rufus J. Cooper, 57, of 57 Oakgrove Park Lane, Bassett, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006, at his home.
Survivors include his mother, Ethel Cooper of Halfway Road, Martinsville.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete at Stanfield-Miller Funeral Home in Martinsville.

Paul Green
Paul Green, 95, of 3058 Halifax Road, South Boston, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2006, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Stanfield-Miller Funeral Home in Martinsville is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph T. Millner Sr.
DANVILLE -- A graveside service for Joseph Tyrone Millner Sr., 53, of 197 Bethel Court, Danville, who died Aug. 16, 2006, at INOVA Fairfax, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Waller family cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Millner was born in Pittsylvania County, on Sept. 14, 1952, to Clara Waller Millner of Pittsylvania County and the late Clyde Odell Millner. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a son, Joseph "Maine" Tyrone Millner Jr.
He retired from DuPont.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Jeanette V. Millner of the home; four sons, Anthony O. Hairston of Martinsville, Chevis Millner of Danville, and Shannon Wells and Rashod Wells, both of Greensboro, N.C.; four daughters, Clara M. Eggleston of Danville, Nakia M. Dickerson of Eden, N.C., Lakeisha M. Hairston of Martinsville and Brittany Wells of Greensboro; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Wendell Millner of Martinsville and Donnell Millner of Pittsylvania County; and a number of other relatives.

Ralpholene M. Moore
Ralpholene Martin Moore, 69, of Bassett, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006, at her home.
She was born March 29, 1937, in Henry, to Ralph Martin and Mary Elizabeth Whitlock Martin Nance Thompson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Wiley T. Nance.
She worked for Martinsville Theatre Corp.; operated Stone Theatre; and more recently worked at Stanleytown Baptist Children's Center.
Survivors are her husband, James Grady Moore of the home; a son, Randy Lee Moore of Bassett; two granddaughters; and one brother, Frankie M. Nance of Dillons Fork.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. today at Valley Drive Baptist Church.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Valley Drive Baptist with the Rev. Bobby Rakes and Pastor Greg Thomas officiating. Burial will be in the Old Center Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Bassett Funeral Service in Bassett is in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth D. Nelson
Kenneth Darryl Nelson, 46, of 625 Old Well Road, Spencer, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, at his home.
He was born in Martinsville on Dec. 27, 1959, to Hoyte Leon Nelson and Joy Hylton Nelson of Spencer. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Buddy and Helen Hylton and Holmes Nelson.
Nelson worked at Fieldcrest Mills for more than 20 years prior to its closing, and was working as a truck driver for Burgess Trucking Co.
He was a member and past deacon at Rich Acres Christian Church, and was a former member and deacon at Mayo Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, survivors are his wife, Lisa Roark Nelson of the home; three daughters, Chasity Nicole Nelson, Olivia Elizabeth Nelson and Shelby Page Nelson, all of the home; one sister, Sherri Dalton of Spencer; a brother, Hoyte L. Nelson Jr. of Spencer; his paternal grandmother, Pearl Nelson of Stuart; three nieces; and four nephews.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rich Acres Christian Church with Minister Tim Hunt and Dr. Dave Cochran officiating. Burial will be in the Mayo Baptist Church cemetery on Penn Store Road, Spencer.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Howell Funeral Home at Patrick Springs, and other times at the home of Shirley Roark, 22194 A.L. Philpott Highway, Spencer, and the home of his parents at 515 Old Well Road, Spencer.
Memorials may be made to: Rich Acres Christian Church Building Fund, 422 Mountain View Road, Martinsville, Va. 24112; or Mayo Baptist Church cemetery Fund, c/o Joy Nelson, 515 Old Well Road, Spencer, Va. 24165.

Ruby Nelson
The funeral for Ruby Dove Nelson, 89, of Fieldale, who died Aug. 17, 2006, was held Sunday at Pleasant Grove Christian Church with Minister George B. Harris officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bobby Nelson, Gary Ashburn, Cecil Spencer, Kaleb Jarrett, Ken Nelson and Jeff Nelson.
Arrangements were by Collins Funeral Services.

Charles K. Sparrow
Charles Kavanaugh Sparrow, 95, of 1308 Valley View Road, Martinsville, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
Sparrow was founder, president and manager of City Finance and Small Loan Corp. until retiring in 1975.
He was born in Martinsville, Dec. 13, 1910, to John Banister Sparrow and Gertrude Pamela Brown Sparrow. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Banks Sparrow; and a sister, Pamela Sparrow Williams.
He graduated from Danville Military Institute, where he was named "All Around Athlete." He was an alumnus of William and Mary College, where he was in the Seven Society (an honor society) and a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He also ran track and was a tennis player.
He served in the Army Medical Corps with the 192nd General Hospital in England during World War II. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Martinsville since 1921, where he had served as a deacon and Boy Scout leader; served 21 years as an active member of the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Co., and was a longtime member of the Martinsville Rotary Club, for which he was a Paul Harris fellow.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Kathryn Vaden Sparrow of the home; a daughter, Pamela Sparrow McCauley of Charlottesville; a son, Dr. Charles Kavanaugh Sparrow Jr. of Richmond; two granddaughters; and one stepgrandaughter.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of First Baptist Church of Martinsville with the Revs. Dennis Knight and John Fulcher officiating. Burial will be private.
Friends are being received at the home.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Blue Ridge Chapter of Virginia, 2728 Colonial Ave., Suite 2, Roanoke, Va. 24015, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Melvin E. Turner
Melvin Eugene Turner, 72, of 220 Fairview Drive, Bassett, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville following a brief illness.
Turner was owner and operator of Turner Custom Finishing at Bassett.
He was born in Bassett on Dec. 27, 1933, to Joseph Turner and Sally Hodges Turner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Turner.
He served in the Army and was a member of Fort Trial Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Nola Naff Turner of the home; a daughter, Deborah Turner Foley of Collinsville; a son, Eric Eugene Turner of Charlotte, N.C.; five sisters, Dorothy Lewis of Stanleytown, Kathleen Robertson and Virginia Wagoner, both of Fork Mountain, Betty Dillon of Bassett and Gaynell Naff of Henry; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fort Trial Baptist Church with Dr. Joey McNeill officiating. Burial will be in Mill Creek Baptist Church cemetery at Henry.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Fort Trial Baptist Church and other times at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Andy Foley, 274 Fox Chase Drive, Collinsville.
Memorials may be made to Fort Trial Baptist Church, 170 Oak Level Road, Stanleytown, Va. 24168.

John A. Willard
John A. Willard, 83, of Newport, N.C., a Patrick County native, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at his home.
He was born in the Elamsville area on Aug. 11, 1922, to Andrew Jackson Willard and Dovie Hall Willard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, John A. Willard Jr. and Donald Willard; a daughter, Linda Nettle; and a brother, James Hooker Willard.
He served in the Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict and retired with 20 years of service as a civil service employee with the motor pool at Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Base in North Carolina.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Maxine Willard of the home; a daughter, Mary Ducote of Newport; five sons, Jack Willard of San Antonio, Texas, Jim Willard of Atlantic Beach, N.C., and Ernest, Willie and Michael Willard, all of Newport; two sisters, Ruby Foley of Stuart and Lucy Willard of Fieldale; two brothers, Leroy Willard of Bassett and Willie Willard of Stuart; and 12 grandchildren.
The funeral was held July 28 at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, N.C. Burial was in Gethsemane Memorial Park in Newport.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 332 N. Lauderdale St., Memphis, Tenn., 38105.

Nathaniel Alcorn
Nathaniel Alcorn, 70, of 150 Parkway Drive, Martinsville, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2006, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Hairston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
