Regina G. Nelson
The funeral for Regina Lynn Gilley Nelson, 44, of Ridgeway, who died July 13, 2006, was held Tuesday at Highland Baptist Church. The Rev. David Nelson and Dr. Mike Hatfield officiated. Burial was at Roselawn Burial Park.
Pallbearers were Buren Pickurel, Bill Franklin, Greg Moye, Alvis Biggs, Billy Freeman, Charles Stowe, Mike Stowe and Page Arnold.
Arrangements were by McKee-Stone Funeral Services.

Barney E. Nolen
The funeral for Barney Elmo Nolen, 83, of Martinsville, who died Monday, July 17, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Smith River Church of the Brethren in Patrick County. The Revs. Kevin Powell and Luther Noel Hopkins will officiate. Burial will be in the Nolen family cemetery in Elamsville.
Visitation will be held at Bassett Funeral Service in Bassett from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday. At other times, friends will be received at the home of his wife, Thelma M. Nolen at 6694 Oak Level Road, Bassett, and also the home of his son, Johnny E. Nolen, 160 Kirk St., Martinsville.
Nolen was born in Patrick County on Jan. 30, 1923, to John A. Nolen and Lula May Baliles Nolen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Nicholas Marshall. He was first married to Vernie Irene Nolen, who survives and is the mother of the Nolen children.
He served in the Navy during World War II and was a member of American Legion Pannill Post 42 in Martinsville. He worked at Dupont for more than 33 years, and he was a member of the Martinsville Adventist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma Miles Nolen of the home; two sons, Johnny E. Nolen of Martinsville and Larry Nolen of Fieldale; two daughters, Joan Grogan and Cindy Mabe, both of Stoneville, N.C.; two stepsons, "June Bug" Miles and Wayne M. Miles, both of Bassett; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two brothers, John Roscoe Nolen of Collinsville and Lemuel A. Nolen of Martinsville; and three sisters, Annie Lou Harris and Hattie Mae Gilley, both of Ridgeway and Oma Lee Merricks of Martinsville.
Memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund of Seventh Day Adventist Church, P.O. Box 3969, Martinsville, Va. 24115, or the Martinsville Senior Citizens Group Transportation Program, P.O. Box 1329, Martinsville, Va. 24112.

Pauline H. Reynolds
The funeral for Pauline H. Reynolds, 74, of Bassett, who died Monday, July 17, 2006, at Morehead Memorial Hospital, Eden, N.C., will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bassett Funeral Service. Pastor Edwin Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Old Center Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Bassett Funeral Service from 7 to 9 p.m. today, and other times at the home of her daughter, Linda Foley, 72 Private Lane, Bassett.
She was born in Patrick County on March 20, 1932, to William Saunders Curtis Hodge and Mary Susan Bowman Hodge. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alton Reynolds; and a brother, Carson E. Hodge.
She had worked at the Bassett Chair plant and retired from Stanley Furniture Company.
Surviving are three daughters, Linda D. Foley and Patricia Ann Reynolds, both of Bassett, and Marie D. Solomon of Penhook; a son, Rufus Lee Deal of Bassett; three sisters, Mary Iris Setliff of Bassett, Velma Jean Webb of Stoneville, N.C. and Mary Magdelen Queen of Stokesdale, N.C.; five brothers, Curtis Thomas Hodge, Billie Richard Hodge and Roger Lee Hodge, all of Eden, N.C., David James Hodge of Danville and Robert Roscoe Hodge of Madison, N.C.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Richardson, retired city executive, dies at 85
Donald W. Richardson, 85, of 719 Beverly Way, Martinsville, died Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
He retired in 1981 after 26 years as MartinsvilleŐs water superintendent. During the years, he served on numerous water works boards and in 1973 received the Water Utility Man of the Year citation from the Virginia section of the American Waterworks Association. He also was presented the George M. Fuller award for outstanding contributions in his field.
In 1983, he assumed a part-time job as administrator for the Town of Ridgeway, the position he held for several years.
Born and reared in Pulaski, he left school to join the Navy during World War II, serving three years in Europe. In 1945, he returned home and finished high school. He joined the highway department in 1946 on a survey crew and soon was transferred to Martinsville, where he was named assistant to the resident highway engineer.
He joined the city in 1955 and became superintendent of water resources in 1960. During his career, he served on the Water Works Legislative Committee of the American Water Works Association and the Waterworks Advisory Committee for the Virginia Department of Health. He also was a member of the Water and Wastewater OperatorŐs Certification Board of Virginia, having been appointed for three consecutive terms by Govs. Linwood Holton, Mills Godwin and John Dalton. He also served four years as chairman of the board.
In addition, he was a member of the International Association of Boards of Certification for Operating Personnel in Water and Wastewater Utilities, a association that represented more than 70 boards.
In the past, he was instrumental in the organization of Little League and other youth athletic programs in Martinsville.
Richardson was a civic and church leader and held membership in a number of local organizations at his death.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete and will be announced by McKee-Stone Funeral Services.

Anne F. Smith
Anne Ford Smith, 57, of 916 Clarke Road, Martinsville, died Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at her home.
She was born in Altoona, Pa., to William Arthur Ford Sr. and Helen Ruth Snively Ford. They preceded her in death.
She was a 1967 graduate of Hollidaysburg (Pa.) High School and received an associate in arts design degree from Mt. Aloysius Junior College. She formerly worked as a receptionist for Drs. John Selman, Jack Eberhart and Steven Landau in Martinsville.
She was a member of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church where she had served as president of Forest Hills Women of the Church and as youth director. She also served as a leader in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. She was a former Charity League member and a member of the Lazy Quilters Red Hat Society.
Surviving are her husband, Mike Smith of the home; two daughters, Julie Metz Arnold of Martinsville and Megan Smith Bowen of Lynchburg; a son, Todd Metz of Roanoke; and one brother, William A. Ford Jr. of Abingdon, Md.
The funeral will be held at noon Friday at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church with the Revs. John Monroe and Larry House officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services and other times at the home.

Syble T. Clark
Syble Tatum Clark, 101, of Boaz Pond Road, Stuart, died July 16, 2006, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
She was born in Patrick County on March 25, 1905, to Miles and Mattie Clark Tatum. Other family members preceding her in death were her husband, Taylor Clark; two sisters, Mamie Patterson and Huldah T. Zigler; and six brothers, Ballard Tatum, Mallie L. Tatum, Elder Ollie Tatum, Noel M. Tatum, Royal L. Tatum and Robert E. Tatum.
She had been a member of Tatum Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church since 1942, where she was Mother of the Church and had served as clerk and treasurer.
Surviving are several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Tatum Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Manuel Jessup officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
A wake will be held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart. At other times friends may call at the home of a niece, Christine Johnson, 1070 Penn Store Road, Spencer.

Harold Draper
Harold Draper, 62, of 1005 Owens Road, Martinsville, died Monday, July 17, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
Hairston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Richard Flippen Sr.
The funeral for Richard Randell "Buddy" Flippen Sr., 69, of 167 Beechnut Circle, Sheffield Terrace, Ridgeway, who died Sunday, June 16, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Norris Funeral Services chapel. The Revs. Dale Reynolds and Jim Long will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today, and other times at the home.
Flippen was born in Martinsville on March 15, 1937, to Grover Samuel Flippen and Bernice Hairfield Hyrkas Flippen.
He retired after 34 years as a guard for DuPont. He was a member of the Goldwing Road Riders Association, the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department and Clearview Wesleyan Church.
Surviving are his wife, Lois Stanley Flippen of the home; a daughter, Denise Flippen Wheeler of Collinsville; a son, Richard Randell Flippen Jr. of Ridgeway; a brother, Grover O. Flippen of Bassett; half-brother, Markus Lavinder of Detroit, Mich.; and three grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Norris Funeral Services and Crematory.

James E. Goode
James Edward Goode, 87, of 808 Barrows Mill Road, Martinsville, died Monday, July 17, 2006, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Funeral arrangements will be made at Norris Funeral Services and Crematory.

Delcie B. Love
Delcie Bateman Love, 98, of Claudville, died Sunday, July 16, 2006, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart.
She was born in Patrick County on March 4, 1908, to William L. and Annie Joyce Bateman. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Gaston Love; two sisters, Mary Lou Smith and Oma Jessup; and a brother, Garnet Bateman.
She was a member of Hills Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons, James Love of Stuart, Jerry Love of Claudville and Ronnie Love of Roanoke; a daughter, Mary Frances Turner of Roanoke; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Lena Mae Beasley of Francisco, N.C.; one niece; and one nephew.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart with the Rev. Alan Vass and Pastor Randy Bartley officiating. Burial will be in Red Bank Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home for one hour before the service Wednesday.

Barney E. Nolen, 83, of Martinsville, died Monday, July 17, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.

The funeral for Regina Mae Turner, 48, of Martinsville, was held Monday at Mount Olive East Christian Church with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth David officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Curtis Preston, Ryndal Perkins, Tony M. Draper, Alonzo F. Turner, Michael Penn and Gregory Pilson.
Hines Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.
