CARTER

D'AMATO
Retired Army Command Sgt. Maj. Anthony D'Amato, 79, of Prince George, died Saturday, January 13, 2001, in John Randolph Medical Center. He was born in New York, N.Y., the son of the late John D'Amato and Philamenia Nappi. Command Sgt. Maj. D'Amato dedicated his life to serving his country. His military career spanned over three decades and included three wars. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and began his career with basic training at Camp Robinson in Arkansas. Following boot camp, he volunteered for airborne school. After earning his wings, he joined the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment in France. His team made the last combat jump of World War II into Wessel, Germany. He also saw combat duty in Korea and in Vietnam. D'Amato was one of the first enlisted men in the U.S. Army to attain E-9 rank. He held a variety of responsible positions during his extensive military career including: post sergeant major, Fort Belvoir, Va.; command sergeant major, USACDC, Ft. Belvoir; command sergeant major, Support Command, 1st Cavalry Division, Vietnam; command sergeant major, Southern European Task Force, Italy; command sergeant major, 1st Region, Army Air Defense Command, Fort Totten, N.Y.; command sergeant major, U.S. Army Engineer School, Ft. Belvoir; and command sergeant major, US Quartermaster School, Fort Lee, Va. In 1999, he was made a Distinguished Member of the Quartermaster Regiment. He was the recipient of the Legion of Merit with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal with three awards, the Good Conduct Medal with nine awards and proudly wore the Combat Infantryman's Badge. Following his retirement from the Army in 1976, he spent 15 years in civil service with the Defense Commissary Agency. After retiring from civil service, he continued to serve the Army by volunteering in the pharmacy at Kenner Army Health Clinic. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; three daughters, Teresa Howard of Naples, Fla., Deborah Schnoor of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Toni D'Amato-Teed of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; six grandchildren, Jessica Sholders, Alisha and Katie Howard, Ryan and Zach Schnoor, and Garrett Anthony Teed; a brother, Frank D'Amato of Clarksville, Tenn.; and a sister, Josephine Avella of Ozone Park, N.Y. A memorial service will be held in the Memorial Chapel, Ft. Lee, at 1 p.m. on Thursday, January 18. The interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery and will be private. The family is being served by the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.

DAVIS
Elizabeth Walls Davis, 82, of New Kent, died on Tuesday, January 16, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband Clyde Calvin Davis; and a grandson, James Wesley Davis. She was a retired elementary school teacher. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Clyde "Vin" and Catherine Davis of New Kent; a granddaughter, Amy E. Davis of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; grandson, Brian E. Davis of Richmond. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Vincent Funeral Home, West Point, Va. Burial private. The family will receive friends an hour before the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Rose Garden Memorial Cemetery Association, 7620 Davis Pond Road, West Point, Va. 23181 or to West Point Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, Inc., Box X, West Point, Va.

DOWNING
Elizabeth Healey Cutler Downing, a lifelong Virginia resident, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Thomas N. Downing; her son, Gordon Cutler, his wife, Jane and their two children, Elizabeth and Joseph; and her son, Nelson Cutler, his wife, Kathryn and their three children, Corydon, Nelson and Jonathan. Her first husband, Gordon B. Cutler; and her son, Porter H. Cutler predeceased her. Mrs. Cutler Downing, the daughter of Elizabeth and Joseph E. Healy, was born in Mathews County and was a graduate of St. Anne's School in 1941 and Sweetbriar College in 1945. She was a director of the Farmer's Bank of Mathews (now Bank of America), a member and chairman of the board of trustees of the Charles H. Taylor Memorial Hampton Public Library, a member of the Kecoughtan Literary Society and the Junior League of Hampton Roads. An avid golfer, she scored four holes-in-one over her playing career and was a member of the James River Country Club Women's Golf Association where she was a former club champion. A funeral service will be held at St. Johns Church in Hampton at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 18. Burial services will be private. The family asks that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are by the Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Avenue in Hampton.

GRAHAM
Carolyn Virginia Graham, 58, of Chester, died Monday, January 15, 2001. She was a native of Dunbar, Pa., and was born the daughter of the late Solon D. and Blanche R. Lowry. She worked at the McGuire VA Hospital for over 19 years. She is survived by her husband, Steve Graham; one son, Steve Graham and his wife, Michelle; one daughter, Kim Chase and her husband, Eric; seven grandchildren, Solon and Kiley Graham, and Cody, Joshua, Logan, Megan and Luke Chase; four sisters, two brothers, and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 19, at the Chesterfield Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son, with interment to follow in Bermuda Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday night from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Richmond Grace Brethren Church Building Fund, 2100 Cranbeck Road, Richmond, Va. 23235-3506.

GREENE
Mrs. Maylean Greene of Charles City departed this life January 13, 2001. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 17, 2001 at St. John Baptist Church, Charles City. She was the wife of Newsome Greene and they shared 65 years of marriage. Arrangements by Turner-Bland Funeral Home, Hopewell.

HALL
Martha Handley Hall, 79, of Richmond, formerly of Silver Spring, Md., widow of George Neil Hall, died Monday, January 15, 2001. She is survived by three brothers, Thomas, Marion and Frank Handley; a sister, Evelyn Eary; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hall was a member of A.A.R.P. and attended Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4:30 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Road, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Interment Mt. Vernon Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the building fund of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.

HANCOCK
Thomas R. Hancock died January 14, 2001. Surviving are his two sons, Geoffrey Hancock and Kevin Hancock; his mother, Ruth Hancock; three sisters, Linda Perry, Cynthia Hall and Deborah Shelton; two brothers, William R. Hancock Jr. and Dennis Hancock. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to Diabetes Research. Notice of services at later date.

HARRIS
Margaret Dalton Harris, 88, of Richmond, passed away December 31, 2000. She is survived by her daughter, Diane M. Ashton; a son, Brian W. Harris; and four grandchildren. A funeral service was held 2 p.m. Saturday, January 13, 2001, at the Providence Road United Methodist Church with interment following in the church cemetery. Arrangements were handled by the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad Street, Glen Allen, Va.

HAWKES

HUTCHINSON
The graveside service for Margaret Crowder Hutchinson, formerly of Richmond, will be held at Maury Cemetery on January 19 at 2 p.m. She died on November 26 in Safety Harbor, Fla., at age 81, and is survived by her husband, James H. Hutchinson of Palm Harbor, Fla.; a son, Ashby Bland Crowder Jr.; and a grandson, Ashby Bland Crowder III, both of Little Rock, Ark. Mrs. Hutchinson was preceded in death by Ashby Bland Crowder, her first husband; and by Mary Bishop Hughes and Lewis Coleman Hughes, her parents. A memorial service was held in the chapel of St. Mark Village, Palm Harbor, on December 11. Mrs. Hutchinson had been a member of McGuire Park United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, James River Woman's Club, treasurer of the Wayside Garden Club, and had served on the board of the Richmond Home for Ladies.

JAMES
George Watson James III, M.D., 82, died January 15, 2001 following a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Frances Van Doren James; three children, Frances Preston Cave, George Watson James IV, M.D., and William Herndon James and his wife, Pamela Owen James; eight grandchildren, Kimberly Reinhardt Gravatt, William Maury Cave, Christopher Boyd Cave, Jennifer Fontaine James, Jonathan Southall Cave, Brooke Van Doren James, Mason Southall James and Owen Michael James; and one great-granddaughter, Preston Reinhardt Gravatt, all of Richmond, Va. Dr. James was born in Richmond and graduated from the Thomas Jefferson High School in 1936, subsequently attending Washington & Lee University, graduating magna cum laude in 1940. He entered the MCV School of Medicine, graduating in 1943 and undertook internship at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass., returning to Richmond to complete his residency and thereafter entering the Army Medical Corps and U.S. Public Health Service through June of 1949. He joined the faculty at MCV in 1949 as a Markle Scholar and continued there over the next 50 years in research, teaching and clinical practice. He was appointed professor of medicine in 1984 and professor of medicine emeritus in 1993. For many years he was chairman of the Division of Hematology which he helped establish. He was a member of the Commonwealth Club and Willow Oaks Country Club. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at his residence. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Bon Air. Interment will follow at Hollywood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Forest View Rescue Squad.

JOHNSON
Mr. Paige Warren Johnson, 68, of Richmond, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond. He was a retired employee with the City Hall in Richmond and was a veteran of the Korean War. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Williams-Parksley Funeral Home in Parksley, Va.

LAYNE
Erven Franklin Layne, age 46, of Richmond, Va., died Sunday, January 14, 2001. He is survived by his son, Devin Layne; his mother, Ruby Layne Satterwhite; three sisters, Betty Layne Faulkner, Gloria Layne Atkins and Tammy Layne Smith; three brothers, Charles William Layne, Ricky Dean Layne and Tony Carl Layne; also ten nephews and six nieces. Remains rest at Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, and where funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Interment Dale Memorial Park.

MEREDITH
Grace Garrett Meredith, 97, died Monday, January 15, 2001, in Sanders Nursing Home. She was born in Center Cross, Va., and had made her residence in Gloucester for many years. She was the widow of the late John A. Meredith and the daughter of the late Eugene Lee and Ada Durham Garrett. She was a graduate of Blackstone School for Girls and had taught school in King and Queen and Middlesex County for 13 years. She was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church at Upright, Va., and she loved and attended Salem United Methodist Church in Gloucester. She is survived by two sisters, Ada Garrett Jackson, formerly of Deltaville, and Blanche Garrett, formerly of Center Cross, Va.; and a loving friend, Patsy L. Hall and her husband, David Hall. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 18, 2001, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Andrews Funeral Home by Rev. Lowell P. Stovall and Rev. Matt Nelson. Burial will be in Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Habitat for Humanity of Gloucester-Mathews Inc., P.O. Box 1880, Gloucester, Va. 23061 or to the Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 1417, Gloucester, Va. 23061. Andrews Funeral Home, Gloucester, is in charge of arrangements.

MESSER
William A. Messer, 76, went home to be with the Lord January 15, 2001. He leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Madge Peake Messer; daughters, Sharon R. Williams and Susan M. Craig; sons, Danny A. and Ray W. Messer; and grandson, Jay Miller. Also surviving are 12 other grandchildren, fifteen and one-half great-grandchildren, sons and daughters-in-law, many relatives, friends, and a host of others to whom he was also known as "Dad" or "Grand-dad". The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). Mr. Messer will lie in state at Evangel Assembly of God, 2013 Broad Rock Blvd., from 12 noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday with funeral services to be held at 2 p.m. Interment Dale Memorial Park.

MITCHELL
Wilbur E. Mitchell Sr., age 81, of Irvington, Va., died January 15, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Beatrice S. Mitchell; two sons, P. Jack Austin, Portsmouth, Va., and Wilbur E. Mitchell Jr., Kilmarnock, Va.; a daughter, Barbara M. Martin, Bermuda; two stepdaughters, Jacqueline D. Southworth, Richmond, Va., and Jane S. Boone, Calabash, N.C. Remains rest at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock, Va., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday in Irvington Baptist Church, Irvington, Va., with interment in the church cemetery.
