PARKER
Cabell M. Parker, 85, of Richmond, widower of Olga B. Parker, died Monday, January 15, 2001. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Cabell P. Kinton of Richmond, and Mrs. Garnett P. Thompson of Virginia Beach; also five grandchildren. Mr. Parker was a veteran of World War II; retired from AMF, Inc.; and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Strict Observance No. 207, AF&AM, for over 64 years. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave. Graveside service with Masonic rites will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in Forest Lawn.

PIKE
Pearl A. Pike, age 90, of Amelia, Va., widow of Melvin Pike, passed from this earthly life on Sunday, January 14, 2001. She is survived by her children, Nancy Jones and husband, Bobby of Amelia and Shelba Smith of West Covina, Calif.; and son, James A. Pike of Blackstone, Va.; her grandchildren, Leigh and J.R. Snellings of Amelia, Tammy and Ryan Lawson of Blackstone, Teresa and Matt Humphreys and Mike and Dana Smith of California; great-grandchildren, Chelsea and Tori Snellings and Jacob Smith; her sister, Mary Winn of Tappahannock, Va.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gonjoe and Mabel Anderson of Church Road, Va., and Curtis and Frances Anderson of Berlin, Md. The family will receive friends at Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St., Amelia, Va., from 2 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, January 17, 2001. The service will be held in the chapel of the funeral home on Thursday, January 18, 2001 at 2 p.m., with interment in Little Flock Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Amelia. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Amelia Fire Departments and Amelia Volunteer Rescue Squad.

PURCELL
Richard (Dick) E. Purcell, 74, of Richmond, passed away January 15, 2001. He is survived by two daughters, Patricia K. Purcell Swan-Walker and her husband, Rex of Newport News, Michele N. Purcell of Mechanicsville; one brother, Theodore M. Purcell and his wife, Sandy of Melrose, Fla.; and Jan Purcell, who shared a lifetime of friendship and devotion. Mr. Purcell was preceded in death by his parents, Lester Ellsworth Purcell and Gertrude Andre' Purcell and a brother, Gilbert L. Purcell. He was the owner of Purcell Coffee and Tea. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Dale Memorial Park.

ROBERTSON
Grace B. Robertson, 104, of Richmond, died Tuesday, January 16, 2001. She was the widow of James Benjamin Robertson. She is survived by her daughter, Dean Smith; two nephews, Forrest C. Bailey III and Dean L. (Billy) Mountcastle; and several great-nieces and nephews. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Graveside service will be held 12 p.m. Thursday at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Mrs. Robertson was a member of First Church Christ, Scientist. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Children's Hospital.

SALA
The Rev. Robert R. Sala, 88, of Richmond, died Monday, January 15, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Hilda B. Sala; a daughter, Lois S. Giles and her husband, William; sons, Edward Ross Sala and his wife, Renee and David Robert Sala; grandchildren, Steven, Richard, Michael and Diane Giles, and Emma Sala; a great-grandson, Cole Giles. Rev. Sala was a graduate of Susquehanna University and Gettysburg Seminary. He served as pastor of Epiphany Lutheran Church in Richmond from 1952 until his retirement in 1977 and also served nine years on the executive board of the Virginia Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He was the longtime chaplain of the Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad from its organization until his retirement in 1977. A memorial service will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Epiphany Lutheran Church, Monument Avenue and Horsepen Road, with a reception to follow at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of Epiphany Lutheran Church. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Bon Secours Hospice.

SEKERDY
Alexander (Alex) Sekerdy, 76, of Richmond, Va., died Tuesday, January 16, 2001. He was preceded in death by a son, George Sekerdy and is survived by his wife, Eleanor Yarbough Sekerdy; six children, Virginia N. Cline, Steve, Alex Jr., Wayne, David and Daniel Sekerdy; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Sekerdy was the former owner and operator of Alex's Men's Hairstyling in Westbury Shopping Center for 25 years, and a member of Grove Avenue Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Parham Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Road, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

SOUTHALL
Died January 12, 2001, Mildred Wingfield Southall of Queens, N.Y. She is survived by her sister, Aretha Skinner; and other family and friends. Funeral and interment in Queens, N.Y., on January 17, 2001.

TAYLOR
Raymond T. Taylor Sr., of Boston Ave., departed this life Sunday, January 14, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Margaret P. Taylor; daughter, Annette Taylor; seven sons, Raymond Jr., Anthony, Alphonso, Frankie, Emanuel, Jose and Freddie Taylor; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ulysses and Tyrone Taylor; sister, Gwendolyn Rock; a host of nieces and nephews, one daughter-in-law, one brother-in-law, four sisters-in-law, five brothers-in-law, father-in-law, mother-in-law, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts., where funeral services will be held Thursday, January 18, 1 p.m. Interment Maury Cemetery. Relatives and friends attending service, assemble at the funeral home Thursday, 12:30 p.m.

TIGNOR
Sandy K. Tignor of Powhatan, died January 15, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Tignor; one daughter and her husband, Donna and Ken Stewart of Powhatan; one son, Barry Tignor of Stafford; her mother, Dale Hardman Folds of Powhatan; three sisters, Tammy Schmied, Kathy Dickson, both of Powhatan, and Paula Brads of Lynchburg; one granddaughter, Darian Stewart. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy., Powhatan, and where services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday. Interment Powhatan Community Cemetery.

TINSLEY-ROZELLE
Shirley Tinsley Rozelle of San Diego, Calif., passed away on Friday, January 12, 2001. She was the daughter of the late Philip M. Tinsley Sr. and his wife, Maude Herndon Tinsley of Richmond, Va. Born and raised in Richmond, Mrs. Rozelle relocated to San Diego with her husband, William B. (Dutch) Rozelle. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her brother, Philip M. Tinsley Jr. and his wife, Dottie O'Neil Tinsley; close friend and sister-in-law, Thelma H. Tinsley, all of Midlothian, Va.; son, James; daughter, Tammy of La Jolla, Calif.; and niece, Debra L. Tinsley and her husband, Ronald R. Rinker of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. A private memorial service was held in Bonita, Calif. Arrangements by Glen Abbey Mortuary, Bonita, Calif.

TURNER
Robert L. Turner (Butterbean) of Richmond died January 15, 2001. He is survived by a daughter, Frances Plott; and a son, Robert Turner; eight grandchildren; his stepmother, Mary Turner; sisters, Frances Lowe of California, Helen Barnard of Maryland, Sally Thurston, Vivian Martin, Mary Ann Haynes, Faye Hower, Nancy Dickerson; two brothers, Bobby Turner and James Turner of Bowling Green. Floreid M. Twombly of Richmond, widow of William A. Twombly, died Tuesday, January 16, 2001. She is survived by four children, Marcia Inge and her husband, E. W. of Sandston, Stephen Twombly and wife, Michelle of Virginia Beach, Linda Benson and her husband, Marc of Herndon, Va., and Deborah Harding and her husband, Scott of Richmond, Va.; a brother, George B. McMillan and his wife, Lou of Cowpens, S.C.; ten grandchildren, Susan Blankenship and husband, Aaron, Karen Hart, Kevin Inge, Guy Tharpe, Kelly Inge, Laura Harding, Craig Tharpe, Dana Benson, Anthony Benson and Courtney Tharpe; and one great-grandchild, Chevy Blankenship; special friends, Edie Justko, Tommy and Lou Ann Fincher. Graveside services 3 p.m. Friday, Washington Memorial Park. Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., in charge of arrangements.

WORD
Benjamin Harrison Word Jr., M.D., of Albemarle County, Va., died Monday, January 15, 2001. He was born in Enonville, Va., on May 20, 1924, the son of Benjamin Harrison Sr. and Edna Viola Scott Word. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth Ann Lentz Word; and a brother, John Scott Word. Ben is survived by his wife, Suzanne Smith Word; three daughters, Charlotte Word Rose and her husband, Stephen of Laytonsville, Md., Nancy Word Zernan and her husband, Andrew of Chapel Hill, N.C., Elizabeth Word-Glennie and her husband, Gilbert Glennie of Charlottesville, Va.; one son, Benjamin H. Word III of Virginia Beach, Va.; a stepson, P. Cowles Sweet II of Alberene, Va.; a stepmother, Pauline Peters Word of Dillwyn, Va.; two brothers, Floyd Neal Word and his wife, Margaret Ann of Buckingham, Va., and Rodney H. Word and his wife, Betsy of Richmond, Va.; nine grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. During the early part of World War II, he worked in the Newport News Shipyards supporting the war effort building ships. Volunteering for the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943, he was a nose gunner on B-24s and B-29s until his discharge in 1946, when he went on inactive reserve and later received a commission. He received B.A. and M.A. degrees in biology in 1949 and 1954, respectively, and an M.D. degree in 1958, all from the University of Virginia. His internship was served at Barnes Hospital, Washington University, St. Louis, 1958-59. A 4 1/2 year residency in OB-GYN was taken at the University of Virginia Hospital. Prior to entering medical school, he worked in the Biochemistry Research Laboratory at the U.Va. Medical School and the Biology and Chemistry Laboratories at the Institute of Textile Technology. Dr. Word entered private practice in OB-GYN in 1964 at the Martha Jefferson Hospital and taught part-time as an instructor in the OB-GYN Department at U.Va. During his 25 years of practice, he enjoyed a long-term partnership with Drs. Charles F. Hunt and Howard A. Montgomery, as well as associations with other physicians. Health problems led to an early retirement in 1989. A member of longstanding in the Virginia OB-GYN Society, Virginia Medical Society, Albemarle County Medical Society, American Medical Association, American College of OB-GYN, South Atlantic Association of OB-GYN, and Society of Gynecologic Surgeons, he was also past president and director of the Flying Physicians Association, an organization in which he combined his love of flying with that of continuing medical education. In recent years, his volunteer efforts focused on two main areas: the University of Virginia Medical Alumni Association where he put forth much effort as class representative; and the local American Heart Association where he founded a heart support group which has now grown to include the scheduling of prominent cardiac-related physicians and other professionals as monthly guest speakers. With his ability to view heart disease issues from the perspective of both patient and physician, Ben made biweekly rounds on hospitalized heart patients to answer questions and allay their fears. If you wish, please consider supporting the Martha Jefferson Hospital Development Fund, U.Va. Medical Alumni Foundation, local American Heart Association, Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad or the SPCA. The memorial service will be held on January 19, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church located at 735 Park Street. The family will receive friends following the service. Interment at Monticello Memorial Gardens will be private. Hill and Wood Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

WYATT
James Russell Wyatt, 50, of Montpelier, Va., departed this life January 15, 2001. Remains rest at Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home, 518 N. Washington Hwy., Ashland, Va. Funeral notice later.

ADAMS
Mary B. Adams, 80, of Richmond, died Wednesday, November 21, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Adams; her son, Warren L. Adams; her daughter, Glenda A. Currie and husband, Bill Currie; two grandchildren, Billy Currie and wife, Shannon Currie and Kendal Currie; one sister, Annie Clarke. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Fairmount Memorial Baptist Church where Mrs. Adams was a lifelong member. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.

BANNISTER
John L. Bannister passed away November 22, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Josephine W.; his daughters, Joni Lawson, Laurie Jo Wilson and her husband, William J., Lisa Brooks and her husband, Clyde W.; grandchildren, Michael, Lauren, Kayla and John William; sisters, Kathleen Bannister, Janet Ballard and Judy Kostyniuk; brothers, Luke O., Martin J. and Charles; numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 South Laburnum Ave., from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, where a prayer service will be held 7 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be held at St. John's Catholic Church 1 p.m. Monday. Interment Washington Memorial Park.

BOWERS
Rev. Vernon J. Bowers, a retired priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Richmond, died November 20, 2001. He was ordained a priest on June 3, 1939 at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in Fort Monroe, Va. For the first 11 years of his ministry, Fr. Bowers traveled to small communities throughout Virginia in a mobile chapel to preach and educate residents about the Catholic faith. Later he served as the founding pastor of St. Edward's Church in Richmond, and pastor of churches in Danville, Roanoke and Williamsburg, as well as working as an alcohol counselor at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. Since his retirement in 1979, he has made his home in Ware Neck, Va. Fr, Bowers is survived by several nieces and nephews. His body will lie in state beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, November 26, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 12 noon. The Most Rev. Walter F. Sullivan will be the principal celebrant. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements by Bliley Funeral Homes.
