Quesenberry
Lena L. "Cindy" Quesenberry, age 32, of Meadowview, died Friday, July 4, 1997 from injuries received in an automobile accident.
She was a native of Smyth County and had lived all her life in Washington County. She was employed by Bristol Compressors for 10 years.
Survivors include her husband, Benjamin Franklin "Frankie" Quesenberry II; her parents, Tommy and Mary O'Quinn, Abingdon; one brother, Tommy O'Quinn Jr., Meadowview; one sister, Vicky Ann Edwards, Meadowview; her maternal grandmother, Evelyn Herndon, Saltville.
Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 7, in Sunset Memorial Park with the Rev. Don Lasley officiating.

Schwartz
Noel R. Schwartz, age 76, died Tuesday, July 8, 1997 at his home in Marion. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen H. Schwartz.
Mr. Schwartz was retired from the Southwestern State Hospital after 42 years of service. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Marion Recreation Department, and VFW Post #4667. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge and the Coon Hunter's Club.
He is survived by two daughters, Donna S. Cochran of Bristol, and Lisa Thomas Heckert of Marion; two sons, Randall W. Schwartz and Darrell K. Schwartz, both of Bristol; two sisters, Mary (Beezy) Testerman of Seven Mile Ford, and Sally Goins of Marion; four brothers, Earl (Tiny) Schwartz of Orlando, Fla., Jack Schwartz of Marion, James (Jay) Schwartz of Rural Retreat, and David Schwartz of Richmond; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 11, at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with burial in the Riverside Cemetery in Chilhowie where full military rites will be conducted by VFW Post #4667. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seaver-
Brown Chapel.

Smith
Charles Edward "Ed" Smith, age 66, died Sunday, July 6, 1997 at his home in Saltville.
He attended Lighthouse Baptist Church.
Mr.
Smith was a grocer most of his life, having owned and operated Midway Super Market, was owner of Saltville Motor Sales and since retiring had been farming.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia "Pat" Holley Smith; seven daughters, Mrs. David (Martha) Jewell, Toledo, Ohio, Loretta Smith, Tazewell, Anita Freeman and Mrs. Charles (Guyedda) Wry, both of Meadowview, Mrs. Doug (Abby) Miller, Abingdon, Darlene Perkins, Tannersville, and Mrs. Charles (Patricia) Roark, Saltville; three sons, Robert E. Funeral services will be conducted today, July 9, at 11 a.m. in Lighthouse Baptist Church with the Rev. Benny Frye and the Rev. Danny Frye officiating. Entombment will be in Mount Rose Cemetery Mausoleum.

Anderson
R.C. Anderson, age 71, died Monday, July 7, 1997 in the Winterhaven Hospital in Florida.
Mr. Anderson was a native of the Sugar Grove area and was retired from the drywall business. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the 41st Infantry in World War II. He was also a member of the VFW.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Anderson, Lake Hamilton, Fla.; three daughters, Rita Helton and Kathy Neal, both of Lake Hamilton, Fla., and Sharon Handley, Auburndale, Fla.; three sons, Donald Anderson, Lake Hamilton, Fla., Robert Anderson and Larry Anderson, both of Haines City, Fla.; five sisters: Mary Keys, Sugar Grove, Helen Carver, Shirley
Smith and Lessie Singleton, all of Rural Retreat, and Betty Sue Brown, Takoma, Wash.; three brothers, Ernest Anderson, Abingdon, Robert Anderson, Rural Retreat, and Blaine Anderson, Pennsylvania; 23 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 11, at 2 p.m. in the Summit Baptist Church, Sugar Grove, with the Rev. Don Tate and the Rev. Jody Blevins officiating. Interment followed in Slemp Cemetery with military honors being rendered.

Beckner
Oliver Wendell Beckner, age 77, of Chilhowie, died Monday, July 7, 1997 in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Beckner was a native of Elkhorn, W.Va., and a graduate of Elkhorn High School. He attended Bluefield College. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and completed a year at Concord College, Athens, W.Va., under the Air Force Reserve Training Program. He then entered V.P.I., Blacksburg, where he received his B.S. degree in General Business Administration. After graduation at V.P.I., he worked at the Southern States Cooperative in Wytheville for approximately two years, then as a personnel officer at the Brunswick Balke Collinder Corp., Marion. He worked for five years for Greever's Inc., in Chilhowie.
Mr. Beckner initiated his career as a probation officer in January 1958 when he went to work in District #17 in Abingdon. He was appointed Chief Officer in June 1963 and remained in that capacity until December 1975. At that time it was his decision to return as a field officer. For the next 16 years, Mr. Beckner served as a probation officer and parole officer in Smyth County.
Mr. Beckner was awarded the first Probation and Parole Officer of the Year award presented by the Virginia Department of Corrections in 1984. This award is now presented annually in his name. He retired in 1991 but continued working in a part time capacity. In all, he served the State of Virginia for 39 years.
He was an active member of the Royal Oak Presbyterian Church in Marion where he served one term as deacon, two terms as Elder and taught an adult Sunday School class.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 10, in Royal Oak Presbyterian Church in Marion with the Rev. Steve Cathcart, the Rev. Neville Mozingo and the Rev. Carol Scrivener officiating. Burial was in the Old Glade Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Royal Oak Presbyterian Church Building Fund, Marion.

Ford
Acie Ray Ford, age 78, died Wednesday, July 9, 1997 at his home in Marion.
Mr. Ford was a native of Pikeville, Ky., and was preceded in death by his wife, Dina Ford. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in World War II. He was a game manager in Smyth County for 15 years and was retired from D.G. Mouldings. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Marion.
Survivors include two sons, Wayne Ford, Marion, and James Ford, Galax; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted today, July 12, at 1 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jack Golf officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Cemetery with full military honors being rendered by the Francis Marion VFW Post #4667.

Hawthorne
Clarence Elmer "Bud" Hawthorne, age 71, or Rural Retreat, died Thursday, July 10, 1997 in Birdmont Health Care Center. He was a member of the Sharon Baptist Church where he served as deacon for many years. He was a U.S. veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Patsye Miller Hawthorne of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law: Dr. Alan and Sherry Hawthorne of Rural Retreat; Chief Master Sergeant (Retired) U.S.A.F. Dale and Rosey Hawthorne of Belton, S.C.; Chief Warrant Officer, U.S.C.G. Robert "Dimps" Hawthorne of Mt. Vernon; two daughters and son-in-law, Judy H. and Jim Matney of Galax, and Nancy H. Delp of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four brothers, Kyle Hawthorne of Sugar Grove, Coy Hawthorne of Greensburg, Ky., Dean Hawthorne of Rural Retreat, and Camet Hawthorne of Eufaula, Ala.; two sisters, Okey H. King and Eva H. Williams, both of Rural Retreat.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 13, at 3 p.m. at the Sharon Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Hoyle officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Rural Retreat American Legion Post #229. The family will receive friends at the Lindsey Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Rural Retreat Emergency Services.

Hoyer
Dagmar Hoyer, age 89, died July 9, 1997 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
She is survived by two daughters, Tove Barker of Marion, and Inge Hienz of Copenhagen, Denmark; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 15, in Copenhagen, Denmark.
