John L. Keement Sr.

John L. Keement Sr., 83, of Coventry died August 22, 2009, at his home.
Mr. Keement was born May 25, 1926, in Newport Center, a son of John and Alice (Rivard) Keement. He was raised on the family farm in Newport Center.
He worked at various jobs throughout his life, including as grader operator in the maintenance department for the city of Newport for 19 years. After his retirement, he worked for himself hauling cattle for area farmers. He especially enjoyed attending the commission sales in Orleans. He loved all animals and he most always had a dog or two.
He was always available to lend a hand to family and friends when needed. He loved his family and always enjoyed their visits. He enjoyed watching television, especially Western shows.
He is survived by children: John Keement Jr. and his wife, Kerry, of Coventry, Mary Lantagne and her husband, Bernie, of Morgan, Laurie Keement and her friend, Larry Moss, of Newport, Debora Chaput and her husband, Francis, of North Troy, Linda Kudla and her husband, John, of Brownington, and Ila Chilafoux and her husband, Starlyn, of Orleans; by 17 grandchildren; by 23 great-grandchildren; by two brothers, Vincent Keement Sr. of Derby and Tony Keement and his wife, Betty, of North Carolina; by two sisters, Mary Labrecque of Derby and Margaret Hancock and her husband, Wendall, of Newport Center; and by the mother of his children, Sadie Watters, of Albany. He was predeceased by one great-grandchild; and by his sister Agnes Hardy.
Funeral services were held August 25 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Michael Reardon officiating. Interment followed in St. Mary’s cemetery in Newport.

Bethany McAlister

The family of Bethany McAlister is saddened to announce her unexpected death at the young age of 21 on August 18, 2009, in Newport.
Ms. McAlister, a resident of Hyde Park, was born December 22, 1987, in Newport, a beloved daughter of Donald and Debra Ann (Valley) McAlister. She loved spending time with family. She took great pride in being called “Auntie.”
One of her many passions in life was animals. She enjoyed listening to music and hanging out with her friends. She always greeted people with smiles and hugs.
She took pride in being in the first class to graduate from Wheeler Mountain Academy in Barton.
Her absence will leave a big hole in the hearts of those who loved her.
She is survived by her loving mother, Debra Ann Valley, and her companion, Randy Towns; by her father, Donald McAlister Jr., and his wife, Angelina; by her devoted brother Jason McAlister and his daughter Brionna; by two half-brothers, Colin and Kenneth McAlister; by stepsister Monica; by two stepbrothers, Corey and John; by memere Hilda Valley; by grandmother Donna Schofield; by grandfather Donald McAlister Sr. and his wife, Chris; by many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends; and by her very special friend Jay Medley, who had a special place in her heart.
A celebration of her life was held August 22 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport. Interment followed in Derby Center cemetery.

Marion Agnes Wood

Marion Agnes Wood, 72, of Derby died August 19, 2009, in Newport.
Mrs. Wood was born August 10, 1937, in Newport, a daughter of Stanley and Mary (Ranny) Sargent.
In 1957 she married Arthur Wood, who predeceased her in 1974.
She loved her dogs, especially Duke. She was a hard worker and she was always ready to help anyone in need.
She is survived by two brothers, Charles Sargent of Massachusetts and George Sargent and his wife, Bonnie, of Charleston; by two sisters, Caroline Dopp and her husband, Larry, of Derby and Charlotte Vinal and her family of Newport; by several nieces and nephews; by her sister-in-law Mae Reed; her special caretakers and cousin Tammy Verge and Kevin Hayes, with whom she lived for the past six years. She was predeceased by her son Frank Wood; and by her soul mate of 29 years, Henry Bergeron.
A graveside service was held at the Derby cemetery August 21 with the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating.

Elwin Lee Annis Jr.

Elwin Lee Annis Jr., 49, of Irasburg died suddenly on February 4, 2010, at home.
Mr. Annis was born June 30, 1960, in Newport, a son of Elwin Lee Annis Sr.
He was a pattern designer for Ethan Allen in Orleans for 22 years. He retired in 1997 due to illness.
He enjoyed bowling and fishing, but most of all, he enjoyed playing with his nephews Robert Jr., Francis, Joseph, and Thomas Annis.
He is survived by his brothers: Robert Annis Sr. of Irasburg, Brien Lemois Jr. of Irasburg, and Erik Murray and his fiancée, Alissa Fountaine, of Orleans; by his adopted mother Nancy Lemois of Irasburg; and by his best friend, Raymond Royer, of Orleans. He was predeceased by his father, Elwin Lee Annis Sr.; by his adopted father Brien Lemois Sr.; and by his sister-in-law Barbara Annis.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 10, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel on Lake Road in Newport. Spring interment will be held at the Irasburg cemetery.
Should friends desire, contributions in Mr. Annis’ memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.

Gertrude Mary Drown

Gertrude Mary Drown, 93, died at her favorite place, home, on February 2, 2010, with her loving family by her side.
Mrs. Drown was born in Holland on February 18, 1916, a daughter of Harry and Mildred (Collins) Hall.
After attending Holland Graded School, she went to live with her aunt and uncle Ken and Thelma Somerville in Newport while she attended Newport High School.
There she met the love of her life, Jersey Drown. After high school graduation she enrolled in the child-care program at the New York Presbyterian Hospital, following which, she was employed on Long Island, New York.
She married Warren “Jersey” Drown on December 10, 1938. Together they made their home in several communities as her husband’s work required. In 1940, they returned to Newport to live at his family homestead for the next 70 years.
First and foremost, she was a truly devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend.
Her love of reading led her to be the assistant and later head librarian at the Goodrich Memorial Library in Newport for 13 years.
Later she worked in the library at Sacred Heart Graded School. She enjoyed oil painting as well as collecting and refinishing antique furniture.
She enjoyed many happy times at Lake Salem, particularly when Gram and Gramp Jacobsen arrived from Connecticut and her dear and close nieces and nephews would visit.
She held memberships with the United Church of Newport, the Holland Historical Society, and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a lifetime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She is survived by her two children, Charles Drown Sr. and his wife, Virginia, of Newport Center and Ruth Richard and her husband, Mike, of Newport; by grandchildren: Charles “Chuck” Drown Jr. and his wife, Sue, of Colorado, Michael Morey and his wife, Shelly, of Newport, Kristen Morey of Newport, and Sara Richard of Burlington; by one great-granddaughter, Jenna Morey; by her siblings: Collins Hall of Irasburg, Mary Lou Wyman of Virginia, and Gilbert Hall of New York; and by many loved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; by her loving husband, Warren “Jersey” Drown; and by siblings Joshua and Alfred Hall.
Funeral services were held February 5 at the United Church of Newport with the Reverend Martha Peck and the Reverend Richard O’Hara officiating. Spring interment will be in Pine Grove cemetery in Newport.

William H. McCarthy

William H. McCarthy, 88, of Derby died peacefully February 5, 2010, in Newport.
Mr. McCarthy was born September 29, 1921, in Bayonne, New Jersey, a son of Jerry and Ellen (Croghan) McCarthy.
On December 18, 1943, he married Dolores Kerman, who predeceased him in 2008.
He entered the United States Navy and served his country during World War II.
He was an electrician and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 3.
He moved to Derby about 20 years ago after his retirement in Cranford, New Jersey.
He held membership with St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Derby Line, where he was a deacon. He loved hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his daughter Ellen McCarthy of Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey; by his son Bill McCarthy and his wife, Robyn, of Newport; by six grandchildren: Christopher, Elizabeth, Maggie, Catie, Taylor, and Kelsey; by one great-granddaughter, Grace Ellen; by two brothers, Harry McCarthy and his wife, Madeline, of New Jersey and Eddie McCarthy of Connecticut; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by four brothers.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, February 10, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 11, at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Derby Line with the Reverend Michael Reardon celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial.

Priscilla Jean Plante

Priscilla Jean Plante, 83, of Newport Center died peacefully February 7, 2010, at her home.
Mrs. Plante was born May 2, 1926, in Newport Center, a daughter of Earl and Marion (Colburn) Hammond.
She graduated from Newport High School.
She married Carlton Plante on May 23, 1963. He predeceased her in 2004.
She was employed as a clerk for many years by the former W.C. Woolworth, W.T. Grant, Fedele’s Grocery Store, and RJ’s Friendly Market in Newport.
She enjoyed feeding the birds, deer and turkeys and working in her flower and vegetable gardens at her home.
She is survived by three brothers: David Hammond and his wife, Elaine, of Cleveland, Ohio, Milton Hammond and his wife, Phyllis, of Newport Center, and Eric Hammond and his wife, Barbara, of Derby; by nieces and nephews: Peggy Hammond, Robert Hammond and his wife, Patty, and Patty Blask and her husband, Ken, all of Cleveland, Bruce Hammond and his wife, Joyce, of Michigan, Ronald Plante and his wife, Darlene, of Derby, Laurie Hammond and her husband, Rick, of Derby, Linda Hancock and her husband, Richard, of Coventry, Michael Hammond and his wife, Amber, of Stanley, North Carolina, and Daniel Hammond and his wife, Shawna, of Newport Center; and by several great-nieces and -nephews. She was predeceased by her sister-in-law Jeanne Hammond in 2003.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 12, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel on Lake Road in Newport with the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating. Spring interment will be in Lake Road cemetery.

Donna L. Grenier

Donna L. Grenier, 50, of Derby died suddenly on September 13, 2009, in Newport.
Mrs. Grenier was born March 25, 1959, in Newport, a daughter of Roy and Audrey (Crowe) Sanborn.
She was a seamstress for Slalom Ski Wear for many years. She enjoyed gardening, doing crafts, camping, and tending to her plants. She enjoyed being a homemaker for the last few years.
She is survived by her daughter Jennifer; by her brother Jeff Sanborn of Derby; and by her life partner, Michael Vigeant, of Derby.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
