Richard P. Austin

Richard P. Austin, 79, of Newport died Saturday, May 2, 2009.
Mr. Austin was born March 9, 1930, in St. Johnsbury, a son of Elmon and Helen (Blodgett) Austin.
He was a member of the Vermont Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired and the Helen Keller Society.
He prided himself on his appearance. He loved children, animals, fishing, and keeping busy, and he was very intelligent.
He was loved by many people with whom he came into contact. He had patience with people he dealt with as he was teaching them different facets of life with which he was familiar.
He is survived by special friends Kathlene Douglass and Jim Jarvis and many friends at Kingdom Way.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 7, at 10:30 a.m. at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport with the Reverend Yvon Royer officiating. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the funeral. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s cemetery in Newport.
Arrangements are by Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Homes.

Lawrence E. Baker Sr.

Lawrence E. Baker Sr., 77, formerly of Meredith, New Hampshire, died April 17, 2009, in Lady Lake, Florida, where he had resided for the past seven years.
Mr. Baker worked in the building trade for many years until his retirement in 1993.
He was born in Newport on June 30, 1931, a son of Stanley Baker and Doris (Leavitt) Baker.
He married Laura Nelson on April 25, 1953, in Newport. He served in the U.S. Army from October 1948 to August 1952 during the Korean War.
He is survived by his six children: Penelope Paquette of Leesburg, Florida, Lawrence Baker Jr. of Manchester, New Hampshire, Sandra McCormick of Lady Lake, Blaine Baker of Kent, Washington, Cindy Frazer of Monroe, New Hampshire, and Kerry Baker of Hoodsport, Washington; by brothers: Robert, Donald, and Stanley Baker; by sisters: Betty Ann Finn, Mona Lewis, Doris Demers, and Valda Cole; by 25 grandchildren; by 39 great-grandchildren; and by six great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Laura, in 1995; by his sisters Vera McFarland and Bonnie Bullis; by his brothers Winston Kelly and Lawrence Kelly; and by his daughter-in-law Doris Mason.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Geraldine Alice Payeur Germain Christie

Geraldine Alice Payeur Germain Christie, 83, of Vernon died peacefully on April 14, 2009, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire.
Mrs. Christie was born July 23, 1925, in Island Pond, a daughter of Samuel and Alice Thibideau Payeur. She spent the first 30 years of her life in the Northeast Kingdom, the next 35 years in Connecticut, and then retired to Garner, North Carolina. She had moved back to Vermont in January.
She worked hard taking care of her loving family and as a waitress at country clubs in Connecticut. She loved doing crossword puzzles and playing cards.
She is survived by her sons: Paul Germain and his wife, Randy, of Emeryville, California, Jeffrey Germain of Garner, North Carolina, Mark Germain and his wife, Anne, of Glenrock, New Jersey, Alan Germain and his wife, Barbara, of Townshend, Scott Germain and his wife, Cindy, of Wallingford, Connecticut, and Timothy Germain and his wife, Susan, of Cheshire, Connecticut; by her daughter Dawn Germain of Wallingford; by stepdaughters Constance Christine Rosenquist and her husband, Vincent, of Zephyrhills, Florida, and Cheryl Christie Collett and her husband, Remo Noonan, of Wallingford; by 19 grandchildren; by six great-grandchildren; and by her brother Bernard Payeur and his wife, Bunny, of Derby Line. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Christie; by her first husband, Leonard R. Germain; by her sister Bernadine Germain; and by her brother Gerald Payeur.
A service and Mass are planned for May 29 at 3 p.m. at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Island Pond. A weekend for all is planned to honor her and celebrate her life. She will be laid to rest with her beloved sister Bunny and alongside her parents at the Island Pond cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Children’s Hospice International or the American Cancer Society.

W. David Usher

W. David Usher, 69, a longtime resident of Craftsbury, died at his home in Quartzsite, Arizona, on Sunday, April 26, 2009.
Mr. Usher was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on September 28, 1939, a son of W. Lawrence and Virginia (Donald) Usher.
He completed three years at Bowdoin College in Bowdoin, Maine.
He served his country in the U.S. Navy until discharged because of his diabetes.
He owned and operated the Tillotson farm on the Morey Road in Craftsbury for many years while working as a salesman in various lines of business, whatever it took to keep his farm going. He later sold the farm and helped his wife work her family dairy farm.
He was a mentor for students at Craftsbury Academy for several years. He enjoyed shooting guns, riding ATVs in the Arizona desert, visiting national parks, and traveling across the country.
He leaves his three children: Lisa Jakob of Bernex, Switzerland, William "Bill" Usher of Hampton, Virginia, and Kari Usher of Flagstaff, Arizona; two sisters, Deb Palmer of Afton, Wyoming, and Leslie Anderson of Bowdoinham, Maine; four grandsons: Connor and Taylor Usher and William and Cyprien Jakob; his former wife and mother of his children, Susan Lowell Usher, of Hampton; and his late wife's family, Neil and Mavis (Morey) Stoddard, as well as their extended family and all his friends.
He was predeceased by his wives, Marilyn Rondoe Usher, who died in February 1996, and Linda Stoddard Usher, who died in March 2008.
A summer memorial service is being planned for July with an announcement to be made at a future date.
Contributions in Mr. Usher’s memory may be made to the Craftsbury Academy Trustees, scholarship fund, in care of Val Adams, treasurer, 686 Town Highway 19, Craftsbury Common, Vermont 05827.
The Malcolm R. Davis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ronald Charles Flood

Ronald “Ron” Charles Flood, 68, of Newport died peacefully March 18, 2010, in Newport surrounded by his loving family.
He was born October 27, 1941, in Concord, New Hampshire, a son of Donald and Lena (Thomas) Flood.
On January 26, 1968, he married Penny Pierce who survives him.
He graduated from St. Johnsbury Trade School and entered the U.S. Air Force where he served his country during peacetime.
He had worked as a sales clerk for J.B. Colton of Orleans, Lyndonville Hardware and Prouty and Miller.
He held membership with the Memphremagog Lodge #65 F&AM of Newport.
His hobbies included kayaking, camping, birdwatching and spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Flood will be remembered for his humor and for being a private person.
He is survived by his wife, Penny Flood, of Newport; his daughters: Dawn Flood and her fiancé, Ron Dunn, of Holland, Heidi Gleason and her husband, Randy, of Holland, and Tina Hill and her husband, Mike, of Newport Center. He is also survived by the following grandchildren: Christine, Mike, Marc, Keagan, Steven, Randy Jr., Gabrielle, Jonathan, Alexa, Silas, and Mylah, and by one great-grandson, Mack. He is also survived by his sister Sally Guadagni and her husband, Chuck, of Newport Center; his brother David Flood of St. Albans; his brothers-in-law Ken Pierce and his wife, Mary Jean, of Newport and David Pierce and his wife, Allison, of Northfield, Massachusetts; and by several nieces and nephews.
At Mr. Flood’s request, there will be no services. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Arnold C. George

Arnold C. George, 83, a former longtime resident of Windsor, died suddenly on Wednesday, March 17, at his home in Craftsbury.
He was born November 5, 1926, in Moscow, the son of Bernie M. and Freida (Whittemore) George.
He received his schooling in Stowe, where he graduated from Stowe High School in 1944. He later attended Middlebury College, the University of Vermont, enrolled in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program at Brown University and attended Vermont Technical College.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy, and a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Army. Following his honorable discharge, he married Helen Hannah in Windsor on June 25, 1951.
Mr. George was employed as a tool design engineer at the former Cone Automatic Machine Tool Company in Windsor for many years, until his retirement in 1987.
He was a longtime member and eucharistic minister of the St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor and a member and eucharistic minister of Our Lady of Fatima in Craftsbury.
He and his wife moved to Craftsbury in 1998.
Mr. George was a member of the Windsor Area Jay-Cees and the Windsor Lions Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and feeding and watching birds. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed puzzles and playing cribbage. He was a New England sports enthusiast. He and his wife enjoyed spending time at the ocean, attending Broadway musicals and traveling to Arizona. He greatly enjoyed spending time with his family at the family camp in Craftsbury. He and his wife especially enjoyed attending their grandchildren’s sporting events.
He was predeceased by a sister, Elaine Girard.
Survivors include his loving wife, Helen, of Craftsbury; three sons: Stephen George and his wife, Holly, of Quechee, Mark George and his wife, Colleen, of Windsor, and Michael and his wife, Denise, of Windsor; seven grandchildren: Matthew George, Sarah George, Bailey Olmstead, Clay George, Hannah George, Justin George and Emily Smith; three great-grandchildren: Brady Olmstead, Marley Olmstead and Ian George; one sister, Arlene Deuso of Ludlow; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass was held on March 22 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor. The Reverend Rene Butler was the celebrant. The Reverend Paul Belhumuer was concelebrate. Burial followed in the St. Francis cemetery in Windsor.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Windsor Food Shelf care of St. Francis Church, P.O. Box 46, Windsor, Vermont 05089, or the Hardwick Food Shelf care of Mae Chapin, P.O. Box 236, Hardwick, Vermont 05843.

Ruth Isabel Holbrook

Ruth Isabel Holbrook, 68, of Barre died Thursday, March 18, 2010, at the Vermont Respite House in Williston, where she had been admitted earlier in the week.
She was born August 11, 1941, in Evansville, the daughter of Myron Robert and Marjorie (Goodfellow) Skinner Sr.
She was a 1959 graduate of Orleans High School and had attended Lyndon State College.
On May 28, 1966, she married Kenneth Holbrook in St. Johnsbury where they made their home. He predeceased her.
Mrs. Holbrook was a longtime employee of Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Vermont, retiring in 2004.
Reading and attending country music and gospel concerts and ice shows with her sister Myra were her special interests.
She belonged to Rob Morris OES Chapter #24 in Montpelier and currently, Charity Chapter #57 of Williamstown.
Survivors include her sister Myra Gauthier, of Colchester; her nephew Paul Gauthier Jr. and his wife, Kimberly, and their children and the joys of her life, Erika and Curtis, all of Williamstown; and several cousins. Also surviving are her aunt Alice Hilliker and her stepmother Ruth Skinner, both of Barton.
Besides her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Myron Skinner Jr. and her sister Mary Jane Skinner.
The Eastern Star memorial service and celebration of her life was held March 22 in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home in Barre.
Later interment will be in the Pleasant View cemetery in Orleans.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Champlain Valley, 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, Vermont 05446.

Paul L. Hunt

Paul L. Hunt, 64, of Brownington died March 13, 2010, at the Bel-Aire Nursing Home in Newport.
He was born on June 21, 1945, in Barton.
He was a son of the late Percy and Beatrice (Hudson) Hunt.
Mr. Hunt was a logger for most of his life. He was a New York Yankee’s number one fan. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding in the country, playing weekly poker with his friends, playing cribbage, watching old Westerns on television, and attending horse pulls at just about every fair in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York.
He will be deeply missed by his family, his longtime companion Becky Danforth, and last but not least, his dog Queen.
He is survived by his children: Laurel Piermont and her husband, Edward, of Bolton, and Bernice Hunt of Rutland; by his girlfriend, Becky Danforth, of Brownington; by his grandchildren: Kimberly, Kyann, Jade, Teedra, and Ralph; and by his sister Elizabeth Graves of Newport.
He was predeceased by his brothers: Raymond, Richard, Charles, Ira and Ellis Hunt, and by sisters Rose Willard and Ruth Hunt.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.
