Elsie Wentworth Manning, 81, died May 17, 2009, at Bel-Aire Quality Care Center in Newport, which was her home for the past several years.
Born in Everett, Massachusetts, on March 21, 1928, Ms. Manning was a daughter of Sara (Neilsen) and Hollis Manning, formerly of Morgan.
She attended schools in the greater Boston area and graduated from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, in 1950 with a bachelor of science degree in home economics and chemistry.
With her degree in hand and her proficiency in photography and her ability to interview and write, she found herself traveling the world and accumulating a most impressive work profile.
She began her career with General Foods Corporation in White Plains, New York, in 1952. She served as a television and photography specialist appearing on WOR-TV New York. Her responsibilities included food preparation and studio setup for 350 live and filmed television commercials yearly. It was here where she had her own television program teaching teenagers how to cook and where she developed very special friendships with Bob Hope and Johnny Carson.
In 1962 she joined the staff of the New York Herald Tribune as a news reporter. Among her many responsibilities, she worked with Clementine Paddleford, an internationally renowned food editor. In assisting Miss Paddleford, she searched out recipes from across the nation and wrote food stories, which were syndicated through This Week magazine.
She later became the food editor for Farley Manning Associates in New York City. Moving from New York City to Center City, Philadelphia, in 1968, she was recruited by Farm Journal magazine to become its food editor. During her tenure she traveled the continental U.S. staying with farm families and attending state fairs to learn about favorite family recipes and styles of cooking within the farming community. She planned the magazine’s food features and directed the journal’s test kitchens, where recipes were developed for the magazine’s three million subscriber families. Before her retirement in 1980, she had written seven cookbooks.
Through family and employment associations, Ms. Manning met and developed lifetime friendships with many interesting people to include President and Mrs. Nixon and their daughters Julie and Tricia.
During the time her father was vice president of marketing for Borden’s Company, he personified his products to encourage people to purchase them. He labeled Borden’s Carnation milk with “Elsie the Cow” after his daughter, which so miffed Elsie that she, from that day forth, wanted to be referred to as “Elise.”
Throughout her life, she was noted for her love of cats, antiquing, and international travel. She was most proud to be associated with the Morgan United Church. She considered her most valuable possession to be her many friendships, which included Fernande Seguin, Pat Lewis, Nancy Parker, and Ruth Whitcomb. She had a lifetime friendship with Mary, Analesa, and Eilish Muir and Bruce, whom she considered her brother.
