Amanda Menei

RANDOLPH — Amanda Menei, 19, died unexpectedly Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.

She was born Dec. 4, 1983, in Philadelphia, Penna., the daughter of Joseph and Patricia (Heinze) Menei. She attended school at Highland Park Elementary in Philadelphia, before her family moved to Tunbridge in 1995. She attended the Tunbridge Central School, South Royalton High School in South Royalton, and later The Fold in Lyndonville.

She enjoyed playing on the Tunbridge "Tigers" basketball team and the South Royalton "Royals" high school basketball team. She had worked at the North Tunbridge Store in North Tunbridge with her parents, who owned and operated the store for many years. She lived this past year in Randolph.

Survivors include her parents and two sisters, Alycia and Abigail Menei, all of Springfield; her paternal grandparents, Gabriel and Gloria Menei of Philadelphia, Penna.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, William and Colletta Heinze.

A calling hour was held Monday, Sept. 22, at the Beth-El Christian Fellowship Church in South Royalton. A funeral service followed with Rev. David Wright of the church and Pastor Leland King of Springfield Church of Christ officiating.

The church was filled with Amanda’s many friends, family, caregivers, classmates and teachers. Pastor King opened the service reading scriptures of encouragement. A special tape recording of the song "The Miracle" was played and then Pastor King read a testimony of scripture from Samuel II and Job 1. The church band members: Anna Page, Elaina Griffith, Ralph Richards, Ray McRorie, Pastor Wright and Jake Richards played and sang a collection of worship songs which included "Hungry, " "As the Deer, " "Shout to the Lord, " "Our God is an Awesome God, " and "Great Is Thy Faithfulness."

Words of remembrance were offered by Amanda’s friends who spoke about her kindness, giving personality, friendship, love of basketball, enjoying the time spent with her family and her trust in God. As the service ended family and friends listened to a tape of the song "I Can Only Imagine" by Mercime.

Burial was held immediately following the service at the Spring Road cemetery in Tunbridge. A reception followed the interment at the Beth-El Christian Fellowship Church Hall for everyone to share in a time of fellowship and refreshments hosted by the church women.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Clara Martin Center, Box G, Randolph, Vt., 05060. Arrangements were under the direction of the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home, Main Street, Chelsea.

Ohmen Services

Graveside Services for Della L. Ohmen, 91, of East Bethel who died August 27, 2003 in Lebanon, N.H., will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 at the New Preston cemetery in New Preston, Conn. with Rev. Cheryl Anderson, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Day Funeral Home in Randolph, Vt.

Beatrice Anderson

BROOKFIELD — Beatrice H. Anderson, 83, of Brookfield, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at her home in Brookfield.

She was born April 22, 1920 in Newport Center, the daughter of Archibald and Beulah (Jenkins) Brown.

She graduated from Newport Center High School and worked as a thread grinder at Butterfield Tap & Dye in Derby Line, during the war.. She owned and operated her own business for 16 years, Bea’s Custom Sewing. The drapes, slipcovers, dresses and gowns she made were in great demand throughout California.

Her many talents included poetry (some published), artwork, music, sewing and gardening. She had a passion for children, humming birds, flowers, strawberries, reading and crossword puzzles, and was a talented writer who kept descriptive diaries.

On April 2, 1945, she married Leonard M. Anderson. They made their home in Bennington as well as Broomfield, Conn. and the Norwich/Wilder area retiring in Brookfield.

She is survived by her husband, of Brookfield; and their children: Michael Anderson and his wife, Sandra, of W. Hartford; Alan Anderson and his wife, Judy, of Berrien Springs, Mich.; Gail Sterner and her husband, Vaughn, of Hancock, Mass.; Wanda Anderson of St. Paul, Minn.; and Neil Anderson and his companion, Mark, of St. Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren: Andrew, Olivia, Daniel, Jeanna, Janelle and her companion, Emery, and Michelle and her husband, David; three great-grandchildren: Meliah, Ashley and Joey; a sister Muriel Condon, of Brookfield; and many nieces and nephews from New England to Hawaii and Alaska.

She was pre-deceased by her brother, Stuart Brown, and her sister, Barbara Gigliotti.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. at the Vermont Veterans Memorial cemetery Chapel. There are no calling hours.

Contributions to research, by her son, on lilies, (naming one in her honor) may be made to: University of Minnesota Flower Breeding Program, c/o Neil O. Anderson. Ph.D., 1970 Folwell Ave., St. Paul, Mn 55108.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home, Randolph.

Paul B. Whitcomb

WINDSOR — Paul B. Whitcomb, 81, passed away Saturday, August 12 at the Springfield Health and Rehabilitation Center in Springfield.

He was born August 24, 1918 in Barnard, the son of Abel O. and Winnabel (Pike) Whitcomb.

He attended school in Barnard, and worked on local farms before serving in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. After his discharge from the Army he worked at the Woolen Mill in Northfield and then for area woodworking mills, before working at Renehan Akers Building Contractors in White River Jct. as a carpenter for several years before retiring.

He had lived in Ryegate and Hartford before moving to Windsor thirty years ago. He married Viola Darling in 1964.

He was a member of the VFW Post #2571 and the Hartford Legion Post #26, both in White River Jct. He enjoyed driving oxen, hunting, woodworking, and gardening.

He was predeceased by his wife, by a brother, Weston Whitcomb; and by three sisters: Ruth Falzarano, Helen Whitcomb and Laurenza Whitcomb.

Survivors include an adopted daughter, Diane Dery of Worcester, Mass., a sister, Anna Washburn of Bethel; grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Aug. 15 at 11 a.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor with Rev. Carter Adriance, pastor of the Rachel S. Harlow United Methodist Church in Windsor officiating. Committal services followed at 1:30 p.m. at the Groton Village cemetery in Groton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Activity Fund at the Springfield Health and Rehabilitation Center, 105 Chester Road, Springfield, 05156, Visiting Nurse Alliance of Vt. & N.H., c/o Mt. Ascutney Hospital & Health Center, 289 County Road, Windsor, 05089 or to a charity of your choice.

Laura "Jean" Somerville

RANDOLPH — Laura "Jean" Somerville, 68, of Randolph, died suddenly Monday evening, Aug. 21 at Gifford Medical Center.

She was born January 22, 1932 in Randolph; the daughter of Lewis V. and Ida J. (Grant) Chambers. She graduated from Randolph High School and attended the nursing program at U.V.M. for two years. She was married to Weldon Dean Somerville in Texas in 1952. A lifetime Randolph resident, she had wintered in Winter Park, Florida, where she had worked for the Dept. of Business and Professional Regulation in Orlando. She was a member of the West Oaks United Methodist Church in Ocoee, Florida, and she enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include her husband, Weldon Dean Somerville of Randolph; mother, Ida J. Chambers of Orlando, Fla.; sons, Jerry M. Somerville of Winter Park, Fla.; Jack A. Somerville and John D. Somerville, both of Orlando, Fla.; daughters, Judy C. Conway and Jill K. Stevenson, both of Orlando, Fla.; and Jane M. Barbee of North Carolina; brother, Louis R. Chambers of New York City, N.Y.; sister, Polly Slack, of Bethel, and 10 grandchildren.

Graveside Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25 at the Pleasant View cemetery in Randolph. Contributions in her memory may be made to: The American Heart Association, Vermont Affiliate, P.O. Box 485, Williston, Vt. 05495.

Arrangements are by the Day Funeral Home, in Randolph.

George Brett

St. Peters, Fla. — George Brett McKinney, 77, a former Randolph resident, died Sunday evening, July 30 at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Fla.

He was born July 19, 1923 in Pittsburgh, Penn.; the son of James and Claire (Brett) McKinney. He graduated from the University of Connecticut, and lived for many years in the Randolph-Bethel area, moving to Florida in December 1999. He will be remembered for his many hours of work and management of the Pinnacle Skiways in Randolph.

A U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, he was recipient of the Bronze Star. He was married to Dolly McKinney, and for the past 22 years to Martha McKinney.

He leaves his wife, Martha in Florida; former wife, Dolly McKinney of E. Randolph; two sons, Peter and Michael; two daughters, Susan Hines and Jane Pinello; two step-sons, Liam and Neil; stepdaughter, Ann; his sister, Louise Warner and her husband, Frederick; and several grandchildren.

Graveside Services will be held at 2 p.m., Wed. Aug. 30 at the Vermont Veterans Memorial cemetery in Randolph Center, with Rev. Kathy Eddy, officiating. Arrangements are by the Day Funeral Home, in Randolph.

Janice M. MacAskill

WILLIAMSTOWN — Janice M. MacAskill, 84, of South Hill Road, died Fri. Aug. 18, 2000 at her home.

Born in Williamstown Sept. 16, 1915, she was the daughter of William P. and Ella (Whitney) Briggs. She attended South Hill School and Village School in Williamstown and graduated as valedictorian from Williamstown High School in the class of 1933.

In early years, she had worked at the Ainsworth Public Library in Williamstown, was one of Williamstown’s news correspondents for the Barre Daily Times, and had written articles and poetry for other publications.

She married Donald R. Mac Askill Aug. 16, 1945 at her parent’s home in Williamstown. They made their home in Chelsea until moving to Williamstown in 1954. He died July 14, 1999.

While living in Chelsea, she was a member of the United Church there and had taught in its Sunday school. After moving to Williams-town, she became a member of the United Federated (Methodist) Church and taught Sunday school. She was an alternate lay delegate to the Troy Methodist Conference for several years.

In 1975, Mr. and Mrs. MacAskill helped re-establish the Williams-town Historical Society and Mrs. MacAskill was curator. Together they worked on all aspects of publishing "A History of Williams-town, Vermont, 1781-1991." In 1997, she was named "Curator Emeritus." That same year, they were also honored by Justin S. Morrill Pamona Grange as citizens of the year for their civic contributions.

She especially enjoyed journalism, house planning, flowers, reading, history of family and friends, and Williamstown history. In early years, she was a member of the Home Project Club of Williamstown.

Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-laws, Lee and Peg MacAskill and Norman and Phyllis MacAskill, all of Williamstown; seven grandchildren and spouses, Robert and Shari MacAskill, James and Barbara MacAskill, Elizabeth MacAskill, Stuart MacAskill, Chris MacAskill, Scott and Heather Mac Askill; four great-grandchildren, Kyle MacAksill, Justin MacAskill, Michael MacAskill and Steffen Flibotte; a sister, Lila Walbridge of Williamstown; nieces and nephews.

Her funeral service was Monday, Aug 21 at the United Federated (Methodist) Church in Williamstown. Interment followed in the Wilson cemetery in Websterville. There were no calling hours.
