John Farmer

BETHEL — John Farmer, 84, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000 at the Menig Elder Care in Randolph.

He was born in Boston Mass., January 22, 1916, the son of Sidney Farmer (mother unknown). He was educated in South Braintree, Mass. schools. He came to Vermont in 1944.

He worked at Fyles and Rice Lumber Co. in Bethel for 20 years and as a machine maintenance person at G.W. Plastics for many years, retiring in 1986.

He enjoyed baseball, especially the N.Y. Yankees. He was a member and past sexton of the United Church in Bethel.

He married Rebecca Colby November 22, 1947 in Woodstock.

He leaves his wife of Bethel, a son, Rodney Farmer of St. Albans; four daughters: Cynthia Jean Bushey of West Brookfield, Marcia Tuthill of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Mary Ellen Benson of Royalton, and Marguerite Lambert of Charleston, N.H.; and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 25, at 2:30 p.m., at the United Church in Bethel with Rev. Kent Lipka officiating. Burial will be later in the Old Christ Church cemetery. There are no calling hours.

Donations may be made to the Vermont Achievement Center, P.O. Box 488, 88 Park Street, Rutland, Vt. 05701. Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home.

Fred Sanborn, M.D.

SOUTH ROYALTON — Frederick Sanborn, M.D., 88, died Thursday morning, April 26, 2001, after a long battle with cancer.

He was born Sept. 23, 1912 in Winchester, Mass; the son of Harry C. and Carolyn L. (Ellard) Sanborn. He attended Winchester schools, graduating in 1930 from Winchester High school. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1934 and Dartmouth Medical School in 1935. He then attended Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts graduating in 1937.

On July 5, 1941 he married Mary Louise Ainsworth in South Royalton, Vt. He was a veteran who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in China and New Zealand. After being discharged from the Navy in 1946, he worked at the VA Hospital in Chelsea, Mass., He worked many years at the Barnstable County Hospital in Pocasset, Mass., retiring in 1969.

In 1972 he and Mary moved to their home on Oxbow Road in South Royalton. Mary died September 10, 1990, while vacationing in Inverness, Scotland.

He is survived by a son, Robert A. Sanborn of South Royalton, a daughter, Carolyn R. Sanborn of Albuquerque, N. Mex. and three grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.

At his request there will be no calling hours or funeral service. The Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home, Main Street, Chelsea is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Alliance of Vt. & N.H., Inc., 36 South Main Street, Randolph, Vt. 05060.

Donald E. Boles

SOUTH ROYALTON — Donald E. Boles, 62, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001 at his home in South Royalton. He was born Sept. 20, 1938 in South Royalton, the son of John I. And Elizabeth M. (Rowel) Boles.

He attended schools in South Royalton, and began working at a young age at Windsor County Feeds. On June 14, 1957, he married Phyllis Parker in South Royalton. They lived for a short time in Rochester where he farmed.

He was a "Jack of all trades" and a tireless worker. He worked construction for Connecticut River Valley Construction, Lavenna Construction out of Rutland, and on and off for his brother Alex Boles. He was employed at Beacon Feed at Bethel Mill Grain in Bethel and Brailey’s Feed Store in South Royalton. He farmed at the Edson Gifford Farm in East Randolph and throughout his life he did masonry work. Most recently he was employed at Vermont Log Homes where he had worked for six years, retiring this past June.

He loved to dance and for several years was active with the Ed Larkin Contra Dancers. Both he and his wife danced with the Contra Dancers during the Tunbridge Fair. He always enjoyed a good game of Yahtzee or cribbage. He threw shoes in the Sharon Horseshoe League where he and his sons helped to build the horseshoe pits. He also pitched shoes at Ed Parker’s (his brother-in-law, ) in White River Jct., He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his honesty, his warm and friendly smile and his love of children.

He is survived by his wife of South Royalton, two sons; Paul Boles of Sharon and Steven Boles of South Royalton; two grandchildren; Lindsey and Darren Boles of Sharon; six brothers; Leslie Boles, Frank Boles and Alexander Boles all of South Royalton; Robert Boles of East Bethel, Matthew Boles of North Tunbridge, and Ernest Boles of Royalton; a sister, Gena Britch of North Tunbridge; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, John Boles, and a sister, Louise Boles Churchill.

Calling hours were held April 26 at the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea. The funeral service was held April 27 at the United Church of South Royalton. The church was filled to standing room only with Rev. James Proctor officiating. Paul Roy on the piano and Harold Luce and Wayne Doyle on the fiddles played "Wildwood Flower" and "Old Rugged Cross, " Don’s sister-in-law, Dorothea Boles, read a poem written by Donald’s niece, Monica Clark. Kathy Benson, another of Don’s nieces also shared a poem. The organist was Carol Rousseau and the pall bearers included Sheldon Amell, Lenny Amell, Robin Boles, Stanley Parker, Roger Clark and Stewart Holmes.

A committal service was held immediately following the church service in the Branch View cemetery in South Royalton. A reception was held later at the Boles home.

Donald Jennings

ROXBURY — SFC Donald J. Jennings, U.S. Army (ret.), 74, died Sunday, July 20, 2003. He was born July 7, 1929, in Port Byron, N.Y., the oldest son of Edythe (Kenny) Jennings and Frank Jennings

He married Mary L. DuPlessis of Syracuse, N.Y., Aug. 12, 1952.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in October, 1946, and served until his retirement in February of 1969. He began his career in the 38th Mountain Infantry, Camp Carson, Colo. While there, he became part of the U.S. Army Rock Climbing Demonstration Team, and was an alternate for the U.S. Olympic Biathlon Team.

He also served with the 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, and in several Korean War campaigns. On his return to the U.S., he was stationed at Camp Carson, Colo., as an instructor in skiing, mountaineering, and survival, in the Mountain Training Command.

In 1957, he was assigned to the military faculty at Norwich University as a Senior Mountain and Cold Weather Instructor, remaining at Norwich until his retirement from the service in 1969.

He co-founded the Norwich University Mountain Rescue Team, and was the first rescue director for the State of Vermont. SFC Jennings was also instrumental in the founding of the Vermont State Police Search and Rescue Team.

After his retirement, Sgt. Jennings built and managed the Norwich University Ski Area until 1983, at which time he went into private business.

Survivors include his wife, Mary L. Jennings of Roxbury; five sons, David Jennings of Northfield, Michael Jennings of Newbury, Scott Jennings of Newbury, William Jennings of West Berlin, and Robert Leary of Roxbury; four brothers, Richard of Fayetteville, N.C., Kenneth of San Antonio, Texas, William of Auburn, N.Y., and Robert of Rutland; five sisters, Frances Andrews of Auburn, N.Y., Mary Jones of Toano, Va., Nancy White of Philadelphia, Penna., Suzanne Nolan of Auburn, N.Y., and Marjorie Jennings of Syracuse, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, Audrey Jennings of Los Angeles, Calif., Michelle Drake of Newbury, Donald Jennings of Norwich, Alan Jennings of West Berlin, Marie Jennings of West Berlin, Kari Jennings of Northfield and Kathleen Jennings of Northfield; two great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Kailey Drake of Newbury; many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, John Jennings.

There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be conducted Monday, July 28 at 1 p.m. in the Vermont Veterans cemetery in Randolph Center, with full military honors accorded.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Central Vermont Home Health & Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Berlin, Vt., 05641.

Kingston Funeral Home in Northfield is in charge of the arrangements.

Wilford Davis

SUMMERFIELD, FLA. — Wilford "Ardin" Davis, 72, formerly of Sharon, died Friday, July 18, 2003, at his home.

He was born March 5, 1931 in Braintree, the son of Charles and Lula (Johndro) Davis.

He attended Braintree schools and served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Sally Royce Aug. 25, 1951 in Braintree. He worked as an engineering technician for Split Ballbearing (now Timken Aerospace) in Lebanon, N.H., for over 30 years, retiring in 1993.

The Davises moved from Sharon, to Summerfield, Fla. in 1993. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed riding his bicycle.

Survivors include his wife, Sally Davis of Summerfield, Fla.; two sons: Chuck Davis and Vaughan Davis, both of Lebanon, N.H.; two daughters: Judi Barra of Huntington, Mass. and Debra Follensbee of Summerfield, Fla.; two brothers; Richard Davis of Randolph and Norman Davis of Sharon; four sisters: Audrey Lemery of Northfield, Geneva Deyette and Fleda Stone, both of Braintree; and Charlene Ghelback of Essex Junction; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

He was pre-deceased by a son, Richard Davis.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 23 at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph. Calling hours were held Tuesday evening. A private burial took place in the Mountain View cemetery, Braintree.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Vermont Division, 13 Loomis St., Montpelier, Vt. 05602.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home, Randolph.
