Raymond Braune

Longtime Rochester and Stockbridge resident Raymond Braune passed away at the age of 83 while at home on November 5, 2010 after a long struggle with kidney disease.

After being raised in Fitchburg, Massachusetts and serving with distinction in the U.S. Army during World War II, Ray worked as a chemist in the budding aviation/aerospace industry near Los Angeles. It was here where he immersed himself in West Coast jazz -especially Howard Rumsey’s Lighthouse All-Stars at The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach. After leaving IBM in the 1960s with multiple patents (including one for properties associated with underwater adhesives), Ray built, fairway by fairway out of cornfields over four years, the White River Golf Club, which he operated until 1989 prior to retiring to his home on Music Mountain in Stockbridge.

Throughout his life, Ray was a generous, iconoclastic, loyal, and humorous person who believed you should “leave a place better than you found it”. He practiced this axiom first as a chemist, as an entrepreneur and grass management steward at the golf course, as a ski teacher at area resorts including Killington, Sugarbush and Mad River Glen, and finally by cultivating his land in Stockbridge. His love of Vermont, golf and skiing, science, literature, the Red Sox, his red 1969 Chrysler convertible, and the best of West Coast jazz brought him much enjoyment - especially in retirement, when he made frequent trips to southern California to enjoy and document through video the jazz that he first celebrated in his youth. At home, Ray enjoyed poring over the Sunday circulars for sales on porterhouse steak or chicken as he prepared to host large dinner parties and barbeques for family and a group of longtime friends whom he deemed “All the usual suspects”.

He is survived by two sons: Rex Alison, 44, of Redondo Beach, California; and Jamie Gage, 41, of Randolph, Vermont, daughter-in-law Kristen and grandchildren Dylan, Aidan, and Elia Gage, all of Randolph, Vermont, who knew Ray lovingly as “Bumpo” over the last many years of his life. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family appreciates everyone who helped during this extended and difficult time. In particular, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Judy Jacques, Ray’s caregiver over his last weeks and months.

While there will be no funeral services, there will be a gathering of remembrance in the Spring of next year at his home in Stockbridge. For more information about the Spring gathering, to leave messages, or to join the mailing list, please visit https://www.raybraune.com. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memoriam to the Los Angeles Jazz Institute - https://www.lajazzinstitute.org.

Al believed in living off the land and purchased the old O’Donnell farm in Chelsea where he restored the original farmhouse, raised cattle, pigs, and chickens; and grew apple trees, strawberries, and a vegetable garden. He hayed his fields in the summer and had a maple orchard he sugared in the spring. He butchered his own farm animals and frequently helped other farmers do the same. Al was a well respected and sought after handy man that was always available to help those in need whether it was a mechanical, heating, plumbing, or building project that needed to be done.

Although Al did not have any family in Vermont, many neighbors and friends welcomed him as part of their families and he will be missed greatly by all, especially by the members of "Al’s Committee." In the last years of his life Al suffered from Parkinson’s disease, but received excellent care by the doctors, nurses, and staff at Menig. Donations in Al’s memory can be made to the Menig Nursing Home, Gifford Medical Center, Randolph, VT. Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home of Chelsea, VT is in charge of arrangements.
