ROBERT F. COLTON
(Died February 1, 2012)

Pittsfield - Robert F. Colton, 90, a lifelong resident of Pittsfield died Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at his home.

He was born in Pittsfield, in the house that was his lifelong home, the son of Ray and Alma (Fisk) Colton.

He graduated from Whitcomb High School in 1939 and from Vermont School of Agriculture, in Randolph, in 1940. His father died in 1940, leaving Robert to take over the family farm, in Pittsfield, at the age of 18. He married Virginia Gilmore in 1946 and the made their lifelong home together at the Colton Farm in Pittsfield. When the barns burned in 1956, he got a job working for the U.S. Government, Soil Conservation Service and worked there for 25 years. He enjoyed hunting, stream fishing, fishing with his boys on “the boat” on Lake Champlain or Lake Ontario. He tended the horses and loved riding his 4-wheeler. He did maple sugaring and grew sweet corn and sold both on his front porch on the “honor system”. He enjoyed the Pittsfield Historical Society. He held an annual fishing derby at his pond every spring for the local children to enjoy. He loved to teach his grandchildren to hunt and fish. He is survived by his wife Virginia and his sons Ray Colton and Ronald Colton, his daughter Ruth Hall, son-in-law Ronald Coughenour, grandchildren; Christi Bollman, Jennifer Stratton, Tammy Bradley, Ronald Colton II, Jordon Hall, Rebecca Hall, Carrie Kohl, Gabrielle Coughenour and 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a much loved daughter Reeta Coughenour in 1997 and his sister Ruth Lewis in 2009.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 4th, 2:00 P.M. at the Pittsfield Federated Church with Rev. Howard Gunter officiating. A calling hour will be held at the church from 1:00 P.M. until the time of the service. Private burial will be in the Pittsfield Village cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pittsfield Federated Church, Pittsfield, VT 05762.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home, Randolph.

LINDA E. LEFEBVRE
(Died January 29, 2012)

Randolph - Linda E. Lefebvre, 64, died Sunday, January 29, 2012 at her home in Randolph.

She was born April 19, 1947 in S. Barre the daughter of Joseph and Orilla (Landry) Chartier.

Linda was raised in S. Barre and Barre. She attended Barre schools and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1965. She was married to Bernard Lefebvre May 7, 1966 at St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Barre and had made her home in Randolph since. Linda had worked at Merrimaid Manufacturing in Randolph and most recently at K-Mart in W. Lebanon, NH. She was a member of St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Barre. Linda enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles.

She is survived by her husband Bernard Lefebvre and her 2 sons; Henry Lefebvre and Joseph Lefebvre all of Randolph, 5 sisters; Lorraine Chouinard of Saratoga Springs, NY, Yvonne Bradley of Mesquite, NV, Gloria Forrend of Troy, Bernice Dudley of Barre and Sandra Simpson of Montpelier, a brother Richard Chartier of Mesquite, NV and many nieces, nephews and aunts. She was predeceased by her parents, 2 brothers; Joseph and Antoine Chartier and a niece Amy Chouinard.

Graveside memorial services will be held at the Randolph Center cemetery at a date and time to be announced later. There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 55 Day Lane, Williston, VT 05495 or to Visiting Nurses and Hospice of VT & NH, PO Box 976, White River Jct., VT 05001.

LYLE THORNTON WOLF
(July 10, 1927 - January 13, 2012)

Bethel, VT - Lyle Thornton Wolf passed from this life on Friday, January 13, 2012.

Lyle was born on July 10, 1927 in Los Angeles, California. He studied music at UCLA and sang professionally in Las Vegas with Johnny Mann. After determining this was a “good way to starve”, he returned to UCLA where he graduated with a Bachelor Degree in history and received his Master Degree at the University of London. He taught in the Los Angeles school system for 24 years and in Newfoundland for several years for the U.S. Army.

In 1981, he moved to Bethel, Vermont and purchased the Greenhurst Inn, where he enjoyed meeting people from all over the world and entertaining them with music and political debate. He is remembered by many from his local performances with local theater groups and the Mud Season Talent Shows.

He is survived by his daughter, Claire Osborne of Utah, one sister, Lynette Straley of California, two brothers, Merritt Wolf of Idaho and Dean Wolf of California and longtime friend and companion Diane Spambanato of Bethel.

He was predeceased by his son, Derek Wolf.

At Lyle's request, there are no calling hours or services planned. A weekend of music and reminiscence in celebration of his life is planned for this summer.

CONSTANCE E. NILAND
(December 24, 1917 - January 13, 2012)

Randolph, VT - CONSTANCE E. NILAND, 94, of Randolph, died peacefully, surrounded by her family, Friday afternoon, January 13, 2012 at Gifford Medical Center, after a long life and short illness.

She was born December 24, 1917 in Everett, MA; the daughter of Ernest & Bertha (Hampton) Allingham. She graduated from Malden, MA High School in 1935, and was married to William F. Niland in Boston on June 21, 1941. She had lived in Peabody, MA before moving to Barnard, VT in 1972. Connie had worked as an Administrative Assistant at Dartmouth College and Vermont Law School, and loved modern technology. She enjoyed golf, horseback riding with her husband, mahjongg, travelling, doing puzzles, and reading. She was an active member of the Edwin Thompson Senior Center in Woodstock, and the Randolph Senior Center.

Her survivors include her sons, William Niland, Jr., and his wife, Sara of Topsfield, MA, and Richard Niland and friend, Stacy Roope of Danvers, MA; daughters, Pamela Niland of Peabody, MA and Lisa Hill and her husband, Paul of Bethel; ten grandchildren, William Niland III, Christopher Niland, Jeremy Niland, Leah Niland, Ronald Andrews, Jason Andrews, Jonathan Andrews, Elizabeth Andrews, Kelsey Hill and Deven Hill; great-grandchildren, Alexandra Niland, Samantha Niland, Matthew Niland, Nicholas Niland, Savannah Saco-Andrews, Madyson Saco-Andrews, Malia Niland, and Arielle Lazarou. She was predeceased by her husband, William in 1972, and by brother, Richard Allingham and sister, Phyllis Nixon.

Memorial Services will be held at 1:30pm Saturday, January 21, 2012 at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph, with Pastor Thomas Harty, officiating. Calling hour is from 12:30pm-1:30pm Saturday. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Kimball Public Libray or the Bethel Free Library.

GILDA ELIZABETH EATON
(Died January 11, 2012)

Granville - Gilda Elizabeth Eaton, 62, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at Gifford Medical Center surrounded by her family, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Middlebury on July 6, 1949 the daughter of Lloyd and Lucretia (Howland) Foley.

Gilda graduated from Rochester High School. On August 29, 1970 she married Richard Eaton in Hancock. They made their home and raised their family in Granville. Among her interests were horses, reading and gardening but most of all she loved spending time with her family, friends and grandchildren.

Survivors include one daughter Julie Leonard of Braintree, two sons Willis Eaton of Williamstown, Richard Eaton, Jr. of Waterford, husband Richard Eaton of Granville, five grandchildren, mother Lucretia Foley of New York, sister Barbara Garr of North Carolina, two brothers Lloyd Foley, Jr., Jack Foley both of New York and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father Lloyd Foley.

A graveside service will be held in Hancock in the spring. Memorial may be made to Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, One Medical Center Dr., Lebanon, NH 03756.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home, Randolph.

ABBIE CLARA HOWE MITCHELL
(January 3, 1915 - January 9, 2012)

Abbie Clara (Howe) Mitchell, 97, of Randolph, died early Monday morning, January 9, 2012 at Gifford Medical Center.

She was born January 3, 1915 in Tunbridge, VT; the eldest daughter of James K. and S. Marion (Whitney) Howe. She graduated from South Royalton High School in 1933, and the University of Vermont in 1937 where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She taught school in Randolph, VT for three years before marrying Richard S. Mitchell on July 5, 1940. Abbie worked for Randolph Savings and Loan for 25 years, ten of those as manager, then through the bank’s transition to Vermont Federal Bank. She served on the Randolph School Board for several years in the 1950’s. Abbie enjoyed knitting, playing cards, gardening, and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her three daughters, Martha (Marty) Barclay and her husband, Hugh of Rutland, VT, Jane Hayward and her husband, Pierce of Melrose, MA, and Pat Davis and her husband, Chip of Hampstead, NC; sisters, Ida Wright of Greenville, SC, Ellen Hamilton and her husband, Joe of West Brattleboro, VT, Mary White of Winchendon, MA, and Hazel McNamara of Plainfield, NH; brother, Luke Howe of Safety Harbor, FL; sister-in-law, Barbara Howe of Tunbridge; grandchildren, Stephen Barclay of Randolph, David Barclay and wife, Bonnie of Knoxville, TN, Thomas Barclay and wife, Brandi of Rutland, Kathryn (Barclay) Trafton and husband, Scott of Bennington, Jill (Hayward) Adkins and husband, Charlie of Lindenhurst, IL, Lee Hayward and wife, Barbara Garbin of East Longmeadow, MA; Jenni Davis of Tampa, FL, and Alyssa Davis of Knoxville, TN; great-grandchildren, Allison and Ryan Barclay of Knoxville, TN, Alexandra and Andrew Adkins of Lindenhurst, IL, Emma and Alexis Barclay of Rutland, Emily Hutson of Winter Garden, FL, Niccolo and Sebastiano Hayward of East Longmeadow, MA, and Abbie Clara Trafton of Bennington; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Richard in 1993; brothers, Charlie, John and Mark Howe, and infant daughter, Suzanne. The family wishes to give special thanks to her grandson, Stephen Barclay who lived with her for 13 years, her niece, Barrie Allen, and caregivers Mary Fuller and Teri LaRocque.

Memorial Services at Bethany United Church of Christ in Randolph will be announced at a later date, with burial following at Pleasant View cemetery in Randolph. There are no calling hours. Contributions in her memory may be made to Bethany Church, 30 N. Main Street, Randolph, VT 05060 or to Gifford Medical Center, Garden Room Fund, P.O. Box 2000, Randolph, VT 05060.

ELIZABETH "BETTY" HYDE
(Died January 6, 2012)

E. Bethel - Elizabeth “Betty” V. Hyde, 90, died Friday, January 6, 2012 at her home in E. Bethel.

She was born February 14, 1921 in Woodstock the daughter of Ernest and Fannie (Arnold) Tenney.

Betty graduated from S. Royalton High School in 1939. She was married to George C. Hyde in June of 1941 in Bethel and had made her home in E. Bethel since. After raising their children, Betty worked as a librarian in the Bethel area. She was well known throughout this area and even into Canada as a dog trainer. She also showed dogs and gave obedience training courses for many years. She also enjoyed doing pottery.

She is survived by her husband George Hyde of E. Bethel, 3 sons; Paul Hyde of Essex Jct., Thomas Hyde and Mark Hyde both of Washington, IL, a daughter Judith Curtis of Payson, AZ, 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by 2 brothers; Myron and Raymond Tenney and a sister Hilda Turner.

At Betty’s request there will be no public services. Private burial will be in the E. Bethel cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to your local humane society.
