Robert Eschmann
3/19/1933 - 12/5/2010

Robert Eschmann, of Crow Hill, Danville, passed away at NVRH Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010 at the age of 77.

He was born in Paterson, New Jersey and for years resided on Hillcrest Ave. in Hawthorne, New Jersey. Following Bob’s service in the US Air Force during the Korean conflict, he went on to a career as an air traffic controller at Morristown, JFK, and Newark airports. He was a lifetime NRA member and an avid hunter. The Eschmanns, after Bob’s 30 years of service, retired to Vermont in 1985.

He is survived by his wife Alice (Oppelaar) of Danville, two sons: Carl Eschmann of Danville, Kurt Eschmann and wife Janet and their two children Breanna and Jacob of Concord.

A celebration of his life will be held next Saturday, Dec. 18 at 1PM at the New Beginnings Christian Church located at 72 Moose River Dr. in St. Johnsbury.

Memorial contributions, marked Robert Eschmann’s name for hospice care, could be directed to either: Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, 1 Medical Center Dr., Lebanon NH 03756; or to Northeastern VT Regional Hospital, PO Box 905, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819.

Frederick C. Petre, Jr.

Frederick C. ‘Pete’ Petre, Jr., 88, of Sheffield, Vermont died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010 in Vermont.

Pete was proud to be an American. He served his country in The Navy during “The War”, was primary stationed at Guantanamo, Cuba and was honorably discharged Oct. 2, 1945. He was a lifelong member of the Stony Creek Fife and Drum corps and a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.

He was born in Branford, Connecticut Oct. 6, 1922, the son of Frederick C. Petre, Sr. and Esther (Bromley) Petre. He retired as control room operator with the South Central Regional Water Authority in New Haven, Connecticut. Previously he had been a carpenter by trade.

The Petres moved to Vermont in 1988. He was a lifelong Mason and a proud member of the Shriners of North America; he rose to the rank of Knight Templar with the New Haven Commandery #2.

He is survived by his wife Polly (Barker) whom he married Jan. 18, 1947; their three children: Leslie Palm and her husband Frank of Killingworth CT, Rick Petre of Sheffield VT, Terri Sylvester and her husband Raymond of Branford CT. In 1985 he was predeceased by his only grandchild, Jeffrey Palm, who died of leukemia. He is also survived by his sister Norma Zielinski and her husband Benjamin of Branford CT, nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by a brother James known as ‘Butch’.

There will be no services at this time. His family is planning on doing a tribute late spring/early summer and will announce their plans later. His cremated remains will be buried at the Westlook cemetery in Glover VT at a later date.

Rodney F. Easter, Sr.
7/14/1936 - 11/25/2010

Rodney F. Easter Sr., 74, of East Haven, died Thursday November 25, 2010 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH with his family by his side.

He was born July 14, 1936 in St. Johnsbury, VT the son of Floyd and Edith (Shastany) Easter. Rod graduated from St. Johnsbury Trade School in 1954.

On September 9, 1955 he married M. Jean Rivers. They lived in St. Johnsbury before moving to East Haven in 1966.

Rod worked in the automotive repair business for over forty years. For thirty years he was the Service Manager for Vinton Motors in St. Johnsbury. Following retirement he worked part time for Brighton Garage in Island Pond.

Rod was active in his East Haven community, serving as Selectman and filling other Town positions over the years. He was a founding member of the East Haven Volunteer Fire Department. He also was a founding member of the East Haven Drift Skippers Snow-Mobil Club, and a member of V.A.S.T., who spent many years building and improving snow mobile trails.

He was an avid NASCAR fan. During the 1960’s he was the mechanic of race car #87 at Northeastern Speedway in Waterford, that was driven by Glen Gadapee.

Camping and helping out at Lakeside Campground in Brighton, and hunting, brought him much pleasure. He was always available to help family, friends, and neighbors when needed.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years, Jean Easter of East Haven; two children, Rodney Easter Jr. and his partner Dianne Rivers of Newark, and Lynn Masure and her husband Michael of East Haven; three special grandchildren, Joshua Simpson, Ethan and Haley Masure; three brothers, Lionel “Skip” Easter and wife Carol of Victory, Donald Easter and wife Bonnie of Barnet, and Douglas Easter and partner Hilde Sparrow of East Burke; a sister, Roxann Stacy and husband AJ of N. Carolina; his in-laws, Madelyn Easter, Brenda Easter, Glen and Linda Gadapee, Robert and Shirley Rivers, Scott and Linda Rivers, Dorothy and John Houghton, Judy and Robert Bickford, Lena Mitchell, Rachel and Charlie Cole, Rochelle and Randy Simpson, and Margaret and George Humphrey; many nieces and nephews; his special friends, Ken and Nancy White; and his loving dog Midget.

He was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, James “Bud” Easter, Eugene “Gene” Easter, and Paul Easter; a sister in-law, Ann Gadapee; and a brother in-law, Roger Mitchell.

A Memorial service will be held in Lyndonville on Wednesday December 1, at 11:00 AM at the Guibord Funeral Home with Mr. John Sleeper officiating. Burial in East Haven cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call on the family Tuesday evening from 6-8 at the funeral home.

Donations made in his memory may be directed to, North Country Federal Credit Union, In Care of Rodney Easter, P. O. Box 775, Lyndonville, VT 05851. These funds will be used for his special grandchildren’s college fund.

Guibord Funeral Home is located on the corner of Main and Center Streets, Lyndonville.

Patricia Z. Thibodeau
10/26/1933 - 11/27/2010

Patricia Thibodeau, of 331 Summer St. in St. Johnsbury, passed away at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010 at the age 77.

She was born Oct. 26, 1933 in Syracuse, New York, the daughter of Benjamin and Anna (Stankiewicz) Zielinski. She was an able registered nurse and spent the bulk of her nursing career at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.

Pat and Rene came to St. Johnsbury and bought their home on Summer St. in 2001. They were instrumental members of the Four Season Neighborhood and were communicants of St. John the Evangelist Church.

She is survived by her husband Rene; their son Jacques Thibodeau of Medford MA; a brother Mitchell Zielinski of Chittenango NY; nieces Christine and Ann. She was predeceased by a sister Ann Zielinski.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Johnsbury Thursday, Dec. 2, at 11AM at St. John the Evangelist Church with Fr. Dwight Baker the celebrant.

Anyone wishing to offer their condolences to the family may stop at the funeral home between 9:30AM to 10:30AM prior to the Mass.

Jason Thomas Prescott
2/23/1970 - 11/24/2010

Jason Prescott, 40, of St. Johnsbury, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010 at the Union House Nursing Home in Glover.

On the way to his job as a carpenter on Oct. 31, 1988, Jason sustained severe injuries in an automobile accident in Plainfield. He spent the next year at the Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington and was transferred to the Berlin Convalescent Center where he resided for 6-7 years. For the past 14 years, he has resided in Glover at The Union House Nursing Home where he received much loving, compassionate care.

He was born in Hartford, Connecticut on Feb. 23, 1970, the son of Carolyn (LaCourse) and Thomas R. Prescott. He went to schools in Walden and attended St. Johnsbury Academy. Jason loved camping, fishing, hunting, anything to do with the outdoors.

He is survived by his mother and father, Carolyn and Dwight F. Davis, Sr. of Kirby; his biological father Thomas Prescott of Enfield CT; his maternal grandmother Ella Robertson formerly of Walden now residing at The St. Johnsbury House; three brothers: Quint W. Prescott and wife Faith of Glover, Kenneth R. Prescott and wife Tina of Danville, Robert J. Silver and wife Jennifer of Lyndonville; several nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

He was predeceased by his younger brother, James L. Silver, Jr. 32 years ago to the day; by his maternal grandfather Leo LaCourse, and by his paternal grandparents Violet and Richard Prescott.

A visiting hour will be held at the Sayles Funeral Home Thursday, Dec. 2, from 4-5PM and will conclude with a memorial service at 5PM led by The Rev. John Marshall. Later on the family will have his urn buried at The Cabot Plains cemetery.

Phyllis Prescott Flanders

ESSEX JUNCTION -- Phyllis Prescott Flanders, 75, formerly of Essex Junction, passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2000, following a long illness.

She was born Sept. 23, 1924 in Walden, N.Y., the daughter of John and Elizabeth Chase.

She was married to Raymond Prescott for 35 years, then to William "Bill" D. Flanders for 16 years.

Phyllis owned and operated Chase Hardware & Lumber in Wallkill, N.Y. until 1965, then was employed at Flanders Lumber Company in Essex Junction.

Phyllis is survived by her sons, Leigh Prescott and his son, Miles; and Keith Prescott and his wife, Mary and their daughters, Dia and Orianna; and her stepson, Dana Flanders and his son, Will. She is also survived by her cat, Katie. She was predeceased by her daughter, Alice Prescott and her husband, Bill Flanders.

A small family service will take place in St. Simon's Island, Ga. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends enjoy a beautiful sunset and think of Phyllis and their loved ones.

A. Eunice Gallup

ESSEX JUNCTION - A. Eunice Gallup, 75, of Whitcomb Woods died Friday, July 28, 2000 in Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

She was born in Malden, Mass., April 2, 1925, the daughter of Human and Celia (Abber) Gelin.

She was a graduate of Malden High School, Class of 1943.

Eunice is survived by five children and their spouses, Linda Colombe of St. Johnsbury, Judi and Howard Anderson of East Barre, Patty and Gary Johnson of Colchester, Timothy and Patricia Gallup of Tulsa, Okla., and Laurie and Michael Wells of Jericho; nine grandchildren, Becki, Heather, Gretchen, Shannon, Tayler, Jennifer, Nathan, Michael and Candi; two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Tyler; one sister, Carol Toronto of Mass.; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Eunice also leaves her dear friends, Raynelle Tucker and Elaine Barton.

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 30 in the Ready Funeral Home Mountain View Chapel with burial following in Fairview cemetery in Essex Junction. Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 11 Loomis St., Montpelier, VT 05602.

Sean Thomas Jarvis

CAPITOLLA, CA - Sean Thomas Jarvis of Capitolla, CA, died Saturday, June 9, 2001.

He was born on April 22, 1968, in Burlington, the son of Charles H. and Marilyn (Curtin) Jarvis. He grew up in Morrisville, graduating from Peoples Academy in 1985.

Sean married his soul mate Gillian (McGuire) Jarvis on December 21, 2000.

Sean had worked at P & C and Price Chopper as night manager until he moved to California in 1993. After his move, he continued working in the grocery business, first at Greentree Markets in Santa Cruz and then at Whole Foods in San Jose.

While in California, Sean discovered the challenge of physical activities leading to his participation in triathlon. Sean had competed in Canada and the United States, one race having been in Lake Placid, NY, August 15, 1999, where family and friends on the East Coast were able to attend and enjoy his success. Sean is survived by his beloved wife Gillian; his parents, Charles H. Jarvis, of Monterey, CA and Marilyn C. Jarvis, of Morrisville; maternal grandmother, Margaret Curtin, of Pawcatuck, CT; a brother, Joel Jarvis, of Morrisville; a sister, Gretchen Jarvis, her partner Brian Judkins and their children, Brandon, Taylor and Dailyn, of Hyde Park; a special friend, Bob Heinbokel, of Monterey, CA; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. His sister, Allison Jarvis, maternal uncle, Brad Curtin, and grandparents Thomas P. Curtin, Douglas and Edna (Ward) Jarvis preceded him in death.

A private family internment was held at Isle LaMotte cemetery in Isle Lamotte on Sunday, June 17, 2001. Services will be held in California on July 1, 2001. Pacific Garden’s Chapel, Santa Cruz, CA, was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Clayton Vanderhoven

CAMBRIDGE - Thomas Clayton Vanderhoven, 94, of South Main Street, Cambridge passed away peacefully at his home, Thursday evening, June 14, 2001. He was born March 18, 1907 in Rahway, NJ, son of the late Jesse William and Mary Ellen (O’Conner) Vanderhoven.

He married the former Gertrude Orton of Fairfax. She predeceased him on March 18, 1974.

He was employed as a field engineer with the state of New Jersey for many years.

Tom loved Vermont’s great outdoors fishing and hunting in this area over the years with his good friend and hunting and fishing partner Francis Cowie. He also had a great appreciation for art work and oil paintings.

He was friendly to all with a great sense of humor and will be greatly missed by all of those who had the good fortune to know and love him.

He is survived by a daughter, Barbara Jean Klingman; three grandchildren, Thomas Gates, Betty Gates and Barbie Gates; a great-granddaughter, Emily Gates, all of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; and several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by a brother, Leslie and three sisters, Margaret, Eleanor and Vivian.

Funeral services were held at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 20, with the Reverend Elizabeth Griffin officiating. Burial followed in the family lot in Sanderson Corners cemetery, Fairfax.

Memorial contributions in Tom’s memory memory may be made to Cambridge Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 431, Jeffersonville, VT 05464 or Lamoille Home Health and Hospice, 54 Farr Avenue, Morrisville, VT 05661. Arrangements were by the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main Street, Fairfax.

Mavis Mansfield Robinson

STOWE - Mavis Mansfield Robinson, age 65, of Stowe, left us peacefully on Monday, June 18, 2001, at the Morrisville Genesis ElderCare Center, after a brief battle with cancer. She was born in Stowe on June 18, 1936, the daughter of the late Stanley and Lura Mansfield.

Throughout the different stages of her life, Mavis always seemed to take care of others. Whether it was the times she was able to stay home and take care of not only her own children, but children of other families or tending to those she worked for during her working years of cleaning homes.

Mavis was a graduate of the Stowe High School Class of 1954. Among her many interests she enjoyed crossword puzzles, knitting, gardening and cheering on her favorite Winston Cup driver, Dale Jarret.

Mavis is survived by her brother, Wendall Mansfield and his wife Phyllis of Stowe, her three children, Robert Whitcomb and wife Paula of Middlebury, (Robert's children Laughton, Asa, and Libby, of Wilmington, and Paula's sons Dylan, Dennis Degree, of Middlebury) her son Robbie Robinson, of Winooski, and her daughter Martha Lambert (Martha's sons Bradley and Mark, of South Burlington).

She was predeceased by her husband Wendell Robinson in 1987 and by her long time companion Wayne Wells in December 2000, and by her three brothers Tracy, Elroy and Walter Mansfield. Mavis is also survived by Wayne's five children, Larry Wells and companion Anita, Vickie McLaughlin and her husband Kevin, Dianne Heath, Melvin Wells and wife Helen, Wanda Chamberland and husband Ray, and their families that consist of 15 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. Also included are daughters-in-law Maggie Libby, Karen Groseclose, Susan Gibbs and sons-in-law Steve Lambert, and George Spoerl.

Mavis was loved by all and will be missed greatly, but she will always be with us in our hearts and memories.

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, June 20, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Stafford Funeral Home in Stowe. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 21 at 2 p.m. at the Standard Church in Waterbury Center, with interment to follow at the West Branch cemetery in Stowe. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Morrisville Genesis ElderCare Center in Morrisville, VT 05661.

Arrangements are under the care of the Stafford Funeral Home in Stowe.

Ross Merton Harvey

MORRISVILLE - Ross Merton Harvey, 78, passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2001 at Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington, with his family by his side.

He was born in Wolcott on April 18, 1923, the son of the late William and E. Lillian (King) Harvey. They lived in Wolcott until the family purchased a farm in Hyde Park in 1935.

Ross attended schools in Wolcott and Hyde Park before serving his country in the U.S. Army in World War II, receiving an honorable discharge in the spring of 1946. He then started his career as an equipment operator and then becoming a carpenter, retiring from Curran and Lavoie Bridge Contractors of New Hampshire.

On January 15, 1943, he married Doris Rose Olney of Walden, where they resided and started their family. They then moved to Hyde Park where they spent the majority of their lives. Doris predeceased Ross on August 21, 1974.

In October 1978, he married Sylvia Lepper and they resided in Morrisville, where she predeceased him on April 4, 1999.

Ross was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. He had acquired numerous friends over the years who would stop and listen to a story or two whenever they would meet.

Ross had a fondness for horses, having been a farrier (horse shoer) for many years, and had passed his trade on to his oldest son, Melvin. He enjoyed horse pulling, hunting and fishing, and family get-togethers. Ross was very proud of putting his four sons through college, and they will remember him for his wisdom, patience and may sacrifices he made for them while growing up.

He is survived by his four sons, Melvin and his wife Susan, David, Kenneth and Debbie Slayton, Marvin and Patty Greenia, all of Hyde Park; a daughter-in-law, Martha Harvey, of Morrisville; one sister, Avis Houston and her husband, Hugh, of Craftsbury; a brother-in-law and friend, Arthur Olney and his wife Adrienne, of Walden; four sisters-in-law, Irene Wright and her husband, Arthur, of Southbridge, MA, Blanche Messier and her husband Ernest, of Greensboro Bend, Pauline LaCrox and her husband Joe, of Summerfield, FL, and Cecile Olney of St. Johnsbury; three grandsons William, Todd and Scott Harvey of Hyde Park; two granddaughters, Kim Harvey of Hyde Park and Karen Nowowieski and a great-grandson, Damian, of White Marsh, MD. He also leave four step grandchildren, Christopher, Mandy, Sarah and Duncan and their mother, Carol Lepper, of Maryland; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 15, 2001 in the Puffer United Methodist Church, Morrisville with interment following in the family lot in the Center cemetery in Hyde Park.
