Frances Delores Clark Daniels MacDermott passed away peacefully on Sept. 21, 2007, at Hospice House in Bend, Ore., with her daughter Joyce at her side.
She was born to Herbert L. and Ada Anna Dora (Wenk) Clark, June 1, 1913, at Creston, Neb. She was interested in 4-H work and was a member and leader for 20 years. She graduated from Albion High School in Albion, Neb., with certification to teach. For 17 years she taught elementary school in Nebraska, attending normal training classes at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
She married George Daniels of Petersburg, Neb., in 1937. They had two daughters. In 1959, the family moved from Nebraska to Winthrop, where Delores taught elementary school for another 15 years. Attending the University of Central Washington, she received a B.A. degree. She was a member of the American Association of University Women. She retired in 1974.
Her husband, George Daniels, of Winthrop passed away Oct. 27, 1997. In 2003, Delores married Waldo MacDermott of Bend, Ore. Waldo passed away Aug. 29, 2005.
Delores is survived by her daughters Donna Daniels of Ellensburg and Joyce Daniels of Winthrop; two grandsons, Ryan and John Ebenger of Edmonton, Alberta; two brothers Darwin Clark of Colorado and Bob Clark of Nebraska; and a sister, Ruth Clark, of Nebraska. Delores will be remembered as optimistic, inspirational and great fun to be with by her family, friends, and countless former students.

Louise Grim, 85, of Winthrop passed away Oct. 19, 2007, due to complications resulting from a fall she had suffered three days prior. Louise was born July 24, 1922, in Piqua, Ohio, the first child born to August F. Klemz and Opal Snyder Klemz.
She grew up during the Depression, with her childhood years spent in Ohio, Indiana, and Minnesota. She came to Washington in 1943, settling in western Washington, where she lived for 15 years. Louise moved to the Methow Valley in 1958, and worked as a grocery clerk for nine years. In 1966, she married Bob Grim of Carlton. A few years later they purchased Chase’s clothing store in Twisp, where you would find her smiling face and cheerful voice six days a week until her retirement in 1985. Her retirement years were spent pursuing her hobbies at their home in Carlton, and more recently, at their home in Winthrop.
Louise is survived by three children, Robert Grim and Margaret Grim of Winthrop, and Tamara Muldoon of Portland, Ore.; four grandchildren, Kara Gross, Brian Campbell, Robert Grim, and Stuart Grim; and four great-grandchildren, Kiona and Hunter Campbell, Jessica Reid, and Seth Gross. She is also survived by four sisters, Evelyn Painter of Seattle, Doris Paulson of Poulsbo, Ruby Battles of Spokane, and Helen Clements of Smithville, Tenn.; and three brothers, Doyle Klemz of Parker, Ariz., Ervin Klemz of Spokane, and Bob Klemz of Battleground, Wash. Her brother, Melvin Klemz of Seattle, passed away less than 24 hours after Louise. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and a sister, Ruth Jilcott.
Memorial services will be held Saturday (Oct. 27) at 1 p.m. at Precht’s Methow Valley Chapel in Twisp with interment following at Beaver Creek cemetery. If desired, donations in her name can be made to Aero Methow Rescue Service in Twisp.

Joseph Perry Brewster, Jr., 83, of Twisp passed away peacefully Oct. 19, 2007, at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee.
Perry was born on Nov. 24, 1923, in Anacortes, Wash., to Joseph and Mary Brewster. He and his family moved to the Methow Valley when he was seven. He had a great love for ranching and drove truck for many years so that he could carry out his dream of buying his ranch and raising cows up the Twisp River.
Besides running his ranch, he also rode the range for two larger ranchers for 26 years. He also worked at the mill at night. He used to say he had extra jobs to support his cows!
He and his wife of 51 years, Dorothy, raised three children, Teddi, Joe and Mike.
He was the proud grandpa of Stuart and Staci (Teddi’s kids), Lisa and J.P. V ("Moose") (Joe’s kids), and Andy (Mike’s son). He was also proud of his six great-grandsons. He also enjoyed being around those he called his extra kids – Doug and Michelle, and Gary and Marilyn. He loved to take us camping in the summer up into the high lakes. We loved it, too. He also loved to fish and ride with his best friend since the age of seven, Vernon. Perry also loved to play pool…(remember the "Brewster shot"?)
He was one of the last "old cowboys." All of his children respected and looked up to him. He will always be an icon in our hearts and forever missed.
Perry is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughter Teddi and her husband Kyle of Twisp; son Joe of South Dakota and his son Moose; son Mike and his wife Joyce and their son Andy of Ferndale; Teddi’s kids – son Stuart and Joanna and their three sons; daughter Staci and Ted and their three sons; and his sister Virginia Neufeld and children of Orofino, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Josie.
Memorial services will be held Saturday (Oct. 27) at 4 p.m. at the Precht’s Methow Valley Chapel in Twisp.

Donna Jeanne Daniels of Ellensburg died Nov. 24, 2007, after a struggle with cancer. She was born at Albion, Neb., on Oct. 11, 1946, to George Daniels and Frances Delores (Clark) Daniels.
Donna was a 4-H member while living in Nebraska. The family moved from Loretto, Neb., to Winthrop in 1959. She was an accomplished artist and musician. She was a member of Campfire Girls and Eastern Star. She enjoyed biking, skiing, hiking, weaving, sewing, cooking and gardening. She graduated from Winthrop High School in 1965, and attended Central Washington University.
One of Donna’s most memorable accomplishments was working and living on Washington Pass on avalanche control in conjunction with the University of Washington.
Donna was preceded in death by her parents, George Daniels and Frances Delores Clark Daniels McDermott. She is survived by her sister Joyce Daniels of Winthrop and her nephews Ryan and John Ebenger of Edmonton, Alberta.
Donna will be remembered for her gentle spirit and sweet smile.

Dr. Louis C. Vejraska, 86, passed away in Omak Dec. 19, 2007. He was born June 24, 1921, to Louis and Mary Vejraska in Odell, Neb.
Lou graduated in 1939 from Odell High School. He studied dentistry and graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1945. He married Elda M. Hamel on Sept. 11, 1943, in Beatrice, Neb. After Lou’s graduation, the couple set up practice in Pawnee City, Neb.
They had two sons, Steve Alan and Craig Louis. They moved to Omak in 1949, set up a dental practice, and six months later Lou was recalled into the Army to serve as the chief dental examining officer at the William Beaumont Army Hospital in El Paso, Texas.
Lou practiced dentistry in Winthrop for five years, and served as president of the North Central Washington Dental Association. He established the Sunny Okanogan Angus Ranch, and with partners established Transwestern Real Estate Development Group. He also established the Verjaska Subdivision in San Diego, Calif.
Lou is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elda; his son Craig and wife Mary Kay; grandsons Todd, Scott, Jason and Ryan; granddaughter Alison; and great-grandchildren Kelsey, Kacie, Kady and Jaxson, all of Omak; his sisters Doreen Maixner of Butte, Mont., and Mary Lou Meerian of Hanover, Kan., and many nieces and nephews.
Viewing is Wednesday (Dec. 26) from 4 to 8 p.m., and Rosary is Thursday (Dec. 27), both at Precht Harrison Nearents Chapel in Omak. Funeral mass is Friday (Dec. 28) at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Omak. Memorials have been established at the Omak Fire Department and the Elks Lodge in Omak.

Eileen Elizabeth Parten, 83, of Okanogan, passed away Dec. 18, 2007, at Harmony House in Brewster. She was born Oct. 29, 1924, in Farmer, Wash., to Roy and Ada Viola Painter. She grew up in the Methow Valley, attending Winthrop public school.
Eileen Married Charles B. Parten on July 3, 1946, not long after he returned from serving in the Army in WWII. Eileen enjoyed cooking, gardening and spending time with her family.
She is survived by one daughter, Susan Tuthill of Okanogan; and five sons, Terry (Cathy) Parten of East Wenatchee, Leroy (Chris) Parten, Randy (Kim) Parten and Bob (Brenda) Parten all of Okanogan, and Tom Parten of Brewster; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Eileen was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and one brother, Larry Painter.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday (Dec. 27) at 1 p.m. at Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel in Okanogan.

James A. "Al" Cheek, 79, of Omak, passed away Dec. 15, 2007, at the Valley Care Center in Okanogan. Al was born April 30, 1928, to Albert Nicholas and Evie Claire Cheek of Roanoke, Va.
At a young age, Al joined the U.S. Army and served as a halftrack driver during the Korea War. After being discharged from the military, Al moved to the Methow Valley, where he worked for the Forest Service fire control and engineers department. He retired from the Forest Service after 45 years and then drove truck for Mack Lloyd Logging Company in the Methow area off and on for a number of years before completely retiring.
Al was a lifetime member of the American Legion, as well as serving as its commander for a time at the Winthrop Post 120. He was also a member of the Eagles for 40 years and very much enjoyed watching and attending stock car races around the area.
Al is survived by his loving wife, Lola Cheek of Omak; their sons, Nick (Shauna) Cheek, Jim (Pat) Cheek, and Steve Cheek; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, twin brother, sisters Emma Cheek and Eva Paxton; and his granddaughter, Amy McCarter.
Still thinking about others even towards the end of his life, Al made one of his final wishes to be that nobody have to freeze outside in the cold in order to attend his funeral, so in accordance with this request, there will be a memorial service planned for the spring when the weather gets better.

Gwendolin (Gwen) Beach, resident of Twisp for 25 years, died Dec. 10, 2007, at the age of 86. She was born in 1921, in Jacksonville, Mo., the sixth of nine children to Perry and Gwendolin Haworth. She was affectionately called "Babe" by all of her family.
She became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses at the age of 18, after her future in-laws called at her family home as part of the volunteer Bible education work of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
After graduating from high school, Gwen received her teaching certificate and went on to teach at the Theocratic Kingdom School in Emporia, Kan.
She married David W. Beach on April 1, 1941, in Cottonwood Falls, Kan. They spent 66 years together and had two daughters, Linda and Sandy, and two granddaughters, Tara and Bree.
Their life together centered on the worship of Jehovah. They served as volunteer ministers in the states of Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Oregon, Colorado and Washington. Gwen loved telling others about her faith and hope in God’s promises.
Gwen loved the outdoors, and she and Dave had many adventures traveling, hiking and camping together. Some of her fondest memories were riding mules down into the Grand Canyon, family camping trips on the Chewack River and harvesting apples with the family in their orchard in Twisp.
She will be fondly remembered by many as a sweet, kind and gentle woman who had a zeal and zest for life. She loved her family and her God, Jehovah.
A memorial was held Dec. 15 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Twisp.

Malcolm McLane, 83, died peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at his home at Kendal, a retirement community in Hanover, N.H.
Born Oct. 3, 1924, in Manchester, McLane served on the Concord City Council for 20 years and as mayor of Concord from 1970 to 1976.
He joined the Concord law firm of Orr and Reno in 1952, and served as president of the firm from 1981 to 1984.
A 1942 graduate of St. Paul’s School, McLane served as an officer in the Air Force in World War II. He flew 73 missions before he was shot down in a dogfight over Luxembourg during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. McLane spent the remainder of the war in Stalagluft I, a prisoner of war camp run by the German air force. The Germans abandoned the camp, which was liberated by Soviet forces May 1, 1945. McLane returned to New Hampshire a decorated war hero and spent the summer of 1945 recuperating at his family’s home on Newfound Lake.
After the War, McLane graduated from Dartmouth with the Class of 1946. In 1948, he married Susan Neidlinger of Hanover and moved to Oxford, England, where he was a Rhodes scholar. McLane graduated from Harvard Law School in 1952.
He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, former N.H. Senator Susan McLane; his parents, John R. "Judge" McLane and Elisabeth "Ibus" McLane; and his brother John R. McLane, Jr., of Manchester.
He leaves three daughters, Robin McLane of Portsmouth and her daughter, Marion Read; Debbie Carter of Norwich, Vt., her husband, Peter Carter, and their daughters, Sasha, Ashley, Maile and Laurel Carter; and Ann McLane Kuster of Hopkinton, her husband, Brad Kuster, and their sons, Zach and Travis Kuster; two sons, Donald McLane of Twisp, Wash., his wife, Lois Garland, and their daughters, Karissa and Abi McLane, and son, Erik McLane; and Alan McLane of Jackson, his wife, Alice McLane, and their daughters, Laura Sorochak and Carrie McLane; his sisters, Lilla McLane-Bradley and Mary McLane; his brother, Charles McLane; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held later in the month in Concord.

Grace Bergenholtz passed away May 2, 2008, with her husband by her side.
She was born to Okanogan County pioneers James and Mary (Slagle) Knowlton in Brewster on Oct. 25, 1921, and was the only one of her siblings delivered by Brewster doctor "Doc McKinley." Her family operated a dairy farm in Brewster and she graduated from Brewster High School.
Grace met her future husband, Irvin (Buster) Bergenholtz, while she worked as an usher at the movie theater in Brewster. They were married at her parents’ home on July 14, 1941. This was also her parents’ wedding anniversary.
They lived in numerous homes throughout Okanogan Country, following work for Buster until 1947, when they purchased an apple orchard in the Methow Valley. They lived 55 years in the Methow raising apples and girls.
Grace helped work in the orchard raising, harvesting and sorting the apples.
Following in her mother’s footsteps, Grace was an active member of the Rebekah Lodge.
Two of Grace’s great loves were reading and crossword puzzles. She was always reading at least one, if not two books at a time. All of her daughters are avid readers because of her example.
Crocheting was her second love. When not reading, she had a crochet hook and yarn in her hands. The family has many Afghans made by Grace.
We will always remember Grace as a strong, hardworking wife, mother, grand-mother and great-grandmother, who loved hummingbirds and yellow finches. To the world, you may be one person, but to one person you are the world.
Grace is survived by her husband of 66 years, Irvin "Buster" Bergenholtz, and her four daughters, Mary Murray, husband James from Okanogan; Linda Galbraith, husband Dan from Newport; Audrea Miller, husband Ken from Beaverton, Ore.; and Dorothy Caille, husband Grover from Mansfield. She is also survived by one brother, John Knowlton and his wife Clara from Brewster, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one grandson, her parents, one brother and two sisters.
Services will be held at Barnes Chapel on Wednesday (May 7) at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Beaver Creek cemetery.

Audra Bryant Beckner

Audra Bryant Beckner passed away Monday, May 14, 2001, at 96 years old. Ms Beckner was born March 29, 1905, in Summerset, Kentucky. She attended a one-room Elementary school at Vernon, Colorado and graduated from Yuma Co. High, class of 1924, Wray County.
Audra worked for awhile at Remington Arms during the war then returned to school and graduated from Colorado State College, Greeley, Colorado with a Bachelor of Arts degree on December 11, 1957. Her major was Music Ed with a minor in Elementary Education. Audra attended Greeley College for a number of summers during vacation time to stay on top of her teaching career.
She married Orvel O. Beckner June 26, 1926, in Wray, Colorado. They were married 60 years before Beck’s passing. Audra and Beck owned and ran Beckner’s Café in Wray, Colorado. Orvel, a World War I veteran, was transferred to Richland in 1944 and worked for General Electric Co until retiring. He and Audra brought their two children with them.
In 1948, the Beckner’s purchased 15 acres in Finley. Audra went to work teaching school at Hover in Finley. She then taught in the Riverview Elementary School, mostly 6th grade, until she retired after 20 years.
The Beckners had race horses for many years, owned registered Angus cattle which they showed at the fairs for over 26 years, and owned Beckner’s Blue Columbia Angus Ranch.
Audra was a member of the Finley Methodist Church and then attended the Finley Baptist Church which took over.
Survivors include daughter, Kathlynn “K-Lynn” Bogart and husband, Rod, of Pasco; son, John L. Beckner of Whitesboro, TX; 3 grandchildren: Audeena Faubert of Richland, Leasa Beckner of Spokane and Amy Beckner; one great granddaughter; numerous nieces and nephews; special, special loved ones and special friends to us, Francesca Bush, Rhonda Tarbox and Maria Mendoza of Multi Care Home Health whose help and love and kindness was unsurpassed in order for our family to cope with the difficulties during this last year; Audra’s Angels and K-Lynn’s extended family. The family also wishes to thank Dorn and Anita Hamblin for their long time friendship, guidance and support over the years. We are richly blessed.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Orvel O. “Beck” Beckner; mother and father, Lillian O. and John M. Botkin; sister, Kathlynn Elliott; and brother, John M. Botkin, Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 18, 2001, at Einan's Funeral Home. Audra will be laid to rest at the Hillside cemetery in Fort Lupton, Colorado.
