FRANCIS MAYER
Francis X. Mayer 69, of Prairie du Chien died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, at the
Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. He was born Aug. 12, 1934, in McGregor,
son of Anton and Pearl (DuCharme) Mayer. He served in the U.S. Air Force and
later worked as a contract administrator for the Department of Defense until
his retirement. He enjoyed golf and was an avid outdoorsman. He is survived
by four brothers; Bernard (Rosanna) and Maurice (Betty) both of Prairie du Chien,
John of Davenport, Iowa and Rev. Lawrence A. Mayer O. Praem of Chicago, Ill.,
two sisters; Mildred (Floyd) Sanders of Rapid City, S.D. and Judith (Thomas) Krug of Racine.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister in law Mary Mayer. A
Memorial Mass of Resurrection will be Thursday, Nov. 6, at 11:30 a.m. at
St. Gabriel's Catholic Church with interment of the cremains in the Calvary cemetery,
both in Prairie du Chien. Military Rites will be accorded by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard.
Friends may call at the church on Thursday, Nov. 6, from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services.
The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien assisted the family.

CARL GAULKE
Carl J. Gaulke, 90, of Prairie du Chien died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at the
Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. He was born
Oct. 5, 1913, in Prairie du Chien, son of William and Susan (Meyer) Gaulke.
He married Thelma Fawcett on July 5, 1960, in Beloit. He worked and retired
from Beloit Corporation after 29 years of service. After retirement he and
his wife worked at M&I; Bank of Beloit until they relocated to Prairie du Chien.
He is survived by a son Donald Gaulke of Prairie du Chien; 2 stepsons;
Larry (Nancy) Elmer of Prairie du Chien and Glenn (JoAnn) Elmer of Fond du Lac;
11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents,
his wife Thelma, a daughter and two brothers. Funeral Services will be Thursday,
Oct. 30, at 11:30 a.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Jerry Robertson
officiating, with burial in the Evergreen cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien.
Friends may call on Thursday, Oct. 30, at the funeral home from 10:30 a.m.
until the time of services.

BERTINA MIKKELSON
Bertina G. Mikkelson, 92, of rural Soldiers Grove, passed away Thursday,
Oct. 23, 2003, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. She
was born May 11, 1911 in Crawford County, daughter of Jacob and
Selma (Gald) Tisthammer. She married Arnold Weeks in 1930, he passed
away in 1935. Bertina married Clifford Mikkelson in 1940. They were
blessed with 63 years of marriage residing on the Mikkelson family
farm until the time of her death. Surviving are her husband, Clifford
and four children, Roger (Carole) Weeks, La Crosse,
Beverly (Ramon) Cram, Tomah, Frank (Mary) Weeks, Prairie du Chien
and Annette (Tony) Guldenaar, Sparta; she is also survived by 12 grandchildren,
19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents,
one sister, Marie, one brother, Joseph, one grandson, Arnold Weeks,
and two granddaughters, Nancy Jean and Lynn Marie Weeks. Bertina was
a faithful member of Mt. Sterling Lutheran Church, W.E.L.C.A. and the
Martha Circle. She had a strong faith in God and an abiding love for
her husband, Clifford and her family. She truly felt that her Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ was her friend. Services were Monday at the
Mt. Sterling Lutheran Church, Pastor Gary Wees officiating with
burial in the church cemetery. The Dommersnaes Bertram Family Funeral Home,
Gays Mills assisted the family. Memorials are requested to Mt. Sterling Lutheran Church.

LYLE POSTEN
Lyle R. Posten, 65, Bloomington, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at
Meriter Hospital in Madison. Lyle was born Dec. 11, 1937 in
Patch Grove, son of Ora and Hazel (Gordon) Posten. He attended
country grade schools and graduated from Patch Grove High School.
On July 2, 1966, he married Mildred "MikkiÓ Klinkenberg in
Prairie du Chien. He was a past member of the National Guard.
He worked with his father farming, while also working at
International Harvestore Machine Sales in Prairie du Chien
for 14 1/2 years. While at International Harvestore, he delivered
machinery and worked as a mechanic and painter. He then worked for
Moore transportation in Prairie du Chien for 30 years, working as a
long haul trucker. Surviving are his wife, Mikki Posten, Bloomington;
three children, Monica (Ken) Hodgson, Argyle; Pamela (Tom) Budworth,
Prairie du Chien; and Robert (Karla) Posten, Prairie du Chien; five grandchildren;
five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Harold (Emma Jean) Posten,
Prairie du Chien. He was preceded in death by his parents. Services will be
Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Martin Page Funeral Home in Bloomington,
Rev. Susan Brown officiating with burial in Union Nagle cemetery,
Patch Grove township. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at
the Martin Page Funeral Home in Bloomington and one hour prior to
the service Wednesday. A Lyle R. Posten memorial fund has been established.

HELEN HOLTAN
Helen McCloskey Holtan, 100, of Prairie du Chien died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003,
at the Prairie Health Care Center. She was born Nov. 7, 1902. in Fennimore,
daughter of Peter and Lena (Kreul) Gunderson. She attended the University of
Wisconsin at Madison and taught music in the Public Schools in Prairie du Chien
for many years. She married Clement McCloskey in 1923. He preceded her in
death in 1959. She later married Pastor Walter Holtan in 1978. He preceded
her in death in 1989. Helen was an active member of St. Peter Church in
Prairie du Chien and was a member of the Retired Teacher's Assn. and the
20th Century Club. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and playing bridge.
She is survived by a son Don McCloskey of Madison; a daughter
Janet (Charles) Thulin of Cedar Rapids, IA, five grandchildren and
11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents,
a daughter-in-law Irene McCloskey and a sister Hilda Gunderson. Funeral
services will be Friday, at 11a.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church,
Rev. Paul Graham officiating, with burial in the Evergreen cemetery,
both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call on Thursday, from 5 to 8 p.m.
at the Garrity Funeral Home and at the church on Friday, from 10 a.m.
until the time of services. Memorials may be made to St. Peter
Evangelical Lutheran Church, 201 S. Michigan, Prairie du Chien, WI, 53821.

DR. HAROLD HAAS
Dr. Harold Haas, DDS, 79, Calmar, Iowa died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003 at his
daughter's home in Fort Atkinson, Iowa following a short illness.

FRANCIS STLUKA
Francis "Frank" Stluka, 73, of Streamwood, Ill., died Sunday, October 12, 2003,
at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates after a courageous
battle with cancer. He was born June 15, 1930. in Prairie du Chien.
Frank served in the Air Force in the Korean Conflict. He was employed
at Howell Tractor in Elk Grove, Ill. as a mechanic for 35 years.
He was the husband of Mary (Kobelic) Stluka; father of Susan Hoffman;
grandfather of Christopher; and brother of Evelyn Osthoff of Madison;
Robert (Lisette) of Auburn, Wash; Dolores (Raymond) Bauerle of
Streamwood, Ill. Frank was preceded in death by his parents,
Frank and Mary (Check) Stluka; and by his brother, Edward.
Frank and his brothers, along with other childhood friends,
were instrumental in the erecting the "PdC" letters on the hillside.

LONETA BOHLAND
Loneta May Bohland, 91, of Prairie du Chien and formerly of Retreat,
rural DeSoto died on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 16, 2003,
at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. She was born May 30, 1912
at St. Charles, Minn. to William and Laura (Barker) Long.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. On
April 28, 1934 she married Otto Bohland in La Crosse.
They lived in the rural DeSoto and Retreat area until
1979 when they moved to Prairie du Chien. She worked at
various jobs after her children were grown. She loved
to play cards, knit, crochet, sew, cook and bake goodies
for her family and friends. She loved doing "stuff"
with the great grandchildren. Mr. Bohland died on January 25, 1994
and she moved to Rivercrest Apartments and now was living at
Steiner Terrace. Loneta is survived by her daughter,
Rita (Gene) Zink of Milton; two sons, Lyle (Ellie) Bohland of Janesville
and Larry (Phyllis) Bohland of Prairie du Chien; three granddaughters,
Joleen (Dean) Kaehler, Lori Bohland, and Trisha Zink,
seven grandsons, Kevin (fiancee, Jenny) Bohland, Bill (Michele) Bohland,
Scott Bohland, Gary (Tabitha) Bohland, Gerald (Lisa) Bohland,
Ricky Bohland and Ted Zink; six great-granddaughters, Michelle Carney,
Jennifer and Sydney Bohland, Rachel and Miranda Clift, and Megan Bohland,
seven great-grandsons, Jordan Kaehler, Danny and Jeremiah Clift,
Taylor and Torie Richardson and Gage and Drake Bohland; two sisters-in-law,
Ethel (Morris) Rook and Kathryn Elliott, both of DeSoto, other relatives
and many friends. She was also preceded in death by a brother,
Bernard 'Bernie' Long and a sister, Evelyn Bohland. Services
were held Sunday at the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua, Pastor
Douglas L. Mathison officiating with burial in the Walnut Mound
cemetery at Retreat. Serving as pallbearers were Kevin Bohland,
Ted Zink, Bill Bohland, Gary Bohland, Scott Bohland, Gerald Bohland,
and Ricky Bohland. A visitation was held Saturday afternoon at the funeral home.
