CLARENCE D. RUNNER
KEYSER, W.Va. - Clarence D. Runner, 99, formerly of 88 S. Water St., Keyser, died Friday, July 30, 1999, at Moran Manor Nursing Home, Westernport, Md.
Born March 25, 1900, in Preston County, he was a son of the late Charles and Sarah (Bowman) Runner. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Mabel (Harris) Runner, on Nov. 30, 1981, and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Runner was a retired engineer with the B&O; Railroad. He retired in 1965 with 43 years of service. He was a member of the Keyser Church of the Brethren. He also was the last surviving member of the local union of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
Surviving are one son, Ronald M. Runner, Keyser; two step-daughters, Justina Morris, Falling Waters, Rosena Mosser, Gauley Bridge; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several step-great-grandchildren.
Private graveside services will be conducted at Potomac Memorial Gardens on Monday with Pastor Joyce Petry officiating. Interment will follow.
The Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, is in charge of arrangements.
ZELLA H. VETTER
MOOREFIELD, W.Va. - Zella Dare (Halterman) Vetter, 77, of South Fork Road, Moorefield, passed away early Thursday morning, Oct. 21, 1999, at the Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, W.Va.
Born Nov. 6, 1921, in Moorefield, she was the daughter of the late L. Dow Halterman and Mary L. (Henry) Halterman. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Brady S. "June" Vetter, Jr., in January of this year, and one infant sister.
Mrs. Vetter had been employed by American Woodmark which was then Raygold/Boise Cascade the Acme 10 cent Store, she was a member of the Moorefield Presbyterian Church where she had been a Sunday School Teacher, Choir member, Chairman of the Kitchen Committee, Bible Teacher, Deacon and Chairman of the Day Circle, she was a member of the South Branch Bridge Club and served 40 years as observer for the National Weather Service.
She is survived by one daughter, Tamara G. Vetter, of Gainesville, Va.; two sons, Brady S. Vetter, III, and wife, Nancy, and William Moray Vetter and wife, Susan, both of Moorefield; two sisters, Orpha H. Hutson, of Petersburg, W.Va., and Lola H. Vance, of Moorefield; and three grandchildren.
Friends may call any time after 4 p.m. Friday at the Elmore-Chambers Funeral Home, Moorefield, the family will receive friends there from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Moorefield Presbyterian Church, with Bruce A. Macbeth, officiating.
Burial will follow at the Olivet cemetery, in Moorefield.

JOHN E. SHIELDS
FAIRMONT, W.Va. - John Edward Shields, 75, of Bellview, Fairmont, W.Va., died Saturday, May 8, 1999, at the Fairmont General Hospital.
He was born Aug. 2, 1923, in Grafton, W.Va. He was the son of the late Thomas R. and Agnes C. (Shoulte) Shields. He was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Shields.
He was a retired machinist with the CSX Railroad with 45 years of service. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Council #942 and Marian Assembly #2114. He also was a member of the American Legion Post #12, Grafton, and the Davis White V.F.W. Post #7048 in Fairmont. He was a licensed electrician in West Virginia and he was Commander of the Knights of Columbus Color Guard. He was also a member of the Marion County Police Reserves. A member of the I.A.M. & A.W. Railroad Union, a member of the U.S. Navy Reserves, and a Veteran of the U.S. Navy in World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Geraldine 'Jerry' (Stevens) Shields; his son, Stephen Shields and his wife, Patricia, Jackson, Mich.; a grandson, Jonathan and his wife, Tonya; and his great-grandchild, Mikayla Shields, Richmond, Va.; one brother, Raymond M. Shields, Cumberland, Md.; two nephews, Edward T. Shields and David M. Shields; one niece, Judith Manges.
Friends may call at the Domico Funeral Home, Fairmont, on Tuesday, May 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. there will be a Knights of Columbus Service at 8 p.m. There will be a Christian Wake Service.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 19, at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fairmont with the Rev. Casey Mahone as celebrant.
Burial will follow at the Mount Carmel cemetery where the Marion County Veterans Council will hold military services.

MURRAY C. WINTERS JR.
KEYSER, W.Va. - Murray C. Winters Jr., 84, a resident of the Hampshire Health Care Center, Romney, formerly of 1555 Terri St., Keyser, died at the center on Thursday, April 1, 1999.
Born April 21, 1914, in Keyser, he was the son of the late Murray C. Winters Sr. and Annie M. (Martin) Winters. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Clara M. (Trenton) Murray, on Feb. 9, 1994.
Mr. Murray was a retired lab technician from the West Virginia Department of Highways, and former owner of Winters Hardware, Keyser. He was a member of the Keyser Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are two sisters-in-law, Betty R. Stickley, Reeses Mill, and Virginia L. Delinger, Keyser. He also is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be conducted at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser, on Monday, April 5, 1999, at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Stephen P. Fritz officiating.
Private inurnment will be in the Queens Point cemetery, Keyser.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday one hour prior to the services.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Keyser Presbyterian Church.
BETTY ELIZABETH RAY
ELK GARDEN, W.Va. - Betty Elizabeth Ray, age 71, formerly of Elk Garden, passed away Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at the residence of her daughter in Oakland, Md.
Born March 2, 1927, in Bayard, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late John and Jessie (Grimes) Rodeheaver. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Ray; and a son, Joseph Ray.
She is survived by one daughter, Kathy Reese; two brothers, Ray Rodeheaver, Thomas, and Pete Rodeheaver, Mount Storm; and three grandchildren.
Friends will be received on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller, Md.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Donald E. Marple officiating.
LOIS R. RAY
PIEDMONT, W.Va. - Lois Ruth Ray, 56, of 51 Jones St., Piedmont, died Tuesday, July 13, 1999, at her home.
Born Aug. 8, 1943, in Fort Ashby, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Phares and Ida Kesner Phares. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, John, Benjamin and Ernest Phares.
She is survived by her husband, Gilbert W. Ray, of Piedmont; one daughter, Lisa Diane Athey and husband, David, Winchester, Va.; two sisters, Dorothy VanPelt and husband, Ted, Rawlings, Md., and Goldie McGreevy, Martinsburg; and three grandchildren.
She was a homemaker. She was Protestant by faith and was a member of the Bonnieview Apostolic Church, Keyser.
Friends may be received at the Fredlock Funeral Home, Piedmont, on Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. James Williamson officiating.

CHRISTINE M. WILLIAMS
NEW CREEK, W.Va. - Christine M. Williams, 50, loving wife, mother and grandmother, of HC 72, Box 124-A, New Creek, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at the Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.
Born Jan. 3, 1949, in Keyser, she was the daughter of Lula (Rounds) Kelly of Cresaptown, Md., and the late John E. Kelly. She also was preceded in death by one brother, John E. Kelly Jr.
Mrs. Williams was employed as a chiropractic assistant with her husband since 1973 in the operation of the Williams Chiropractic Clinic in Moorefield. She was a very active member of the Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Assembly, Keyser, and she devoted her entire life to serving the Lord and sharing the grace of God with others. She was a member of the Ladies Moving Forward Ministry of Emmanuel Church. She enjoyed very much camping and traveling to the beach with her family.
Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, Dr. Earl N. Williams, pastor of the Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Assembly, Newton Street, Keyser; one son, Daniel E. Williams and wife Leslie, Burlington; one daughter, Marie A. Liller and husband Todd, Burlington, one sister, Kathy Watson, Stafford, Va.; two grandsons, Jeremiah T. Liller and Brandon S. Liller; father-in-law, R. Neil Williams, Westernport, Md.; and mother-in-law, May Williams, Swanton, Md.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Assembly, Keyser, on Wednesday at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Wesley Potter, District Superintendent of the Mid-Atlantic Conference of the Pentecostal Holiness Churches officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to services.
