JOHN H. STERNER
KEYSER. W.Va. - John H. Sterner, 84, of 535 Carskadon Lane, Keyser, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, at the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
Born July 6, 1914, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late William W. and G. Edith (Myers) Sterner. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Alta Sterner, in 1998.

Mr. Sterner retired from the United States Army on Sept. 1, 1964, with the rank of warrant officer. He later worked in the United States Civil Service. He served in the African, European and Korean wars. He landed on D-Day in the Italian, Anzio and Southern France missions, and was awarded the Bronze Star and six battle stars.

Mr. Sterner was a 1931 graduate of the Pennsylvania Avenue High School, and graduated from four different finance and accounting courses at Fort Benjamin, Harrison, Ind.

He was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church, Keyser; and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Retired Officers Association, and the Retired Army Finance Officers.

Surviving are two sisters, Mildred A. McMillan and Eleanor S. Proudfoot, both of Cumberland; and several in-laws whom he considered brothers and sisters.

Friends will be received at the Maryland Veterans cemetery Chapel at Rocky Gap on Monday, Jan. 4, from 12:30 to 1 p.m.

Services will follow at the Chapel at 1 p.m. with the Rev. E. Jay West officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Calvary United methodist Church, Keyser.

The Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, Md., is in charge of arrangements.

SWISHER V. SMITH SR.
KEYSER, W.Va. - Swisher V. Smith Sr., 91, of 500 Carskadon Lane, formerly of 53 Virginia St., Keyser, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, at the Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.
Born July 31, 1907, at New Creek, W.Va., he was a son of the late Patrick and Sarah (Aronhalt) Smith. Twice married , he was preceded in death by both wives, Evelyn (Linebaugh) Smith and Mary Catherine (Paugh) Smith. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Smith was a retired coal miner and was a member of the former Oakmont Assembly of God Church.

Surviving are one son, Swisher V. Smith Jr. and wife Brenda, Keyser; two daughters, Debbie L. Smith, Keyser, and Anna M. McRobie and husband Dale, Elk Garden; two granddaughters, Jordan Smith and McKenzie Smith; and three grandsons, Swisher V. Smith III, Dakota Smith and Stephen Miller.

Friends may call at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Nethken Hill United Methodist Church, Elk Garden, on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Leslie Hipp officiating.

The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the services.

Interment will be in the Kalbaugh cemetery, Elk Garden.

DOROTHY O. SPEELMAN
ROMNEY, W.Va. - Dorothy Olive Speelman, 97, of Romney, died Thursday, March 18, 1999, at the Long Term Care Unit at Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney.
She was born Aug. 24, 1901, in Romney, a daughter of the late James P. and Melissa K. (Sanders) Bailey. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bernard C. Speelman, on Sept. 15, 1984; two brothers; two sisters; three daughters, Vivian E. Tutwiler, C. Tawaka Hoover and Dorothy B. Massie; and one grandchild.

She was a member of Romney First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

She is survived by two daughters, June Gayman, Norfolk, Va., and Coralena "Deanie" Smith and husband, Clarence Jr., Romney; one son-in-law, James Massie, Bunker Hill; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home on Saturday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be conducted at the First United Methodist Church, Romney, on Sunday, March 21, at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Calvin McCutcheon officiating.

Interment will be in the Indian Mound cemetery, Romney.

Memorials may be made to the Romney First United Methodist Church.

ROBERT K. REDMAN
CARPENDALE, W.Va. - Robert Keith Redman, 65, of R.F.D. 1, Box 294, Carpendale, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born March 24, 1933, in Petersburg, he was the son of the late John Ernest Redman and the late Viola Melinda (George) Redman.

Mr. Redman was a former employee of Bethlehem Steel Company, Baltimore, as a pipefitter. He was a member of the Baptist Church, American Legion Post #13, and he was a life member of V.F.W. Post #6450, Ridgeley. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Surviving are is former wife, Kay (Vandergrift) Redman Grogg; three sons, Darren Redman and wife, Rhonda, Ridgeley, Keith Redman, Wilmington, Del., and Curtis Redman, Hagerstown, Md.; a daughter, Julie Whorton, Baltimore, Md.; three brothers, Richard C. Redman, Jack Redman and Donald Redman, all of Cumberland, Md.; six sisters, Frances Jones, Texas, Helen Edwards, Baltimore, Carol Hall, Oldtown, Md., Shirley Carnes, Ridgeley, Anna M. Kincaid, Cumberland, and Alma Nowbiski, Chicago, Ill.; and four grandchildren, Dakota, Venessa, William and Aaron.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., with the Rev. Ken L. Korns officiating.

Interment will be in Maryland Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.

DAVID V. REEL
PETERSBURG, W.Va. - David V. "Jake" Reel, 76, of Petersburg, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

Born May 27, 1923, in Petersburg, he was the son of the late Bernard and Delphia Mae (Moyers) Crites. He was also preceded in death by one granddaughter, Candice R. Reel; half sister, Zola Sites; and two brothers, Elwood Reel, and Brooks Reel.

Mr. Reel retired from Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. in Petersburg, from over 40 years of service. After retirement he worked for Kesner's Exxon, Barr's Citco and at time of his death he was working for Markwood Chevron in Petersburg.

He was a member of CCC Camp (Civil Conservation Corp.). He was a veteran of World War II, served in the U.S. Air Force and life member of Potomac Highlands VFW Post 6454. He was a member of Faith Assembly of God Church, in Petersburg.

Surviving are his wife, Goldie F. (Keplinger) Reel; two daughters, Delphia Mae Reel, and Judy A. Reel, both of Petersburg; nine sons, Eddie R. Reel, Petersburg, Randy B. Reel, of New Windsor, Gary "Pop" Reel, of Petersburg, James A. Reel, of Maysville, W.Va., David E. Reel, of Maysville, Vernon A. Reel, Cabins, W.Va., Roger L. Reel, of Petersburg, Larry J. Keplinger, of Columbus, Ga., and Paul W. Keplinger, of Tearcoat Road, Arthur, W.Va.; 17 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at the Schaeffer Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at the Faith Assembly of God Church, Monday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Charles Lomasney and the Rev. Paul Donaldson, officiating.

Burial will be at South Branch Memorial Gardens, Petersburg.

Military graveside service will be conducted by the Veteran Organizations of Grant County.

ELMER E. WAGONER
SPRINGFIELD, W.Va. - Elmer E. Wagoner, 89, of Springfield, formerly of Seymour Street, Cumberland, Md., died Monday, April 12, 1999, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Sept. 13, 1909, in Springfield, he was the son of the late Walter S. and Della A. (Wagoner) Wagoner. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Mabel S. Wagoner; second wife, Viola A. Wagoner; two brothers, Raymond Wagoner and Russell Wagoner; and one sister, Blanche Adams.

Mr. Wagoner was a retired employee of the Chessie System. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and was a member of the Cumberland Church of Christ.

Surviving are one daughter, Elnora Lynch and husband, Ronald, Springfield; one stepdaughter, Wanda Hott, Cumberland; one brother, Chester B. Wagoner, Springfield; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from noon to 1 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 1 p.m. with Jeff Burkey and Ed Floyd officiating.

Interment will be in Fort Ashby cemetery, Fort Ashby.

Pallbearers will be Dan Lynch, Rick Lynch, John Horn Jr., George Seeders, Gary Wagoner and Mike Wagoner.
