ROBERT D. THOMAS
MAUMELLE, Ark. - Robert D. "Bobby" Thomas, 58 of Maumelle, formerly of Westminster and Frostburg, Md., died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at his home following a brief illness.
Born December 24, 1940, he was the son of the late Helen E. Thomas Snyder and the late Fred Thomas. He was the husband of Margarita Thomas, his wife of 38 years.
Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter Annie Cain and husband Fred, Houston, Texas; one son Andy Thomas, at home; seven brothers, Fred "Sonny" Thomas, Tustin, Calif., Bart Thomas, Pasadena, Md., William "Bill" Thomas Sr., Westminster, Md., Rodney Thomas, Moorefield, W.Va., John Snyder, Lexington Park, Md., Joe Snyder, Lonaconing, Md., and Ronny Thomas, Frostburg, Md.; and six sisters, Sue Whetstone, Midlothian, Md., Sheila Whetstone, Wilma Cutter, Barb Snyder, Kitty Thomas and Gail Thomas, all of Frostburg, Md.
Funeral services were held Sept. 14, 1999, at Griffin Leggett/Rest Hills Funeral Home, North Little Rock.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
DURANE D. SMITH
PAW PAW, W.Va. - Durane Daffin Smith, 67, of Rt. 1, Box 148, Paw Paw, W.Va., 25434, died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, at his residence.
Born Sept. 13, 1932, in Slanesville, W.Va., he was the son the late Marshall Smith and Velma Alkire Smith.
Mr. Smith was a construction worker. He also was an Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Fannie Marie Flanagan; four sons, Larry D. Smith and fiancee Lori, James D. Smith, both of Paw Paw, Denny L. Smith and wife Angie, Points, W.Va., Danny L. Smith and wife Diana, Oldtown; three brothers, Voyne Smith, Paw Paw, Wallace Smith, and Jerry Smith, both of Slanesville, W.Va.; two sisters, Mavis Potter, Romney, W.Va., Eva Collis, Slanesville, W.Va.; and four grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Trevor, Jenae, and Jeffrey.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, W.Va.
Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Wayne Stotler, officiating.
WESLEY M. TAYLOR
ROMNEY, W.Va. - Wesley Mills "Wess" Taylor, 76, of Romney, died Oct. 3, 1999, at his residence.
Born on April 18, 1923, in Romney, he was the son of the late William M. and Autumn M. (Liller) Taylor. He was also preceded in death by one son, James Michael Taylor; six brothers; and five sisters.
Mr. Taylor retired after 39 1/2 years with the Potomac Edison Company serving the Romney, Hagerstown, and Keyser areas. After retiring he worked with the Fruit Growers Co-op of Hampshire County and Romney Florist.
He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, member of the Potomac Edison Quarter of a Century Club, former member of the Romney Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Taylor served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army in the European Theater of War. He was at the invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Wappocoma Post 1101. A former member of the American Legion Hampshire Post 91 and the Hampshire County Veterans Honor Guard and Firing Squad until the time of his illness. He was also an active supporter of High School and College Athletics.
Survivors include, his wife, Beatrice Haines Taylor, Romney; one son, William M. Taylor and wife, Ulrike E., Romney; one daughter, Dorothy Ann Dayton and husband, Fred, Walkersville; one brother, Eugene Taylor, Shanks, W.Va.; one sister, Sally Turner, Romney; five grandchildren, Wesley Matthew Klaus Taylor, and Ethan Edison Taylor, both of Romney, Frederick E. Dayton, III, and Jennifer Beatrice Dayton, both of Walkersville, and Michael Wesley Dayton, Culpeper, Va.; and one great-grandchild, Nicholas Robert Dayton, Culpeper, Va.
Friends will be received at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Romney, on Thursday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m. The body will be taken to the church to lie in state for one hour before the service, with the Rev. Kenneth Smith and the Pastor David Simmons, officiating.
Memorials may take the form of donations to Hampshire County Little League, the Hospice of the Eastern Panhandle, or the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney.
GEORGE W. SMITH
BURLINGTON, W.Va. - George W. Smith, 78, of Rt. 1, Box 247, Burlington, W.Va., died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at the Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney, W.Va.
Born on Dec. 15, 1920, in Harrison County, W.Va., he was a son of the late George W. Smith, Sr. and the Anna (Reed) Smith. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Goldie Garlendine (Canan) Smtih on Aug. 11, 1993; five brothers, Sylvanus, Oscar, Jarrett, John and Guy Smith; and one sister, Etta Canan.
Mr. Smith was retired from the Penn Ventilator Company. He was a member of the Lone Star United Methodist Church, Burlington, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received in the Battle of the Bulge.
Surviving are one son, Larry George Smith, Burlington, W.Va.; one daughter, Garlendine Rozetta Charlton and husband Duke, Burlington, W.Va.; three sisters, Esta Nabors, New Creek, W.Va., Martha Hott, Romney, W.Va., Edna Mays, Burlington, W.Va.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, W.Va., on Sunday and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Northeast Lighthouse Ministries, Knobley Road, Ridgeville, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Tom Anderson officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to services.
HELEN SMITH
RIDGELEY W.Va. - Helen Smith, 78, of 80 Knobley St., Ridgeley, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at Cumberland Memorial Hospital.
Born May 22, 1921, in Grantsville, Md., she was the daughter of the late Charles Duckworth and the late Cora (Beechy) Duckworth. She also was preceded in death by her husband Earl Clayton Smith, Jan. 9, 1971; one sister, Grace Grahn; and three brothers, Harold, Roy and Everett Duckworth. Mrs. Smith was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Smith attended Calvary United Methodist Church in Ridgeley for approximately 40 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Women's Society of the church.
Surviving are one daughter, Shirley E. Grogg and husband Jeff, Cumberland; one son, Gary Smith and wife Jenna, Martins Ferry, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Sarah and Andrew Grogg, Cumberland, and Marissa Smith, Martins Ferry, Ohio.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland on Thursday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. at Calvery United Methodist Church, Ridgeley, with the Rev. Edward R. Dickel officiating. The body will be taken to the church at noon on Friday.
JOSEPHINE R. SMITH
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - Josephine Ruth Smith, 89, formally of 416 Race St., Cumberland, Md., died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at her home in Bridgeport.
Born June 17, 1909, in Flintstone, Md., she was the daughter of the late Nina Mae (Smith) Smith. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are two cousins, Murl E. Twigg, and Robert E. Twigg and wife Dottie, all of Bridgeport.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. John Miller officiating.
Interment will be in the Prosperity Christian cemetery near Chaneysville, Pa.
