HELEN L. CANAN
FORT ASHBY, W.Va. - Helen L. Canan, 78, of Fort Ashby, died Monday, June 22, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
She was born Dec. 20, 1919, in Springfield, a daughter of the late Alex R. Lee Sr., and Nannie Susan (Hartman) Lee. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Thomas Canan, on June 9, 1987; one brother, Alex R. Lee Jr.; and one sister, Lorena Eckenrode.
Mrs. Canan was a cook for the Hampshire County School system. She operated the Woodland Inn in Short Gap for 10 years, and she cooked for the Wind Chime Restaurant in Fort Ashby.
She also was an avid Bingo player.
Surviving are one son, Donald Dyche, and wife, Delores, Short Gap; three daughters, Melinda S. Cooper, Fort Ashby, Beverly R. Henry, and husband, John, Fort Ashby, Sandra Floyd, and husband, Robert, Cape Coral, Fla.; one sister, Willa Allen, Fort Ashby; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, on Wednesday, June 24, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday, June 25, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Norman Landis officiating.
CHARLES VOHN ALT
KEYSER, W.Va. - Charles Vohn Alt, 60, of Route 2, Box 35, Keyser, died Wednesday, April 29, 1998, at Wardensville.
Born on Dec. 3, 1937, at Alaska, W.Va., he was a son of Lucille Virginia (Knight) Alt, a resident of the Heartland of Keyser Nursing Home, and the late Homer Glen Alt Sr. He also was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Ashley Dawn Alt.
Mr. Alt was retired from the warehouse at Westvaco Luke Mill. He was a 1955 graduate of Fort Ashby School and was a U.S. Army veteran. He also was a member of Davis Lodge #51, A.F. & A.M.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Leona Jean (Gentry) Alt; two sons, Charles Vohn Alt Jr., and wife, Tracy, and Edward Scott Alt, and wife, Renae, all of Keyser; one daughter, Pam D. Fazenbaker, and husband, Doug, Keyser; two brothers, Calvin Alt, Keyser, Darwin Alt, Fort Ashby, W.Va.; three sisters, Joanne Llewellyn, Wauchula, Fla., Martha Spencer and Judy Staggs, both of Keyser; six grandchildren, Mia Alt, Holly Alt, Tasha Fazenbaker, Doug Fazenbaker Jr., Kacy Alt and Keely Alt.
Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Joseph Mercer officiating.
Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
STANLEY N. COSNER
FORT ASHBY, W.Va. - Stanley Nathan Cosner, 85, of Fort Ashby, went to be with the Lord on his 85th birthday.
Born Jan. 24, 1913, in Canaan Valley, he was the son of the late Gilbert and Edna (Cutlip) Cosner. He also was preceded in death by his son, the Rev. Stanley E. Cosner in 1995; and two brothers, Emwood Cosner and Harl Cosner.
Mr. Cosner had served in the U.S. Army. He retired from Cumberland Steel in 1975, where he had been a machinist.
He was a member of the Springfield Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include his wife, Susan (Brown) Cosner; his daughter-in-law, Beverly Cosner, Fort Ashby; one brother, French Cosner, Green Spring Valley; five sisters, Gladys Cheshire, Romney, Dorothy Messick, Fort Ashby, Martha Mullady, Romney, Juanita Pledger, Tennessee, and Audrey Saville, Romney; three grandchildren, Stanley E. Cosner III and wife Brenda, Charmaine Harris and husband Donnie, and Romaine Poling and husband John; and six great-grandchildren, LaRissia and Donnie Harris, Stanley IV, Brianne and Cassidy Cosner, and Kaylie Poling.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Route 28, Fort Ashby, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The service will be held on Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Springfield Assembly of God Church with the Rev. James Blubaugh officiating.
The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service.
EARL W. "BUDDY" EBERT
KEYSER, W.Va. - Earl W. "Buddy" Ebert, 74, of Route 4, Box 79-A, Keyser, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at the Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.
Born Dec. 3, 1923, at Keyser, he was the son of the late William L. Ebert and Irene E. (Whipp) Ebert Fischbach.
Mr. Ebert was a retired master watch maker, having owned and operated several jewelry businesses in Keyser and Piedmont, W.Va., for over 37 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a 1941 graduate of Keyser High School and attended Potomac State College. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Keyser; the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors; a member and Past Master of Davis Lodge #51 A.F. & A.M., Keyser; a member of Keyser Chapter #19 Royal Arch Masons; Damascus Commandery #23 Knights Templar; Alkire Chapter #10 Order of the Eastern Star; Queens Point Memorial Post #6775 VFW, McCoole, Md.; and Past President of the Keyser Rotary Club.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Ruth (Evans) Ebert; one son, Earl W. "Duke" Ebert, Jr., Morgantown, W.Va.; two daughters, Ruth I. "Missie" Lee, Chapel Hill, N.C., and Ann R. Roberts, Morgantown; one sister, Eileen Schuller, Boone, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Judson Pealer officiating. Interment will be in the Queens Point cemetery, Keyser.

LUTHER W. CLAY
PIEDMONT, W.Va. - Luther William Clay, 68, of 51 Jones St., Piedmont, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born March 26, 1929, in Piedmont, he was a son of Laura (Price) Clay, of Piedmont, and the late Willie Clay. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Clay; and a niece, Cindy Stradwick.
Mr. Clay was a former employee of the B&O; Railroad. He was a Baptist by faith. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he was a member of Aubrey-Robert Stewart VFW Post 5957, Piedmont; and a member of the Potomac Lodge 41, F & AM.
A well known baseball umpire, he served more than 25 years for the Tri-Towns Little League.
Surviving are his former wife, Deanna Bosley, Keyser; one daughter, Moniek France and husband Larry, Keyser; two brothers, Russell Clay and wife Sue Ellen, Keyser, and Victor Clay and wife Sherrie, Piedmont; four sisters, Norma Jean Clay, Frances Clay and Christine Clay, all of Piedmont, and Ruth Redman and husband Arnold, Keyser; three grandchildren, Ozeir, Omante and Omar France; and a stepdaughter, Camela Bosley, Petersburg.
Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, Md., on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Henderson Wheeler, Elder Lester Clifford, and the Rev. David Coleman officiating.
Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
Potomac Lodge 41 will hold a memorial service at the funeral home on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
The Aubrey-Robert Stewart VFW will hold a memorial service at the funeral home on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
SUSAN L. CARR
RIDGELEY, W.Va. - Susan Louise Carr, 92, of Ridgeley, died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at Hampshire Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 24, 1906, in Cumberland, Md., she was the daughter of the late Albert and Estella (Kight) Decker. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur J. Carr; and five children.
Mrs. Carr was Methodist by faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Vivian Miller, and Carolyn Ryan and husband Charles, all of Ridgeley; one son, Glenn E. Carr, Ridgeley; one sister, Nellie Baker, Short Gap; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., corner of Greene and Smallwood streets, Cumberland, on Friday from noon to 1 p.m.
The funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Harry L. Burchell Jr. officiating.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale, Md.
Pallbearers will be William Turner, Thomas Turner, Chuck Ryan Sr., Chuck Ryan Jr., Eric Clark and Bernie Clark.
