MARIE (DAY) POPE
PETERSBURG, W.Va. - Marie (Day) Pope, age 91, of Petersburg, died Saturday, May 23, 1998, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. She had been a resident of the Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg since April 1, 1997.
Born Nov. 2, 1906, at Arthur, she was the daughter of the late Roscoe C. and Estella (Parker) Day. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Roy P. Pope, on May 9, 1957; one son, Ralph R. Hartman; two step sons, Bob and James Pope; two brothers, Dwight and Brimlow Day; three sisters, Mildred Kessel and Merle Day, and by Betty Day Smith, who died May 4, 1998.
Marie attended St. John's Academy and Fairmont Business School. She graduated from Beauty School in Baltimore, Md., and owned and operated Modern Beauty Shop in Petersburg until her retirement in the spring of 1985. She was a charter member of the Petersburg Business and Professional Women's Club, and was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church.
Surviving are, one daughter, Peggy Sites, and husband, Otis, Petersburg; one step daughter, Bernice Arey, of Harrisonburg, Va.; one step son, Roy P. Pope Jr., Bridgewater, Va.; one sister, Evelyn Day Henderson, Petersburg; one brother-in-law, Reggie A. Smith, Petersburg; three grandchildren, Kenneth R. Shobe, Fisher, Jeanne M. Knotts, Ridgeley, Stoney R. Hartman, Petersburg; four great-grandchildren, Michael Knotts, JuliAnn Shobe, Kenneth Ethan Shobe and Jeremy Hartman; and a number of step grandchildren. Also several nieces and nephews survive.
Friends will be received at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Main Street United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Meredith Ball and Don Knotts officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Main Street United Methodist Church, to the Grant County Nursing Home, or to the charity of one's choice.
IVA C. PORTER
LAHMANSVILLE, W.Va. - Iva Catherine (Borror) Porter, 84, of Lahmansville, died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born Sept. 23, 1914, in Petersburg, she was a daughter of the late Arthur E. and Stella (Cox) Borror. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Charles William Porter, on July 5, 1978; a stepmother, Nannie Borror Westfall; one daughter, Betty Catherine Porter; one step-great-grandson, Patrick G. Kindrick; and one brother, Rennie Borror.
Mrs. Porter was a member of the Lahmansville United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Margarite P. and Donald L. Kindrick, Lahmansville; three step-grandsons; nine step-great-grandchildren; and six step-great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at Lahmansville United Methodist Church, Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. French Smith officiating.

CURTIS R. " RED" PORTMESS SR.
SHORT GAP, W.Va. - Curtis "Red" Randall Portmess Sr., 69, of Short Gap, died Sunday, May 31, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital Hospice.
Born Oct. 10, 1928, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Donald and Ruth (Hardman) Portmess. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou (Kessler) Portmess; and two brothers, Donald and Gilbert Portmess.
Mr. Portmess had been self-employed as a painting contractor. He served with the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Goodfellowship Club.
Survivors include six children, Regina Vassallo, Cumberland, Curtis R. Portmess Jr., Houghson, Calif., Dorothy Marple, Cumberland, Mary Lee Kenney, Cumberland, Claudell Edward Portmess/Charlie Snyder, Springfield, W.Va., and James Calvin Portmess, Short Gap; one sister, Eileen Martin, Baltimore; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; loving companion, Joyce Growden, Cumberland; and special friend, Norman Growden, Short Gap.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Sherrill Dillon officiating.
Interment will be in the Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

RICHARD POWERS
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Richard Powers, 66, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.
Born June 22, 1931, in Mount Savage, he was the son of the late James P. and Mary Poole Powers. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, James W. Powers and Regis Powers.
Mr. Powers was a private pilot. He was a retired air traffic controller from the Federal Aviation Administration and a retired MSgt. from the United States Air Force. He served in the Korean War and two tours in Vietnam.
He was a member of the VFW in Mount Savage, Md., the Short Gap Wing Piper Club and the 167th NCO CLub.
He was a graduate of Beall High School, Frostburg, Md., and Potomac State College in Keyser.
Surviving are his wife, Roxieanne Deskin Powers; two sisters, Kathryn Parrish, Melbourne, Fla., and Rosemary Eirich, Cumberland, Md.; three brothers, Leo Powers and George Powers, both of Cumberland, and James Powers, Mount Home, Ind.; one granddaughter, Taylor Martin; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no public viewing.
Memorial Services will be held at St. Patrick's Church, Mount Savage, on Saturday, April 25, 1998, at 10 a.m., and at the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, on Wednesday, April 29, 1998, at noon.
Memorial donations may be made to the local humane society.

JOSEPHINE "JO" POWNALL
SPRINGFIELD, W.Va. - Josephine "Jo" W. Pownall, 86, of Springfield, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at her residence.
She was born Feb. 8, 1912, in Round Bottom, the daughter of the late Elwood Hughes and Grace (Runion) Wagoner. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph "Rosie" I. Pownall, in October 1953.
Mrs. Pownall and her brother, Jack Wagoner, owned and operated Ren Roy Flowers, Cumberland, Md., from 1953 until 1996.
Mrs. Pownall was a member of the Springfield Presbyterian Church, Springfield. She was the treasurer of the Springfield Hill cemetery for 45 years.
Surviving are one son, Carl M. Pownall, Springfield; four brothers, E. Alex Wagoner, Martinsburg, Loy A. Wagoner, Annapolis, Md., C. Jack Wagoner, Cumberland, R. Dan Wagoner, New York City, N.Y.; four sisters, Maxine Mahood, Paw Paw, Mary Susan Williams, Romney, Hannah Grace Sincell, Oakland, Md., Martha Ann McLoughlin, Stockton, Calif.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at the Springfield Presbyterian Church, Springfield, on Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Sumner D. Sawyers and Ed Rawlings officiating.
EDNA SANDERS PRATT
MOOREFIELD, W.Va. - Edna Earle Sanders Pratt, age 92, of Moorefield, passed away Saturday night, Dec. 5, 1998, at the Pendleton County Nursing Home in Franklin where she had been a resident for a year.
She was the daughter of the late Linda Flippo Sanders and William B. Sanders.
She was born Aug. 23, 1906, at her paternal ancestral home, River View on the Rappahannock, White Stone, Virginia. She had been a resident of Moorefield since 1945 and was a member of Moorefield High School faculty from 1946-1971.
Mrs. Pratt was preceded in death by her husband, Courtney Lee Pratt, on Dec. 4, 1984; a brother; and two cousins.
She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Linda Sanders Treakle, White Stone.
Mrs. Pratt earned her B.A. degree from West Hampton College, University of Richmond, and later became a member of the Boatwright Society of Alumni. She earned her M.A. degree from West Virginia University, and while there became a member of Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, a National Honor Society, in Education. In 1965 she was initiated into Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Sorority. She had been a member of the Federated Women's Club of Moorefield since December 1946 and served as President from 1948-1950.
She joined Unit 64 American Legion Auxiliary, February 1946 and served on various committees over the years, especially active in Girls State. She had been a member of Moorefield Chapter #102 Order of the Eastern Star since 1951. In 1972 she joined South Branch Valley Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. Here she served as treasurer for six years and had served as chair of Honor Roll, Public Relations and librarian. She was a charter member of John Jolliffe Chapter, National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century in 1987.
Mrs. Pratt had been a member of White Stone United Methodist Church since 1922 and was affiliated with the Moorefield Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Hardy County Historical Society, Hardy County Retired School Employees, and was awarded the degree of Honorary Chapter Farmer in 1971 by the Moorefield FFA.
When she lived in Hampton, Va., she was active in First United Methodist Church, Newport News, Virginia Branch, American Association of University Women and the U.S.O., United Service Organization.
Mrs. Pratt requested that flowers and visitation be omitted. A funeral service will be conducted at the Elmore-Chambers Funeral Home on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. with Bruce A. MacBeth officiating. Burial will follow at the Olivet cemetery in Moorefield.
