SABRA MARKS PRICE
FORT ASHBY, W.Va. - Sabra Marks Price, 94, of Fort Ashby, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, at the Devlin Manor Nursing Home.
Born Sept. 1, 1903, in Barbour County, she was the daughter of the late Orestus and Ada Ferena (Lough) Marks.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Fred B. Price; one infant son, Fred Price; two daughters, Betty Malone and son-in-law, Kenneth Malone, and Freda Lou Swick; and three brothers, Virgil Marks, Olen Marks and Arnett Marks.
Mrs. Price was a retired teacher from the Mineral County Board of Education. She had taught at Galoway, Short Gap and Fort Ashby schools.
She was a member of Point Pleasant Baptist Church, the West Virginia Retired Teachers' Association, 4-H All-Stars, and was a past 4-H Leader.
Survivors include her son-in-law, Allen Swick, Bloomery; "daughter-in-law" Joanne Malone, Fort Ashby; three granddaughters, Barbara Malone, Susanville, Calif., Sharon Knotts, Short Gap, and Maureen Schmitt, Morgantown; five grandsons, Pat Malone, Verona, Va., Fred Swick and David Swick, both of Poolesville, Md., Mark Swick, Rockville, Md., and Todd Swick, Gaithersburg, Md.; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home Inc., Route 28, Fort Ashby on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Warren Shields officiating.
Serving as pallbearers will be Mark Swick, Todd Swick, Pat Malone, Rodney Knotts, Shaun Knotts and Joel Knotts.
Memorial contributions may be made to either the American Lung Association, 11 Columbia St., Cumberland, MD 21502; or to the American Cancer Society, 111 S. George St., Cumberland, MD 21502.
MR. DONA S. PROPST
FRANKLIN, W.Va. - Mr. Dona Sheldon Propst, 60, of Franklin, died Wednesday at the Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, Va.
He was born Oct. 10, 1938, at Harrisonburg, and was a son of Kathleen V. Propst, Franklin, and the late Dona A. Propst.
He was presently serving his third term as Sheriff of Pendleton County. He had also served one term as Assessor of Pendleton County. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Franklin. He served 22 years in the U.S. Army, retiring as Sergeant Major. Thirty-three months of that time was served in Vietnam as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division.
He was a member of the Pendleton Masonic Lodge #144 A.F. & A.M. in Franklin, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #138, a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Franklin Lions Club, and the Franklin Moose Lodge.
In addition to his mother he is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Marie Propst, Boca Raton, Fla., Teresa Diane Propst, Franklin; one adopted son, Robert Edgar Propst, Newport News, Va.; two sisters, Kitty L. Hupp, Sylvania, Ohio, Linda S. Propst, Arlington, Va.; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Faith Lutheran Church in Franklin by Pastor Mary Poston.
Burial will be in the Cedar Hill cemetery at Franklin, with graveside rites held by the Pendleton Masonic Lodge #144.
The family received friends at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Faith Lutheran Church, the Franklin Fire Department or Rescue Squad, to the Pendleton Nursing Home, or to the charity of one's choice.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home, Franklin.
JAMES W. PURCELL
BUNKER HILL, W.Va. - James Ward Purcell, 84, of 219 Fegan Road, Bunker Hill, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at his residence.
Born Jan. 22, 1914, in Brucetown, Va., he was the son of the late Samuel and Hettie Ward Swimley Byrd.
Mr. Purcell had worked as a millwright. He was a member of Carpenters and Joiners Union 1548 in Baltimore.
Surviving are his wife, Joyce Beeghly Purcell, Bunker Hill, whom he married
on Sept. 29, 1956 in Cumberland, Md.; a daughter, Patricia P. Dawson, Winchester, Va.; a brother, Richard Clark Purcell, Brucetown; one grandson; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Jones Funeral Home, 228 S. Pleasant Valley Road, Winchester, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Khrista Ferguson officiating.
Burial will be in the Paynes Chapel cemetery, Frederick County, Va.
Pallbearers will be Glen William Russell, Larry Allen Russell, Larry Lindamood, William McIntosh, Scott Fiddler and Mark Michaels.
WILDA ALLEN PYLES
FORT ASHBY, W.Va. - Wilda Allen Pyles, 95, of Fort Ashby, W.Va., died Friday, July 31, 1998, at the Dawn View Manor Nursing Home.
Born Dec. 15, 1902, in Frankfort, now Fort Ashby, she was the daughter of the late Robert Rosser and Lillie May (Daniels) Allen.
Mrs. Pyles was a teacher at Turners Run School, near Fort Ashby, and the North Texas School, near Augusta, around 1921-1923.
She was a member of the Fort Ashby Presbyterian Church for many years and was elected as one of the first women elders of the church in 1964. After the Fort Ashby Church closed, she continued as an elder of the Springfield Presbyterian Church, where she was elected Elder Emeritus when she was forced to resign because of her health. She also was a member of the Fort Ashby Homemakers for over 30 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Seymour L. Pyles on Aug. 22, 1964. He also was a teacher at Central and Horn Camp schools in Hampshire County around 1910-1923. He was a retired city letter carrier in Cumberland.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Allen in 1976 and Vernon Allen in 1942; one son, Robert F. Pyles, a Maryland Toll Facilities policeman, who was killed while on duty in September 1986 at Havre de Grace, Md. His funeral in Fort Ashby was attended by hundreds of policemen from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Ohio and West Virginia. A granddaughter, Debra Lash died in November 1997.
Surviving are one son, Bill Pyles and wife, Carole, Titusville, Fla.; two daughters, Bernice Doris, Latrobe, Pa.; and Virginia Lee Shanholtz and husband, Bill, Tyler, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Clair Pyles, Port Deposit, Md.; two brothers, Paul Allen and wife, Dine, Springfield; and James Allen and wife, Willa, Fort Ashby; two sisters, Sara Parry, Frostburg, Md.; and Eva Smith, Fort Ashby; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home Inc., Route 28, Fort Ashby, on Monday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joe Pancake officiating. Interment will be in the Fort Ashby cemetery.
A memorial service by the Fort Ashby Homemakers will be held in the funeral home on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
CHRISTINA QUINN
KEYSER, W.Va. - Christina (Cutter) Quinn, 71, of 419 Ward Ave., Keyser, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.
Born Sept. 20, 1927, at Lonaconing, Md., she was a daughter of the late James and Hazel A. (Roberts) Cutter. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Quinn.
Mrs. Quinn was a retired beautician with the Empress Beauty Salon, Westernport, Md.
Surviving are two brothers, Charles T. Cutter, Keyser, and James C. Cutter, St. Petersburg, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joseph Gerstell officiating.
RICHARD R. RICHMOND
FORT ASHBY, W.Va. - Richard Russell Richmond, 81, of Fort Ashby, died Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, at Moran Manor Nursing Home.
Born March 2, 1917, in Keyser, he was the son of the late O.E. and Myrtle (Smith) Richmond.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Eva G. (Pyles) Richmond in 1997; and one brother, Ernest Richmond.
Mr. Richmond served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He received 14 battle participation awards, including the Normandy Campaign and the Air Offensive Europe Campaign. He was the recipient of the European-African- Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with four Bronze Stars and one silver star.
Mr. Richmond retired with 29 years' service at the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory, where he had been a machinist.
He attended Trinity United Methodist Church and was a lifetime member of Nancy Hanks Post #3518, V.F.W., Keyser.
Survivors include nieces and nephews, Patricia Streett, Nancy McCaslin, Joseph Deremer, Blair Deremer, Rita Daugherty, and Harriet Lewis; great-nieces and nephews, Mark Shriver, Douglas M. McKenzie, Blaine Deremer, Ronald Watson, Isaac Lewis, Lori Deremer, Becky Lewis and Sarah Lewis; a cousin, Louise Turbin; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Broome and Ruth Deremer; and William Frase, with whom he shared a foster home.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Inc., Route 28, Fort Ashby, on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dallas Forren officiating.
Military honors will be accorded by the local Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
