FRANK SULTZER
KEYSER, W.Va. - Frank Sultzer, 80, of 36 S. Water St., Keyser, died Monday, May 11, 1998, at the Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born May 12, 1917, at Alexandria, Va., he was a stepson of the late Henry Sultzer and the son of the late Bridget (Mills) Sultzer.
Mr. Sultzer was a retired Master Sergeant with the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a Pearl Harbor Survivor and was a P.O.W.
Mr. Sultzer had served as police chief for the towns of Westernport, Md., and Luke, Md.
He was a member of Davis Lodge #51 A.F. & A.M., Keyser; Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Toledo; Queens Point Memorial Post #6775 VFW, McCoole, Md.; and Victory Post #155 American Legion, Westernport, Md.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth V. (Miller) Sultzer; one son, Frank R. Sultzer, Fruitland, Fla.; one daughter, Barbara J. Davis, Keyser; one brother, Charles Sultzer, Swanton, Md.; three sisters, Winnie Ordner, Westernport, Sue Gambini, New Creek, Penny Delligatti, LaVale, Md.; and three grandchildren.
Mr. Sultzer requested that the funeral services be private and be conducted at the convenience of his family.
Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
The Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, is in charge of the arrangements.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the donor's favorite charity.
GERTRUDE SUMMERFIELD
MONTROSE, W.Va. - Gertrude Summerfield, age 77, a resident of Montrose, passed away Friday afternoon at her home. Her death was unexpected.
She was born July 10, 1921, at Wimer, a daughter of the late Amos and Texie Wilmoth White. On Nov. 16, 1936, she was married
to Willie T. Summerfield who preceded her in death on Feb. 17, 1983. Also preceding her in death were one grandson, Timothy Summerfield; six brothers, John, Gerald, Myron, Forest, Artenis and Cleveland A. White; and one sister, Minnie K. White.
Mrs. Summerfield was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her family and friends were her life, and her generous, loving and gentle ways were known by countless neighbors and friends. As anyone who knew her can attest, she was an excellent cook and she loved to help her friends at church make apple butter in the fall. Given the opportunity she would have fed the world.
She was a homemaker and at various times had worked for Neale's Drug Store, Rite Aid and the Montgomery Ward Store. She attended the Israel United Methodist Church at Kerens.
She is survived by five sons, Jeff, Bill and Lewis Summerfield, all at home, Tom Summerfield of Elkins and Donald Summerfield of Cresaptown, Md.; and five daughters, Brenda Barb, Annabelle Baer and Lucille "Tiny" Vanscoy, all of Elkins, Ellen Channels, Montrose, and Norma Robertson, Salisbury, Pa. Four sisters, Mrs. Betty Paugh, Mrs. Martha Fincham, Mrs. Louise Clayton and Mrs. Lucy Lantz, all of Elkins; 18 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held on Monday at the Tomblyn Funeral Home, Elkins.
Interment was in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman.
BETTY F. SHIRLEY
BURLINGTON, W.Va. - Betty F. Shirley, 63, of Shirley Lane, Burlington, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, at the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
Born on June 26, 1935, at Moorefield, she was a daughter of the late James William and Alice Pauline (Whetzel) Helmick.
Mrs. Shirley was employed as a private home health care worker and was a member of the Markwood United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Buradean Shirley Jr.; three daughters, Nancy A. Marshall, and fiance Dwayne Whiteman, Moorefield, Delores A. Shirk, and companion James Major, New Creek, Beverly J. Kifer, and husband, James, Moorefield; one brother, Monterey Helmick, Fulks Run, Va.; two sisters, Thelma Ayres and Alfreda Leatherman, both of Moorefield; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild on the way.
Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Thomas Anderson officiating.
Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
HATTIE E. SHIRLEY
BURLINGTON, W.Va. - Hattie Elizabeth Shirley, 85, formerly of Burlington, died Friday, April 10, 1998, at the Menno-Haven Nursing Home, Chambersburg, Pa., where she had been a resident for the past 10 years.
Born June 22, 1912, at Maysville, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Albert Davis and Bessie (Lyons) Davis Berg. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil William Shirley, on Aug. 25, 1984; and one brother, Russell Davis, in May 1978.
Mrs. Shirley was a member of the Markwood United Methodist Church, Burlington, where she taught Sunday School for many years.
She is survived by two daughters, Thelma Hoffman and husband, Bob, Barstow, Calif., Georgia Borror and husband, Marvin, Chambersburg; three grandchildren, Cynthia Hoffman, Barstow, the Rev. William Borror, Media, Pa., Elizabeth Stahli, Hagerstown, Md.; five great-grandchildren, Christopher Chisam, Barstow, Benjamin Borror, Adam Borror, Jonathan Borror and Peter Borror, all of Media; and three sisters, Viola Martin, Burlington, Josephine Davis, Fort Pierce, Fla., and Virginia Heacock, Sandusky, Mich.
Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Tuesday, April 14, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday, April 15, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. William L. Borror officiating. Interment will be in the Thrush cemetery, Antioch.
JONAH J. SHOCKEY
MOOREFIELD, W.Va. - Jonah J. Shockey, 75, of Moorefield, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997, at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, Va.
Born Oct. 6, 1922, in Hardy County, he was the son of the late James and Sarah (Hose) Shockey. He also was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Mr. Shockey was a delivery man for Southern States Petroleum. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of American Legion Post 64, Moorefield; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9606, Moorefield; and the Order of the Purple Heart.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred (Cain) Shockey; one daughter, Lisa Shockey-Kessel, Moorefield; two brothers, Wayne Shockey and Donald Shockey, Moorefield; and four sisters, Lola Webster, Myrtle Webster and Mary Ratliff, all of Moorefield, and Pauline Baldwin, Baltimore.
Friends may call at the Fraley Funeral Home, Moorefield, after 8 a.m. on Friday, and the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A Veterans Memorial Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren, near Moorefield, on Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Randy Ours officiating.
Interment will follow in the Olivet cemetery, Moorefield, where military graveside rites will be accorded by the Moorefield Veterans Honor Guard.
The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the services.
J. CURTIS "DEWEY" SHOEMAKER
NEW CREEK, W.Va. - J. Curtis "Dewey" Shoemaker, 44, of HC 75, Box 178, New Creek, died Saturday, April 25, 1998, at his residence.
Born on July 24, 1953, at Keyser, he was a son of Mary Elizabeth (Davy) Shoemaker, New Creek, and the late Earl Curtis Shoemaker. He also was preceded in death by an infant brother, Glen Shoemaker.
Mr. Shoemaker was a retired truck driver. He was a Keyser High School graduate. He attended Markwood United Methodist Church and Kelley Chapel Church of the Brethren, Burlington.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are a son, Travis Shoemaker; a daughter, Teresa Shoemaker, both of Keyser; three brothers, Robert Andrews and wife, Florence, Keyser, Earl D. Shoemaker and wife, Barbara, Burlington, Jeffrey L. Shoemaker, Front Royal, Va.; five sisters, Joyce Norvell and husband, Don, Elizabeth City, N.C., Sarah Harris and husband, Guy, with whom he resided, New Creek, Earlene Bamburg and husband, Chuck, Keyser, Helen Sirk and husband, Dickie, Romney, Linda Cox and husband, Chris, Front Royal.
Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday at 11 a.m.
Mr. Shoemaker requested that following the visitation and funeral services, that his body be cremated. Interment will be in the Old Pine cemetery, Purgitsville.

ROBERT L. SHORT
KEYSER, W.Va. - Robert L. Short, 73, a resident of Moran Manor Nursing Home, Westernport, formerly of 25 James St., Keyser, died on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born July 25, 1925, in Keyser, he was the son of the late Humbird L. Short and Thelma E. (Graham) Short Oates. He was also preceded in death by a brother, William J. Short.
Mr. Short was a self-employed painter, and he was a United Methodist by faith. He was a World War II U.S. Coast Guard veteran and was a member of the VFW Post #3518 Nancy Hanks, of Keyser.
Surviving are his daughter, Deborah L. Beeman and husband Dale, Barton; two grandsons, Tim Beeman and wife, Donna, Steve Beeman and wife, Cindy. He is also survived by a great-grandson, Alexander S. Beeman.
Services will be conducted at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser, on Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Samuel E. Starling Jr. officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
