M. DOROTHY SMITH
CUMBERLAND - Mary Dorothy Smith, 83, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Jan. 26, 1915, in Flintstone, she was the daughter of the late James Randolph House and the late Mary Jane (Burley) House. She also was preceded in death by a husband, Lawrence C. Smith, on Nov. 25, 1997; two sisters, Elizabeth Lakin and Mildred Gottschalk; and one brother, James H. House. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Mrs. Smith was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Frostburg State College and the University of Maryland. She was employed by the Allegany County Board of Education. She was a retired teacher of 40 years from Flintstone Elementary School.

She was a life member of Maryland Congress of Parents and Teachers; member Delta Kappa Gamma Society International; past president of American Association of University Women; member Cumberland Chapter 56 Order of the Eastern Star; member Re Temple 118 Daughters of the Nile; and past vice president and secretary of the Cumberland Church Women United. She was a former member of Flintstone United Methodist Church where she served six years as president of the United Methodist Women; chaplain of the Senior Citizens Social Retirement Club; recruiter for Meals on Wheels Volunteers; member AARP Allegany Chapter 2400; 50-year member and officer of the Flintstone Homemakers; and member of the National Retired Teachers Association, Maryland and Allegany County retired teachers associations.

Surviving are a son, James Larry Smith and wife Donna, Flintstone; a granddaughter, Robin (Smith) Myers and husband Jack, Hagerstown; two step-grandsons, Michael and Todd Pertko, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one step-granddaughter, Hannah Pertko, Myrtle Beach; three nieces, Rebecca Pullig, Wilmington, Del., Laura Jean Shaff, Frederick, and Jane McCormick, Finksburg; and two nephews, Arthur Lakin, College Park, and Tom Gottschalk, Westminster.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at noon with the Rev. Lee Brotemarkle and the Rev. Robert Nair officiating.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.

NANCY JEAN SMITH
KEYSER, W.Va. - Nancy Jean Smith, 55, of 176 S. Water St., Keyser, died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.
Born April 29, 1943, at Cumberland, Md., she was a daughter of Mary G. (Staggs) Ward Flanagan and the late George Ward. She also was preceded in death by her step-father, Donald L. Flanagan Sr.

Mrs. Smith was a former employee of the Tri-Towns Theatre and Sears. She was a 1961 graduate of Bruce High School, Westernport, Md., and a 1963 graduate of Scott's Beauty School, Cumberland. She was a member of Dawson United Methodist Church, Dawson, Md., the Nancy Hanks Post #3518 V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, and the Women of the Moose #191.

Surviving, in addition to her mother are, her husband, Virgil Jan Smith; two brothers, William Ward, Rawlings, Md., George Ward, Fort Worth, Texas; two sisters, Patricia Adams, Lynchburg, Va., Julia Hott, Manchester, Md.; one step-brother, Donald L. Flanagan Jr., Rutherford, Va.; one step-sister, Donna Jean Taylor, Middletown, Md.

Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John F. Footen officiating.

Interment will be in the Dawson cemetery, Dawson, Md.

REGINA M. SMITH
PIEDMONT, W.Va. - Regina M. Smith, 82, of 121 W. Hampshire St., Piedmont, died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born May 30, 1915, in Westernport, Md., she was the daughter of the late Frank Kenney and Florence (Kight) Kenney.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the Piedmont Presbyterian Church and the Mill Creek Country Club.

Surviving are her husband of 62 years, William B. Smith Jr.; two sons, William B. Smith III and wife Noreen, and Phillip G. Smith and wife Mary Ellen, all of Piedmont; three sisters, Norma Kenney, San Diego, Calif., Betty Perdue and husband Jack, Seneca, S.C., and Joyce Vogley, Massilon, Ohio; two brothers, Dr. Harold Kenney and wife Margaret, Akron, Ohio, and Gerald Kenney, Orlando, Fla; four grandchildren, William B. Smith IV and wife Amy, Keyser, Karen Umstot, Piedmont, Todd Smith and wife Dianne, and Scott Smith and wife Kelli, Keyser; and eight great-grandchildren, Chip, Ivy, Casey, Kellon, Bradley, Kaitlin and Paige Smith, all of Keyser, and Ashley Umstot, Piedmont.

The family will receive friends at the Fredlock Funeral Home, Piedmont, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. John Garrison, interim pastor, officiating.

Interment will follow in the Philos cemetery, Westernport. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Memorial donations may be made to the Piedmont Presbyterian Church.

TERRY D. SMITH
KEYSER, W.Va. - Terry D. Smith, 24, of Route 4, Keyser, formerly of Bloomington, Md., died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
He was born July 18, 1973, in Cumberland, the son of Ronald Smith and Mary (Beane) Smith of Bloomington.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Harley Smith; and maternal grandparents, James Beane and Macel (Davis) Beane Thorne.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his Fiancee, Kelly Beavers; one brother, Ronald Smith Jr., and wife, Angie, Friendsville, Md.; one sister, Michelle Lynn Smith, and fiance, Danny Rodeheaver, Bloomington; paternal grandmother, Bertha Smith, Bloomington; a special nephew, Johnathon Smith; two special nieces, Brittany Beavers and Cortney Riggleman; and numerous aunts and uncles.

Terry was a 1991 graduate of Westmar High School and the Center for Career and Technical Education, and he was employed by Delanos Carpet of Terra Alta. He was a member of the Kelly Mansfield Post #52 S.A.L. He also was an avid hunter, and he loved to water ski.

Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, Md., on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Christopher Crawford officiating.

Interment will be in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland, Md.

Pallbearers will be Todd Hess, Jim Baker, Jim Paugh, Roger Goodwin, Tommy O'Brien, Johnny Johnson, Kurt Kooken and Jim Wilson.

WILLIAM SMITH JR.
PIEDMONT, W.Va. - William B. Smith Jr., 86, of 121 West Hampshire Street, Piedmont, died at Heartland Nursing Home on Dec. 26, 1998.
He was the son of the late William B. Smith Sr. and Lenora (Schade) Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife Regina M. (Kenny) Smith; one brother, Don Smith; and one sister, Jean Scott.

He is survived by one sister, Janet Purdy, McCoole, Md.; two sons, William B. Smith III and wife, Noreen, Piedmont, and Phillip Smith and wife, Mary Ellen, Piedmont; four grandchildren, William B. Smith IV and wife, Amy, Keyser, Karen Harvey, Piedmont, Todd Smith and wife, Dianne, Keyser, and Scott Smith and wife, Kelli, Keyser; and eight great-grandchildren, Chip, Ivy, Casey, Kellon, Bradley, Caitlin, Paige Smith of Keyser, and Ashley Umstot, Piedmont.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of Bruce High School and a member of the Mount Carbon Lodge #28, the Mill Creek Country Club, and the Piedmont Presbyterian Church. He retired in 1978 as the co-owner and operator of the Piedmont Foundry and Machine Company.

Friends will be received at the Fredlock Funeral Home on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with Father Ivan Lebar, T.O.R. of Assumption Church, Keyser, officiating.

The family requests that donations be made to the Tri-Towns Rescue Squad, the American Cancer Society, or the Piedmont Presbyterian Church.

WILLIAM J. "BILLY" SMITH JR.
KEYSER, W.Va. - William J. "Billy" Smith Jr., 58, formerly of Terri Street, Keyser, and formerly of Piedmont, died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.
Born on Nov. 22, 1939, he was the son of the late William J. Smith Sr. and Thelma W. (Fisher) Smith.

Mr. Smith was a retired school teacher, having worked in the Washington, D.C., public schools, and also was a substitute teacher in the Mineral County School System. He attended the Walden Methodist Church, Piedmont.

He is survived by his wife, Rose B. Smith; and one son, Shawn D. Smith, Richmond, Va.

Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 7 to 7:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. officiated by Richard Peck.

Interment will be private.

DR. BRUCE O. SNIDER
KEYSER, W.Va. - Dr. Bruce Owen Snider, 84, of 1325 Lynmar St., Keyser, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, at his residence after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Born Dec. 10, 1913, at Cumberland, Md., he was a son of the late Frank and Olive Leola (Hedrick) Snider.

Dr. Snider practiced dentistry for over 50 years at 39 N. Main St. in Keyser. Prior to that he had served as a dental officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

Dr. Snider was actively involved in scouting as a youth and had the distinction of being named Keyser's first Eagle Scout on May 9, 1931. He was a 1932 graduate of Keyser High School. He then attended Potomac State College until 1934 where he played basketball under the late Coach Harley O. Staggers Sr. He went on to the Potomac Valley Hospital School of X-ray and Laboratory Technicians and was then employed there as a Laboratory Technician. He was employed as a Medical Technician with the U.S. Public Health Service at the U.S. Narcotic Hospital in Lexington, Ky., from 1935-1938, while also attending the University of Kentucky.

Dr. Snider began his dental education at the former Medical College of Virginia (now Virginia Commonwealth University) at Richmond, Va., where he was a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon honor society School of Dentistry and Sigma Zeta Gamma Chapter National Honorary Fraternity and Advisory Council. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree on June 1, 1942, and following graduation accepted a teaching appointment as Associate Professor of Operative Dentistry at the Medical College, a position he held until June 1943.

Dr. Snider was commissioned a dental officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve on Feb. 27, 1942, and entered the service on May 24, 1943. He served in the 87th Seabee Battalion on Saipan and Okinawa during World War II. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and American Campaign Victory Medal. Honorably discharged on Feb. 25, 1946, he immediately opened his dental practice in Keyser. He did post-graduate study in oral surgery at Ohio State University in 1949. He retired on Dec. 31, 1996.

Dr. Snider was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, Chapter #4106; Mineral County Senior Citizens; Grace United Methodist Church, Keyser; and was a life member of Queens Point Memorial Post #6775 VFW, McCoole, Md. He attended the Keyser Church of the Brethren with his wife.

Surviving are his wife, Naomi (Pancake) Snider, whom he married on Dec. 24, 1959; one daughter, Anna Kathryn Hoisington, and husband, David, Everett, Wa.; one brother, Dr. Hansel H. Snider, Moorefield; one granddaughter, Shireen Fawn Boone, Everett; one great-grandson, Camyn Scott Boone, Everett; one nephew, William F. Snider, and wife, Wilma, Port Orange, Fla.; one great-nephew, Steven W. Snider, Port Orange; one special brother-in-law, C. William "Billy" Pancake, and wife, Saundra, Keyser; and one special niece, Anastasia "Stacey" Boggs, Keyser.

Dr. Snider requested that his body be cremated. Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial service will be conducted in the funeral home by Queens Point Memorial Post #6775 VFW, McCoole, on Sunday at 6:45 p.m.

A memorial service will be held at the Keyser Church of the Brethren on Monday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Joyce E. Petry and the Rev. Sue Culbertson Jarrett officiating. Interment will be private in the Wardensville cemetery, Wardensville.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to either the Building Fund of the Keyser Church of the Brethren, Main Street and Fort Avenue, Keyser, WV 26726; the Memorial Fund of Grace United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 40, Keyser, WV 26726; or to the Potomac Valley Hospital Hospice, 167 S. Mineral St., Keyser, WV 26726 (Attn: Mr. Larry Abrams, Administrator).
