PAUL N. TWYMAN
PIEDMONT, W.Va. - Paul N. Twyman, 64, of 119 Erin St., Piedmont, died on Thursday at Potomac Valley Hospital.
Born Aug. 19, 1933, in Piedmont, he was the son of the late Bennie Twyman and Bertha (Good) Twyman.
Mr. Twyman was Baptist by faith. He was a member of the Washington Smith Post #152 American Legion, Keyser, and the Aubrey Robert Stewart VFW Post #5957. He was a veteran of The Korean Conflict, having served in the United States Army and the United States Air Force. He also was an avid fisherman and hunter.
Surviving are his wife, Rosalie A. (Clifford) Twyman; one son and two daughters, Jerome Paul Twyman, Keyser, Stacey Twyman, Piedmont, Rosalyn (Twyman) Hoffman, and husband, Clarence, Peoria, Ill.; and one brother Dr. Daniel Twyman, and wife, Patricia, San Diego, Calif.; three grandchildren, Autumn Twyman, Gianna Hoffman and Natasha Twyman; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Fredlock Funeral Home, Piedmont, on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Piedmont, on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Henderson Wheeler, the Rev. David Coleman and the Rev. Lester Clifford officiating.
Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
ELVA E. TYLER
KEYSER, W.Va. - Elva E. Tyler, 92, a resident of the Heartland of Keyser Nursing Home, formerly of 226 S. Main St., Keyser, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, at Potomac Valley Hospital.
Born Sept. 4, 1905, in Keyser, she was the daughter of the late J. Zack and Eudora Mae (Welch) Stewart. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Otis Tyler, on Sept. 11, 1975.
Mrs. Tyler was a member of the Keyser Church of the Brethren.
Friends will be received at the Markwood McKenzie Funeral Home, Keyser, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Keyser Church of the Brethren on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joyce E. Petry officiating.
Interment will be Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
SARAH "SUE" UMSTOT
SHORT GAP, W.Va. - Friends will be receeived for Sarah "Sue" E. Umstot at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m.
At Mrs. Umstot's request, her body will be cremated.
BENJAMIN VALENTINE
KEYSER, W.Va. - Benjamin R. Valentine, 101, of the Heartland of Keyser, formerly of Ridgeley, W.Va., and Cumberland, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at the Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.
Born May 11, 1896, in Ridgeley, he was the son of the late Frank and Alice (Martin) Valentine. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Goldie R. (Stewart) Valentine, in 1991. Mr. Valentine was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Valentine enlisted in the United States Army on June 26, 1918, and was promoted to sergeant on Dec. 4, 1918, in the Quartermaster Corp. He received an honorable discharge on May 6, 1919.
Mr. Valentine owned his own brick-laying business and enjoyed spending his free time repairing and working on radios.
He traveled to Washington, D.C., in November, 1993, where he was presented a medal of honor by President Bill Clinton.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
There will be no visitation on Monday.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joyce Petry officiating.
Military honors will be accorded at the graveside by the local combined veterans honor guard.
CHARLES E. VANCE
WARDENSVILLE, W.Va. - Charles E. "Pete" Vance, 72, of Wardensville, died Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
Born Jan. 1, 1926, in Mathias, he was the son of the late Kenneth G. Vance and Edith (Cooper) Vance. He also was preceded in death by a son, Thomas S. Scott.
Mr. Vance was a retired social studies and physical education teacher. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II and a 1951 graduate of Shepherd College.
He served 36 years as head basketball coach at Wardensville High School. He was Coach of the Year three times in the Potomac Valley Conference and was named Coach of the Year twice by the Winchester Star. He was named Athletic Director of the Year once for West Virginia, and was named a West Virginia Centennial Top Athlete in 1963.
He was a member of the Wardensville Presbyterian Church and the Wardensville Lions Club.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia (Scott) Vance, of Wardensville, whom he married
on May 30, 1952, in Sissonville; five sons, Michael E. Vance, Harpers Ferry, George E. Vance, Wardensville, Robert A. Vance, Morgantown, William L. Vance, Winchester, and James W. Vance, Wardensville; one daughter, Nancy K. Hahn, Wardensville; two sisters, Geraldine Kent, Cross Junction, Va., and Patricia Sherman, Fort Ashby; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be conducted at the Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, LLC, Wardensville, on Friday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. John D. Sterrett III and Dr. Charles Norville officiating.
Pallbearers will be Eric McKeever, David Miller Jr., Dennis Brill, Fred Hahn, John Hahn and James Dyer.

OLIVER "SPEED" VANMETER
KEYSER, W.Va. - Oliver H. "Speed" VanMeter, 77, of 152 Front St., Keyser, died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at the Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born on Sept. 25, 1920, at Keyser, he was a son of the late Elijah and Virginia (Blizzard) VanMeter. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Janet L. (Haines) VanMeter, on Jan. 2, 1995; and one son, Kenneth VanMeter, in 1994.
Mr. VanMeter was a retired self-employed bricklayer. He was a member of the Bonnieview Apostolic Chapel. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was a life member of Nancy Hanks Post #3518, VFW, Keyser.
Surviving are seven sons, Tom VanMeter, and wife, Brenda, McCoole, Md., Lenny VanMeter, and wife, Ginger, Dave VanMeter, and wife, Nancy, Dale VanMeter, and wife, Kara, John VanMeter, and wife, Brenda, Ronnie VanMeter, all of Keyser, and Bill VanMeter, and wife, Cheryl, Florida; three sisters, Alice Fertig and Elizabeth Martin, both of Keyser, and Ethel Rogers, Florida; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Bonnieview Apostolic Chapel on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Daniel Garlitz and the Rev. James Williamson officiating. The body will be taken to the church to lie in state one hour prior to services.
THOMAS H. "PETEY" VAN METER
ELK GARDEN, W.Va. - Thomas Harrison "Petey" Van Meter, 62, of Elk Garden, died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 23, 1936, in Moorefield, he was a son of the late William Thomas and Julia (Moyers) Van Meter.
Mr. Van Meter was a retired coal miner.
Surviving are five sons, Pinky Van Meter and Andrew Propst, both of Elk Garden, Keith Van Meter, Westernport, Md., George Van Meter, Mount Storm, and Delbert Van Meter, Rawlings, Md.; four daughters, Beverly Hipp, Mount Storm, Victoria Likens, Fountain, June Likens, Maysville, and Sharon Fletcher, Aurora; two brothers, Judas Van Meter, Mount Storm, and Kenneth Van Meter, Crellin, Md.; two sisters, Sharon Paugh, Elk Garden, and Barbara Rinker, Lonaconing, Md.; a special friend, Becky Propst, Elk Garden; and 13 grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller, Md., on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Donald E. Marple officiating.
