CHARLES A. SPENCER, SR.
PAW PAW, W.Va. - Charles Alonzo "Plug" Spencer Sr., 72, of Paw Paw, went to be with his Father Tuesday, Aug. 5, 1997, at his home.
Born Jan. 13, 1925, in Paw Paw, he was the son of the late Alonzo and Pauline (Allen) Spencer. He also was preceded in death by one daughter, Frances Marie Spencer; one son, Herman L. Spencer; three sisters, Christine Fields, Rosaline Fields and Dixie Ann Spencer; and two brothers, Belmont "Bootie" Spencer and Leon "Poodley" Spencer.
Mr. Spencer was a member of the Paw Paw United Methodist Church. He served in the US Army during World War II with Company "D" of the 374th Engineer Battalion and was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, the American Theater Service Ribbon and the World War II Victory Service Ribbon. He was a member of the Wappocomo VFW Post 1101, Romney. For many years, he owned and operated his own plumbing business in Paw Paw. He worked for The O'Sullivan Company, Winchester, Va. He also worked with the Town of Paw Paw Water Department and he was a cut-off saw operator with the Raygold Cabinet Company, Paw Paw.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years Dollie Nora (Anderson) Spencer, Paw Paw; three daughters, Dixie A. Henderson, Anaheim, Calif., Betty Green, Hagerstown, Md., and Melissa D. Brown, Yuma, Ariz.; five sons, Charles A. Spencer Jr., Hagerstown, Md., Gilbert L. Spencer, Norman Spencer and James R. Spencer, all of Paw Paw, and Anthony A. Spencer, Cumberland, Md.; three sisters, Louise Powell, Cumberland, Md., Carolyn Enos and Betty Lou Clark, both of Harrisburg, Pa.; two brothers, Bing Spencer, Harrisburg, Pa., and James "Schooner" Spencer, Paw Paw; 17 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends will be received at the Paw Paw United Methodist Church, Lee Street, Paw Paw, on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the church on Thursday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Nancy Ward officiating.
Interment, will full military graveside honors, will be in the Camp Hill cemetery, Paw Paw.
Arrangements are being handled by the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs.
ELSIE V. SPENCER
KEYSER, W.Va. - Elsie V. Spencer, 86, of Route 1, Box 223, Keyser, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at the Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.
Born Oct. 1, 1911, at Cabin Run, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John and Anna (Moore) Urice.
Mrs. Spencer was the secretary for Spencer's Trucking, Keyser. She attended the Fountain United Brethren in Christ Church, Keyser.
Surviving are two sons, Delbert J. "Jack" Spencer, Apopka, Fla., and Harold L. Spencer, Keyser; eight grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Michael Dean officiating.
Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
VAUDA P. STAGGS
KEYSER, W.Va. - Vauda Pauline Staggs, 77, of Route 1, Box 95, Keyser, died Friday, Feb. 14, 1997, at the home of her daughter, Sandra E. Matlick, Keyser.
Born March 28, 1919, at Martin, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late George V. and Meribah (Rotruck) Hines. She also was preceded in death by her husband, James Ernest Staggs, on July 17, 1985; and one brother, Victor "Pete" Hines, in January 1997.
Mrs. Staggs was a member of the Duling United Methodist Church, Keyser.
Surviving are two sons, Robert T. Staggs and wife Glenda, and Alan W. Staggs and wife Kim, all of Keyser; one daughter, Sandra E. Matlick and husband Med, Keyser; one brother, W. Odell Hines, New Creek; two sisters, Violet Staggs, Keyser, and Beatrice Early, Roanoke, Va.; eight grandchildren, Sherry (Staggs) Mattox, Watkinsville, Ga., Christopher Matlick, Bridgewater, Va., Greg Staggs, Keyser, Jill (Matlick) Ginevan, Riglione, Italy, Darin Matlick, Jeremy Staggs, Justin Staggs and Amanda Staggs, all of Keyser; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Monday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Thomas Anderson officiating.
Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
ROBERT M. STANGLE
RIDGELEY, W.Va. - Robert Michael Stangle, 69, of Ridgeley, died Friday, June 6, 1997, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Oct. 14, 1927, in Ridgeley, he was the son of the late Peter Paul and Mary Rose (Keller) Stangle.
Mr. Stangle served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from the Celanese Corporation, where he had been a traffic clerk.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Knobley Mountain Post No. 136, American Legion, and the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge No. 271.
In addition, Mr. Stangle also was a musician who played the trumpet in the Navy Band, as well as various bands in the Cumberland area.
Surviving are his wife, Evalee (Elkins) Stangle; one son, Robert Stangle Jr., Valley Road, Cumberland; two daughters, Kelley Jenkins, Warrenton, Va., and Carlee DeWitt, Allentown, Pa.; three grandchildren, Cody and Dillon Jenkins, and Jesse DeWitt; and one brother, Carl T. Stangle, Lakeland, Fla.
Friends will be received at the George-Upchurch Funeral Home, 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Frank Brauer as celebrant.
Military honors will be accorded by the combined veterans honor guard.
Serving as pallbearers will be Steve Jenkins, Michael DeWitt, Robert Stangle Jr., Glen Sisk, Ray Jenkins, and Ike Kenney.

WINNA P. STARCHER
BUCKHANNON, W.Va. - Winna Phillips Starcher, 91, of Buckhannon, formerly of Cumberland, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 1997, at her home.
Her husband, L. Brooks Starcher, died July 25, 1964, and is buried in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Cumberland. Both were former residents of Cumberland.
Her mother, Ida Young Phillips, and her father, Sidney F. Phillips, are buried in the French Creek, W.Va., cemetery. She also was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters. Mrs. Starcher was the last surviving member of her family.
She is survived by two sons, Robert Young Starcher, Baltimore, and Ronald Brooks Starcher of Hot Springs, Ark.; a daughter, Kay Starcher Klausewitz, Swampscott, Mass.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Winna graduated from Buckhannon Upshur High School in Buckhannon. After attending West Virginia Wesleyan College, she taught school. While raising her three children in Cumberland, she was a full-time homemaker and an active volunteer in schools and churches.
She was appointed to the Allegany County Board of Education. She was a member of the Centre Street United Methodist Church where she served on the Official Board, conducted Bible School for several summers, and was secretary of the Women's Society of Christian Service.
Following the death of her husband, Winna was employed at Hood College in Frederick as a house mother for seven years. In 1974 she moved back to Buckhannon.
At Mrs. Starcher's request, her body was cremated. Memorial services will be held at First United Methodist Church, Buckhannon, on Sat., Sept. 20, 1997, at 9 a.m.
At a later date, she will be interred with her husband.
Poling St. Clair Funeral Home, Buckhannon, is in charge of arrangements.
WILDA R. STICKLEY
BARNESVILLE, Ohio - Wilda R. Stickley, 83, formerly of Keyser, W.Va., died Monday, Oct. 13, 1997, at the Barnesville Health Care Center, Barnesville, Ohio.
Born Oct. 5, 1914, at Purgitsville, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Edward G. and Cora F. (Rinker) Ruckman. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Vance H. Stickley on Nov. 19, 1989.
Mrs. Stickley was a member of the Keyser Presbyterian Church, Keyser.
Surviving are two sons, Jennings R. Stickley and wife, Joan, and Ronald E. Stickley, all of Keyser; two daughters, Carolyn Hayden and husband Bill, Bethesda, Ohio, and Joyce Stohlman and husband, John, Mechanicsville; one brother, Cecil Ruckman, Miami, Fla.; one sister, Mary Puerner, Escondido, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
