HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Joseph Larry "Shoes" Penwell, 58, of Harpers Ferry, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, in Inova Fairfax Hospital.
Born April 11, 1941, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Henry and Jessie Elizabeth Dailey Penwell.
He was a maintenance supervisor for Loudoun Memorial Hospital.
He was of the Methodist faith.
He is survived by two daughters, Becky Lashbrook of Harpers Ferry and Kathy Hardy of Charles Town, W.Va.; three sons, Larry Penwell of Harpers Ferry, Joseph Penwell of Lynchburg, Va., and Ricky Penwell of Mt. Olive, W.Va.; two sisters, Judy Barnette of Leesburg, Va., and Janie Souers of Ranson, W.Va.; a brother, Robert Penwell of Harpers Ferry; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Hazel Hardy, Madeline Hardy, Velma Farmer and LouDel Waldron; five brothers, Harold Penwell, Thomas Penwell, Ronald Penwell, Elmer Penwell and Nelson Penwell; and two grandchildren.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home in Ranson. The Rev. Bruce Singhas will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens in Martinsburg, W.Va.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Sarah E. Thomas
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Sarah E. Thomas, 85, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, April 9, 2000, at Integrated Health Services of West Virginia in Charles Town, W.Va.
Born Feb. 16, 1915, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late Charles Harrison and Olive Ray Roth Thomas.
She is survived by great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Charles William Thomas; and one sister, Marie Becker.
Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. The Rev. Thomas L. Tennis Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home today, and the family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday one hour prior to the service.
Shawna M. Domer
HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Shawna Marie Domer, infant daughter of Jason L. Domer and Renee Wilk of Hedgesville, died Monday, April 10, 2000, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by one sister, Brooke Domer, at home; two brothers, Hunter Domer and Brent Domer, both at home; maternal grandparents, Kim Tarner of Orlando, Fla., and Earl Wilk of Hagerstown; paternal grandparents, Betty Domer and David Domer, of Martinsburg; great-grandmother, Glenda Haden of Hagerstown; great-grandfather, George Klipp of Glen Burnie, Md.
Graveside services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Pleasant View Memory Gardens. The Rev. Ed Taylor will officiate.
Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg.
Boyd K. Cottrell
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Boyd K. Cottrell, 77, of Martinsburg, died Monday, April 10, 2000, at his home.
Born July 16, 1922, in Lost Creek, W.Va., he was the son of the late Abraham and Della Mace Cottrell.
He retired in 1978 from the 167th Tactical Airlift Wing, West Virginia Air National Guard as chief master sergeant in base supply.
He attended Trinity United Methodist Church.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Italy. He received a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. He was a veteran of the Korean War.
He was a member of Equality Lodge 44 A.F. & A.M.; Martinsburg Lodge of Perfection; Wheeling Consistory; Lebanon Chapter 2 R.A.M.; Martinsburg Lodge 778 B.P.O.E.; and Palestine Commandery 2 Knights Templar. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite of Free Masonry; 14th Degree Scottish Rite of Free Masonry; a member of Osiris Temple Mystic Order of Shrine; Eastern Panhandle Shrine Club; and Legion of Honor and Shenandoah Forest 150 Tall Cedars of Lebanon.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Stickel Cottrell; a daughter, Dr. Carolyn P. Cottrell of Bedford, N.H.; three sons, Kenneth B. Cottrell of Baker, Fla., Richard F. Cottrell of Charles Town, W.Va., and William K. Cottrell of Port Saint John, Fla.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, James R. Cottrell; a sister; and five brothers.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St. in Martinsburg. Dr. G. Edward Grove will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

Joseph Spence
ELM GROVE, W.Va. - Joseph Spence, 54, of Elm Grove, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at his home.
Born Aug. 28, 1945, in St. Marys, W.Va., he was the son of the late James and Helen Wilson Spence.
He was a graduate of St. Marys High School and West Liberty State College. He received his master's degree in education from West Virginia University.
He taught health and physical education and coached in Ohio County schools for 32 years. He was head football coach at Triadelphia High School until 1976. He was the offensive coordinator for the Wheeling Park Patriots football team until his retirement from coaching in 1993.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He was a member of St. Marys Masonic Lodge; St. Marys Elks Club; Ohio County Education Association; West Virginia Education Association; and National Education Association. He was a member and past president of Chi Nu Fraternity at West Liberty State College; and a member of the Football Alumni Association at West Liberty State College. He volunteered for the American Cancer Society.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane "Janie" Fry Spence; two daughters, Natalie Lynn Spence of Wheeling, W.Va., and Michelle Lynn Hawley of Triadelphia, W.Va.; a brother, Jeff Spence of Fort Mitchell, Ky.; and a grandson.
Services and visitation were held at Kepner Funeral Home, 166 Kruger St. in Elm Grove. The Rev. Donald Fry officiated.

Allie V. Wright Bailey
CARY, N.C. - Allie V. Wright Bailey, 89, of Carolina House of Cary, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Sunday, April 9, 2000, at Western Wake Hospital in Cary.
Born Oct. 8, 1910, in Harrison County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Albert J. and Mirta A. Witt Wright.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Obed M. Bailey, in 1981.
She and her husband operated a dairy farm in Thurmont, Md., and a grocery store in Middletown, Md.
She was a member of Maranatha Brethren Church of Hagerstown.
She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Bailey Ridenour of Raleigh, N.C.; a grandson, Jeffrey P. Ridenour of Miami; nieces and nephews.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North in Hagerstown. The Rev. Jay Fritz will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven cemetery in Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends Saturday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
