Fred G. Butler Sr.

INWOOD, W.Va. - Fred Gold Butler Sr., 71, of Inwood, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Jan. 28, 1929, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of Anna Sophronia Balenger Butler and the late Fred Herbert Butler.

He was a dairy farmer, owning 325 acres and renting an additional 900 acres, milking 160 Holsteins. He also owned and was president of Wright Motors Inc., an automobile dealership of Martinsburg, for 35 years.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Arden United Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday School superintendent, lay leader and delegate to the annual conference. He was presently serving as chairman of Pastor-Parish Relations Committee.

He was a member of Farm Bureau; served as county president, state director, state vice president and president of the West Virginia Farm Bureau Board of Directors; and served on the American Farm Bureau Federation Executive Committee.

He served as president of Maryland Cooperative Milk Products when it merged with Dairymen Inc. of Louisville, Ky., as a member of Dairymen Inc. he was elected to serve as president of the Middle Atlantic Division until it merged into Mid America Dairymen. He was elected chairman of the Coastal Division of Mid-America and served on the corporate board in Springfield, Mo. He was serving as a director of Northeast Council of Dairy Farmers of America of Kansas City, Mo.

He served as secretary-treasurer of the National Milk Producers Federation, and had been a member of the Executive Committee.

He was West Virginia's Outstanding Young Farmer in 1963 sponsored by the Jaycees. He was recognized by the West Virginia Future Farmers of America as Outstanding Agri-Business Farmer in 1976.

He was a member and former vice president of the Board of Directors of Farm Family Insurance Company of Albany, N.Y.

He was a former director of the West Virginia State Chamber of Commerce.

He served as chairman of West Virginia Selective Service District Board, a former member of the board of directors and a past president of Martinsburg-Berkeley County Chamber of Commerce, past president of West Virginia Future Farmers of America, from which he received The American Farmer Degree in 1948.

He received the 4-H All Star Pin in 1948 and the 4-H Alumni Award in 1988.

He was a member of 32nd Degree Mason of Triluminar Lodge 117.

He was past president of Inwood-Bunker Hill Lions Club, he was presently serving as treasurer; he was past district governor of Lions Clubs International District 29-1; and he received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award in 1981 from Lions Clubs International.

He received the Pennsylvania Master Farmer Award in 1988.

He served as a director and vice president of Valley Farm Credit Board and served as vice chairman of the advisory committee of Baltimore Farm Credit Bank; served as chairman of the visiting committee of Shepherd College Foundation, appointed by college president Dr. Michael Riccards in 1992; and received the first Honorary Doctorate Degree of Humane Letters from Shepherd College in 1990.

He was appointed by Gov. Gaston Caperton to serve as a member of the West Virginia Reappraisal Board.

He served as a member of the West Virginia University College of Agriculture and Forestry visiting committee, served as a member of the advisory committee of the Berkeley County Planning Commission and served as chairman of the board of directors of Southern States Cooperative Martinsburg Petroleum Service.

He was appointed by the secretary of agriculture, Richard Lyng, to serve on the National Dairy Commission on dairy policy.

He served on the board of directors of Peoples National Bank of Martinsburg.

He was appointed to and served as a member of Berkeley County Board of Zoning Appeals; appointed by Dr. Neil Bucklew, president of West Virginia University to serve on the visiting committee of West Virginia University Extension Service; and served as a member of the West Virginia State Fair Advisory Committee.

He received the State Silver Good Citizenship Award in 1991 from the West Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.

He was enshrined in July 1994 into the West Virginia Agriculture and Forestry Hall of Fame.

He was honored in August 1995 by the West Virginia 4-H Club Foundation, along with his wife, and received the West Virginia Friends of 4-H Award.

He received the Honorary American Farmer Degree in 1995, presented by the National Future Farmers of America Association at the National Convention in Kansas City, Mo.

He was listed in the 1996-1997 National Directory as an honored professional of Who's Who in Executives and Professionals.

He was a member of the West Virginia University Agriculture, Forestry and Family Resources Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Norma Gene Lineberg Butler; a daughter, Judy Rae Bechtold of Martinsburg; a son, Fred Gold Butler Jr. of Inwood; a sister, Anna M. Crowell of Martinsburg; a brother, James William Butler of Inwood; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Tommy Ray Butler.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Arden United Methodist Church. The Rev. Walter F. Bowers will officiate. Burial will be in Arden United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends today and Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St. in Martinsburg. Visitation also will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the church.

Michael S. Bartlett

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Michael Scott Bartlett, 32, of 112 Fenway Drive, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, as the result of an automobile accident near Charles Town.

Born Jan. 31, 1968, in Ranson, W.Va., he was the son of Mervin M. and Mary Louise Jones Bartlett.

He was a sales manager with Dan Ryan Builders, Mt. Airy, Md.

He was a member of Faith Baptist Church, Petersville, Md.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Tracy Ellen Bartlett; two daughters, Chelsey Erin Bartlett and Savannah Rae Bartlett, both at home; two sisters, Michelle D. Smith of Jefferson, Md., and Leslie D. Bartlett of Frederick, Md.; maternal grandmother, Minno V. Jones of Bolivar, W.Va.; a cousin; two nieces and four nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Faith Baptist Church, Petersville. The Rev. Edward A. Jordan and Bill Turney will officiate. Burial will be in Brownsville Heights cemetery, Brownsville Heights, Md.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Brunswick, Md.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to his daughters Chelsey and Savannah, c/o Ronald L. Bauer, 811 North Maple Avenue, Brunswick, MD 21716.

Eliza T. McIntire

FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Eliza Theresa McIntire, 86, of Falling Waters, died Sunday, April 9, 2000, at City Hospital.

Born July 29, 1913, in Martinsburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Eliza Gorell Zepp LeMaster.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall D. McIntire.

She retired from Washington County Hospital as an LPN.

She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church for 50 years.

She is survived by a son, Marshall D. McIntire Jr. of Easton Rapids, Mich.; five grandsons, David McIntire of Portland, Ore., Ronald McIntire of San Diego, Douglas McIntyre of Falling Waters; Fred McIntyre of Clarksburg, W.Va., and Paul McIntyre of Hedgesville, W.Va.; a granddaughter, Andrea McIntire of Prattsville, Ala.; two great-grandsons; six great-granddaughters; one great-great-grandson; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a son, Douglas McIntyre.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Rosedale cemetery. The Rev. Charles J. Griffin will officiate.

Margaret E. Hoak

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Margaret Elizabeth B. Hoak, 94, of Charles Town, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

Born Dec. 26, 1905, in Halltown, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William H. and Ella Mae Pope Bowers.

Her husband, William C. Hoak Sr., died June 4, 1977.

She attended Harpers Ferry High School, Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Halltown Presbyterian Church, Halltown, where she taught Sunday School in the children's department for 50 years. She was a former elder and historian of the church.

She was a member of AARP.

She is survived by a daughter, Betty J. Simons of Charles Town; two step-daughters, Mary Lancaster of Charles Town and Catherine Selepack of Pennsylvania; two grandsons; a great-grandson; step-grandchildren; step-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a stepson, William Hoak Jr.; two sisters, Dorothy Mae Bowers and Mary Ruth Bowers; four brothers, Clyde W. Bowers, Winerd Bowers, Ralph Bowers and Austin Bowers.

She was the last of her immediate family.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Halltown Presbyterian Church, Halltown. Lay Minister Alvin Russell will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery, Charles Town.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home.
