MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Lester L.F. "Ben" Cook, 82, of Martinsburg, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Born June 25, 1917, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Edgar W. and Ella May Lewis Cook.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret L. Nuckles Cook.
He retired after 35 years as owner/operator of an electronics shop.
A veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, he served in World War II.
He was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church and Men's Class.
He was a volunteer for the No. 1 Fire Co. in Martinsburg.
He is survived by four children that he raised, Sharon L. Oden of Gerrardstown, W.Va., Lisa D. Schoppert of Martinsburg, Raymond L. Buck of Bunker Hill, W.Va., and Brian D. Schoppert of Lancaster, Pa.; a sister, Eva McCauley of Halfway; two brothers, Russell W. Cook and LeGarde Cook, both of Martinsburg; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lottie Bell Butcher and Regina J. Moore.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. William E. Merki will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery, with military services by Newton D. Baker Post 896 V.F.W. and Berkeley Post 14 American Legion.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
James E. Breeden
BUNKER HILL, W.Va. - James E. Breeden, 49, of Bunker Hill, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at his home.
Born July 12, 1950, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of Thelma Jacobs Breeden of Martinsburg, W.Va., and the late Robert L. Breeden.
He was a driver for Elite Taxi Service.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was a member of Newton D. Baker Post 896, V.F.W.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Linda Rogers Breeden; a stepdaughter, Karen Barney of Martinsburg; two stepsons, Shawn Pulse of Martinsburg and Robert Tenney of Florida; four sisters, Judy Lehigh, Vickie Lynn Walls, Connie May Patterson and Bonnie Lou Breeden, all of Berkeley County; six brothers, Robert Breeden, Roger Breeden, Ronnie Breeden, Max Breeden, Michael Breeden and Billy Breeden, all of Berkeley County; and three grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Revs. John H. Shepherd and Jim G. Shepherd will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery, with military services by Newton D. Baker Post 896 V.F.F. and Berkeley Post 14 American Legion.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mary H. Lewis
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Mary Hilda Thompson Lewis, 89, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at City Hospital.
Born June 29, 1910, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late Edward Lee and Maude Ethel Foreman Thompson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Francis Lewis.
She attended Martinsburg Business College.
She was employed with Infantry Journal in Washington, D.C.; and by Buckingham Super Markets of Washington, D.C., retiring in 1972.
She was a Protestant.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Newton D. Baker Post 896 V.F.W. and Berkeley Post 14 American Legion.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Estella Louise Thompson Fowler.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. James D. Riley Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Fort Lincoln cemetery, Brentwood, Md.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
Tommie H. Ward
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Tommie Howard Ward, 72, of Charles Town, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va.
Born June 29, 1927, in Elkins, W.Va., he was the son of the late Russell and Ruth Chenoweth Ward.
He was a graduate of Elkins High School, and West Virginia State Police Academy in Charleston, W.Va.
He was a West Virginia State Police trooper from 1957 to 1968.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. His medals included the Korean Service Medal.
He was a Protestant
He was a member of the Civil Service Commission for Jefferson County's Sheriff's Department in Charles Town, W.Va., and Towne House Restaurant Coffee Club in Charles Town.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Edith M. Scherrer Ward; two daughters, Ellen Ann Johnston of Winchester, Va., and Susanne W. Brown of Charles Town, W.Va.; three sisters, Thelma Wilt and Mary R. Gallagher, both of Washington, Kathleen Gauley of Roanoke, Va.; two brothers, Russell Ward of Elkins, and Edward Ward of Washington; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Neill Ward.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town. The Rev. Brian Owens will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery in Charles Town.
Friends will be received at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Patricia H. Lawson
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Patricia H. Lawson, 65, of Berkeley Springs, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs.
Born May 22, 1934, in California, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William Clair and Agnes Juanita Sloan Askins.
She was president of Sleepy Creek Manufacturing in Berkeley Springs.
She was a member of Berkeley Springs Woman's Club; and was on the board of directors of Potomac Center, Romney, W.Va., and several states Trappers Associations.
She is survived by her husband, Donald W. Lawson; two daughters, Nancy Jo Lawson of Urbana, Md., and Leslei Ann Lawson of Manns Choice, Pa.; three sisters, Edwina Thompson of Manns Choice, Mary Jane Rice of Middletown, Md., and Agnes Atkins of Leola, Pa.; six brothers, Pete Askins of Lititz, Pa., James Askins of Wells Tannery, Pa., Ray Askins of Shellsburg, Pa., Don Askins of Boonsboro, Md., Arthur Askins of Silver Spring, Md., and Bartley Askins of Annapolis; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
