Joseph W. Hollida

KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. - Joseph Wayne Hollida, 63, of Fox Glen, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va.

Born Aug. 18, 1936, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of Virginia S. Strider Hollida of Martinsburg and the late Irvin Hollida.

He was a 1954 graduate of Martinsburg High School.

He had been employed in the Maintenance Department of Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, W.Va.; and had been a self-employed farmer.

He was a staff sergeant in the 167 Support Squadron of the West Virginia Air National Guard in Martinsburg.

He was of the Methodist faith.

He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 948, Charles Town, W.Va.; and Elks Lodge No. 778, Martinsburg.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 12 years, Evelyn Delores Bible Hollida; a daughter, Leotta Shillingbury of Martinsburg; two sons, Robert Hollida of Martinsburg and John Hollida of Alexandria, Va.; four stepchildren, Ronda Drummond of Ranson, W.Va., Delores Whitmore of Inwood, W.Va., Tod Parrish of Martinsburg and Chris Parrish of Gerrardstown, W.Va.; two sisters, Ann Whittington and Marylou Russler, both of Martinsburg; six grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tracie McInnes; and a brother, Reynolds Hollida.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town. The Rev. James Chambly will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery in Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Gilbert J. Wood

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Gilbert James "Woody" Wood, 77, of Berkeley Springs, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at his home.

Born Aug. 10, 1922, in Kerrmoor, Pa., he was the son of the late Clark Edward and Sarah Young Wood.

He graduated from Clearfield High School and was trained as an electrician at a trade school in Lewistown, Pa.

He retired as an electrical supervisor in 1991 from U.S. Silica in Berkeley Springs.

He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.

He was a member of Berkeley Baptist Church; and New Hope Baptist Chapel, both of Berkeley Springs.

He was a Boy Scout leader in Lewistown.

He was a member of American Legion in Charleston, W.Va.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Freeda G. Barrett Wood; two daughters, Susan J. Fitzmaurice of Madison, Tenn., and Barbara A. Hands of Brunswick, Maine; two sons, Kenneth D. Wood of West Columbia, S.C., and Ronald T. Wood of Berkeley Springs; a sister, June Barrett of Slate Hill, N.Y.; three brothers, Woodrow Wood of Middlefield, Ohio, Edward Wood of Grampian, Pa., and Gordon Wood of Corwensville, Pa.; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert J. Wood; two sisters, Mae Freyer and Mildred Rich; and three brothers, Cleo Wood, Ward Wood and Oklay Wood.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Berkeley Baptist Church, Winchester Grade Road, Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Kenneth Klingler will officiate.

Burial will be Friday at 1 p.m. in William Lind Memorial cemetery in Lewistown.

The family will receive friends today from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St. in Berkeley Springs. The funeral home will be open today from 3 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to New Hope Baptist Chapel, 315 Independence St., Berkeley Springs, WV 25411; or Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, WV 25401.

Henry C. Barnhart

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Henry Carl Barnhart, 50, of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and formerly of 651 Lincoln Way West, McConnellsburg, Pa., died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at the medical center.

Born Oct. 11, 1949, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Henry Critzman Barnhart and the late Constance Louise Bowers Leasure.

He worked in construction in New Jersey and Florida.

He was a 1968 graduate of South Hagerstown High School.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.

He was a Protestant.

He is survived by three sons, Steven M. Barnhart of Fort Stewart, Ga., and Henry C. Barnhart Jr. and James E. Barnhart, both of Reno, Nev.; a brother, Ronald C. Barnhart of McConnellsburg; his stepmother, Patsy A. Barnhart of Hagerstown; a half sister, Cheryl A. Shifflett of Hagerstown; three half brothers, Andrew W. Barnhart of Fayetteville, Pa., and Benjamin G. Barnhart and Joseph A. Barnhart, both of Hagerstown; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant half sister, Sharon Lynn Barnhart.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Macedonia United Brethren Church, 11887 Worleytown Road, Greencastle, Pa. The Rev. Gayle L. Ruble will officiate. Burial will be in Macedonia Church cemetery, Greencastle, with military services by members Charles M. Nitterhouse Post No. 1599 and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Honor Guard of Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St. in Greencastle; and Friday at noon at the church.

Pauline M. Grandstaff

CHESHIRE, Conn. - Pauline M. "Granny" Bowers Grandstaff, 90, of Cheshire, and formerly of Charles Town, W.Va., died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at Cheshire Convalescent Center.

Born May 2, 1909, in Martinsburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John and Agnes Roberts Bowers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Clyde Grandstaff, in 1981.

She retired in 1976 as a registered nurse from Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va.

She was a communicant at St. James Catholic Church in Charles Town.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Lois Garrity of Cheshire; and four grandchildren, Winnie Garrity of Richmond, Va., Nancy Garrity and Christopher Garrity, both of Chicago, and Patrick Joseph Garrity of Wallingford, Conn.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Charles Town. The Rev. Brian Owens will be celebrant. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery in Charles Town.

There will be no visitation.

Memorial donations may be made to St. James Catholic Church, 311 S. George St., Charles Town, WV 25414.

Arrangements are by Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town.

Mida V. Gellner

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Mida V. Miller Gellner, 86, of Martinsburg, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at City Hospital in Martinsburg.

Born Feb. 7, 1913, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Enoch and Mida Drake Miller.

She was preceded in death by first husband, Foster D. Boward; and by her second husband, Arthur F. Gellner.

She was a graduate of Williamsport High School; and Columbia College of Hagerstown.

She was formerly employed by Brody's in Martinsburg.

She was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church, Shining Light Class and United Methodist Women. She had been a Sunday School teacher, a member of the church choir and a counselor of Harmony United Methodist Youth.

She is survived by two sisters, Katherine Bowers of Martinsburg and Jeanetta Samsell of Menno Village in Chambersburg; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Harvey Miller.

Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St. in Martinsburg. Dr. Ray Roberson and the Rev. Randall S. Reid will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Harmony United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1510, Falling Waters, WV 25419.
