David E. Mudge

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - David E. Mudge Ph.D., 84, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at his home.

Born Sept. 27, 1915, in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late George Edward and Lottie Entler Mudge.

He was a 1933 graduate of Martinsburg High School. He received both his bachelor of science degree in chemistry and physics in 1937, and a master of arts degree in chemistry in 1938 from West Virginia University. He was awarded a Doctorate of Education from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., in 1944.

He was an educator for the Berkeley County School System. He began his professional career as a chemistry and physics teacher at Martinsburg High School in 1938; remaining in the same location as principal from 1948 to 1958. He spent summer sessions as a faculty member of institutions of higher learning including West Virginia University, Marshall University, Southeastern University and Shepherd College. Serving as acting county school superintendent from 1958 to 1959, he was appointed assistant county superintendent from 1959 to 1972 and associate superintendent from 1972 to 1978.

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church; former vestryman; and church school teacher.

He was listed in Who's Who in American Education; was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and Kappa Delta Pi, both education fraternities; Delta Phi Alpha, a German fraternity; and Phi Kappa Alpha, a social fraternity.

He was a member of Berkeley County Education Association; West Virginia Education Association and National Education Association; and had served as president of Berkeley County Education Association.

He was a former member of Martinsburg Kiwanis Club; a former member of the local Chamber of Commerce; did post-doctoral work at Western Maryland College; and a former member of North Central Committee for the State of West Virginia.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet Leach Mudge; a son, Robert E. Mudge of Martinsburg; and a granddaughter, Samantha Renee Mudge.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Entler Mudge.

Service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Jack T. Sutor Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Walter L. Butler

INWOOD, W.Va. - Walter Lee Butler, 61, of Route 1, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at Winchester Medical Center.

Born March 4, 1938, in Arden, W.Va., he was the son of the late Boyd H. and Gertrude Ellis Butler.

He was a 1956 graduate of Musselman High School and attended Shepherd College.

He was a longtime Berkeley County farmer, with his sons, at Valley View Farms, and was associated with the family business, Valley Seeding.

He was a lifelong member of Arden United Methodist Church.

He was president of Tri-County Farm Services in Berryville, Va., and was on the board of directors of One Valley Bank.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Dotty Compher Butler; one daughter, Jennifer Butler of Winchester, Va.; three sons, Mark Butler, Craig Butler and Bradley Butler, all of Inwood; three sisters, Margaret Blackledge of Falls Church, Va., Mildred Hammond of Kearneysville, W.Va., and Phyllis Kneisly of Martinsburg, W.Va.; five grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, C. Curtis Butler.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Arden United Methodist Church. The Rev. Walter F. Bowers will officiate. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Arden United Methodist Church, Route 1, Box 217AA, Martinsburg, WV 25401, or to the charity of one's choice.

William F. Quesenberry

INWOOD, W.Va. - William F. Quesenberry, 70, of Route 2, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born April 12, 1929, in Baltimore County, Md., he was the son of the late Fountain W. and Cornelia Hilton Quesenberry.

He was a retired truck driver for Matlack Tankard Division.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War.

He was a member of Heritage Free Will Baptist Church in Inwood.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille Bledsoe Quesenberry; two daughters, Linda Boyce of Owings Mills, Md., and April Boyer-Baker of Frederick, Md.; two sons, Larry E. Quesenberry of Mount Airy, Md., and Jerry W. Quesenberry of Myersville, Md.; two sisters, Mary Howard of Sykesville, Md., and Betty Pickett of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Lowell Quesenberry of Marriottsville, Md., and Robert Quesenberry of Ellicott City, Md.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Wanda Care; and two brothers, Daniel Quesenberry and Donald Quesenberry.

Services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Heritage Free Will Baptist Church, Route 51 East, Inwood. The Rev. Tom Blake will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park cemetery in Thurmont, Md.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, 114 N. Mildred St. in Ranson, W.Va.

Ardella I. Marple

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Ardella Irene Marple, 80, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, at her home.

Born Sept. 3, 1919, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lee A. and Sarah B. Emery Fuss.

She was a homemaker and had been employed at Star Confectionery, Martinsburg, as a waitress for many years.

She was a longtime member of Christ Reformed Church and Dillon Sunday School Class of the church.

She was a member and past president of Ladies Auxiliary of Palestine Commandery 2, Knights Templar of West Virginia, a member of Golden Rule Chapter 69, Order of the Eastern Star and a charter member of Martinsburg Lioness Club.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Edward J. Marple Sr.; four daughters, Patricia Sheely, Donna Sperow and Brenda Blackford, all of Martinsburg and Sandra Armentrout of Lakeland, Fla.; one son, Edward J. Marple Jr. of Martinsburg; two brothers, Richard Fuss of Mount Laurel, N.J., and Walter Fuss of Martinsburg; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Emily Coulter, Frances Shade and Margaret Billmyer and two brothers, Donald E. Fuss and Lee E. Fuss.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. Thomas E. Hartshorn will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Christ Reformed Church, 117-123 E. Burke St., Martinsburg, WV 25401.

Francis K. Sloat

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Francis Kiracofe Sloat, 79, of Shepherdstown, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

Born Jan. 9, 1920, in Shenandoah Junction, W.Va., he was the son of the late William B. and Lucie Darr Sloat.

He was a 1938 graduate of Charles Town High School and he attended Shepherd College.

He was employed at Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore, as a finance officer for many years.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II as a warrant officer and participated in the invasion of Normandy.

He was a member of Williams Memorial United Methodist Church, Shenandoah Junction.

He was a member of Shepherdstown West Virginia Historic Commission and Friends of the Library, Shepherdstown.

He is survived by one sister, Audrey Sloat Egle of Shepherdstown; and one brother, Hollis W. Sloat of Martinsburg, W.Va.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Esther Florine Custer and Eleanor Lou Grant and one brother, Osbourne William Sloat.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. The Rev. Stanley Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
